Does anyone have a copy of the list from SB 290? I would love to see the state departments old list while we are revisiting our concurrent policy this year. I am a first year counselor and would like to have it to at least refer to.

If you speak with the SDE about the 2009 SB 290 it no longer applies. We spoke with Melissa White earlier this year and were instructed it was local district's determination. Although we refer to this list of courses and honor these it seems perhaps more can be approved locally. In fact if you attempt to locate this list on line...it is not found.

Guymon High, in accordance with ACE legislation and SB 290 session 2009, shall govern the concurrent enrollment, dual credit, and EOI testing of any Guymon High School student who wishes to participate in college classes during his or her junior and/or senior year....
This is the beginning of the policy Guymon has on dual credit that had to be implemented by state law. Here is another section taken from the policy and law:
The following higher education courses commonly taken through
concurrent enrollment have been reviewed by the Oklahoma State
Department of Education (OSDE) and approved for academic credit:
College Algebra = 1 unit Algebra II
General Biology = 1 unit Biology II
General Botany = 1 unit Botany
Eng Comp I = 1/2 unit Eng IV
Eng Comp II = 1/2 unit Eng IV
Intro to Chemistry = 1 unit Chemistry
                              Chemistry I = 1 unit Chemistry
Am. Hist early = 1/2 unit US Hist
Am. Hist late = 1/2 unit US Hist
Intro to Geography = 1/2 unit World Geog
Am. Fed. Govt. = 1/2 unit Am. Government
Intro to Speech = 1/2 unit Speech

Courses not listed and for which academic credit is sought may be
submitted to OSDE for review of course curriculum alignment with the
             Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills.

We actually allow classes worth 3 or fewer credits to be valued at 1/2 high school credit and those valued at 4 or greater to have a value of 1 credit at the high school. (This too is stated in the policy.) Our College Algebra usually is counted as part of the required 4th year of math at Guymon High since most students have taken Algebra II by the time they choose concurrent.

The reason this law came into effect was because many schools were doing their own thing with no standard: some schools refused to count concurrent for any high school credit, some schools "over" counted things addressed in the law by using AP exam credit in the junior year English as both English 3 credit for taking the course and English 4 credit for passing the test, and still others were very random in handling concurrent and AP courses. When students transferred from one Oklahoma school to another, they were losing credits they thought they had and were being blocked from graduation in other schools, therefor requiring summer school or attendance the next year... To clean and clear it up, SB 290 session 2009, was written.
