After checking with our attorney, we had a meeting with the parent and student and with their input, made a plan for to allow them to use the faculty restroom and discussed the pronoun preference thing. The principal and I followed up and met with the teachers to make them aware of the situation, and discuss concerns like the restroom and discuss the pronoun thing. Our transgender student and parent were very understanding of the reality that the pronoun usage might be difficult to adjust to, but with everyone making a good faith effort to respect his wishes, and the student being understanding not to take it personally if someone messes up, it has worked out. Some of our teachers struggled and had concerns at first but everything eventually fell in line. It didn't seem to faze our students and we haven't had any problems with providing educational services that are due to his gender identity. Good luck. However, if an 11th grader needs the PSAT/NMSQT test to potentially qualify for National Merit, I have always have referred them to the information in the Student Guide that tells them what to do if they can't take the test. I do not see that in the Student Guide this year but this is in the PSAT/NMSQT Coordinator Manual on Page 23. Entering Scholarship Programs if a Student Is Unable to Test Advise students who are unable to take the PSAT/NMSQT to immediately contact the scholarship program(s) they wish to enter. Scholarship programs are described in the 2019 PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide. All requests for information about another route of entry to the National Merit Scholarship Program conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) should be mailed to NMSC (see the inside front cover). The letter must be postmarked on or before April 1, 2020. The earlier a school official or student writes to NMSC, the more options will be available for scheduling test dates. The alternate entry request should include the student’s name and home address, the contact information of the person making the request, the name and address of the high school, and a brief explanation of why the student missed the test. If you have any questions, please call NMSC. National Merit used to say a student could take the SAT in lieu of the PSAT/NMSQT but not sure how that is going to work now. We also had an issue last year when an Hispanic student could not finish the test and the National Hispanic Recognition Program would not budge on letting her take the SAT as an alternate test. They said only the PSAT/NMSQT test taken on a testing day would count. The father took it all the way to College Board and the NHRP Board and they finally made an exception and let her take the SAT so if you have an Hispanic student who could qualify but can not take the test be sure to contact NHRP ASAP. 2019 PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide Page 8: The National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) identifies outstanding Hispanic/Latino students and shares information about them with interested colleges and universities. To be eligible, you must be at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino (as defined by the NHRP), meet a minimum PSAT/NMSQT cutoff score for your state, and have a minimum grade point average. This is what we were told we had to do because of the Wave. When they finish the class they send the grade to our register and she puts the grade on the transcript. If a student is taking a course for credit recovery online, we call it the course name. Ex. English 1, but we list our online teacher as the teacher and the computer lab as the classroom. If they are taking an elective class for first time credit, we do the same. That way we know where the student is located when we are looking for them and that grade will show up on the transcript at semester. We only give credit for the course completed online, not both. At Shawnee High School we call the class Credit Recovery. The class is listed on the student schedule but student does not receive credit unless they complete the credit in Odysseyware. We also started listing NC for No Credit on the transcript if the student sat in Credit Recovery but did not complete the credit during the semester. Hello, all! Question: If a student is able to take a course online (through Odysseyware, for ex) during a class time/within their schedule: 1. What do you call that class? We called it Critical Thinking/Study Skills. That is how it was listed on the student's schedule. 2. Does the student get the regularly awarded credit for that class or just the credit for the courses completed online? The class on the student’s schedule always says Critical Thinking until after all the teachers are gone for the summer then ….. 2. I go into the system create another class for the teacher of record that same hour the student took critical thinking and then I enroll that student in that class all year long. 3. Then I give the student the grade they earned in Odysseyware for each semester. *“There are far, far better things * *ahead than ANY we leave behind.”* *_C. S.
