July 5 Message-ID: <44ABD16A.3030103@eosc.edu> Hi everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and lived to tell about it. I'm sure a lot of people and animals too, will be glad when all the fireworks are finally popped and peace and quiet is restored. After seeing my daughter's stash of artillery, I don't know exactly when that will happen around our house, but maybe our little Yorkie will come out of hiding when it does. We went to the fireworks display at Robber's Cave last night and as always the Wilburton Fire Dept. did a wonderful job on it. We had a PAWS adoption day Saturday morning, and my daughter and I went thinking we were going to be mostly helping adopt out puppies and dogs, and instead the big thing that happened was we adopted in a hamster. He came with his own cage, so we didn't have to worry about what to put him in, but we didn't know much about them so we had to go by the library and get a book on hamsters to learn what we could about them. We found out that they eat a variety of things, such as fruits, vegetables and even some meat. My husband says we aren't going to give him any meat though, that the bites he gets of our fingers should be sufficient. Maybe he will eventually learn that our fingers supply the food but are not meant to be the food. We hope. Any personal expertise that anyone could share would be most welcome. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Whole potatoes Green beans Corn on the Cob Our fast food is Frito Pies. And for dessert we have Strawberry Cake. July 6 Message-ID: <44AD26BC.7020604@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, I read the memo this morning about the dress code that is to take effect Aug. 1. Time to lose the comfortable clothes, I guess. When I think about myself getting dressed up, it reminds me of the saying, "trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear." I never feel like I look like I should, or like I want to when I get dressed up, so I just go for comfort, and at least I feel better. If anyone knows where to find nice comfortable clothes (that won't give me a coronary from their price tag) for much-less-than-fashion-model looking women, please let me know...soon! Otherwise I may wind up wearing hand-me-down Cafeteria uniforms, since 97% of my wardrobe just got declared illegal. And I had just gotten some new capris for the heat of summer. Darn it! Somebody up there doesn't like me! We're really getting ready for the new building over here, since when we came in this morning, Susie discovered that several ceiling tiles had fallen out in the East Cafeteria. (She swears up and down that she had nothing to do with them falling out.) We left a message with Sheryl and a couple of the guys are overe here already trying to put them back in place. I'll be glad when we don't have to worry about old systems and trying to get everything to hold together just a little longer. Our menu for today includes: Beef tips White rice Green peas with pearl onions Corn Our fast food is Enchiladas, Spanish Rice and Refried Beans. And for dessert have some Chocolate Delight! I'll definitely be having some of that! Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... July 10 Message-ID: <44B26D59.3060204@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, I hope you all enjoyed the warm weekend we just had. I had to laugh when my daughter came running in the house the other night saying, "Mom! Mom! There's a possum in the yard. I'm keeping it! It's going to be my pet!" Of course that didn't happen. After adopting the new hamster just a couple of weeks ago, I don't believe we need another pet to tend to. It was getting a drink at our water tub that I keep out for our herd of critters to use. (Some of them drink out of it, and some of them swim in it.) I told her to go get the cat carrier and we'd load it up and take it to the park where it would be safe (and so would our chickens and eggs! As a matter of fact, the next day, a little hen hatched out 2 babies in our henhouse and since possums love to snack on chickens, it was pretty good timing to take this one elsewhere! ) Evidently I was a little late on keeping the possum safe, though. When we relocate one, I usually pick it up by the tail, (with gloves on), and put it into our cat carrier for the trip to Robber's Cave. This one surprised me though...no tail! Something had already gotten hold of it, and all they got was a possum tail for their trouble. We managed to get it into the carrier with a little nudge from a shovel and some help from Nancy Tackett's son, Davidson, that's a buddy of Destiny's and lives nearby and took off for the park. We were trying to find a deserted spot to let the possum go, but there kept being a car driving into everyplace we were going to go. We finally found a spot across the road from where the car was, pulled over and got out to unload the carrier, and here came the car. Turns out it was park employee asking if we were going to be fishing. I sheepishly told him that we were just relocating a possum. He laughed and said he just wanted to warn us to watch for copperheads, that there had been several reports of them being out that night. He even loaned us his flashlight for our relocation process since my daughter had touched mine and it died. So if you're out at the park and see a no-tailed possum running around, I bet I know where it came from! Our menu for today includes (no possum): Goulash Scalloped potatoes Green beans Winter blend vegetables Corn bread Rolls Our fast food is Hot Ham and Cheese and chips. And for dessert have a piece of summertime: Peach Cobbler Come and get it! Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... According to the reports, it is supposed to be hovering up around the mid to high 90's or so, and will feel even hotter than that. (I liked the '90's better as a decade than a temperature. A lot of my best, most meaningful stuff happened in the '90's. Gary and I got married in '91, and my daughter, Destiny was born in '93.) I was outside doing some yard work yesterday evening since it was a bit cloudy and not as hot as it had been, and we let our house dogs out for a while. Two of them must've stayed on the beaten path, but our little Yorkie, Valentina, got out somewhere and gathered up every tick on the 10 acres! She was absolutely crawling with them. The big brown ones were easy to spot and not too hard to pick off since they hadn't latched on yet, but while I was doing that I noticed that what appeared to be dirt on her was actually scads of seed ticks crawling all over her, and now crawling all over my legs. I had to put her in the bathtub for several minutes and get her thoroughly wet, then add tick and flea shampoo and let that soak in, and run over to a friend's house to get an emergency dose of the between-the-shoulder-blades medicine that kills ticks. Thank God for her sharing her medicine with me! Our little Valentina would've been drained dry! She looks a lot better this morning, still has some small ticks on her, but that medicine should do the trick on them. Be sure and watch out for your pets when you let them out, even if you spray your yard or put down granules. I think those doggone ticks are getting immune to everything we can throw at them! And from what I hear, the copperheads are bad this year too, so you really want to be extra cautious when you're outside and keep your eyes open for these unwelcome and dangerous guests. For those of you who might be interested, don't forget our Storytelling Group meets at the Gallery this evening at 7:00. Everyone is welcome to come and tell stories or just listen. (It's a beautiful, cool place and there are no ticks or snakes allowed!) Have any of you noticed all the new planters, light fixtures and the nice new sidewalk going in downtown? It's really starting to look special down there. I love the variety of plants they have put in. The crape myrtles being a shrub will be there all year providing structure, the evergreens will be green even in the winter so the planters won't look dead and a variety of annuals can be changed out as needed and provide seasonal color. Some of the planters even have ornamental grasses and more of our native plants that won't require too much care or extra water. I'm glad to see Wilburton making these improvements. It gives our main street much more personality. It looks like every day is going to be at least 100, and the temperature won't dip below the mid 70's at night. Be sure and be safe if you have to go out in the extreme heat. Drink plenty of fluids, (not alcoholic ones), wear cool clothing and a wide brimmed hat to create your own shade, and don't forget the sunblock. Better still, just take a siesta during the middle of the day, and rest up to do what you've got to do outside either early or late. It may still not be cool, but at least it won't be dangerously hot. We got tires and a battery for our 4 wheeler this weekend and my daughter was riding it when she noticed water running across the ground right next to our front yard. She came and told me and I traced it back to the source, all the way back to our water meter. It was standing full of water and water was just gurgling out of it. At least it wasn't a break in our part of the line this time. We had that experience several months ago, and I know my husband didn't want to hear that again. It looked like the metal had actually cracked all the way across on the bottom side right under the gauge. I know I've heard people talking about how the dry conditions we've been having are causing home foundations to crack, etc. I guess it's possible that it caused this too, as the meter wasn't that old. Our menu for today includes: Chicken fried steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Sweet peas and onions Corn Baked potato bar Our fast food is Polish Sausage on a bun, along with Baked Beans and Chips. July 18 Message-ID: <44BCFBFE.7060601@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we're in a seemingly unending string of over 100 degree days. I'm so thankful for what little air conditioning we've got working at the house. That's the only thing that makes life bearable in this heat. Be sure and keep your outside plants watered and keep extra water out for your pets and other critters that will surely be needing a drink during this heat wave, and follow the heat safety instructions that Mark Hill forwarded to everyone. I really feel sorry for all the animals and birds that have to be out in the heat. I just have to hope that they're better equipped to handle it than I am! They can do some pretty amazing things in order to survive. The other day when I rode our 4 wheeler down through our woods with the loppers to clear our trail a little bit, since it grows up so quickly when we don't keep a handle on it, I saw the neatest little deep cup shaped bird's nest hanging just a couple of feet from the ground on a low hanging hickory limb. It was neatly woven with thin little strips of grass, some bark, lichens from trees, spiderweb and moss. I certainly couldn't build anything like that, could you? I don't know what kind of bird makes a nest like that, but I may have to check in my bird books and see if I can find out. There was no one at home in it at the time, and considering the time of year that it is, and with the heat the way it is, it's probably not a good time for baby birds. If it doesn't look like anything is going to use it, I may have to cut that branch and take the little nest to the Nature Center at the park for everyone to see. It's really a work of art. Don't forget to attend the Pake McEntire concert (Reba's brother) this evening at Robber's Cave State Park. It is being sponsored by Barbara Gilbertson who is running for state representative in Dist. 17, but all proceeds go to benefit our local volunteer fire departments. They have a hard, but very important job and desereve