We do not have an age or grade criteria. I encourage our students to get the projects completed before their senior year to avoid the stress of maybe not graduating. I had a sophomore complete an Algebra I project last year after she failed the exam twice. We have done Algebra I, Geometry, Biology I, and English III so far. The student must make arrangements during the day to work on the project in a teacher's classroom and all projects are due by December 1. We have had success with our projects so far. We also require that parents be on board with the student's decision to complete a project. I give the kids 2 weeks at the beginning of school, then I give them 2 weeks at the end of 1st semester to change for second semester. I have a form that must be initialed by the teacher saying they can leave or come in the class and then signed by the parent. Unless there is a pressing reason we do not allow schedule changes any other time. Sandra Carter-Maysville Our handbook states "A student may not drop or add a class after two weeks of the semester. We have a total just under 3,000 students in 8-11 for the pre-enrollment process. It is taking four of us four weeks to accomplish this task. Once we develop and secure our master based on initial numbers we will spin schedules in early summer. Once we are back in session in August we allow students to 'request' a move for the first 9 days of term. All seats must be secured by the 10th day. We allow for requests of really anything but will only moved if appropriate or needed. We do address the process in our enrollment guide which you can access on our website.?Hope this helps.? Below is our schedule change policy. It is in the curriculum guide, the handbook, and on the change request forms. We have seen a huge reduction in requests since we instituted the 3 day wait period for most requests. We also will only make changes if it doesn't drop a class size below our minimum for the class to make onto the master. We only allow students to drop a preAP or AP course after meeting with their asst. principal because we also meet with each student one-on-one to choose the proper classes & parents must sign their enrollment forms. Students have until we pull numbers for the master schedule discussions to make changes to their pre-enrollment, which is usually at the beginning of April. Students can change from a sit-in class to an online course anytime throughout the year. *Prior to and during the first 3 days of class, schedule change requests may be made for the following reasons ONLY:* o Computer error = blank or doubled course, course out of sequence. o Credit received for course previously. o Prerequisite for class not met. o Missing required course for graduation. o Add/ Drop classes for TCC or Tulsa Tech enrollment *Requests for ANY OTHER reason can only be made after the end of school on the 3rd day through the end of the 5th day school. *Requests must be returned to the counseling office ? signed - by the end of the 5th day of the semester to be considered. This is what I share at the retreats: For purposes of calculating the GPA for the 17-unit core curriculum, all courses except fine arts or speech, that are transcript with a P shall be assigned a grade level of D or the lowest passing grade assigned by the high school. If no grade is given or if the grade is a Pass, then OK Promise averages it in as a "D". They use the NCAA policy as their standard. Here is a little further clarification from OSDE Melissa White, Executive Director of Counseling/ACE, with the OSDE stated: The original grade should never be removed from a transcript. If you are replacing a failed course with a proficient test score, the competencies should be transcript in addition to the original grade earned. It should look the same as when a student failed a course, then took the course over in summer school. Both grades are reflected on the transcript. Members of this group who graduated six years ago still contact each other during the holidays or on anniversaries of their parent's death. One year we had 17 kids who qualified and the smallest group has been 6. It was a great time for each to learn from and lean on each other since nobody else could relate. All of the kids came from varied backgrounds and varied reasons for parent deaths. They all say that this was the most helpful thing that helped them through the tough times. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
