From rwatkins at eosc.edu Thu Jun 1 09:35:55 2006 From: rwatkins at eosc.edu (Rhoda Watkins) Date: Thu Jun 1 09:36:46 2006 Subject: [Eoscstudents] Menu for Thurs. June 1 Message-ID: <447EFB4B.2090503@eosc.edu> Happy June Everyone, Hard to believe the year is almost half over, isn't it? The Cancer Relay for Life is this Friday night until Saturday morning. I think the idea behind the staying until dawn thing is that when you have cancer you should celebrate each new day as a blessing and an opportunity. Come and walk around the track a few laps, even if you don't stay all night. It will be good for you and give you a chance to visit with everyone, and see all the names of all those who have battled this disease. We have lost many good people to this killer, but with events like this to raise money for research and show support to those afflicted, there's hope that in the future cancer will be just a bad memory and no one will have to go through what so many have gone through before. My mother will be celebrating her 89th birthday this Saturday. That's quite a milestone, but she's got a long way to go to keep up with my Granny who lived to be 99 and one month and Aunt Alma who is 104 1/2 and still mentally sharp as a tack! I'd better shape up if I want to beat records like those! I've got about 60 years to go to catch up with Aunt Alma. Our menu for today includes: Smoked pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn on the cob Green beans Fried squash Our fast food is Burritos with Cheese Sauce. And for dessert you can make your own Ice Cream Sundae. Ice cream brings out the kid in all of us. Enjoy, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... And I hope it will stay that way tonight for the Relay for Life. It should be a lot of fun. The theme this year is "Relaying through TV Land" so all the groups are supposed to pick a TV show to portray. My daughter and I will be with the 4H group, who have decided to be the Beverly Hillbillies. (I always wanted to be Ellie Mae. She was sweet, beautiful, rich, had all the critters you could imagine and she could whip Jethro when he needed it! What more could you ask for?) Remember to wish Dr. Brenda Steuer a happy birthday. A little bird told me she's having one tomorrow and I hope she has a great one. Anybody who loves dogs and birds is alright by me. Our menu for today includes: Chicken strips Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Rolls Our fast food is Nachos with Meat and Cheese sauce. And for dessert we're having Texas Cow Patties. (Okay, not real cow patties, we just called it that in honor of all the Aggie Camp kids we'll be having at lunch. It's really a very good No-Bake Rocky Road Cookie. Be brave and try it) Come on over, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Looking outside, it looks like it could rain any minute, and according to my thermometer, the temperature is only 70 degrees. Sure wish I could be outside in it, at least til it starts to lightning! Then I want to go snuggle up with my dogs and a good book. The Relay for Life went well this weekend. It sure made my legs sore, though. I guess I'm not ready to try out for Coach Stone's track team yet. I don't know how much money was raised for cancer research, but every little bit helps. Our menu for today includes: Forgotten chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Winter blend vegetables Carrots Harvard Beets Baked potato bar Our fast food is Corn Dogs and French Fries. And for dessert have a piece of some delicious Blackberry Cobbler, Cherry Cobbler or some Coconut Cake. Come on over, Rhoda ;-) P. S. Speaking of blackberry cobbler, the blackberries are starting to get ripe so go find a patch and pick ya some before they're all gone! So far, it hasn't been any worse than any other day here. At least it's not a Monday! Now that would be catastrophic! And here's a reminder that the Coffee Shop will not be opening til 10:00 a.m. and closing at 2:00 p.m. during the summer semester. Things will be back to normal in the fall. For those of you who are interested, our storytelling group meets this evening at 7:00 at the Gallery downtown. Feel free to come and join us and tell a story or just listen. It's a lot of fun. For those of you who were brave enough to get out of bed today, our menu consists of: Spaghetti with meat sauce Goulash Steamed red potatoes Peas Steamed squash Baked potato bar (Try some ranch dressing on one of these.) The weather was nice, and we had a good time at our storytelling group meeting last night. It kind of made me think about how much we take for granted nowadays when I went down the hill to go to the meeting last night and looked over toward the beaver pond and saw a big heron standing there, stock still waiting for dinner to come by, and when I came back about an hour and a half later, that same bird was still standing there in that same spot still waiting on dinner to come by. Thank God for good old unhealthy but convenient fast food! If I had to stand in one spot waiting for dinner for an hour and a half, I wouldn't be fit to be around. I'd be biting whatever got close enough! We've got 90's coming up, and not low ones either! Why is it that it