Our school nurse and I wrote a grant a couple of years ago to be able to purchase the curriculum. It is about $600 I think. It's very thorough, and I'm working with middle school students, so we don't present the full curriculum. We do the bulk of the HIV/STD lessons in 7th grade, since infections diseases are covered in the 7th grade science curriculum. We do 5 class periods with 7th graders, 2 class periods with 6th graders for an intro, and 2 class periods with 8th graders as a review. Our science teacher presents the curriculum while the nurse and I are present to help with questions and other issues that may come up. We give each student a blank note card at the beginning of the class period to write questions on that they may be too embarrassed to ask out loud. All students drop their note card in a box at the end of class, even if they have nothing written on it, so that other students can't figure out who asked questions. At the beginning of class the next day, we answer the questions from the anonymous note cards. *Angela Jones* Grove School Counselor 2800 N. However, we are fortunate enough to have a learning resource teacher who has a MS degree in School Psychology. Students with failing grades are pulled from their elective for a small group class with this teacher twice a week during which time work is caught up and/or redone. In addition, she offers continual feedback to the teachers on techniques for them to use to prompt the students for their assignments in order to train the students to self prompt. Beginning in the third grade we require students to maintain a daily assignment notebook which is checked by their English teacher. We use the Remind system for communication of assignments via text message and/or e-mail to both parents and students. PowerSchool generates e-mail notification to parents on missing assignments. I hope this is helpful. I have a contract that I set up on our student information system so it pulls all of the information for me. (I have attached my contract) I call the students in once a week that are failing and talk to them before showing them the contract. I ask them about their grades to see if they are aware of their failing status. I ask them what they think their grade is and then I ask them what they think they are capable of. I show them the contract and their actual grade after they answer those 2 questions. We discuss why they feel they are failing and I make sure to put it back on the student. Lots of times the students have someone to blame! I make them come up with 2 additional things they can do for themselves that will help bring their grade up. Our teachers are required to make parental contact every week for the students that are failing. This way the teacher can tell the parent what is going on and make sure they are aware. The teachers also have to allow the students to come in for Academic Achievement either before school, at lunch, or after school. The teacher decides on all of the details. Academic Achievement is the first step on the student's contract and then they come up with 2 others. I have the student sign the contract and they watch me sign it. I then make a copy and send one home for the parents to sign. I normally don't get the parent signed copy back, but the parent should have been notified by the teacher anyway so I'm not usually concerned about seeing the parent's signature. There are some students that I see on a weekly basis but for the most part, this works. I like being able to make the student feel responsible for the grade and let them know that we (as a school) know they can do better. Our teachers have implemented planners for all of the middle school students. The teacher briefly checks the planner at the end of each hour and require a parent signature on a grade report each week. They give a grade for the planner being complete and having the signature. *Heather Holland* Springer Public Schools School Counselor/Psychometrist On Thu, Jan 22, 2015 at 9:07 AM, OSRHE EPAS PK-12 Counselor Discussion Board wrote: > I also do this at our middle school with the goal of seeing failing > students about every two weeks (sometimes impossible, but that's my goal). > We develop an action plan where we write goals and steps for reaching those > goals (organization, planners, no more zeros, attendance, tutoring, etc). > When I see them again we check their progress with the steps and how far > they've come to reaching their goal (which is usually passing the class). > We tweak the action plan as necessary. AIDS Prevention Education. A. Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) prevention education shall be taught in the public schools of this state. AIDS prevention education shall be limited to the discussion of the disease AIDS and its spread and prevention. Students shall receive such education: 1. at the option of the local school district, a minimum of once during the period from grade five through grade six; 2. a minimum of once during the period from grade seven through grade nine; and 3. a minimum of once during the period from grade ten through grade twelve. B. The State Department of Education shall develop curriculum and materials for AIDS prevention education in conjunction with the State Department of Health. A school district may also develop its own AIDS prevention education curriculum and materials. Any curriculum and materials developed for use in the public schools shall be approved for medical accuracy by the State Department of Health. A school district may use any curriculum and materials which have been developed and approved pursuant to this subsection. C. School districts shall make the curriculum and materials that will be used to teach AIDS prevention education available for inspection by the parents and guardians of the students that will be involved with the curriculum and materials. Furthermore, the curriculum must be limited in time frame to deal only with factual medical information for AIDS prevention. The school districts, at least one (1) month prior to teaching AIDS prevention education in any classroom, shall conduct for the parents and guardians of the students involved during weekend and evening hours at least one presentation concerning the curriculum and materials that will be used for such education. No student shall be required to participate in AIDS prevention education if a parent or guardian of the student objects in writing to such participation. D. AIDS prevention education shall specifically teach students that: 1. engaging in homosexual activity, promiscuous sexual activity, intravenous drug use or contact with contaminated blood products is now known to be primarily responsible for contact with the AIDS virus; 2. avoiding the activities specified in paragraph 1 of this subsection is the only method of preventing the spread of the virus; 3. sexual intercourse, with or without condoms, with any person testing positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibodies, or any other person infected with HIV, places that individual in a high risk category for developing AIDS. E. The program of AIDS prevention education shall teach that abstinence from sexual activity is the only certain means for the prevention of the spread or contraction of the AIDS virus through sexual contact. It shall also teach that artificial means of birth control are not a certain means of preventing the spread of the AIDS virus and reliance on such methods puts a person at risk for exposure to the disease. F. The State Department of Health and the State Department of Education shall update AIDS education curriculum material as newly discovered medical facts make it necessary. (the website is www.sss.org I think) In the state of Oklahoma, all males registering for a driver's permit, license, or even government issued ID are automatically registered for SS when they turn 18. I checked with some of my 18 y/o males and they said they received a letter in the mail that they were registered..... they wondered how it had happened. :) But a reminder..... if they move, they are still required to provide a change of address. They can register online..... honestly, it only takes 1 minute. But, they must provide SS# if they are registering online. Or they can complete the form at any US Post Office. Or they can just not worry about it if they have a valid driver's license. :) A phone number is provided on the website if a guy wants to call and verify that he is registered. Also, 17 y/o can actually register early if their 18th birthday is like within 6 months (I think that time frame is correct).