our support. They had the little fire that broke out on our place recently out almost before I even knew there was a fire. Now that's service! I told Danny Foster, our resident weather reporter for Channel 6, that he needed to order us some better weather. He tells me it's on the way. It's odd that they call these the "dog days". Not a dog I know likes it this hot, not even chihuahuas! According to the news last night, there was a suspected heat induced death at Krebs this week. You just don't realize how quickly the heat can overtake you. My daughter went out on the 4 wheeler yesterday off down into the woods and it died on her. She had to walk back up to the house after she and a friend had tried to push on it to get it started, and when she got back she looked exhausted! She was extremely hot, her face was red and she was white around her lips. That's scary! I gave her some cool, not cold, water, a cool wet washcloth and made her lie down on the bed in the room with the window air conditioner, and she got okay before too long. I really wished I had that information that Mark put out yesterday to make sure I wasn't doing the wrong thing. I think now she knows how serious it can be when you get too hot. Tomorrow, Friday July 21, the Latimer County 4H will be having a benefit hamburger cookout from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm in the Wilburton Chamber of Commerce parking lot. They will be serving hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and hot dogs with all the fixings, pop, water and chips, so if you can't eat in the Cafeteria with us, be sure and go down there and have a burger to benefit 4H and be sure to donate generously. 4H has many fun and educational programs for our local kids and they deserve your support. Also, there will be a recycling program set up on Tues. July 25 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm across the highway here in the Agriculture Complex parking lot. They will be accepting car tires, pickup tires and semi-truck tires, as well as batteries, and pesticide containers (which have to be triple rinsed). They will not accept tractor tires or ATV tires. Any further information on either of these activities can be obtained by calling 465-3349. Well, I think if it was as hot at breakfast as it is later in the day, we could fry the breakfast eggs on the sidewalk. I'm not sure we'd get many takers on eating them though. According to the weather report, we are due for another couple of days of this extreme heat and then we'll get a cool spell, all the way down into the 90's! That's sad isn't it? I never thought you could actually refer to the 90's as a cool spell. I think I'm going to have to learn to swim. I'm really starting to believe in global warming and if all those icebergs are going to melt, I'll be in trouble. I can't swim, I don't float, and being vertically challenged and horizontally gifted, I can't even wade very deep. Our menu for today includes: Pork loin Mashed potatoes and gravy Fried squash Winter blend vegetables Macaroni and cheese with little smokies Our fast food is egg rolls with rice. My husband decided to grill yesterday evening, and while he was out doing that some people drove up that wanted to know about the recently vacated house down the hill from us. He came in the house to ask me who the woman is who owns the house and when his back was turned, Cocoa, our outside dog helped herself to one of his pork chops. I think that falls into the category of "no good deed goes unpunished". I didn't get to see her technique on this, but I doubt that it could compare to one of our cats a few years ago that sailed across the picnic table, snatching a steak in midair, and continuing on for a perfect landing and getaway. Luckily there was still enough meat to go around both times. It's a good thing for them we're animal lovers! Don't forget for us adult non-swimmers, Mary Atkinson is offering a swimming class from July 24-27 from 6-7 pm. The cost is $20.00, and class size is limited to 15. I am actually thinking of taking it, if I don't chicken out, since I really need to learn to swim. I always think parents should be the responsible ones, and know how to take care of their children and save them from all manner of things, but in a water situation, I'd be climbing on my daughter's head to get out of it. She swims like a fish; I swim like a rock. I can't swim, I don't float, and being vertically challenged (and horizontally gifted), I can't wade very deep either. The thought of getting into a bathing suit is scary enough, but for me that's not even as scary as the thought of being in all that water. If I don't send out a menu tomorrow, you'll know I probably drowned. It's been fun. For more information on the Adult Learn to Swim Class call Mary at 465-2435. At least I know I'm not the only one in the world who survived to adulthood without learning how to swim. Actually, I guess you could say, I do know how to swim, just like I know how to fly, just flap your arms and take off, but somehow my actions don't translate into the desired result. (Maybe it's because, astrologically speaking, I'm a fire sign. Water is not my element!) Kim Ott was in the class with me, and she better show up again tonight, and she's already ahead of me. She can already float. Somehow when I'm trying to float, I get panicky when my head gets low and water starts going in my ears. I guess I just don't float as high as I feel like I should for my own comfort and security. (I always heard fat floats, but I really doubt this. You sure couldn't prove it by me.) Mary is very patient though and has promised not to drown me or anyone else. I told her I've never wanted to pass a class so badly in my life: I think the ones who don't pass drown! Also, today is election day for several offices from the state level on down to local positions. We all really need to go and make our voices heard in these matters. I've seen the