Aug. 1st Message-ID: <44CF65F7.6060802@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we have now entered the extreme heat zone. That's something to look forward to, isn't it? I'm really hoping that after this week, things will cool down some. (I'm really hoping to win the lottery too, and I haven't even bought a ticket. What're the odds...?) Just remember to stay out of the heat as much as you possibly can. In the winter everyone clusters around the stove to keep warm; this time of year we cluster around the air conditioner. And definitely remember to keep water out and make some shade for your pets, or better yet, let them in the house where you can enjoy their company. And water your outside plants well. They can't stand much of this constant exposure to the extreme heat, and they can't get up and go get in the shade either! I neglected to mention yesterday that we were going to be serving meals in the East Cafeteria, but I assume you all found your way just fine. This is due to the fact that we're having the floor stripped and waxed in the West Cafeteria so it will be all shiny and nice looking for the beginning of the semester. It's amazing the difference those guys can make on it. It's not their favorite thing to do, what with having to move everything around and do multiple steps to get it to look good, but they do a really good job on it. For those of you that are interested, I believe our Storytelling Group will be meeting at the Gallery this evening at 7:00. It's always nice and cool in there with all the beautiful artwork to enjoy and lots of interesting people to get acquainted with. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Broccoli cuts Our fast food is Hot Ham and Cheese on a bun, with chips. And for dessert we've got Rice Krispie Treats. Come on over and keep cool with us. Rhoda 8-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We had our first Girl Scout Leader's Meeting yesterday evening for this school year, and much of the discussion was about getting ready for day camp later this month. We're planning an overnight program to teach the older girls about "Weather Wonders" and "Stargazing", and the younger ones about "Science Wonders" and "Space Exploration", so if any of you have any information or expertise you could share on any of these subjects, and you'd be willing to come to the program on Aug. 18 and 19 at the Veteran's Colony Hall south of town, please contact me or Patricia Rector. We want to have a really interesting, informative program for them. In Oklahoma, a.k.a. Tornado Alley, we really need to know as much as possible about our weather patterns, and what we should do to be as safe as possible in our extreme weather. They also told us a little about a new information system that is in effect in this area. 2-1-1. You can call this number on your phone to find out about non-profit agencies, governmental agencies, all sorts of physical and mental health services, day care, utility assistance, and various other topics. This will really be valuable to new people in the area, including some of our new students, I expect. The service covers 14 counties in Southeastern Oklahoma and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To call from your cell phone, dial (580) 332-0558. Our menu for today includes: Goulash Crispy cube potatoes Okra Cream style corn Hot rolls Our fast food is BBQ Beef on a Bun, Baked Beans and Chips. And for dessert, you can't beat Chocolate Cake! Aug. 3 Message-ID: <44D21018.6070808@eosc.edu> Hello out there, I hope none of you have had a meltdown yet. It's a definite possibility with the temperatures the way they've been. And Governor Henry has reinstated a state-wide burn ban so there can be no outdoor burning of leaves, trash, etc. I thought about burning some stuff the other night, but then I thought, as hot as it was I didn't want to add to it in any way. I figured the burning could wait. It's funny, though, as hot as it's been, I'm thinking everything is dying from the heat or just lying around miserable in it, but then yesterday evening as I got off the phone, I heard a noise outside the front door and looked out to see that one of our little hens had hatched out a baby chick! She's been sitting on some eggs in a box I originally put in place for the cats to get into for what seemed like so long I didn't think anything was going to hatch at all. I really thought she was just staying in that box to hide from all our roosters! I wouldn't blame her. I went outside last night after it "cooled off" to water my crispy plants and I guess I got the roosters stirred up. The one in the henhouse crowed, then one across the road started, then I could hear one way out back set in, then one right in the front yard started. Good grief! I didn't realize they were in so many different places. It probably wasn't too smart of them to announce themselves like that, since I had just seen the raccoon sneaking away from the dog food feeder that he'd knocked over to get to the food. They say raccoons are very smart, but this one seems like he would rather knock the dog food feeder over and eat than figure out how to reach in the little swinging door. Oh well, to each his own, I guess. At least I guess if he can figure out some way of getting all the dog food he wants, maybe he'll leave the chickens alone! Our menu today includes: Pork loin Mashed potatoes and gravy Blackeye peas Corn Sauerkraut Hot rolls Our fast food is a Deli Selection and Chips. And for dessert Drexel has fixed a yummy Strawberry Cake. Come on over and cool off with us, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I can see my little flag under my vent blowing, though, so maybe it'll cool off in here for