April 3 Message-ID: <44313568.5000303@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you had a fantastic weekend in spite of losing that hour's sleep. The weather was really enjoyable. Good for getting out and doing all those things you'd been wanting to do while you were cooped up all winter. And that extra hour of daylight in the evenings now will give you an even better opportunity. My husband's already been commenting that the grass is about to need mowing. Somehow he didn't sound too thrilled about this. I'm happy to report that the 4H spaghetti dinner to benefit the Cancer Relay for Life made almost $1200.00 yesterday. Not too shabby, huh? I hope some of the rest of you are involved in groups that also sponsor activities to benefit this worthy cause. We have a great menu planned for you today: Turkey Stuffing Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Green beans Candied yams Pasta bar Baked potatoes Our fast food is Burgers and Fries. And for dessert we have German Chocolate Cake. Come on over, Rhoda 8-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... April 4 Message-ID: <44328325.7030205@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, I can tell it's going to be a crazy day today. There are about half a million high school kids swarming all over campus for scholastic contests. Several of them came in for breakfast and directions as to what the MIT building was, or BAK, or PRT and where they were. This is my first time to experience all this. We've had to shuffle people around so we can have extra help for Susie up in the Coffee Shop for today to help with the crowd of kids coming in. I'll get to be out in the Cafeteria cashiering at lunch since Irene will be upstairs, so if you come in to eat lunch you will actually get to see me today, rather than just reading my menu. I'm wearing my "April is Child Abuse Prevention Month" pin that I got at the Public Library yesterday, to remind me not to beat my daughter who is suffering from Jr. High brain damage. I've been told by several mothers that this too will pass. Good grief, I hope so! She forgets everything, (homework, where her shoes are, etc.) and what she doesn't forget she loses. And some of it is mine! Our menu for today includes: Chicken parmesan Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli and cheese sauce Corn Baby carrots Baked potato bar And today we have a lunch special for $3.50 featuring: BBQ on a bun Fries Drink Dessert Our desserts for today are Cherry, Peach and Apple Cobbler. Put some ice cream on top of that and you've got something really good. Come on over, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Time really does fly when you're having fun, doesn't it? I had a very enjoyable evening attending our Storytelling Group at the Gallery downtown yesterday. This would be really good for some of you that are not from here and would like to hear stories of how we who have lived here all our lives (so far) grew up. It's funny how some of the things that we do and accept as normal, other people find strange, and some of the things they do are completely foreign to us. It is the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm at the Gallery, across from Adelitas and we'd be glad to have you and your stories, if you'd like to share them, or glad for you to come and listen to some of ours. Yesterday was quite busy on campus with all the scholastic contest kids, and I hear Friday will be busy also, with FFA Interscholastic Contests happening then. We have a really good menu for you today: Lasagna Garlic bread Oven fried potatoes Corn Okra Green beans Our fast food is Beef and Cheese nachos. And for dessert come and get some wonderful Strawberry Shortcake. Rhoda :-D -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Teachers: Please consider giving "bonus points" to those students willing to volunteer to donate blood. The goal of this drive is to achieve 110 units of blood. Currently, there are only 40 commitments. You may sign up to donate in the Dean's Office. You can also show up during the times of the blood drive but persons with appointments will be taken first. Great for being outside, but it sure has got the ticks crawling around like crazy looking for something or someone to latch onto. Be sure and spray on something to keep them off of you when you go out. It seems like they are much more of a threat than they were when I was growing up. Used to, they were just a nuisance, now it seems they can causes diseases that can kill you. I walked down through the woods yesterday in spite of the ticks, just to see springtime. I noticed some fuzzy material on the ground and couldn't figure out what it was, whether it was fur or what, then I looked up and way up high in a pine tree I could see a squirrel nest that partially torn up and hanging down. I don't know how squirrels manage to weave such a cozy nest out of what looks like a pile of leaves, but this material on the ground looked like it had some small jute rope or something woven through it. Interesting. Then looking down, I noticed a mole hill crossing the path. It's pretty interesting the things you can discover if you just get out of the recliner. And the smell of the wild plum blossoms at this time of the year is heavenly! April 10 Blood Drive Today Message-ID: <443A70EE.10404@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you all had a great weekend. We had a PAWS adoption day Saturday in front of Roy's Grocery Store and were able to adopt out 12 puppies that mostly came from the local pound. As most of you probably know, if pound dogs do not get adopted within a certain time period they will be killed, so we feel really good that we were able to give this group a chance at a good life. I saw on the