It's back to shorts weather, and I had just almost gotten around to shifting everything around in my closet. It has begun to look kind of creepy here in the Cafeteria. I think you'll probably notice when you come for lunch. Would you believe me if I told you that all those ghouls and goblins trying to escape out those creepy old doors are our dishwashers trying to escape? That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Don't forget you've got one last chance to go see "The Odd Couple" tonight at 7:30. I don't know what I was thinking Saturday night when I intended to go but I really intend to get there this evening. I really hate to hear that we are losing Shonnie Hall and Debbie Phillips from our Eastern family. I'll really miss both of them, as I'm sure the rest of you will too. I hope they're both really happy in whatever they go to do, but not so happy that they forget to keep in touch with us. Our menu for today includes: Chicken enchilada casserole Steamed red potatoes Peas Baby carrots Corn Rice Baked potato bar Our fast food is a Meatball Sub with Marinara Sauce, and Tator Bucks. And for dessert have some German Chocolate Cake. Have a great week, -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The only clue that it's not is that it is starting to get dark so doggone early! I hate losing daylight. I think I must have that S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder) that affects so many people. I want more daylight than what we get during the winter months. I finally got to go see the play, "The Odd Couple" last night and really enjoyed it. Much congratulations to our theater department and their new director, Debra Collins Bailey, on their first successful endeavor of the year. I see from the flyers posted around campus that they are already getting ready for their next effort. I know they will do well at it. Don't forget for those of you involved in it, that tonight is our Storytelling Group meeting at 7:00 at the Gallery downtown. For those of you who have never been to it, come on out and just listen if you don't want to tell a story. This month, we are all supposed to tell a scary story. This should get us ready for Halloween which will be here before we know it. Our hearts go out to Sam and Zella Stone at the passing of their son, Sam. I pray that the Lord gives them the strength to deal with this tragedy and come out whole. They were right in front of our door eating the food we had put out for our herd of cats. They didn't seem very disturbed at my opening the door, turning the light on and looking at them. At first they looked around like they were wondering what was going on and why it was daylight all of a sudden, then they looked up and saw me, ate a little bit more and finally decided to trundle off somewhere more private, just in case. They are such cute animals. I wish they didn't eat everything, probably including most of our chickens and ducks. Don't forget to attend the Fall Concert this evening at 7:00. They are always enjoyable, and with the wide variety of music they perform, you never know what you'll hear. I had to go clean the PAWS pens, and I had told my daughter, Destiny, we would go to the concert, so I had to be ready to do that. I figured she would enjoy the tunes from the cartoons and sitcoms, but she really thought the one from "Napoleon Dynamite" was "flippin' sweet". She loves that movie. When we left we drove past Miller Hall, and I told her that that was the girls dorm, or at least it was back when I was going to college here. She looked over there and said, "Then why are all those guys hanging around out front?" "Because it's the girls dorm," I told her. Tonight the "Battle of Gowen Mountain" will take place at Hartshorne. It's the many year old rivalry between Wilburton and Hartshorne, settled every year on the football field. It should be a good game if you're looking for something to do. I found out last week that you have to keep your eyes open at all times, though. When Wilburton scores a touchdown the cheerleaders throw little souvenir footballs into the crowd. I was just looking around at the crowd and all of a sudden...Whap! One of those little souvenir footballs hit me right square in the shoulder! I remember so many times when Destiny was little and we'd go to games and she wanted so badly to catch one of those things and they'd never even come close to us. Then when you're not suspecting a thing...Boom! Another thing going on this weekend is the "Bigfoot Festival" at Honobia. I think this may only be the second year for this festival, but it sounds interesting. Who knows? You might actually see Bigfoot off down there somewhere! I got here, stopped and parked, dropped something in the floor, and bent down to pick it up and when I raised back up, the sprinkles had started. According to the thermometer on my computer, courtesy of theWeather Channel, it is only 61 degrees here. It finally feels like fall! I even had a hot chocolate this morning just because it's a good fall thing to do. Last Friday, Novella and I got to attend a planning meeting to discuss the new building. It's pretty exciting to actually get to see what they've got in the works for us after hearing about it for so long. We also got to give the planners a few suggestions regarding our portion of the construction, which we hope will prove helpful and make the building a better fit for our needs. I believe they said they should be breaking ground in January. I hope it's not frozen by then! I think breaking ground is supposed to be more of an expression