From mebutler at eosc.edu Wed Nov 1 10:39:18 2006 From: mebutler at eosc.edu (Mary Butler) Date: Wed Nov 1 09:37:54 2006 Subject: [Eoscstudents] food drive Message-ID: <4548CDB6.8020501@eosc.edu> The Library Media Center is sponsoring its annual food drive these weeks before Thanksgiving. We will fix boxes of the donated food on Wed., Nov. 15 and Thurs., Nov. 16 to distribute to our student families who might need some help over the holidays. We would appreciate any donations of non-perishable food or money. The money donated is used to buy meat gift certificates so that the student families who receive the food boxes can get a turkey or ham for their holiday meal. The collection area is in the library. The last day to bring food will be Wed., Nov. 15. The library will (as in the past) eliminate student library fines if they bring in food. If you owe $1.25, for instance, you could bring in two cans of veggies. We'd eliminate the fine and the food will help other students! Any club participation is welcome. Thanks for your help. Last year we helped 14 families, if I remember correctly. The generosity of the Eastern students is always heartwarming. Thanks, Mrs. M.E. Nov. 1 Message-ID: <4548C443.9050400@eosc.edu> Happy November everyone, Can you believe it's already November? And while most people are starting to count the days til Christmas, Novella is counting the days til the day after Thanksgiving, (you know, that BIGGEST shopping day of the year.) She's been out walking the track trying to get her time down so she can beat everyone else to the best bargains. Well, all the ghouls and goblins have crawled back into their hiding places for another year, and the bats have evacuated the Cafeteria, (except for that big one that I'm going to have to get down with a ladder). This was really the first year that my daughter hasn't actually done any trick or treating, but she couldn't quit Halloween cold turkey. Besides the big family Halloween party we went to, and the 4H Halloween bash, she decided yesterday that she needed to go over and hand out candy for my mom. Never mind that Mom is 89, didn't buy any candy except for a few kids that she knows, and didn't really want to mess with it. Destiny just decided that she was going to hand out candy "for Grandma" and her daddy, (a big kid himself), went right along with it, so we wound up raiding Alco for a massive bag of candy to hand out. Kids generally learn from experience where to go for the good stuff and who doesn't hand out candy, so nobody was expecting anything at Mom's. Poor Destiny only had 6 kids come by, so we still have a huge amount of candy. I may have to bring some of those yucky looking Gummy Body Parts here for the students to eat. Or maybe I should donate them to the science lab to experiment on. (Destiny is already planning for next year. She's decided that she's going to dress up, decorate and light candles, etc. Could be a new tradition being born.) Our menu for today is not nearly as creepy sounding as the one yesterday. Dorito bake Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Green beans Fried okra Pizza is the fast food for the day. And we have some luscious Lemon Cake for dessert. Come and get it, Rhoda :-) P. S. Be prepared for frost in the morning. It's supposed to be cold. Time to find the scraper and buy de-icer! rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Fortunately, I have a little heater hidden under my desk that keeps me cozy in here. I didn't have as much frost on my windshield as I thought I would. I didn't even have to use the de-icer I finally tracked down at O'Reilly's yesterday. I'm sure I will before too long, though. Evidently good news spreads fast, no matter where you are. Word has spread all through the woods near our house that we have raccoon accessible cat and/or dog food available 24/7. This morning there were two groups of 3 or 4 raccoons each milling around outside our front door, either eating or waiting to eat at our automatic dog and cat feeder. The amazing thing is, they are much better at it than the dogs or cats it's made for. A couple of them would be sticking their little paws in the swinging door where the food is supposed to come from, while another one got impatient and poked his little pointy nose up to the top, raising the lid, so he could climb up there and sit eating out of the hopper. Talk about thinking out of the box! They are some pretty smart little critters! Don't forget to go see the hypnotist in the auditorium tonight at 8:00. I saw it last year and it is hysterical. If you sit up close you might get picked to participate in the show, too. Please focus your attention on the balance due at the end of this statement. This is the amount that you currently owe. If you have made any payments or if any additional charges have accrued since November 2, they