me shortly. It seemed like everything was "out of whack" over here Friday. The AC was off, the veggie cooler had to be worked on, as it wasn't cooling like it should, there was a puddle of water in the Coffee Shop and one in the hallway to the side door here. It was just one thing after the other. Thankfully, the guys came and worked on everything that needed it, and today everything appears to be back on track. We had chickens squawking in the yard again last night, but by the time I was able to waddle out to see what was going on, the mystery critter was gone, and chickens were running in several directions. I did manage to catch one little hen and put her in the hen house without too much fuss, but the rest of them were on their own. As I was leaving for work this morning, I looked over toward the automatic dog food feeder, and saw a raccoon look up and see me looking at him and go waddling off. (Mystery solved.) When he was gone, however, I could see that he had brought a friend with him this time. There was another, smaller raccoon still sitting there wishing I would go ahead and get gone so they could finish their snack. At least it didn't look like they had to knock the whole thing over this time to get anything out of it. Maybe the smaller raccoon is the brains of the bunch. Unfortunately, I found our outside dog, Cocoa, dead in the back yard this weekend, so it looks like the raccoons may have free rein until we can find a suitable replacement. Whatever she died of, it was pretty sudden as she had seemed fine just the day before. I suppose it could've been from the heat, but with us functioning on just a little window unit in the bedroom, she wouldn't have been much better off in the house, and I always keep at least 2 big tubs of water filled up outside for all our critters. At least she won't have to suffer through the rest of this heat wave. We're just not having a good year where our animals are concerned, the furred ones or the feathered ones. Our menu for today includes: Chicken fry steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Sweet peas Our fast food is Enchiladas, Spanish Rice, Refried Beans, and chips. The temperature tells me this summer's not going down without a fight, though. Last Friday, after the storm knocked our AC out on Thurs. evening, it was so hot in here, the little floating globes in my Galileo thermometer had all passed out from the heat and sunk to the bottom of the thermometer. It looks like one of them is finally back floating again. I went outside last night to look around a little, and when I shined my flashlight over toward the automatic dog food feeder, I could see a big raccoon sitting up and looking at me, then on a little closer look, I could see 2 and sometimes 3 smaller sets of shiny eyes aimed my direction. They didn't get startled and run off immediately, though. They seemed to be keeping an eye on me and what I might be doing, while sneaking handfuls of food out quietly to eat. I would've had a better look at them but there was an obstruction or two in the way slightly, so I'm planning on rearranging a few things tonight in order to get a better view. I'm just glad they're content with raiding the dog food feeder and are leaving the chickens alone. We'll get along fine if they'll just hold to that. Aug. 8 Message-ID: <44D9F5B1.3040507@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, technology is great...when it works. Unfortunately, we're having printer problems over here. Novella and I both got Epson Stylus C86 printers last year and hers has already konked out. We just changed the ink, so we know it's full, but it does nothing but print out blank pages. We questioned Keith Lewis about this, and he brought over some stuff that he had copied off the internet that was just pages and pages of people with the same problem. Evidently these printers are timed to die right after the warranty expires. A few people have been successful in repairing their sickly machines, but most just give up. (I may get up my nerve and try it, so if you see me walking around looking like an explosion in an ink factory just don't get near enough to get any of it on you.) Some people have been "fortunate enough?" to have this happen right before the warranty expired, and the company replaced their printers, but of course, the new model doesn't use the same expensive ink cartridges that the broken down one did, so they were stuck with that expense. So far, mine is still working, but I feel like I'm just living on borrowed time printer-wise over here. Novella is going into withdrawal, not being able to print recipes off the internet. Wish us luck with this dilemma, and if you have a printer that works really well, and you'd like to recommend that brand, feel free. We need all the knowledge we can get, evidently. Maybe knowing about this situation will help someone to avoid getting stuck in this situation in the future. Our raccoons were back last night. I went out before dark to put out a pan of water and pull a weed or two so I could get a better view of them when they came to the dog food feeder to forage, when I heard some kind of "critter noises" coming from behind the big oak tree. I went around there to look and saw a raccoon run under the shed. Our little Yorkie and our little weiner/chihuahua were with me and were sniffing around. I could hear some growly sounds coming from under the shed, so I knew that probably the mother had gone under there, but I couldn't figure out why she wasn't being quiet. Then I looked up in the fork of the oak and saw two half grown babies clinging to the tree, and looking down at me like they didn't know whether they should be going on up or trying to come down and get