news this morning where a man's life had been saved by his little "$5 garage sale dog", who warned him that his home was on fire. Who knows? Maybe some of our little pound puppies will do something heroic like that someday. At least now they'll have a chance to. Don't forget to go and donate blood today. The Blood Drive is in the Miller Hall Lobby and runs from 10:00 - 3:15 today and from 10:00 to 2:00 tomorrow. There is a drastic shortage of all types of blood, and it will go to benefit our local hospital as well as several surrounding ones. You could be saving the life of someone very important to you by just taking this simple action. More volunteers are needed to reach the quota of blood that is needed. Our menu for today includes: Taco topping for chips or rice Steamed red potatoes Broccoli cuts Spanish rice Refried beans Baked potatoes Our fast food is Hot Ham and Cheese on a bun and French Fries. And for dessert get a luscious piece of Cherry Nut Cake. Come and enjoy a nutritious meal and then go donate blood to help save a life. I guess the county had orders to come and tear up the little beaver dam down the hill from my house yesterday. That really bummed me out, even though I was expecting it to happen. It was really starting to shape up into a nice little habitat down there with the beaver, a couple of Muscovy ducks that had migrated from my pond, a heron stopping by regularly and even a wild duck swimming around down there. I enjoyed getting to go by there and see what had turned up to enjoy the little pond. Oh well, the beaver will be back! April 13 Coffee Shop Closed Today Message-ID: <443E6A62.8020501@eosc.edu> Hi Everybody, I know everybody is really ready for a good long Easter weekend. I hope we all have a safe and enjoyable one. I heard the first whippoorwill I've heard this year last night. That's always a neat thing to me. And as warm as it has been, it really feels like summertime. I think we're supposed to have another PAWS adoption day this weekend while the weather is still nice. The Coffee Shop will be closed today, since we're short handed in the Cafeteria and Susie will be down here working with us. Sorry for the inconvenience. It was slow here in the Cafeteria this morning, since a lot of the students are probably already gone home, the DOC class is graduating and a lot of them didn't bother getting up early to come in for breakfast, and the Spring Formal was last night, so I'm thinking a lot of the students that are still here were really dragging after their "night in Paris". I saw some of the decorations for the dance in the Ballroom yesterday and it was really impressive. I believe Amy Fair and Elizabeth Duncan were responsible for this event, and it looked like they were really doing a good job. Congratulations to our DOC graduates today. Now they get to go back to the real world that they've been missing while they've been putting in their time here. I hear there are some softball games here starting at 1:00 if you get a chance to go and support our Mountaineers. Load up your lawnchair and your sunblock and get out there. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Monarch veggie mix Corn Hot rolls Our fast food is Chili Cheese Nachos. It's really supposed to be hot the next couple of days and then back down to a more normal temperature for this time of year. I'm ready for it to cool down some since our air conditioning is either not working or got turned off somewhere this weekend, and the new DOC group said it was hot over there last night too. It sure seems odd for it to be this hot this early in the year. Maybe there is something to global warming. It sure seems like we have a lot more warm weather and less cold than we used to. We had a little bit of excitement this weekend when a neighbor's fire from their yard clean-up project got a little out of hand and came over our fence back by the pond. The fire department was right on top of it though. They showed up and almost had it put out before I even knew what was happening, and fortunately there was no damage to anyone or any property, just some debris got burned off. Please keep Novella's daughter, Shellie Rowe, in your thoughts and prayers today as she is undergoing surgery and Novella is off to be with her. We couldn't meet everyone's requested time, but we are doing the best we can in the short time frame remaining before the end of semester. This training is open to all current female students, faculty, staff and their teen daughters. The training's are free and will all be held in Field House 201. The dates for training are: Tuesday, April 25, 2006 3:00-5:00 p.m. 7:00-9:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2006 4:00-6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2006 3:00-5:00 p.m. 7:00-9:00 p.m. The instructor for all five classes will be Amanda Wingo. The training's are very good and would be beneficial to all - even as a refresher course. I pray that you will never have a need in your life to put this instruction into action. However, knowledge is power and it is better to be proactive rather than reactive. Don't be caught off guard. Looking out for you. If there's any justice, we'll get our two spring days back in the middle of summer when we'll really appreciate them. Fortunately, according to the weather report I saw, it should be getting much cooler tomorrow, back in the 70's the way it ought to be. I'm ready. Our air conditioning is either not working at all in here or is taking a long time to get down here to my level. They say heat rises, so if it's this hot down where I am I'm really glad I'm not tall! Since it is so hot down here, and really hot up in the Coffee Shop, Susie is going to close it up and work down here with us today. Sorry to those