Dec. 1 Message-ID: <45704C26.5020801@eosc.edu> TGIF! According to the thermometer it's 20 degrees outside, and I can guarantee you it was very slick going home yesterday evening. I thought the little "no traction" symbol that lights up on my dash when things get slippery would burn out before I got home. You really have to go slow so you don't have to hit the brakes, because that's when you'll get to see places you never meant to up close and personal, like the ditch on the other side of the road, or the emergency room, or maybe even what the world looks like upside down dangling from your seatbelt. Even though there are no classes today and the faculty gets to stay home, and the kids get a free day to sleep in or play in the snow or whatever, the Cafeteria crew was here dark and early as usual. The show must go on, and folks must be fed. Not surprisingly, the breakfast numbers were way down. (We'd've all slept in too if we could have.) As near as I can tell at this point, even the Regent's meeting is still on for today. I don't know where they all have to come in from, but I hope it's not as bad as it sounds like on the TV weather reports. I'm assuming that Candlelighting is still on for this Sunday. I haven't heard anything to the contrary, anway. We actually had to cancel our PAWS meeting last night. I think that's a first. We're a pretty determined little group, all in all, but there's no need to risk life and limb when we could just pick a better day and all live to tell about it. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Hot rolls Our fast food is Hot Ham and Cheese on a bun with chips. And for dessert have a piece of Yellow Cake with Chocolate Frosting. Slide on over and eat with us, Rhoda ;-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Evidently there's a lot of it left further north, though, since I'm still seeing a lot of school cancellations on TV. The temperature is still really low so be sure and take care of your pets that have to be out in it. Small dogs need to be in the house. They do not have the body mass to withstand these extremely cold temperatures. I believe I got something in the mail the other day about a blood drive in Miller Hall today. It is especially critical to keep the supply of blood up at this time when we have had such bad weather that causes accidents and injuries. You can be a hero and save a life just by this simple act. Everyone over here is busy getting ready for the Regent's Christmas Dinner this evening. It was postponed from Friday due to the extremely bad weather throughout the state. It looks like I'll be getting to stay and cashier this evening at dinner while Irene goes up to the President's House to help serve. That should surprise the people that saw me out serving breakfast too. Our menu for today includes: Steak fingers Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Hot rolls Our fast food is Meat and Cheese Nachos. And for dessert we have some yummy Orange Cake. Thankfully, that doesn't happen to me too often, but some of the other Cafeteria ladies, have to do that sort of thing quite a few times during the course of the year. I drove in to work at 6:00 a.m. by the light of the full moon and left again at 6:30 p.m. by the light of the same full moon. Missed daylight altogether. It's really like a different place being on campus at night. There's much more activity going on. When I come in early in the mornings, almost everyone is still asleep, there's nothing going on, and plenty of parking spaces are available (usually). Last night there were people all over, it looked like there was a team coming in to play ball, and a lot of traffic. It sounds like the Regent's dinner went well, in spite of quite a few of them not being able to attend. And I guess that was the first time I ever cashiered for dinner. I usually cashier at breakfast a couple of days a week, and on rare occasions, at lunch, so I got to see people I hardly ever see, since a lot of people don't wake up early and come in for breakfast. Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Broccoli and cheese Baked potato bar Our fast food is Enchiladas, Refried Beans, and Spanish Rice. It is also time to turn in admission applications, scholarship applications, and possibly housing. All these forms need to be completed and turned in by February 1 for first priority on scholarship moneys. When submitting your admission application be sure to complete the form in its entirety, include the application fee, an official transcript (which includes the fall 2006 semester), and your class schedule for the spring 2007. Read your scholarship forms carefully and be sure to included everything that is asked. Finally, if you know for sure you want to live in campus housing, be sure to submit it as well. It will offer you a better chance to secure the dorm or apartment you want on campus. If you need any assistance regarding transfer, please come by my office in the Library Building Room 110. I can give you these important forms and answer most of your questions regarding transfer. Hope you have a safe and Happy Holidays. This is the week when all the students will get to find out how much they've learned and the faculty will get to find out how well they've gotten through to them. I wish them all the best. (I'm just glad I don't have a test to take.) My husband and I had an enjoyable time at the employee Christmas dinner the other night. I got to meet some new people and see some old friends that I hadn't seen in a while. As always, the food was very good. And the "spare no expense" entertainment was enjoyable also. I realized I must never have heard Paul Enis sing before, (it's usually just his students that you hear at programs and such), but now I know why he went into music. He has a really outstanding voice, and did a fine job of leading us in a variety of Christmas carols. He even managed to make us amateurs sound pretty good. I had heard something that sounded like a very good piece of news for Eastern at a recent meeting with the architects that are planning the new building, and in scanning through the latest e-newsletter, I found out where the credit goes for this achievement. In the meeting it was stated that after many years of occupying the land on which our college sits, Eastern had finally acquired ownership of it. In the e-newsletter, it stated that this was due to the efforts of Vice President Linda Sadler. That is an accomplishment surely worthy of getting her name in Coach Wooldridge's upcoming book on the history of Eastern. And if that book is