than a literal term. Our friendly little raccoon family was back last night, eating cat food like crazy. Right in our front door, too. I thought when we stopped putting food out in the automatic feeder they'd move on. I didn't mean move on into our front door where we're feeding the cats now! There was a stubby tailed possum out there first, but when I looked out, he waddled off. Then when I looked out again, there were a couple of raccoons. I motioned for my husband to come over and we stood there watching them for a while, completely undisturbed by us. They finally started looking off to the left like they were seeing something that was making them uneasy, and then they took off. We opened the door and went out only to see two more raccoons standing there, waiting their turn at the food, I suppose. We have more critters than we know what to do with. I had heard that there had been some sightings around there, but we had never actually seen one. We even went to Wister Lake once hoping to see the ones that are supposed to nest in that area, but didn't have any luck. We had gone on a beautiful sunny day, and the park employee there told us that the best days for sightings are when the weather is not so good, maybe cloudy or overcast. Evidently when the weather is sunny, the eagles fly so high up you can't get a look at them, but when the visibility is reduced they fly lower down. That was quite an experience seeing our national bird right in this area! There was a time when I thought some of the students here were not very friendly. They would come in the Cafeteria for breakfast on days when I was working the front and I'd speak to them and they wouldn't say anything. Sometimes I'd try again a little louder and only when they were actually looking at me did they acknowledge that I'd said anything. After my daughter got an Ipod, I realized the problem and began looking for (and seeing plenty of) little wires coming from the kids' ears. They're not antisocial, they're just plugged in! Maybe I'll just wave to them. Our menu for today includes: Dorito bake Mashed potatoes and gravy Capri blend vegetables Deep fried okra Corn Pasta bar Our fast food is Pizza. It was darn near freezing this morning. I actually think I saw some frost at the house, luckily not on my car windshield. And if you have cats, especially kittens, try to remember to honk your car horn or bang on the hood before you start your car. They love curling up in cozy warm places and unfortunately, too many times they think under the hood of a vehicle near the heat of the motor is just too cozy to pass up. If they can't come in the house, try to have them a warm box with some bedding in it that they can nestle into without getting into dangerous places that they need to stay out of. Sad news to report. My printer, like Novella's recently did, has died. We were expecting it, but hoped it would beat the odds. I had asked Keith Lewis about Novella's problem a while back and he found a web site where dozens of people were emailing in with the same problem on the same model we both had. We pretty well knew by that what to expect. Services are pending. Get ready to party, there's a birthday for someone on campus or someone connected to someone on campus today, tomorrow and Sunday. My family and I journeyed to Keota Saturday for the Overstreet-Kerr Historical Farm Fall Festival and ran into Les and Ruth Brelsford along with C. C. and Suzee Puckett. That's always an enjoyable place to visit and they looked like they were having a good time too. Then Sunday my husband and I went to the Latimer County Genealogical and Historical Society meeting where the guest speaker was Eastern's own Coach Clyde Wooldridge. His subject was the history of coal mining in this area, which is a major reason a lot of our ancestors came to this area. He has written a book on this subject which should make for very interesting reading, with stories on some of the influential citizens (and maybe some of the infamous citizens, too) that played a part in the history of the towns in this area. He also mentioned that he has written a book about the history of Eastern Oklahoma State College, which is due out in the spring, and should also be very interesting reading. He also said that if he is invited back, (and I bet he will be), he has information to share on the origin of last names and their meanings. That could be a lot of help in doing genealogical research, as well as just interesting to listen to. I hope as many of you as can are planning to attend the lecture given by Rep. Jari Askins today at 11:00 in Mitchell Auditorium. It is not every day that we have the opportunity to learn from someone so influential in our state, and it should be well worth attending. I'm really hoping it doesn't decide to rain on the Fall Festival this weekend, either. That would mess up a lot of people's plans. The Latimer County 4H will be having a Child ID booth at the Festival on Saturday. You can bring your child, grandchild, friend's child or whatever and have them fingerprinted, have their picture made and a DNA sample taken to have on file just in case they are ever missing. It's really better to be safe than sorry. Yesterday's lecture by Jeri Askins was very informative. I hope the students appreciate the value of getting to learn from the experiences of those who have achieved many goals and had much success in their professional lives. We always know that young men can be anything they set their minds to when they grow up, but Jari Askins serves as an example (if you didn't know