My school is looking for a solid Reading Intervention program (preferably
researched based).  Our Reading Intervention teacher would be working with
small groups of 2-4 students, grades 1st-5th for about 30 minutes a day.  Do
any of you know of a good program that you could recommend that would be
appropriate for this time frame, age level, and group size.  Any information
that you could share would be appreciated.  Thanks!

You can start by looking the http://niea.org/ website where there is a tab for scholarships that should be helpful for starters.  The American Indian Graduate Center administers several scholarships.

The student should be able to apply to their specific tribe for assistance. Most of the Native Alaskan tribes have scholarships offering assistance to their citizens. There are some outside scholarships that are specifically for native students. Most of these are major specific, such as the Indian Health Services scholarships.  The student should contact their specific tribe.

Section 1148. High School Seniors - Enrollment in College Courses, page 688 in the school law book, http://sde.ok.gov/sde/sites/ok.gov.sde/files/2015%20%20LAW%20BOOK%20FINAL%20%282%29.pdf says:
E.  When a student earns college credit through concurrent enrollment, school districts shall provide academic credit for any concurrently enrolled higher education courses that are correlated with the academic credit awarded by the institution of higher education.  Academic credit shall only be transcripted as elective credit if there is no correlation between the concurrent enrollment higher education course and a course provided by the school district. (70-628.13)

Bottom line is the State Department of Education/State Board of Education does not have a policy on how credits equate nor is it in the state law. The local school must compare the college syllabus with the high school syllabus or standards or course description (what is being taught in the course) and make the decision of what high school class the college class will be transcripted for.

The State Regents have a policy for the purpose of calculating workload.

A high school student may enroll in a combined number of high school and college courses per semester not to exceed a full-time college workload of 19 semester credit hours. For purposes of calculating workload, one-half high school unit shall be equivalent to three semester credit hours of college work.

Comment from Irala McGee, Director of Scholarship and Grant Administration, OK State Regents
Concurrent enrollment is a very good idea for a variety of reasons; however, I think each student should be warned about possible ramifications and encouraged to visit with the scholarship office at the school or schools they are looking at for future college attendance.
Classes taken concurrently may not effect scholarships but they likely will effect SAP, Satisfactory Academic Progress.  Students must be cautioned about poor grades or poor completion rates in these classes.  If they drop a couple or get a couple of "D's" in these classes in high school, the situation will follow them and they may find themselves in a probationary financial aid status immediately upon becoming a regular college student.

Talking to each individually, calling parents. If there is suicidal ideation, we recommend (but cannot require) a note from a mental health professional that they've seen before returning to school.

Our first step is to inform parents if they don't already know. The second is to refer them to individual counseling and /or family counseling with a counselor on non-school time. We ask about the issue(s) that have brought on the behavior. We discuss its dangers. We discuss positive outlets for frustrations. (We like sports and activity based outlets.)We make time for the student to seek redirection and support during the day at school and a "check in" with the counselor or another teacher or administrator, to keep the student accountable and on path to success. This is often a way to cry for help, so we give them as much support as we know how.

Often, a student will be directed to us by another student, who is concerned. We try to gather them a support network of friends, but also include other quality adults.

We are a small school, so we have some insights and closer connections and knowledge with students that may not be available to everyone. We also have seen more than would have assumed of this behavior.

Have they applied for DRS (Department of Rehabilitation Services)?  The student does not have to be on an IEP or 504 to apply to get money from DRS.  They do have stipulations and they grant money on certain tier levels has to be available, but it is worth a try!  Their parents need to go to the DRS office or they can download the application form off of the internet.

Refer them to Vocational Rehabilitation


You could also have the students Google scholarships for hard of hearing, etc.  I just googled it and got this website: http://www.collegescholarships.org/scholarships/deaf.htm

They will definitely have to do some searching and remind them not to pay for anything!




I did call DRS and they indicated there wasn't any help but I know of kids that have had their college paid for through DRS.  I will tell the parents to go directly to DRS.  Thank you for the information.

