I am trying my first one next week. We are going to do it with the 4th and
5th grade classes.  I'm starting to figure out that waiting until high
school is too late for me. I need them interested and see the relevance to
school before they enter middle school.
 
I am asking past students of Wilson Schools to come back and talk about
their careers and how education is important for that career.  We are
setting up 15 minute sessions, 6 morning and 6 afternoon, where the students
will rotate with a 5 minute break in between each.

WE HAD 18 WHEELERS, UPS DRIVERS WITH A TRUCK, HELICOPTERS, I CAN'T REMEMBER

Last year with my 4th graders ( I am at a 3rd & 4th school), I had them do
a career search on what they wanted to be & then they created posters that
covered salary, education, locations of that job, & pictures.  I planned on
doing a wax museum with them dressing up like their career choice &
standing in position and as someone came by & touched their hand they
recited information about their career but that didn't get arranged in
enough time.  I worked with them twice a month for a half an hour.

If you are looking for some vendors to attend, I know that Tulsa Technology Center has had their students and some instructors set up booths with some really cool displays promoting several careers. I bet other career centers would be able to do the same.

I am teaching a health/guidance class to our 6th graders. This is our first year to try this. A coach and I have 4 groups (2 groups of girls and 2 groups of boys) that we switch every nine weeks. The health portion has a book to work out of - but I have to come up with things for guidance. Does anyone have a curriculum, ideas, or suggestions? 
 
I try to keep it fun with a lot of teamwork/listening/following direction activities. Basically I only need one nine weeks worth of material to use 4 times. Depending on the material, I change things up a bit for the boys and girls.

9th grade--OK History/World History
10th grade--American History
11th grade--Government/Economics (or they take it their senior year)

We also offer Modern History a full year as a history credit, and Native

We do a Career Day every year at Beggs Elementary.
Parents/grandparents/former alumni come and speak to one grade level (1st -
4th) about their career for 15 minutes per class (we have four classes per
grade level).  Many times the speaker will bring something for the students
like rubber bracelets with the company name on them, etc.  You can usually
get a local dentist, health department nurse, minister, banker, etc. if you
are in a small town like we are.  We have coffee and bagels for the
speakers.

At the same time, we have Careers on Wheels set up outside: firetruck,
police, ambulance, Game Warden, electric company, Highway Patrol, heat and
air, National Guard vehicle---even a farrier brings his horse.  One year
Channel 6 in Tulsa brought their helicopter!  During the inside speakers,
the Kindergarten and Pre-K classes attend Career on Wheels.  Then when the
inside speakers are done, the 1st and 2nd tour the Career on Wheels and
then the 3rd and 4th tour.  The Careers on Wheels volunteers are here from
8:30 - 11:30, then we feed them Subway for lunch.

We also do Jr. Achievement in our school and don't have to pay for it as we
use recycled kits and get our own volunteers to teach it.  High school
students teach the Kindergarten Jr. Achievement.  Both Career Day and Jr.
Achievement introduce the students to careers during elementary school.

At McAlester, we moved our Government to the senior year due to the results of surveys completed by our former graduates who felt that when they took Government at the college, they were  expected to know things they hadn?t learned since their freshmen year.

It has worked out well as half of them take the government at our community college.

In all of our middle school classes we have 1 full year of reading and 1
full year of English (ELA).  The reading class includes literature and the

Our 6th graders have one year of language and one year of reading. Our 7th graders have 1/2 year of language and one year of reading. Our 8th graders have one year of?combined ELA (similar to HS). ?We had to cut TWO language teachers last year and that's why our 7th graders' language was cut from a full year to a 1/2 year. We are hoping to correct this next year.? I would love to be able to offer separate language and reading classes for 8th grade, but don't see that as being feasible.

We do a career day event that works great...   We usually do this over a
half-day.  Either we just have the  sessions- or we have also started out
with a guest speaker addressing all students prior to breakout session
talking about "secrets of success" or planning for college, careers in
general.

In the break out sessions, we have 5 sessions of 20 minutes in length with
5 minutes between each session.  One of the mandatory sessions for 9th & 10
is interview/job skills.   The juniors and seniors do a mock interview as
one of their session (Kids line up to interview in order of arrival and
wait for their turn, I have several community volunteer interviewers, and
they each briefly interview 2-3 kids during each 20 minute session.)    I
ask the mock interviewers use a feedback form to give students feedback on
how they did, and give suggestions, etc.   I have found that the
interviewer volunteers enjoy this, and have even had students get hired for
real jobs!

If time allows, I recommend going into classrooms and doing a resume
building lesson with them before hand or enlisting the help of your English
teachers on this.  I have also used incentives and prizes for top
interviewees (prize tickets for those who bring their resume, do a good
job, etc. for end of day drawing).

As for sessions,  I try to get enough speakers so that we can have each
session with 20 or less students.  I just try to get a variety of alums,
parents, community members and college reps to allow for enough sessions.
I get everything confirmed and go into classes about a week ahead and talk
to kids about career day and let them pick their top 5 session requests.  I
work up their schedule in advance with the help my student aids.   It is a
lot of coordination, but something that usually works great in the end.
You could also pre-determine that everyone goes through sessions as a group
by grade to save prep time, but I have found the kids really enjoy getting
to pick their own sessions.