are not reflected on this statement. All students are responsible to pay any outstanding balance, including all prior semester charges on their account, prior to the beginning of classes on January 8, 2007. Any student with a charge on their account, other than charges for the spring 2007 semester, will be academically withdrawn from classes for nonpayment. Payments may be made by check, money order, VISA, MasterCard or Discover. Cash payments will only be accepted at the Business Office located on the first floor of the Library building. I couldn't see anything over a few feet in front of my vehicle. It's a good thing I knew where I was going! It's such a weird feeling being out in the middle of all that fog, not able to see any landmarks, lights in the distance or anything except what's just in the immediate area. You really have to be cautious and drive slowly and carefully so that you make it to where you're going all in one piece. Don't forget today is election day for several political offices and four state questions. These state questions were covered in the last edition of the Statesman, so if you don't feel like you know enough about them, find a copy of the Statesman and read up a little. Then you can make a more educated decision on the issues. Some state questions can be tricky in the way that they're written. You may think you're voting for something, but they way it is worded can cause you to do just the opposite, so be sure and read them carefully. But above all DON'T FORGET TO VOTE TODAY!!! You know if you lived in a country where you did not have the privilege of doing so, you'd give anything for it, so don't waste it. Go participate in our government. Tonight is our Storytelling Group Meeting at the Gallery downtown at 7:00, so anyone interested in telling stories or just listening is welcome to come. We always have a good time. After that, though, it's supposed to chill down about twenty degrees or so for several days. Back to more like normal for this time of year. The weather men are already tearing into persimmon seeds to see if we're having a cold winter, a wet winter or a dry winter, depending on whether the inside of the seed looks like a knife, fork or spoon. I haven't looked into any of those, but I do remember seeing squirrels gathering nuts like crazy several weeks ago, as if in preparation for a long, cold winter. We'll just have to wait and see what we get. Surprisingly, I haven't heard any geese going over yet. My husband said he did a few days ago when he got up at some awful hour to go to work. Maybe when these two warm days are over and the cooler front starts coming through, they'll get the hint. Well, the elections are over, so the mud-slinging can cease, along with the recorded messages to "vote for me", and the constant ads on TV. Some of those politicians never seem to learn to run on their own merits, not on the worst thing they can think of to say about their opponent. It's hard for me to root for someone who acts so mean spirited to others. I hope you all voted yesterday, especially those of you newly registed through the recent voter registration drive. They say if you don't vote, you can't gripe about the way things are run, but we know that's not true. I think there's an amendment covering "Freedom to Gripe", (probably one of the most used amendments of all). I did manage to get to Staples this weekend and get a brand new gadget for the office. (It does everything but cook for us and if I could've found one that would do that too, I'd've had to get one for my house, too.) You probably all remember about the untimely demise of my printer recently. Well, now I have a brand new printer, copier, fax, scanner to figure out how to hook up. Then I'll be back up and running, able to print my own forms, etc. without having to sneak in and invade Novella's space everytime she turns around. It may require some expert help to get it hooked up right before it's over with, though. Wish me luck with that. If you can't get by one day this week to see the play "The Golden Goose" being performed by our Theatre Dept. and several area school children, be sure and make plans to see it Friday evening. I know there's been a lot of hard work put in on it and it should be really entertaining. Get ready for the temperature to drop several degrees tomorrow. Earlier in the week, they were even talking like it might snow, but I think they've changed their forecast to just rain. (Thank goodness!) Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Spanish rice Pinto beans Cornbread Turnip greens Crispy cube potatoes Corn Macaroni and tomatoes Our fast food line will have Steak Sandwiches and French Fries. And for dessert try a piece of yummy Lemon Cake. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Nov. 15 Message-ID: <455B373E.4070609@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you all brought your umbrellas today. Everybody that came in for breakfast was spotted. They all had to walk over through the rain and you could look at them and tell it was really coming down out there at times. I know we can really use the rain, but if there's mud, it can go somewhere else. I feel like I've got so much to do in the next couple of days, I don't know where to start. Tracy Clark did get to come by yesterday evening and hook up my new machine so I can print now, so that should take care of one project, then I need to do billing, work on time cards, do dailies, etc., etc., etc. This being off can really throw off your work schedule. Not that I'm complaining about it, mind you. I fully intend to enjoy it, and hope I can get a lot of stuff done at my house. I am just going to have to figure out when and how to get a lot of stuff done here in a very little time. Wish me luck with that. Our Thanksgiving dinner menu includes: Turkey Dressing Mashed potatoes and gravy Baked ham Baked beans Green beans Corn Sweet potatoes Hot rolls And for dessert we have Pecan Pie Squares, Pumpkin Pie Squares, and Fresh Apple Cake. And remember, we're thankful for all of you that allow us to serve you every day. Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... On this day next year Oklahoma will be 100 years old! That sounds like a lot 'til you think that we are actually one of the youngest states, being the 46th one admitted into our great nation. (They saved the best for close to last, you know.) Maybe next year we'll have our new Student Life and Learning Center under construction. I believe Eastern itself turns 100 in 2008, so maybe our building will be done for that, if not for the occasion of our statehood. It's also Susie Smith's birthday, (the Coffee Shop gal), and she's not even half that old yet! Be sure and tell her Happy Birthday today if you run into her. It was wonderful to hear that we got a good report from North Central Accreditation team. I know there have been a lot of our people putting in a lot of work toward accomplishing this, and they deserve a lot of credit for a job well done. It's encouraging to hear that the students feel good about us, just as we do about them, and that no matter what happens to upset the smooth flow of things or throw us off our game, the students are still taken care of first. That's what we're all about and we have a wonderful crew that pays attention to that. I was happy to see that when the group was asked, quite a large percentage of our staff members, myself included, have been students at this college, so we bring personal experience with us as to how a lot of issues should best be dealt with. We've been there and we care about the kids. Congratulations to everyone on a favorable reveiw! Our menu for today includes: Grilled chicken patty Steamed red potatoes Rice Steamed cabbage Corn Sweet peas Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food for the day is a BBQ Sandwich and Potato Chips. And for dessert we have Peach Cobbler, Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars or Chocolate Cake. Come and get it, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Nov. 17 Message-ID: <455DDA2B.9030708@eosc.edu> Hi everyone, Well, when we get this day over with, most of us can breathe a sigh of relief, and go home for Thanksgiving: food, fun and family, and food, (did I mention food?) I hope you all have a very enjoyable Thanksgiving break. All of us have something to be thankful for, whether it be the opportunity to receive a good education to prepare us to make our way in the world, the productive work of providing that education, or whatever kind of work we do to assist in that endeavor, as well as family, friends and pets who make our lives worth living. Remember to take time to count your blessings and give thanks to the provider of all good things. Be sure and wish Karen Darby a Happy Birthday today. By a strange coincidence, her twin sister Kelly Bogard is having a birthday too, so you'd better make those wishes doubled. I hope they have a lot of fun on their special day. And don't forget, this evening at 7:00 is your last chance to go and see "The Golden Goose". Don't let the golden goose get away without you! Our menu for today includes: Chicken and noodles Mashed potatoes Green beans Corn Fried okra Hot rolls Baked potato bar As always, Pizza is a big hit on the fast food line. And for dessert try some Sock-it-to-Me Cake, or a yummy Chocolate Brownie. Nov. 28 Message-ID: <456C5951.9050807@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope the email system is working better today than it did yesterday when I tried to send out my daily menu. By the time it was working and I could send it, I think lunch was over! Oh well, stuff happens. These computers are wonderful tools