already finalized, then it sounds like we've got a good start on book two. Especially after we get the new building underway. (We'll really miss Bill here in the Cafeteria, as he's pretty much in here daily and is really a sweet guy.) This whole group will be missed and take with them many, many years of experience and all our best wishes. Newsflash: The Bookstore is going to the dogs! And that's a good thing! If you haven't read the memo yet, Ali Martinez, the current Nursing Department secretary, will be the new Bookstore Manager, replacing Judy Betts when she finally gets to retire, and if you know Ali, or have seen the decor in her office, I'd bet there will soon be boo-koos of cuddly, cute dog pictures popping up in the Bookstore! Every time I get an email with some cute whimsical critter picture in it, especially if it's a dog, I have to send it to Ali for her wall. The Nursing Department's loss will be everyone else's gain. (They did get a big grant though, so maybe that will take some of the sting out of losing Ali.) I look forward to getting to see her more often since she'll be so much closer now. She's a pleasure to be around and will fit right in with the Bookstore crew. Congratulations and good luck, Ali, on the new adventure that awaits you! At least I got almost all the stuff I needed to get done for the people I work with, with the exception of a few Christmas cards, this year. Last year I was horrible and got nothing done! I have a tin I keep Christmas cards, pens, stickers, etc. in along with lists of Christmas cards I've sent to people in years past. I opened it up yesterday evening and didn't even find a list for 2005. Evidently nobody got a card last year. At least I can feel like I'm doing some better this year on that part anyway. Everybody I've talked to says they can't believe it's Christmas already. Of course, that's grown ups. Kids think it takes forever for Christmas to get here. I think that may be because of the fact that time really does fly when you get older, and it really is Christmas before we know it when we've got a few years behind us. (That's why I'm never ready! I think that was one of those "Oprah Aha moments"!) I hope all the finals are going well. I hate to gloat, but I'm especially glad that I'm not having to take any, or grade any! I saw kids in for breakfast this morning that never bother to get up and come in for breakfast. I guess they figured they'd better jump start their brains with a good breakfast and some caffeine to help make it through one more day of finals. Congratulations to the Nursing Department on the huge grant they received! That will go a long way toward accomplishing the goals of that department. If you've ever looked at the vacancies in the paper, there is always a call for nurses somewhere. I looked at it frequently before I started working here, and it seemed like about 80% of the job openings advertised were for nurses. And you know if you've ever been in the hospital, you'll see and be taken care of far more by the nurses than you will by the doctor who's getting the really big bucks. They are really special people to devote their lives to the care of others. It's an honor that so many of them can begin that lifelong calling right here at Eastern. It seems like winter struck and ran away a couple of weeks ago, and now we've gone back into spring-like weather. I'm not complaining, mind you. I enjoy nice weather, whenever we can get it. It seems like so often, it's way too hot here anymore, and then it dips into way too cold suddenly and without notice. That's Oklahoma weather, I guess. Gotta love it! I'd better mention too, that the Coffee Shop is closed today. Susie is down here helping us prepare for the reception at the White House. Be sure and attend that sometime between 11:30 and 1:30. The food is going to be wonderful. I've been drooling all morning and I haven't even got to nibble anything! Talk about torture! Speaking of the winter weather we had, I haven't seen the little gray and white cat that I used to see hanging around since all that ice and snow hit. It would make me feel much better if someone could tell me they took the little sweetie with them and gave her a good home. I hate to see homeless animals, but so many of them, especially cats, are so afraid of people due to mean people running them off and making them so distrustful of people that they are impossible to get close to, and so can't be adopted. I will be back next Mon. and Tues. to work as I know several of you will, but for those of you that won't, I wish you a Blessed Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Be safe in your celebrating, and driving on the highways with all the holiday traffic that's sure to be on the roads. I don't want to hear any bad reports of tragic accidents on any of you! You still have a week to pull it out if you're in doubt. The Coffee Shop will be closed this week, just in case you're wondering. Susie will be working down here some, and spending some time with her kids getting ready for Christmas. (Wonder which list she's on?) I'd like to welcome Johnny Sivic to our Eastern Family. My checkbook however will probably be getting a workout! It's going to be nice to be off and not have to follow someone else's schedule for a while. I have to make a to-do list or I'll wind up thinking I have all the time in the world to get things done in, and then at the last minute discover that all that time is gone and I have to really scramble to get anything productive done. It might be a good New Year's Resolution to set a goal for each day of something that I want to get done that day. Hmmmm...I'll have to consider that. Much sympathy goes out to Rhonda (Price) Quinn and family. She just lost her husband, Tony, to cancer. Please keep her and her family in your prayers. After being outside night before last in a T-shirt, and then all day yesterday just being able to wear a T-shirt, rather than the usual long sleeved shirt and or jacket you'd think of for this time of year, it finally began to cool off yesterday evening. By this morning, it was actually misting as I drove to work. Have you listened to the weather reports and heard that they're giving us a 20% chance of a white Christmas? That just brings up images of a crackling fire, a beautiful Christmas tree, warm sweaters, hot chocolate...I can even smell the scent of pine boughs. Okay, Santa, I'm ready now. I hope you all have a wonderful and safe Christmas and New Year and come back safely next year. And don't forget the real reason for the season. God bless you all.