of you that were planning on eating up there. As hot as it is, you wouldn't've enjoyed it. Today is Mildred Whisenhunt's birthday, (our Assistant Food Service Manager), so be sure and wish her a Happy Birthday when you see her. She is like Novella's right hand over here. I don't know what we'd do without her. Dougo said on the radio today that she's 39 and holding so that's all we're going to say on that account. Levenia Cary sent out an email today informing everyone about the upcoming self-defense classes in the Field House for female students, faculty, staff and their teen daughters. These will be held on the 25th, 26th and 27th of April and could help save your life if you are ever unfortunate enough to get in a really bad situation. I decided last night that it was time to take our daddy Muskovy duck down the hill to where our lady ducks had relocated themselves, and if I had known what a show that was going to wind up being, I'd've sold tickets. Have you ever been beaten up by a duck? And Muscovy's don't quack so it was a pretty quiet fight. They hiss and hit with their wings a lot, and he flopped and splashed through his water pan, which with ducks, is dirty immediately after you put it out for them, so I probably looked like I'd been in a mud fight before it was all over with. Then we tried to put him in the cat carrier since I could tell he wasn't just going to let me carry him down the hill. That didn't work well either until we went to Plan B. We had started out trying to stuff him in the thing head first, but he'd stretch his big long neck out one way and his wings a couple of other directions and nothing would go through the opening. I finally managed to get him turned around backwards, pin his wings down to him and stuff him in tailfeathers first. We finally got him down to where the female ducks were and he stomped out of the carrier looking all indignant, fluffing his feathers and splashing like he was trying to wash all the evidence of my manhandling him away. The ladies didn't appear as interested in him as they did the feed we took down to them, but I figure that will change. For you folks that live in the Wilburton city limits, I noticed in the paper that the city will be having clean-up days Tues. and Wed. of next week, so if you have stuff you need hauled off, you need to get it to the curb before then and call city hall to get on their pick-up list. It's looking like a busy week here at Eastern next week, with the Battle of the Bands Monday evening, the self-defense classes offered on Tues., Wed. and Thurs., along with the Spring Musical, and various banquets and luncheons scheduled throughout the week. And don't forget about the Starving Artist event downtown today and tomorrow. They tell me it's getting to be the busy season around here and I believe it. I got to go to the Starving Artist Show on Saturday and see some really impressive art work. There were paintings, drawings, sculptures, stained glass and jewelry. It was really nice to get to go and visit with these creative people. When the time for this comes around again next year, you should really set aside some time to go. You will be amazed by the talented folks from this area. Our menu for today includes: Turkey Stuffing Mashed potatoes and gravy Yams Corn Green beans Baked potato bar Our fast food is Hamburgers and French Fries. And for dessert we have German Chocolate Cake and Peach Cobbler. Come on over, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... April 25 Message-ID: <444E3874.2080709@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Okay, we're back to fall all of a sudden. Don't you just love Oklahoma weather? It's really true what they say about if you don't like it just stick around a little while. I hope some of you are planning on attending the self-defense classes for female students, faculty, staff and their daughters. My daughter and I are planning on being in the second one today, so if I don't send out a menu tomorrow, please send flowers and get well cards in care of the Cafeteria. Chocolate always makes me feel better, too. I heard Dougo talking on the radio about pet owners and their habits of talking baby talk to their pets, sleeping with them and bragging about them. Hey if you can't enjoy all that stuff, why have a pet? Pets are more accepting than people are. You don't have to act cool or perfect or however you have to act or look around people to maintain your "image". If you love your pets and treat them well, they will love you back tenfold. They're really good to sleep with if you're cold-natured. They're just like little heating pads when they snuggle up next to you. They're like little vacuum cleaners for crumbs and other food that gets dropped. And having a pet has been shown to lower your stress level. Just being with them and petting them gives you a sense of calm and peace. Our menu for today includes: Chicken parmesan Mashed potatoes and gravy Peas Corn Carrots Pasta with marinara sauce Our fast food is: Enchiladas Spanish rice Refried beans And for dessert we have Banana Nut Cake with Peanut Butter Frosting. April 26 Message-ID: <444F8E2A.8040505@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, it's looking cool and cloudy out today. I guess that's so I won't be complaining about the heat, huh? I wish we could save a little bit of this for July when we'd really appreciate it. I just hope we don't get anymore of that bone jarring thunder like at 2:00 am night before last! Wow! It sounded like a bomb had hit! Well, as you can tell, I survived the self-defense class last night with all parts intact. Amanda is really good at teaching this to people, starting out with just basics like learning to be cautious, watch your surroundings and trust your