We always need to notify the parents/guardians, first. I've had several cutters over the years. A lot of them aren't doing it to commit suicide. It's more of their way of handling stress or whatever emotion that's causing it. Stress can cause people to drink alcohol, over-eat, smoke cigarettes, etc. Cutting is what some kids choose to do. I explain it to the kids and the parents like this: Houses on the coast are often built on 4 columns so when the waves get high during a storm, the house won't get flooded. If one of the columns gets destroyed, the house has only 3 columns to sit on. To keep the house balanced, the owner may put a temporary column in it's place. I say the kids are like the houses on the beach. When stress, anxiety, or anger comes along and they lose one of their columns, they cut in order to, temporarily, stay balanced. They seem to understand that visual. Cutting may become an addiction. I always tell the parent/guardian that it'd be wise to seek out a professional counselor, if their child is cutting. Also, they're putting themselves at risk, physically. There are so many bad bacteria floating around these days. If a parent refuses to get the child help, I report them to DHS, due to emotional neglect. I've had copycat cutters, too. These are the ones that want to fit in with a group of peers who may have a cutter amongst them. Sometimes, these are the group of kids who come from broken homes, alcoholism, drug addiction, etc. They will often wear dark clothing, but not always. I call these kids my "fringe" kids. They're out on the edge fascinated with the "dark" world. The copycat cutters will, often, stop, after I talk with them, but there have been some that started out copycat cutting, but became addicted to it. I hope this helps. There is a workshop located in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Little Rock, Arkansas,
and Memphis, Tenn. that is sponsored by Cross Country Education entitled,
"Breaking the Habit of Self-Harm".  It sounds quite informative.  Somewhat
expensive but not as costly if  5 or more attend.  If you need more
information just let me know.  I appreciate everyone's input on this
topic.  It is a definite issue.

I do hope that everyone was able to relax a bit over spring break and enjoy time with family!  I am glad to have you back!  The rest of the year is goin to fly, so hang on!

Our Counselor Summer Institute registration is now open and ready for you to register.  It is July 11-14 at Quartz Mountain Lodge near Lone Wolf.  Here is the link for Quartz: http://www.quartzmountainresort.com/area-recreation.php

Please make sure that you mark it on your calendar if you plan to attend.  If you register and you cannot attend, please let me know as soon as possible.  We don't want to waste tax payer dollars!

Yes, it will be FREE lodging and meals for YOU this summer, yay!

At the summer institute, we will have speakers regarding legislation, school laws and rules, financial aid, scholarships, FAFSA changes, round table discussions and more, plus a lot of laughter and sharing!
(I am working on finding speakers to help you and your students regarding cutters and suicide.)  I'll send out an agenda in May.

We plan to start the institute around 4:30 on Monday, July 11, to give you travel time during the day.  We will end on Thursday, July 14 around noon.  Monday will be the only day that we will go until 5:00, Tuesday and Wednesday we will end around 4:00-4:30.  Your evenings will be free to relax, do whatever you would like, or join us on the patio.

I just asked our Algebra I teacher that uses the EOI Project and this was her reply:
"We chose Leaps & Bounds because it was easier."

I don't know if this helped any. They have done several projects and are in the process of several more students working on them.

My own daughter completed the "Leaps and Bounds" project.  As a high
performing IEP student, it was still plenty difficult...but we were able to
complete it successfully.

I use Virtual Hope Box for certain students. It's free. You can show
students which aspects they can use. It is one that I share with some
parents as well.

My kids never did any of their summer academies, but my daughter did do a 1 day enrichment course in Wichita they offered one year and it was fantastic.  Well worth it.  Duke TIPS is a quality program and they do a great job.

All you do is fill out the form on the single sign on for the state department.  Then I keep the project in a filing cabinet, put a note in their file, and also document it on PowerSchool.

Yes, we use a 10 point modified scale if necessary.  Example:  50-60=D,
60-70=C, 70-80=B, 80-100=A

Subject: [Counselors] Modified Grading Scales

As with all IEP's, would be a team decision. I asked the same question to a person at the state department once and they leaned more toward modifying the content/amount rather than the grade, but overall it is up to the IEP
team. I have implemented a similar scale to the one discussed above before. Andrea Kunkel (I think she is state department) would be an excellent person to ask. She is well versed in special education law and requirements.


They may. Determined by IEP team. We have standardized ours for most but have a few that are unique to some.

Most end up with same 10-point scale as regular students for A-Ds with us extending the F range to a full 10 point as well. Currently our standard grading scale is only at a 5 point. We do have some of our more severely
disabled students at a modified scale down to the lowest F being 50.

Up to the IEP team to determine what is best for the student. It does not have to be for all classes and can pertain to just the one(s) needed. Technically, a student could have as many grading scales as there are
classes.