when they work properly, but when they don't, they make you want to pull someone's hair out and scream. (I never have been a big fan of pulling my own hair out. And I hope our computer guys don't think I mean them either. I'm just saying that in a general sense, although, maybe that's why they pretty much all have short or no hair.) Much sympathy goes out to the Jimmy Gammons family. What a sad thing to lose a husband and father at such a young age. Remember to keep them in your prayers. Better enjoy this last wonderful weather day. Tomorrow the bottom falls out. Better be ready for anything, maybe even snow. Stock up on the good books and hot chocolate. For those of you who've been having ice cream cravings, please be patient. We have to have a part replaced in our machine, so we'll have to wait for it to come in, and then see if we can manage to fix it ourselves, or if we'll have to call in the (expensive) experts. We have a great menu for today (right when I'm thinking I need to cut down on my eating, too): Parmesan chicken Spaghetti Marinara sauce Scalloped potatoes Garden blend rice Sweet peas Corn Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is Corn Dogs and Fries. Nov. 29 Message-ID: <456DAD60.5040205@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you're ready for cold weather, 'cause it's supposed to hit this evening. Tomorrow is supposed to be really cold with an Arctic cold front due to be coming through this area, and Friday should still be pretty chilly. If we get the snow and or ice they're predicting, Friday may be pretty slippery. We had Long Johns in the Cafeteria this morning, maybe to remind everyone to dig theirs out. I saw the email this morning that Paul Enis sent out letting everyone know that Candlelighting is this coming Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00. If the weather hasn't gotten you in the mood for Christmas by then, surely their beautiful music and singing will. I noticed yesterday that downtown has got Christmas garland and bows on the new light posts, and other Christmas decorations up and in store windows. I guess I'd better hurry and get inventory done as fast as I can so I can start decorating over here. Things get really busy this time of year. Not regular busy, but concentrated, packed-in busy. Just when I think I'm getting a pretty good routine going, along comes something that throws it off in a major way, but I guess if that didn't happen things could get pretty boring, huh? I know all the students and faculty are just counting the days til semester end and Christmas break. Our menu for today includes: Dorito bake Mashed potatoes and gravy Okra Black eye peas Corn on the cob Macaroni and cheese with smoked sausage And our fast food is Burritos with chili and cheese and French Fries. For dessert we have luscious Banana Pudding. Come on over and enjoy, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Nov.30 Message-ID: <456F0042.2030104@eosc.edu> Hi folks, This weather situation is much on everyone's mind today. I've had the Weather Program on my computer all morning and been watching where all the bad weather is located. It appears that we're right in between the rain going out and the really cold stuff coming in. The temperature started at 34 degrees and stayed there for quite a while, but I see now that it's dropped to 32, so I guess that means the cold wave is getting somewhat closer. On the radar map there's a large mass of cold air with a light ice mix and snow heading this way. It appears to be over McAlester on the map, so it shouldn't be long at all til it gets here and will drop the temperature even more. Be sure and drive carefully when you leave today. Just because it may not look icy or slick doesn't mean it isn't. Remember to bring your pets in or provide them with adequate shelter to handle the weather. Just because they have a fur coat doesn't mean being in the cold and wet weather doesn't bother them. Check their water frequently, too, as it will freeze quickly. And if you're into feeding the birds, this would be a good time to have your feeders full of sunflower seeds for them. That's a big favorite of most kinds of wild birds. Be sure to turn in your Employee Christmas Dinner invitation by tomorrow at noon so we can get a firm count on how many to prepare for. Hard to believe it's that time already, isn't it? Any hardy souls who are interested are invited to our PAWS meeting this evening at 7:00 at the Public Library. We all love animals and always have a great time getting together and sharing stories. Our menu for today includes: Pork loin Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Baked beans Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is Tacos. And for dessert we have Luscious Lemon Cake. Bundle up and come on over, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