advertisements on TV and some of them are really scary. (I wish they would've taken a lesson from Kathy Taylor who ran a successful campaign for Mayor of Tulsa and did not sling mud at her opponent. Her platform was all about her experience, skills and abilities, and desire to do the job well. Some of these guys running now and in a lot of elections don't seem to be able to build themselves up without tearing the other guy down.) I know everyone says if you don't vote you can't fuss about what the elected officials do, but we know that's not true. It's human nature for us to voice our opinions about what's going on, especially if we don't like it. I know one vote doesn't seem to count for much, but I want to make sure that I at least go and try to get whichever person I feel is most qualified elected. You should too. And today is recycling day at the Agriculture Building across the highway. I never realized what a workout swimming could be, (or actually, just trying not to drown) . I don't know how many of you watch Dave Letterman, but they have a game on there that they play called "Will It Float?" where they drop various objects into a giant tank of water to see if they will float or not. I've about decided that if the object was me, the answer would always be "NO". I'm trying though, and Mary is really encouraging, but I can't seem to get enough confidence in my unsinkability to allow her to let go completely. She may not have to do more than use two fingers to hold me up, but I feel like if she took away that little bit, I'd be a goner. Last night I was so exhausted from class that I couldn't go to sleep once I got in bed. I know that sounds crazy, but it was like I was too tired to go to sleep. I hope I am awake enough to go to class tonight. I may have run down by then. Plus, I got a rude awakening this morning, hearing a big thump on the back of the house. When I listened, I could hear chickens squawking and carrying on like crazy, so I grabbed the flashlight and ran outside just in time to see a little hen running madly in one direction, a rooster going another, and a raccoon heading for the woods! Evidently his intended snack woke up and spoiled his plans. Some of our chickens roost in some cedars at the back of the house, and I think one of them must've hit the wall trying to fly and get away from the raccoon. Ouch! At least the coon didn't have a chicken in it's mouth when I saw it running away. July 27 Message-ID: <44C8D106.2040107@eosc.edu> Hi again, Well, I've survived my third day of swimming class, and learned a really valuable lifesaving tip last night. We used some dumbbell shaped floats to help hold us up in the water for one part of the class, and then Mary brought out several empty milk jugs. Surprisingly enough, she told us that an empty milk jug with the lid on will hold enough air to save your life in an emergency. If there's ever an emergency situation where someone is drowning and there's a milk jug handy, throw it to them. It will float, will help them float until help can arrive and is easy to hold onto. It's very common to have jugs around that you use for water or tea, or that milk came in, but I had never thought they could save a life before. I thought that was worth passing along. Maybe it will save a life someday. Speaking of saving a life, I've got to take my daughter to 4H Safety Day Camp today. They are supposed to learn about water safety, first aid and ATV safety. Since we've gotten tires for the 4 wheeler now, I told her she really needs to learn how to be safe on the thing. It'll make me feel better anyway. Our menu for today includes: Smothered steak Baked pork chops Beef stroganoff Broccoli with cheese Blackeye peas Zucchini and tomatoes Pasta bar Rolls And for dessert have some Pumpkin Pie or Pecan Pie. See you at lunch, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... July 31 Message-ID: <44CE1CA1.9070007@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you all didn't get too hot over the weekend. We had a heck of a mess at our house, what with trying to get our hot water heater changed out. Our old one had started leaking a few days into last week and we knew it was time to replace it, so we just turned off the hot water and roughed it for a few days. As hot as it's been, the cold showers didn't feel too bad. It was a little startling at first, but pretty refreshing. Then we had a rude awakening this weekend when it came time to actually buy a new hot water heater. Our hot water is powered by propane, and come to find out, electric ones and natural gas ones are both less expensive than propane ones for some reason. On some appliances, there is a converter kit that allows you to change from using natural gas to propane or vice versa, but not on water heaters. Anyway, after much cussing and carrying on, my husband was able to unhook the old one and manhandle it outside. Then when he brought the new one in, he discovered that it was shorter and bigger around than the previous model. It would still fit in the space but a few things had to be adjusted a little. He wound up with blisters on his fingers and toes from hot dripping solder, but he managed to get the thing in, hooked up and running, without any major damage to himself, the house, or our marriage. That just leaves me wondering, what's next to break down? Then yesterday evening, (after we all had nice long showers with just enough warm water in them), we had to go to Buffalo Valley to see our oldest nephew, Jacob Chancellor, who is leaving today for a six year stint in the service. Please keep him in your prayers, along with all the other folks who are in jeopardy daily due to the war. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Rosemary potatoes Fried okra Corn on the cob Vegetable medley Hot rolls Our fast food is Barbecue on a Bun with Chips. And for dessert have some luscious Chocolate Cake. Keep cool, Rhoda 8-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
