I attended this seminar last year with two of my teachers.  We really took
back a lot of useful information.  The presenter is not just a therapist
who works with students, but lives it with her own family.  She is very
creditable and presented from all areas (school, home and counseling).  I
would recommend going if you are able.

Have you looked into Muscogee (Creek) Nation? I know their Behavioral Health and Youth Services provide all kinds of resources and sessions for youth!

Consider contacting someone on a college campus near you that is in charge of teaching student success or freshmen orientation. I have seen the content that Panhandle State University uses for theirs and it is very clear, very relevant, but not sensationally graphic or too risky in my opinion. It keeps the topic as the topic and makes it real but does not commercialize it. I cannot remember the name of the video series used but I do know Sarah Green is the contact person on campus. Maybe there is a high school version or maybe it is appropriate for high school to use the same one.

We show puberty videos with the school nurse and myself in grades 5 and 6. We show HIV/AIDs videos in 8th and 10th with the school nurse and myself. We separate the boys/girls in grades 5, 6, and 8, but I believe they watch the 10th grade video in biology classes with mixed groups.  We ordered our videos from Human Relations Media.


We offer this in 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th grade.  The Choctaw Nation comes in and does a program with our students for 10 weeks.  It is a progressive program and the students start out with basic information and then get into
more advanced topics as they age up.

This is a great opportunity for us and it gets the kids attention.  Being presented by an outside source is something they tend to pay attention to.

We present the AIDS education to our 7th and 10th graders. A local female
nurse for the girls and a male doctor from the community come to present a
power point.  Each of the four presentations last approximately an hour. I
have the presentation printed off in a notebook to show parents in early
spring during pre-enrollment for incoming 7th graders and also during
parent teacher conferences in the fall right before the presentation. The
permission note the parents sign lists all the objectives that are covered.

We have a student that has turned 18 and doesn't want her parent to receive
her grades because she isn't living with her mother any longer...however
she hasn't changed that status with the school.  Does anybody know of any

According to law, 18 year olds are independent; however, our school district has a board policy that says the student must sign in-house paperwork declaring independent status upon 18—otherwise, we still contact parents.

We have a student that has turned 18 and doesn't want her parent to receive her grades because she isn't living with her mother any longer...however she hasn't changed that status with the school.  Does anybody know of any official FERPA or HIPPA paper to sign?? And do all 18 year olds have to sign something?  Thanks for your help!

I am looking for a type of curriculum, ideas, lessons, etc. for our group of students with multiple current failing grades.  We want to look at the whole student, not punitive, but rather an exploration of their strengths.  So basically, strength based curriculum and if it is research driven all the better.

When a student turns 18 years old or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, these rights under FERPA transfer from the student's parents to the student. Under FERPA, a student to whom the rights have transferred is known as an "eligible student." Although the law does say that the parents' rights afforded by FERPA transfer to the "eligible student," FERPA clearly provides ways in which an institution can share education records on the student with his or her parents.
While concerns have been expressed about the limitations on the release of information, there are exceptions to FERPA's general rule that educational agencies and institutions subject to FERPA may not have a policy or practice of disclosing "education records" without the written consent of the parent (at the K-12 level) or the "eligible student."
When may a school disclose information to parents of dependent students?
Under FERPA, schools may release any and all information to parents, without the consent of the eligible student, if the student is a dependent for tax purposes under the IRS rules.
 The student need not sign anything.  By virtue of their age, their rights transfer.  A counselor in this situation has an ethical responsibility to inform the student of their rights and how to proceed.
