First, they take an interest inventory (on OKCIS) and then pick out the three jobs they are most interested in. They have to do some research on the jobs, find out educational requirements, salary, etc. They pick one of the three to job shadow. Our Alternative Ed director finds businesses in town that have those jobs or something close to it. They have done this for several years, so she has contacts with most of the businesses in town. The student then writes a letter to the person at the business they wish to shadow, along with the letter they enclose a form that the business must sign and send back. The student also signs an agreement form, basically saying they will follow school rules and that they will behave appropriately on the job site. Parents sign as well if the student is under 18. All students job shadow on the same day, and it's only 2 hours (9-11). This is partly because our Alternative Academy is on a shortened school day. To my knowledge, this has always worked well and we have not had any issues with our students. A couple of students have even had job offers through this program. Tracy Fenton :) Hilldale MS School Counselor Muskogee, OK "Job Shadowing" PARENTAL PERMISSION Form Dear Parents or Guardian, Hilldale Middle School is proud of our students who have participated in our Career Exploration programs. This year eligible students will have the opportunity to perform a "job shadow" of a person in our community. The job shadow student will be released from school for the entire day on Wednesday, February 2, 2010 in order to perform this activity. The person being shadowed should be able to have the student follow him/her for the entire day (8:00-3:00). During this time the student will gain knowledge of the job and have a good understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the person being shadowed. The student will have a questionnaire to complete and will have to prepare a written report to be presented to Ms. Fenton/Ms. Dover and to their English class on their return. The parents/guardians should be aware that they are responsible for the student's transportation to the job shadow, and will accept full responsibility for their safety. Students should not "shadow" dangerous occupations that may be harmful or place them in hazardous areas. Students should refrain from shadowing occupations in the "fast food" areas or occupations located within the home. We hope the students will gain knowledge and be able to view the roles and responsibilities associated with various occupations. If you have any questions regarding this program, please contact Tracy Fenton at 918-683-0763. Last year was my first year here, however according to my principal the exemption policy has helped tremendously with attendance. Something else we implemented last year is that all school fees must be paid as well to be exempt. Both implementations have helped. My thoughts as to if this helps... Honestly, the students who care about grades and attendance or not having to take a test are going to be here and do what it takes to be exempt. The students who do not have the best grades usually do not have great attendance either. I wish we had something for these students that they would be willing to work towards. I feel like the exemption policy is honestly for a handful of students not necessarily the whole student population. I hope this helps. I have copied and attached our exemption policy to this email. Please let me know if you have any questions. I really don't think kids think about this until the week before finals. I doubt that the policy has any real effect on attendance Ed Poley epoley at tyrone.k12.ok.us At Owasso High we require semester exams which count at 15% of the total semester grade. Becky Copeland Counselor, H-O Owasso High School Direct Line: 918-272-8030 FAX: 918-272-8028 becky.copeland at owasso.k12.ok.us We had the policy of exemption of one or two based on attendance and grades but not all (since in college they HAVE to take finals). We did away with the policy more than 3 years ago--too many complaints about how "unfair" it was from our parents (and some had valid points). In KC, I was a counselor at a high school that also tried this. It was based again on attendance (you could only miss one day and must have a B or better in the class you chose to be exempt). There are variations and seemed to always be complaints for exceptions. I do think it was a great attendance incentive for many and for others, due to their grades not making the cutoff--it still didn't matter. Unless the school is strict on their stance when students miss a semester test, even the exemption policy isn't an incentive. Alicia Brierton We do 3 absences and A's, 2 absences and B's, and 1 absence and C. It has helped our attendance TREMENDOUSLY!!! The kids will do anything not to miss school so they can be exempt. Ground Hog Day is always National Job Shadowing Day. They have awesome forms , ideas, etc. I made my students do all the work. It was for a grade in an Honors class I taught. They had to contact the person they wanted to shadow--it was more important if they made the contact. A lot of kids will just chose to shadow a parent, which is fine if they can prove to you they are really interested in that career/job. They have to work the same hours the person works. These are things I learned from experience. Some just go and play videos. They have to have the person sign a form saying they understand what the student is expected to do. It takes a lot of work, but the kids gain so much from it. Good Luck!! It is an elective course and about half of the class takes it. The shadowing is the final activity of the course. I hope to expand the shadowing opportunity to all seniors on Ground Hog Day. You can record your own message or you can type it and an automated voice will deliver the message. I'm also pretty aggressive about getting email addresses from my parents so I communicate that way too. Finally, don't forget about social media. You'd be surprised how many parents communicate through Facebook and Twitter. We take the "by any means necessary" approach (lol).