seems hotter now than it ever did when I was a kid? It can't be my age or my weight, surely, or the fact that I've lived with air conditioning for several years now . I'm blaming it on global warming! That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Be sure if you see Joni, (aka Dwaynette) the auditor helping in the business office to wish her a very happy 29th birthday. (She's still just a pup.) We have our Kamikaze Kampers back again this year, and for I think the first time we'll be hosting the Free Wheel Bicycle Riders today and tomorrow. Our own Loma Messex is in this group and another local, James Lott that I've known for a few years now. You wouldn't believe me if I told you how old he is and is still as active as if he were twenty! I don't know how they do it. As I've said before I couldn't take the heat. I'd have to get a headlight and ride at night. Probably come daylight, someone would find what was left of me alongside the highway after I'd wiped out on an armadillo or something. Oh well, I'll leave the long distance bike riding (and the short distance riding) to those that are much better able to handle it than I am. I am in awe of them. I also heard this weekend that one of our baseball playing Price brothers got drafted in the 45th round by the Florida Marlins. I won't say which one, because I'd get it wrong. (I'm an only child and I suffer from what I call "only child dyslexia". I tend to get siblings confused, especially if they look as much alike as these two do. Or if they're named similar sounding names. Or sometime all it takes is having the same parents. Is there a support group for this affliction? If any of you also suffer from this, maybe we should start one.) June 15 Message-ID: <44917454.1040306@eosc.edu> Hi everyone, I hope you're having a great day, looking forward to a great weekend. Looking at the weather report on TV, it looks like there's a 70% chance of rain both Saturday and Sunday, but hey, we won't melt will we? It might just cool things off and make everything fresh and green again. As long as it doesn't rain on the rodeo or the parade and festivities downtown on Saturday. The rodeo parade is Saturday at 4:00 and I understand there will be some other things going on in town earlier that day. A reenactment of a bank robbery, possibly. When I was a kid, (back 100 years ago), we used to have a week long festival going on in town every summer called the Belle Starr Western Festival, and I couldn't stand to miss a minute of it. Of course when I got older, I learned that a lot of the merchants thought it was a pain in the derriere, due to traffic congestion, kids running in and out with squirt guns, and a hundred other reasons, but I sure did miss it once they let it die out. Every day at noon, the Belle Starr gang would ride into town, rob the bank, hang someone (with a safety harness), throw loot to the kids and ride out with guns blazing, (blanks of course). It was always very exciting and I thought getting to play Belle Starr would just be the coolest thing ever. I think the objection that finally killed the festival off was that we were glorifying an outlaw, and what did that teach our children? I guess one good thing came out of the demise of the Belle Starr Festival. People realized we did need some sort of a festival or gathering of some sort, so it wasn't too many years, I don't think, before they started the Fall Festival out at Robber's Cave. Our menu for today includes: Roast beef Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli casserole Seasoned baby carrots Brussels sprouts Rolls And our fast food is Chili Dogs with Shredded Cheese. And for dessert I can smell yummy Brownies already, and I'll be tasting one before it's over with, too! June 19 Try new STRAWBERRY FROZEN YOGURT! Message-ID: <4496BF47.5040101@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope all you fathers had a great Father's Day. Even though my husband was out of town and didn't get back in til yesterday evening, I think he was pleased with what we got him. He got a new pair of cargo shorts from Sharpe's that he thought were cool, a new folding chair in a bag since my daughter had recently knocked his old one into the campfire on a fishing trip when her and all her cousins freaked out over a noise they heard coming from the woods and ran for it. And probably his favorite thing was a golf net, so he can hit golf balls into it without having to fetch them back out of the woods amid swarms of mosquitos, ticks and chiggers later. It will probably also save our birds and squirrels from getting knocked in the head by golf balls flying through their neighborhood. We had a really busy weekend without him anyway. Friday we went to the 4H fishing derby at Robber's Cave, then went home and prepared some desserts for the 4H pie auction Friday evening. I haven't heard yet how much money was raised but there was a pretty good turnout and a lot of goodies that people had brought to help raise money for 4H summer activities. The more money they are able to raise, the more they can do with the kids to keep them from sitting around all summer saying, "I'm bored." 