We had about 15 students in the fall and 12 this spring. We used an English teacher. Many of the students who need projects are on IEP. We have a few who are doing one with their IEP teacher in a lab class as well. Students have done English III, Algebra I & Biology primarily. We tried in the past to just assign an administrator to monitor the projects but found that if students did not have a designated time to work on it they didn't get anything done. The counselors have talked about starting juniors on projects in the spring if they have attempted a test twice and we believe they might not pass. It is pretty stressful to wait until the senior year to begin. I don't know what we will do next year if we are short teachers due to budget and don't have a teacher to devote to it. Our senior principal is the administrator responsible for projects. The important thing is that they are passionate about what they are involved in. All that said, in terms of giving them an enriching experience, an opportunity to learn a lot about the specific topic, meeting new people completely different than those they are around all the time, and for giving them a bigger picture of the world, then it is not a bad thing. It can be a tremendous growth experience. And even though they do cost a lot, there might be scholarships--just need to ask. Carol Spears College and Academic Advisor Regent Preparatory School Tulsa, OK 918-663-1002 Some are legit...some are money makers with good information and experiences...some are money makers with nothing worth attending... I tend to follow-up by checking on who was the nominator for said honor. If it is a list serve I advise against attendance. If it is a teacher that verifies the nomination then I check if the company is a non-profit. Occasionally Snopes.com will have an entry of inquiry to check as well. Hope that helps! We had a student that attended last year. She had a wonderful time and said the speakers were extraordinary. I do have the same thoughts, though, about the cost and them just trying to make money. She did come back very motivated and excited for her future in the medical field and said that it really inspired her to want to be a doctor as well as increased her interest in specific fields of medicine. I think for her, she would say it was worth the money to attend but she is a pretty high achieving/motivated student that probably truly invested in the conference! The instruction may be provided as a part of any course. A school administrator may waive the curriculum requirement required by this subsection for an eligible student who has a disability. A student shall not be required to meet the requirement of this subsection if a parent or guardian of the student objects in writing. All students enrolled in a virtual charter school in grades nine through twelve shall not be subject to the requirements of this section. All students enrolled in physical education classes in grades nine through twelve may receive instruction in the techniques of the Heimlich maneuver. C. The State Board of Education shall establish a procedure for monitoring the requirements set forth in subsection B of this section. Instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation shall incorporate psychomotor skills training and shall be based upon an instructional program which is nationally recognized and is based upon the most current national evidence-based Emergency Cardiovascular Care guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator. D. Each public school district board of education shall ensure that a minimum of one certified teacher and one noncertified staff member at each school site receives training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the Heimlich maneuver each year. E. School districts may use state funds allocated to the school district for professional development to pay for or to reimburse teachers and support personnel for training in the administration of first aid and techniques of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the Heimlich maneuver. F. Nothing in this section shall be construed to impose liability on any school district or school district employee for injury or death of any student, teacher, or other person resulting from any cardiopulmonary or choking incident or to absolve any school district or school employee of liability that might otherwise exist under The Governmental Tort Claims Act. G. For purposes of this section, "psychomotor skills" means the use of hands-on practice to support cognitive learning. H. A school district may use emergency medical technicians, paramedics, police officers, firefighters, teachers, other school employees or other similarly qualified individuals or organizations to provide the instruction prescribed by this section. Two or more school districts may enter into an interlocal or multidistrict cooperative agreement for the purpose of jointly and comparatively fulfilling the requirements of this section. Instruction provided pursuant to this section is not required to result in certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. If instruction is intended to result in certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the course instructor shall be authorized by an instructional program which is nationally recognized and is based upon the most current national evidence-based Emergency Cardiovascular Care guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator or a similar nationally recognized association to provide the instruction. If he has an average or above score, he may be placed in 6th grade. ( I know people who won't place them if they don't have a 90+ on the assessment. We let kids pass who have a 60, so I don't agree with the 90+) I think the Woodcock assessment is more accurate. I had that situation last year. We had a student enroll that dropped out in the first grade, but was old enough to be in the 5th grade. After speaking to our District Administrators, I was advised to put him in the Fourth Grade. We would send him to a Second Grade class to learn math or another subject but was mainly in the Fourth Grade. If you put him in the lower Grade he is more likely to become a drop out. We have students being pulled out of public education to be home-schooled or to attend online virtual school. They come with nothing usually from both. We make them take a star reading and math test at the grade level they should be. We then look at the scores, talk to the parents and student, before deciding placement. This sometimes is very difficult to do, especially when they are not ready to be where they think they should be. We have nothing for this in our policy book. We will be taking care of that before the new school year rolls around. If anyone has a school policy they would like to share, that would be fantastic! We use the WRAT grade placement test. It is a quick assessment, but not as in depth as the Woodcock. When I as counselor in Guymon, we gave them a test for grade level they wished to enroll in or had completed. That test was given to Ass't Sup. in charge of Testing. That person decided where to place them. Nancy G. Last year, I pushed it back as late as I could because our teachers really needed that extra time for teaching because our test scores were very low the year before. Having more time for curriculum is a pro, but the cons are: do you have enough computers to push it back, do you have enough time to get all special-ed small groups done, and will you have time for make-ups for absent students? We offered an attendance incentive, to ensure that students would be there which helped on make-ups. We had a big party the last week or 2nd to the last week of school for those who just showed-up and behaved during all testing days. I hope this helps. Michelle Pursell Carl Albert High School Counselor Q-Z We start early and do make-up until the last minute I work at a small K-12 school. We always start our younger student's testing right away. It takes a long time even at a small school to do the small groups with accommodations. Junior high and high school we spread out a little more but try to be done by first week of May to allow time for make-ups. I have some teachers that like to wait for their students to be tested last but I have too many variables to consider to do that every time. It doesn't seem to make a difference either way. Most students are just ready to get it over with. Sent from my iPhone HOW much time is enough time for makeups?