instincts, (that little voice or alarm that you hear that tells you to be careful), and going on into learning how to break someone's hold on you, just by knowing the best way to move against certain holds, and how to use your body weight and positioning to make the most of your strength, (kinda like throwing your weight around). We need to thank her and her two large assistants, Jason? & Willie? and also Levenia Carey, our Campus Violence Prevention Project Director for providing this program. There will be a 4:00 to 6:00 pm class offered today and a 3:00 to 5:00 and a 7:00 to 9:00 class offered tomorrow in this for those of you who are interested. And those of you who are on the list for the Administrative Professional's Luncheon don't forget to be there at 11:30 for a really nice lunch, and I hear there will be entertainment! This will be my first one of these and I'm looking forward to it. I keep telling everyone I'm still new til I've gone through everything at least once, so I'll still get to claim "newness" at this. Our menu today in the Cafeteria is: Fried chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Okra Hot rolls Our fast food is Pizza. And for dessert you can make your own Banana Split with a variety of toppings. Yum yum! Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... April 27 Message-ID: <4450DF2D.5030302@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I really enjoyed my first secretary's luncheon yesterday. I knew the food was going to be good, because I had been seeing all the scurrying around and preparing things going on over here, but I really didn't realize we would have entertainment, too. The "B Flat's" were great, with some very imaginative lyrics to some old favorite songs, customized to some of our key employees. And the "Sound Sensations", as always are wonderful. I know one of the girls in the group, and the more I looked at another one, I realized I knew her too and had gone to her baby shower when she was born! I know I'm not old, how young are these kids today anyway? They just keep getting younger and younger! This luncheon is a very nice thing to do for all of us that don't run the show, but just try to keep it running smoothly. Thank you very much on behalf of all of us. Today will be your first chance to follow the yellow brick road and see "The Wizard of Oz", either at 10:00 or at 7:30 pm. This is something you don't want to miss. There will be another performance tomorrow evening and a final one on Saturday evening, also, so if you can't manage it today, you still have more chances to see this wonderful performance. I know those of you who will be at our PAWS meeting this evening won't get to see the play tonight. I wish we could have the "B Flat's" come and sing the Ali Oop Scoops Poop song for the group, but I know some of them will be out of town due to work obligations. Too bad they still have to keep their day jobs. Our menu for today includes: Roast beef Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Baby carrots Steamed broccoli Cheese sauce Hot rolls Our fast food is Chili Dogs and French Fries. And for dessert have a piece of Chocolate Cake or some Banana Pudding. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you have not attended one of the previous classes you still have 2 more chances today. This training is open to all current female students, faculty, staff and their teen daughters. Please don't let this opportunity pass you by. You will learn some basis defense techniques so dress comfortably (athletic or workout apparel recommended). The two remaining sessions are as follows: * Today at 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in Stipe Center (Field House) Room 201 above the pool. and * Today at 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in Stipe Center (Field House) Room 201 above the pool. And you know you're getting up way too early when even the birds think it's still nighttime! Talk about ironic, I went to our PAWS meeting, where we talk about spaying and neutering quite a bit, and came home to find I had 6 new baby kittens. Two little gray ones from a solid gray mother, and 2 gray and 2 yellow from a gray and yellow spotted mother. But that's okay. We love them. They're so cute and tiny! With both batches born on the same day, I'd say there was one busy tomcat around somewhere. I didn't even know we had a tomcat on the hill! He must be pretty sneaky as well as busy. And we have one little dog, Ginger, who's part dachsund, and part chihuahua, that is going crazy. She loves kittens! I swear if she ever gave birth, she would have kittens. She wouldn't know what to do with puppies, but she wants to mother every kitten she's ever seen! It's a good thing our mama cats were taken care of by her when they were little. They'll know what to expect: an automatic babysitter. What a deal! Lucy Kidd tells me that this is her last day to work here. She is quitting to go motorcycling around with her husband Billy the Kidd. The wind in your hair and the bugs in your teeth, can you beat it? I also want to thank my boss, Novella Ballew and her assistant, Mildred Whisenhunt, for the lovely flowers and gift they got me for secretary's day this week. They are great people to work for and with and I've enjoyed every minute of it so far, and am looking forward to many more years here. If I can equal Donna Hiatt's record of staying in this job for 25 years, that'll be doing something. Our menu for today includes: Meat loaf Mashed potatoes and gravy White rice Corn Peas Carrots Our fast food is Hot Ham and Cheese on a bun, with chips. And for dessert we have a luscious Frosted Chocolate Brownie. Have a great weekend and don't forget to go see the Wizard of Oz this evening or tomorrow evening at 7:30.