Subject: [Counselors] Math Title Teacher

Turpin school would like to hire another math teacher to work with students
that are still having difficulty passing the math assessments, even after
remediation. I am looking for ways that other schools use a title teacher
for math in the 6-11 grade ranges.  Are the students enrolled in 8th grade
math, as well as a math remediation class?   Is there a curriculum that is
followed in the remediation class?  What qualifies a student to be enrolled
in the class?  Any help or ideas would be useful.

We also have a full year of English and Reading for our 7th and 8th graders at our middle school. Our English class works on grammar/writing and at different times during the year they coordinate with special Science and Geography projects. Our reading classes focus on reading and comprehension.

We work with Seward County Community College/Area Technical School. It has changed from year to year, but basicly the eighth graders pick an area they are interested in and spend about an hour in that area. They then get a tour of the college, giving them an overview of all of the different career training opportunities are available.

We offer math and reading remediation in grades 7--8 as well as HS if a student fails the previous year's assessment. This remediation class is optional and is taken on top of their normal reading and/or math class, so the students must give up an elective. Our teacher works with math and reading students the same hour in the computer lab. She uses Think Through Math and Reading Theory.

Not in the school I am in now but one I substituted in had Math Remediation
as a class beside their regular math class.  They qualified for it because
they didn't meet proficient on the OCCT the year before & it was taken
during a elective hour.

What schools participate in a late start once a week? For those schools that do this how long have you been and what do you do on those late start days? Is it primarily used for PLC's, professional development, etc.  How did parents react to the initial change? And finally what are the pros and cons that you see?

Our remediation isn't optional.  It is in addition to their regular class.
We also use Think Through Math.  This is our first year that the class has
been required for students that didn't pass their test and using TTM.  I am
anxious to see how our students improve this year.  Our MS principal does a
great job providing incentives for student success through our TTM program.
This way it does not feel like a punishment to the students.

I am a first year counselor and I am debating about moving my office next year.  I am currently located in the Administration office. (Principal, Assistant Principal, and 2 secretaries)  I am the only Counselor at our high school.  I have the option to move my office away from the Admin Office toward the classroom hallways, my door would lead directly into the hallways.  Right now students can only access my office through the administration office.  I have thought about this all year but I have many pros and cons and can't decide if it would be beneficial or not.  I would like to hear some of the pros and cons of being in the Administration Office compared to not being in the Office. The counselors office used to be in the hallway office many years ago.  I don't know why it was moved into the Admin Office. Thanks for any advise.

My office is not in the high school building either but in an administrative area with special services and federal programs. I really think it would be beneficial to be in the high school building for easy access by the students.

to come talk to me! They know if the door is closed I'm gone, I'm with
someone or I'm doing testing paperwork that takes a lot of concentration
(lol).

I was curious how other schools handle international students, not foreign exchange students. I have a senior student who just moved to the US at the beginning of the school year. She has no EOI tests.

Does anyone have advice on how to handle the transcripting or EOI testing?

Our counseling office is its own department on a different floor than the admin offices.   It gives us just enough privacy to be able to control traffic flow of students, but leaves us accessible enough that students can come by easily.

My office is directly accessible from the hallway, yet it is just down the hall from the admin office in case I need files, etc. I like it this way because I believe that it gives students, teachers,?and parents who come to my office some privacy. It also gives me privacy if I am on the phone.

I think it is best to be away from the Administration offices.  We were
moved to the administration offices for one school year during construction
and we saw a marked decrease in the number of students walking in to
utilize our services.  We believe that they weren't as comfortable coming
in to the main office.  I would encourage you to be in that hallway office
closer to students!  That would be my choice.

I moved my office away from the administration office at the beginning of
this school year and thought it allowed for a lot more privacy for my
students. But since I cover administrative duties in the absence of the
principal the administration wanted me back in their office so I have moved
back and does not allow for privacy for my students.  At my age group most
of them aren't concerned so I still have students come to me.  If I were
given the choice I would move out of the administration office.

Well, I took the last space left in our high school building, a large
closet for storage.  Best move of my life.  I'm directly off the hallway
and it gives me distance from the main office. I can be at the office in a
jiffy, but it gives kids the ability to stop in.  I think you will see a
difference of traffic if you move.  Main office conveys discipline, not
what you are going for as a counselor.  That is my two cents!

I had an office that you had to enter through the admin office also.? It was a nightmare!! Everyone who entered thought they were in trouble.? Sometimes I was landlocked :) and couldn't get out bc there was a conference going on in the admin office.? GET OUT OF THERE!? You should be accessible?to the students so they will feel like they can come to you.? My 2 cents worth.? Teresa

ACE doesn't require you to test in a subject area that they have already received instruction in.  You may apply an alternate test score: ACT, SAT, WorkKeys, etc.

