OKEPAS Student Preparation list serv ā€“ We send out information regarding PreACT/ACT information, counselor conferences, our workshop information, job postings sent every Tuesday, and other information for you. You cannot post anything on this list serv. 1. OSRHE Student Prep PK-12 Counselor Discussion Board(the one you are reading now) ā€“ On this list serv, you can post! You were added to this list serv because you have attended an overnight counselor conference/summer institute. You can ask questions of other counselors or if you need help with something, regarding whatever, this is the list serv to do that on. You have seen some questions come through but no responses. Donā€™t be scared to reply it comes straight to us before we ā€œreleaseā€ the question. You can remove your name from your signature line if you want to be anonymous and then send the email to counselors at lists.onenet.net. Again we, the Student Prep Team, is the moderator of this list serv, so we see your question or comment before we ā€œreleaseā€ it for others to see. When are you giving it? How are you keeping track of it? etc. Great questions Cassie! Anyone feel free to share what they are doing. I also wanted to share some questions asked during our fall workshops regarding the citizenship test, I asked Catherine Boomer at SDE for the answers, her contact information is at the end of the questions: 1. Is there an actual test that all schools give? There is a test (actually a study guide) that the legislation makes reference to ā€“ itā€™s on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. Itā€™s the 2008 test, just for reference. The legislation references a 100 question test, and the 2020 test is over 120 questions. That website also has the test translated in numerous languages, should you need it. 2. Where do I get this test? The actual test is open-ended. Luckily, the Oklahoma Council for Social Studies developed a number of U.S. Naturalization Test Prep Resources, including a multiple choice version of the test, a Google Form version of the test, and even flash cards and discussion notes for class. There is also a link to the actual legislation at the top (thatā€™s handy to read; itā€™s very vague, so you will understand why thereā€™s not a lot of structure to this. The good news is that it is left to the districts to determine how they want to administer and implement it). 3. Does a teacher just give the test in the classroom and then tell us if the students pass? Your teachers could give it in the classroom; note that students need a 60% or better to pass. Some schools are posting the test on Canvas; some schools are giving half the test at the end of each semester in 9th grade in whatever social studies course their students are taking; some schools are incorporating it into their 8th grade or HS US History courses. There are many different ways to implement it, and your district is free to make it work for your students. 4. Then do we just note that on the transcript? It should be noted on the transcript; there was a committee working on how to implement this, so I expect more guidance will be coming about this soon. 5. Thinking of doing the test in the 8th grade. Would that work? You can definitely administer the test in 8th grade; just note that the requirement starts with your freshmen class this year; the class of 2025. Note it is included on the Graduation Checklists developed by OSDE. Contact information: Catherine Boomer, M.Ed. If a student is on an IEP or has health issues (ex: severe asthma or allergies) or a physical disability, they may qualify for Vocational Rehab. The amount of money they get depends on the availability of funds and the nature of need. My son has severe scoliosis. We have a fabulous voc rehab contact. There is an initial interview and a determination as to the level of disability. He was able to receive $$ to help pay for his college this year. It's worth pursuing. Call me if you have any questions. Krista Smith, ksmith at blackwell.k12.ok.us It is Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services (OKDRS), when IEPs are written, starting when a student turns 16, the IEP teacher does a referral for the student to OKDRS. When the referral is sent in, OKDRS will then in turn get in touch with the student/parents and do an interview. Depending on how severe the disability is, will determine how long the wait will be for them to start receiving services. The last school I was teaching in had a Work Study Program for students and they would work on campus and then would get paid. They would work with custodians, in the cafeteria, or with a classroom teacher, depending on the best fit for them. If you are native, you may also qualify for Chickasaw Voc Rehab. That is what my daughter used before the funds w/ Voc Rehab became available. The cops are called and depending on circumstances they are usually set up with the county juvenile officer, and it goes from there. My county does not have a drug dog, but two of my surrounding counties do. They are always more than happy to bring their dogs out when I call them. I usually have them come out once or twice a year just to do a run through. They don't charge I am sure I have students that hide it in those places, but the ones we've caught have all been caught smoking it, or we have found in cars, backpacks, and pockets. At our school, students are not allowed to drive to school, participate in extracurricular activities, etc. for 20 days if they fail a drug test. That can be reduced to 10 days, but they have to complete 4 hours of drug counseling at school with the school counselor. -----Original Message----- What have other small schools done when a student is caught with marijuana at school, that they got from the home, to stop the spread of this problem? What $/funds are used for drug dogs. The cost is $250. per visit. How do you find it when students hide in their crotch or bra? I am wanting to survey the teachers to see what they believe to be the main issues in their classroom/school (i.e, absences, tardiness, disrespect, not doing work, etc.) and what they feel is/are major contributing factors, (i.e, drugs, alcohol, phones, lack of consequences, etc). I am wanting the survey to be anonymous so teachers would be more willing to give input. Thank you -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have joined this program this year. Our FCCLA student group is taking it on. They give a good chunk of money to your participating student organization if you complete certain tiers. Their expectations seem do-able and not "too much" on the students. The activities are relevant to our youth as well! Message-ID: Is anyone familiar with or using a program called IntelliSpark and ScholarCentric to track and provide student support? We recently met with a representative from the company and were impressed, but since it's quite pricey we would like some information about how it's working in other schools before we proceed with purchasing. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