with mama. I went into the house to get my camera, and of course the minute my back was turned, I'm sure they ran for mama and took off for less populated areas. I left some cookies out for them later, so if the cats didn't eat them all, they probably enjoyed those. (Go Diggers!) Now the catastrophes can begin! Our first catastrophe yesterday was the fact that my daughter did not have a purse to start school with, and since she's in Jr. Hi, she's at that age when they have to carry all manner of makeup, etc. wherever they go. And it was not just that she didn't have a purse, she didn't have the perfect purse that she'd spotted in a downtown window for $$$, (more than I'd ever pay for a purse for myself). I couldn't look at it and tell you why it was so perfect, but evidently she saw something wonderful there. All I saw was that it had a snakey looking handle, silver studs, and was made of camouflage fabric, (the pattern known for blending in, you know?), which almost guarantees that she won't be able to find it, much like most of the rest of her things. The next and most basic catastrophe was that we couldn't find her new school sneakers, and they're not even camouflage. (See why I figure the purse will be lost next?) I was convinced the shoes had run away from home, with or without her feet in them. I finally found them for her where the box had flipped upside down and fallen behind something and she swore that she owed me big time, and loved me so much! We'll see what good it does me. Wish us both luck surviving 8th grade. I know it was no picnic, but if last year is any example, I think Jr. Hi was easier on me when I went through it myself. Don't forget to make plans to go to the Bikes and Bands downtown Saturday night. The Magic Wheels motorcycle group will be having their parade of lights about dark Saturday evening, and then the bands will get to start playing down by City Hall. Our own head of maintenance, Rudy O'Donley and his group Sundown will be playing, as will Oversoul and EOSC grad Kyle Williams. Check it out. It's the first day of fall classes and I hope everyone has a very happy and successful year on their way to a brighter future. I've seen several familiar faces that have come back from last semester, and met several new people that I hope will be around with us for a while. I even met one fellow that was a mixture of both. I could tell he looked like a fellow we had last semester, but he was new. Turns out he was the younger brother. We've started a drawing for a really nice bicycle and helmet, that was donated by Dr. Pepper, here in the Cafeteria. It is open to any currently enrolled Eastern student. Please, only enter once, and your enrollment status will be verified before the prize is awarded. We have the entry box and forms here in the Cafeteria, so come and see us and fill one out. You might just be the winner! The drawing will be held on Aug. 30 at 1:15 after serving for lunch ends. We'd like to thank Student Services for the great T-shirts they gave us yesterday, too. They bear the slogan, "It's not who you are, it's who you will become." That's really what college is all about, preparing the students for a better future. If you'll notice, we're trying out a few new recipes here in the Cafeteria, so come on over and try something you haven't had before. Our menu for today includes: Barbecue onion meatloaf (new) Mashed potatoes and gravy Garlic linguini Pasta bar Corn Garden blend wild rice Zucchini and tomatoes Sandwich bar Taco stew (new) And for dessert we have Cookie Bars. Cafeteria serving hours: Breakfast 6:45 - 8:45 Lunch 11:00 - 1:15 Dinner 4:30 - 6:15 Cash meals are $4.50 each, however punch cards are available in the Business Office, and I believe the price per meal is somewhat less with these. If you are a student with a scheduling conflict, where your classes run right through lunchtime, you can come and clear it Novella Ballew, the Cafeteria Manager, so that you can come and scan your card in the Cafeteria and get a note to take upstairs to Susie, so you can get lunch in the Coffee Shop when your schedule permits. This has to be cleared through Novella, though, so be sure and stop in and talk to her about it first. She will be glad to meet you. Coffee Shop hours are: Mon. - Fri. 7:45 - 3:20 with the grill closing at 2:30 Mon. - Thurs. On Fri. the grill will close at 1:30. In case you don't know where it is, the Coffee Shop is upstairs in the Student Union building, (same building as the Cafeteria). It is behind the big bank of windows you see in the front of the building at the top. Susie has a variety of fast food items, burgers, fries, sandwiches, etc. and a variety of coffees and cappuccinos with several different flavors of creamers and syrups to give your caffeine fix just the right flavor. Our menu for today in the Cafeteria includes: Fried chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Pinto beans Cornbread Turnip greens Pasta bar Hot rolls Our fast food today is PIZZA so hurry on in and get a slice. And for dessert we have luscious cobbler. Throw some ice cream on top and dig in! Now I know why they put the one on the car shade devices, (you know, those things you stick inside your windshield over your dash to keep so much sun out so your car doesn't explode from the heat). The warning says something like "Vehicle must not be operated with this device in place." When I get off work and go to get in my car, it is so hot in there that after I roll the windows down to let the super-heated air out, and turn the AC on and UP, I can hardly bring myself to remove the shade contraption because I don't want the sun shining in there and making it even hotter. I've been giving serious thought to planting a shade tree on top of my car! I had an email recently that gave different ways that you know you're in Oklahoma in the summertime, including that the best parking spot is not the closest, but the one in the shade, that you learn that you can steer your car with only two fingers, that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron, and hot water comes out of both taps. Sad but true! Be sure and wish Ali Martinez a very Happy Birthday today! She's another year better today. Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak Steamed red potatoes Rice Green beans Baby carrots Winter blend vegetables Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is a Deli selection with chips. We're having a sleepover at the Veteran's Center and part of the program will be teaching the girls how to use telescopes, and showing them the wonders of the night sky. Mr. Maurice Hawthorne has graciously agreed to help with this program. I think it will prove to be both memorable and educational for the girls and their leaders. (The only part I'm not looking forward to is the sleeping on the floor part. I dread to find out what I'll feel like by in the morning.) Congratulations go out to John and Shirley Calhoun, who just became proud grandparents again. Their daughter Cari and her husband, Jeremy Alexander, are the proud parents of a baby girl, Abby Lynn. And since she was born on Aug. 16, the anniversary of Elvis' death, John should be able to remember it. Mr. Hawthorne came early and stayed late, giving the girls and leaders an opportunity to view not only the night sky, but sunspots as well. Our new faculty member, Roger Nelson, also came with telescope in hand, as did Don Stites from Robber's Cave State Park, who brought a really big telescope (it looks like a hot water heater!), so we had several different sizes of scopes to view through. Don also pointed out the space station as it traveled over our heads. We just happened to be out there at the right time to see it as it passed directly over us! The only drawback was that we did have a great deal of cloud cover, which impeded our visibility somewhat. I think all of us did get to see Jupiter and several of it's moons, though, which was a unique experience. Jupiter is visible with the naked eye, but the moons are not, so it was surprising to see them there through the telescope. The rain we got yesterday evening was a welcome relief, after these 100+ degree days we've been having. Here's hoping that the temperatures will stay below the 3 digit mark the rest of this week, and for my part, the rest of the year! Missed the party, missed the cake, missed everything. Darn it! That's the story of my life. And today, they tell me Donna Rice is having a birthday, also, so that office is really the party place, I guess, with both ladies having birthdays one after the other! Anyway, I hope they both have a great time. I told Cheryl she should enjoy her seniority while she can, I'll be catching up to her in about 3 months. I don't think she wanted to be reminded that she was winning that particular race, by even a little bit. I guess I kind of have the attitude of that crotchety, old cartoon lady, Maxine: Any day you're alive is a good day! And I've always heard, too, that people who have the most birthdays live the longest! I'm all for that! Our menu for today includes: Beef hash Pinto beans Cornbread Corn on the cob Florentine vegetables Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is, everybody's favorite, PIZZA! And for dessert have a piece of Boston Cream Pie. Have a great day, Rhoda 8-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Following hot on the heels of Cheryl Hassell and Donna Rice celebrating birthdays, my husband and I are celebrating our 15th anniversary today. I remember back to when we got married and think how it's a wonder I even made it out of the church. He's from Buffalo Valley and they have a strange tradition down there of taking newlyweds and throwing them in Sardis Lake! (I don't know if that's just his family and/or friends that do that, or everybody.) I knew I couldn't swim, but I wasn't sure they realized just how terrified I got at just the thought of getting thrown in the water, so I was pretty well prepared to just stay in the dressing room at the church until they gave up and went away, even if it meant missing the honeymoon! Fortunately, they finally decided that maybe they only needed to throw Gary in the lake. That's okay, he's a good swimmer. I still think if they had thrown me in and I had survived, I'd've hunted them all down and...well, we just won't go there. Our menu for today includes: Turkey with stuffing Mashed potatoes and gravy Candied sweet potatoes Winter blend vegetables Rice Green beans Pasta bar Our fast food line is serving Hot Beef and Cheddar on a bun with chips. And for dessert try a piece of Fruit Cocktail Cake. Have a great day, Rhoda 8-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Choctaw Community Center the Annual Eastern Oklahoma State College Alumni Fish Fry will be held. There will be good food and friends aplenty. Our Cafeteria crew is working on some of the "fixin's", (that's Okie talk for side dishes), so it's guaranteed to be good. And for tomorrow, there's the Arkoma Community Driving Awareness Day event scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the EOSC Agriculture Complex. There will be safety demonstrations, a NASCAR driving simulator, jaws of life demonstration, and several other interesting and educational exhibits to enjoy. This event is held to promote safer driving habits and to call attention to the most common mistakes drivers make so that they will be aware of them and avoid them in the