We had early release for a year or two for extended tutoring but not PLCs.
It became ineffective for us as incentive for students to stay off the list
so we went back to full day. We have several bus kids that sort of just
"hung out" for 45 minutes each Wednesday and sometimes they weren't sure
where they fit in. Eventually they walked to a local fast food restaurant
during that time and returned before buses ran. The kids that were released
early did not embarrass their parents nor the school in that early release.
Parents of students passing were on board but parents of students not
passing thought we were singling their children out so they would call
school and tell us to send their child home due to some family emergency
just so their child could leave when friends did.

I personally think the idea of early release or late start would be great
for PLC purposes but due to busing of kids, we are unable to do so here.
Our PLCs have mandatory meetings during planning periods every Wednesday.
Core subjects have common plans and have had for a few years so that isn't
an issue. The other 3 hours of elective planning periods meet and conquer
site issues like policy and practices (tardies, consistent rule
enforcement, substitute procedures, school culture, etc.) while core
teachers tackle subject related issues like determining essential
objectives, pacing guides, textbook adoptions, common assessments, etc.

"Buy in" with district administration, parents, and nay-say faculty as well
as answering questions of busing issues and schedule conflicts with some of
our fine arts and athletic programs can be viewed as the golden calf.
Everyone will be affected and almost never will "everyone" be on board, but
key players and those in power must be for it. BEST OF WISHES!!! If you get
it to happen, share the secret ingredient!

We enroll them in it as an elective class---ACE remediation math---in
addition to their regular math class.  They go to the class instead of
their elective class. Same with high school. We use IXL (love it!) and
Buckle Down.

Our offices can be accessed from the hall and the main office?in the same area with admin. I do like this, as we are not set aside. You would have connection with all of the comings and goings, parents that happen to stop by (that you need to talk to). We do have a door that can close off the counseling office from the main office.

I am a first year counselor and I am debating about moving my office next year.  I am currently located in the Administration office. (Principal, Assistant Principal, and 2 secretaries)  I am the only Counselor at our high school.  I have the option to move my office away from the Admin Office toward the classroom hallways, my door would lead directly into the hallways.  Right now students can only access my office through the administration office.  I have thought about this all year but I have many pros and cons and can't decide if it would be beneficial or not.  I would like to hear some of the pros and cons of being in the Administration Office compared to not being in the Office. The counselors office used to be in the hallway office many years ago.  I don't know why it was moved into the Admin Office. Thanks for any advise.

This is such a great question. My office for the last 11 years has been behind the secretary's desk in the main office of our middle school. It sits next to the principals office which is off the hallway. Student's have to walk through the office for all to see to get visit with me. There is no door to the hallway so many times I am trapped in and don't get a break. You do get to see the coming and going on of all the office and be first to respond to a student who is sent there. You are getting to answer the phone, get band aids, homework, so you are more accessible any available to many, but it is very busy, noisy and distracting all day. You aren't able to start and finish any task in one setting sometimes even with your door closed. There are pro's and cons to both places.

We had a foreign Senior a few years ago. I have him the PLAN, which was still available, also Workkeys, ACT and he took two EOI's, Geometry and Eng 2 or 3. He was an excellent student and scored well on all of these tests. I called the State Dept about what I needed to do, exactly. I know he had to have Alg 1 and Eng 2 or Equivelent, plus two more, just like students who have been here all the years. He passed more than that, but since you don't get results immediately. I gave him a few extra possibilities. I believe I called Melissa White. He graduated.

I used I-pads for the Winter Re-test at Turpin.  No problems!!! My students
loved that they could use their i-pads.  We did use computers so that the
students had keyboards for the writing portion of the English tests, but I
am sure they could do just as well on the i-pads, using text style
writing.  I am looking forward to testing on the i-pads this spring - hope
it goes as well as the re-tests did!

I called Measured Progress this morning and they are supposed to let me know what the specs are for the labels for 8 /page.  I questioned him about why it was being done this way and he said it is because it takes too much paper to print 1 or 2 to a page.  I explained that I will be using labels and then placing the labels on a sheet of paper, which actually takes more paper and time than if I could just print on one page.  He said he hadn't thought that we would be putting the labels on paper.  He thought we would be using the perforated labels that we would just tear apart and give to the students.  I would think those would be pretty expensive and would almost be like a card stock paper.

However, I have not received an answer from them about which Avery label to use.  If any of you have it figured out, please reply.

I too want to print 1 per page. Yes, it does take more paper, but I use the
back side as scrap paper. This cuts back on teachers having to pass out and
collect a test ticket and scrap paper.

Our test coordinator prints the 27 on the Avery 5160 and said she had no
problems with it. Once printed on the labels, she places them on index
cards and color codes the cards so that someone absent in a subject is more
easily sorted when scheduling the make-up test. (She uses the same process
for EOIs.)

Correction... Our testing coordinator is opting to print the tickets on
colored card stock this year in sheets of 8 due to the non-fitting labels
format. She plans to cut the paper into cards once printed.

We print each subject on a different color of card stock.  They we can sort
who has finished and who still needs to test.