4H camp kicks off tomorrow, so that'll keep them busy for a few days. Then Saturday, there was the train robbery and shoot'em up reenactment downtown at noon, and the rodeo parade at 4:00. I got to ride in the parade with another lady in PAWS in her really neat horse and two wheel cart. It was pretty wet right before, but by the time it was over we were almost dry. I thought due to the weather, the rodeo would be cancelled, but they were patient and it stopped raining just in time. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Green beans Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Rolls Our fast food is Chili Cheese Nachos. And for dessert we have Peach Cobbler, and be sure to try some of the new Strawberry Frozen Yogurt in the ice cream machine. It is always sad when a life is cut so tragically short. Ali Martinez just came in and solved a problem I'd been having. I had emptied our PAWS donation cans before our last meeting and was going to give her the money, but as she was unable to attend the meeting, I had just shoved the bag of some dollars and a lot of change into my purse where it had settled into a corner like an anvil, and I'd forgotten all about it. I had recently started to wonder just why my purse was so heavy! I realized I had a lot of papers in it, but papers are not that heavy. When Ali came in and said she had come to get the money, I thought, "That's it!" Sure enough, my purse is pounds lighter now and my arm is much stronger from carrying all that for a month. Anybody want to arm wrestle? Our menu for today includes: Roast beef Mashed potatoes and gravy Carrots Corn Green beans Our fast food is Burritos, with Chili and Cheese. She had just turned 97 last month and my family and her family have been friends for literally generations. (Now, my daugher is best friends forever with her great-granddaughter.) She was buried at Bengal, where I lived until I was 10, and where my grandmother is buried, so I got to go over there and see and visit with a lot of folks I hadn't seen in years. I went by our old house and walked around, looking and remembering and picked up a few odd rocks, a load of seed ticks and an old henhouse gourd that we used to use in the chicken nests to fool the snakes, and give the hens the idea to lay more. It's almost magical the way you can be transported back in time and memory by visiting the old places of your past, seeing things you hadn't seen in years and thinking about things you hadn't thought of since childhood. I'm looking forward to it myself. I keep thinking that maybe I can get some things done that I need to catch up on, but I seem to keep getting distracted. I think I have something I read about in the paper a few weeks ago, called something like "Age-activated Attention Deficit Disorder". It affects you like this example: You set out to wash the car, then when you get the hose out, you realize that the flowers need watered and before you get that done, you realize that the tomatoes need picking. While you're starting to do that you realize the mail has run and you need to collect it and take it inside. As you're doing that you see you have a bill that needs to be paid, then you remember you have to put more checks in the checkbook, etc., etc., etc. The whole day goes on something like that, and at the end of the day, you have accomplished nothing and are totally exhausted! And my husband wonders why I have to make lists of things to do! At least it keeps me on track, and you get a feeling of satisfaction when you can actually check off a few things on your list! I think we have a PAWS adoption day planned for Sat. morning in front of Roy's. Come by and visit with us and adopt a new best friend. It's probably going to be pretty hot, so we'll probably break down early in the afternoon to avoid heat stress on ourselves and the dogs. Sometime it just gets too hot to stay out there any longer. I guess sometimes the early bird really does get the worm. (Sometimes though, they're just wormy. I have a notepad that says "The early bird gets the worm, but I'd rather sleep late and have cheesecake." Amen to that!!!) Our menu for this somewhat stormy day includes: Chicken strips Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Hot rolls Our fast food is Nachos Supreme. And for dessert have a piece of Coconut Cake or a cookie bar. Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I know, I know, I always remind everyone else to put on that sunblock and then forget to myself. My mom always used to tell me, "Don't do as I do, do as I say!" But I got this way helping adopt out dogs, so I have to consider that it's worth it. We got new homes for some PAWS puppies and one large dog from the pound that would've been killed if she hadn't been adopted by some loving people. She looked like she was part pit bull, and I know they have a bad rap as vicious, but she was really loving on one of the little puppies that ran over to where she was. It was sweet to see her act like that, while looking so intimidating. Maybe she's just an old softy. Looks can be deceiving. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Bread sticks Scalloped potatoes Green beans Winter blend vegetables Baked potato bar Our fast food is Meatball Subs. And for dessert we have Peach Cobbler. Come on over, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... June 27 Message-ID: <44A14A00.40603@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I found out yesterday that I had missed wishing a Happy Birthday to one of the sweetest people on campus. Joyce Bills celebrated a birthday on Sunday June 25th and I hope she had a really great one. She is a really special person and it is always a pleasure to deal with her as she is always willing to give you as much time as you need to solve whatever your problem is to your satisfaction. I couldn't believe how chilly it was this morning! It was actually down in the 50's outside! But don't worry, it'll get over it before the day's done. We didn't run the air conditioner and actually had to turn the attic fan off it got so chilly in the house. Our central air went out and we've just been getting by with a small window unit, so when it's not really hot, that's a good thing. And if anyone has any good recommendations on replacement central heat/air unit types, I'd appreciate hearing them. We need to be looking into that, the sooner the better, probably. Our menu for today includes: Baked polish sausage Chicken fried steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Green peas and pearl onions Sauerkraut Carrots Cream style corn Pasta bar Rolls And for dessert we have Chocolate Cake! Excellent! See you at lunch, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... June 28 Message-ID: <44A2AA74.7040803@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Sorry I'm so late getting the menu out. We've had last minute things come up, questions that needed answered right now, etc., but better a little late than never, I guess. My daughter and I took all three of our house beasties to the vet yesterday and got their shots, for rabies, etc., and had them all checked for tick borne diseases which can be deadly to them if left untreated. It was great to hear that they are all clear of anything like that. The little Yorkie, Valentina, even had to have her toenails clipped, since she doesn't run around outside enough to wear them down. (I think she's figured out that that's where those old yucky ticks come from and doesn't want much to do with it. She really doesn't enjoy being held down and "picked on" when she's been out and come back in with hitchhikers.) The test also covers heartworms, I believe, so if you haven't had your pets checked for these things, you really need to. They just draw a small amount of blood, put it in a little tube and onto a special blotter paper contraption which indicates whether or not they have anything to worry about after just a minute or two. On the way there, you would've thought they were being taken to slaughter, with all the panting, yapping and carrying on they were doing. In the lobby, they were all so nervous, they almost had the bench we were sitting on shaking. And one even tried to climb onto my head when we actually got into the exam room. I probably looked like I was having a really bad, fuzzy blonde hair day! Thank God, we don't have to do this but once a year! Our menu for today includes: Smoked pork chops Pinto beans Cornbread Turnip greens Mashed potatoes and gravy Sliced carrots Our fast food is Chili Dogs and French Fries. And for dessert have a piece of German Chocolate Cake. Keep cool, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... June 29 Message-ID: <44A3EA85.5010708@eosc.edu> Hi everyone, I'm sure I'm not the only one who is excited about the upcoming long 4th of July celebration weekend, but in the excitement, please don't forget to be safe with your fireworks and other recreational activities. It was heartbreaking after the Memorial Day weekend to see the news reports of several drownings in the state, even a 5 yr. old child, so we need to be extra careful to think safety and live to enjoy another day. And of course with fireworks thrown into the mix, there's always the chance of a stray spark or still smoldering piece of debris causing a fire to start. As fast as everything dries out in this heat, even though we've had some rain recently, the fire danger is still a big consideration. And if you're in town this weekend, you might try coming to the book signing at the beautifully remodeled Dome House on East Main street. This will be from 1-4 Sunday and refreshments will be served. The author is the son of Pete and Jean Lively, the Dome House owners, and has just returned from Iran. His book of poetry sells for $12.95, and should be very interesting. Congratulations to Mr. Ron Cunningham, the retiring director of the Oklahoma Mining Training Institute here on campus who is retiring after 23 years in the mining industry. That's an impressive record! A reception will be held for him this afternoon in Baker Hall, Room 200, from 1:00 - 3:00. Our menu for today includes: Beef tips White rice Broccoli with cheese Fried squash Macaroni and cheese Refried beans Spanish rice Corn And for dessert come and get some Strawberry Shortcake. Have a great day, Rhoda 8-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: http://lists.onenet.net/pipermail/eoscstudents/attachments/20060629/2944b322/attachment.html