future. It could save your life or the lives of your loved ones, so be sure and attend. After that you can swing by the Hartshorne Public Library between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. for an appearance by the Midnight Riters, a group of ladies that have written a book together. They sound like a feisty and interesting group. It should be a fun gathering. Our menu for today includes: Steak fingers Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli with cheese sauce Okra Rice Corn Baked potato bar Rolls It's PIZZA day on the fast food line. And for dessert, try some Bread Pudding. I've always heard of this but never had any, so I'll get to try something new today. My daughter and I got to spend some time at the event put on my BP and various others and it was very worthwhile. If we're fortunate, maybe this can become a yearly event. There were several displays that should really make our young people think of the consequences of drinking and driving. It's sad when so many of them think that's what being grown up is all about, being able to get drunk, or just do whatever you want without realizing what lifelong consequences their actions could have. My bad. I neglected to mention several birthdays Friday, and I have to apologize. I guess I was too wrapped up in my own little world, what with my husband and I celebrating our anniversary, and his birthday coming right on it's heels. (I think that's how he can remember our anniversary so well.) Our plumber here on campus, Big Allen Kendrick, had a birthday on Friday, and I hope it was a happy one. Also, one of our newer EOSC employees, Shirley Calhoun had a birthday yesterday. (She's my husband's birthday twin. I wonder how much she'll pay me not to tell her age?) And last but not least, (well, maybe she is the smallest, but she counts for two now), Carli Lay had a birthday yesterday, and Carli, I hope you celebrated for two, but only with doctor approved beverages, etc. Also, the time is running out to register to win our Dr. Pepper bike and helmet here in the Cafeteria. The drawing is this Wed. at 1:15, so if you're a currently enrolled Eastern student and you haven't entered the drawing yet, better get on it! Our menu for today includes: Chicken fajitas Spanish rice Refried beans Pasta bar Rice Our fast food is a deli variety. And for dessert have some Fresh Apple Cobbler. Aug. 29 Message-ID: <44F4554A.3080102@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Isn't this weather wonderful? It's just what the doctor ordered! We've even gotten some much-needed rain. I hope it was in time to save some of my neglected plants. It looks like it has begun to refill the little beaver pond down the hill, which had gotten really low, stagnant and nasty, so much so that I don't even think the beavers had been getting out in it lately. Our ducks that were down there didn't make it through the summer. The daddy duck disappeared quite a while back, and the little female got on the road and got run over later. It seems kind of barren down there without the ducks, and with the beavers staying hidden. Maybe this cooler weather and a little rain will bring life back to it. Today is the one year anniversary of the devastation that was Hurricane Katrina. I've never been to New Orleans, and am not that familiar with it, but Saturday at the Midnite Riters book signing, they had the room decorated in a French Quarter New Orleans theme, and it really made you appreciate the uniqueness of the place. Now I can begin to understand why the people would want to reclaim it from the sea, as impossible as that sounds. (Remember, only one entry per student, please.) We will be drawing out the winning name at 1:15, right after we finish serving lunch. We will then verify the enrollment status of the winner with the Dean of Students, and contact that person. We would like to get a picture taken of the winner with their prize as soon as possible to put in the next issue of the Statesman and the local papers. Here's another chance to voice your opinion without even having to register to vote. One of our ladies brought in a newspaper today that had an article about the Oklahoma state quarter that is scheduled to be issued in May 2008. The people of Oklahoma are being asked to vote for their favorite of the 10 designs being considered by going online at www.gov.ok.gov/coin.php. You can vote for your favorite until September 20. Governor Brad Henry then has to submit up to five designs to the U. S. Mint by Sept. 29. (The article does state that the U. S. Mint may use one of the suggestions from the Governor or it may come up with one of it's own.) Some of the images contained in the designs are the outline of the state of Oklahoma, the Pioneer Woman statue in Ponca City, an oil derrick, 46 stars (symbolizing our ranking as the 46th state), and the Scissortail Flycatcher (our state bird), among others. I certainly hope it stays nice for the Labor Day Weekend and all the festivities at the Choctaw Labor Day Festival at Tuskahoma. That's something that my family always has to go to without fail. I'm going to try to go tomorrow night and see Charley Pride for my mom. She's 89 and he's always been one of her favorite singers. I told her I'd try to bring her a souvenir, since she can't go. She can still do okay getting around under normal circumstances, but going down there would just be too much walking. I've been meaning to mention, there has been a set of keys lost on campus with a Jeep keychain on them. If they are found, please turn them in to Student Services or let us know in the Cafeteria. We have a young fellow here who really doesn't want to have to replace his whole ignition if he doesn't have to.