it by now) that women can go far and do great things in the world today, also. I believe this evening starting at 6:00 or so, there will be a clean-up on Main Street in preparation for the Fall Festival. All equipment will be provided, they just need people to participate and get the job done before this weekend. Also, today from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and tomorrow from 8:00 to 11:00 there will be parent-teacher conferences at Wilburton Schools, so be sure and go talk to your child's teachers while you have a good opportunity. Be sure and visit the Fall Festival at Robber's Cave if you can at all. There are always lots of things to look at, buy and eat, not to mention a carnival with rides and games. Saturday they will have the car show which is really catching on as the years go by. It seems to keep growing every year. They will also have a quilt show in the part of the building to the left of the Nature Center. If you're staying on campus and don't have a vehicle, just walk down to Fern's lot in the middle of town and a shuttle will be making runs all day to take people to the Festival and bring them back later. Some of you may have noticed that we haven't had our regular salad bar available for a few days. We're having compressor problems, but Danny and Alan have one on order, so as soon as it comes in and they can get it installed, we'll be back to having more salad bar selections for you to choose from. I hope I can begin to get back in the swing of things at the house today and get some stuff done, which is what I had intended to do yesterday originally. We did find some good bargains at a few rummage sales this weekend, and got to replace our out of commission dishwasher with a working one for $20.00. Not bad. I also found one of those snuggly fleece blankets that zips and snaps around you and boy did it come in handy Saturday night at the family Halloween Party. I couldn't believe how cold it got! And this morning my station wagon was all frosted over and had to be scraped and thawed before I could come to work. I'm glad it's not 100 degrees anymore, but I wasn't ready for this stuff yet either. Don't forget to attend the book reading and discussion this evening at the Latimer County Public Library at 7:00 pm. Rilla Askew, (Ruth Brelsford's sister and author of several books set in mostly rural Okla.) will be there to talk about her book "Fire in Beulah", a work of fiction, but with some historical facts taken from Okla. history dealing with the infamous Tulsa race riots in the Greenwood District. She may still be out driving up all that free gas she won a while back. It should take her a while though so no telling where she could go or what stories she could tell when she got back! I enjoyed attending the book reading by Rilla Askew last night of her book "Fire in Beulah", and she mentioned that she may be back in the spring for another similar event. The Goddard Building across the highway will be hopping tonight with the 4H bunch all over there for their Halloween Bash. That is one organization that really has a lot for kids to participate in. And it's not all about showing livestock. They do a lot of educational and fun field trips in the summer with the kids, and community service type things, like the child ID booth they had at the Fall Festival last weekend and the Veteran's Day Program coming up in November. It's really a good thing for kids to get involved in. Oct. 25 Message-ID: <453F7B24.7090903@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, it sure did seem like some good sleeping weather this morning! Unfortunately, that's not what the world had in store for most of us, is it? The patter of the rain is so soothing it just makes you want to shut off the alarm, stretch, roll back over and go back to sleep. Me and my family went to the 4H Halloween Bash last night and it was a lot of fun. There were hot dogs and smoked grillers cooked by Tony Johnson on the new grill they got with a grant for doing meat demonstrations, along with other snacks and drinks. And if you think "Dancing with the Stars" is entertaining, you should've seen some of the moves those 4H kids were doing. One kid was on the floor doing one handed cartwheels. It's a good thing he could do them one handed, too. His other arm was in a cast! Quite a few of the kids got into the line dancing lessons, while others were watching the movie, "Monster House." They also had a dance contest, a pumpkin carving contest, and a costume contest with plaques for the winners to take home. My husband even got talked into judging some of it. Of course we had to check out the new addition to the building while we were there. That ought to come in really for all the stock shows they have over there. Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Pinto beans Corn bread Steamed cabbage Fiesta corn California blend vegetables Baked potato bar Hot rolls It's Pizza Day on the fast food line. She said she had just had to go put a jacket on. I wish she'd have brought me some of that cool air today. Usually I have too much of it, but not today. It's nice and cool outside though, so it really felt good to go out there and stand for a minute. We'll be having our PAWS meeting this evening at 7:00 at the public library if anyone wants to attend. We are always glad to have new members that love animals as much as we do. All you coffee drinkers in the Library Building need to check out the new flavored creamers we put out by the coffee pot in front of Joyce and Gwen's office. There's French Vanilla, Swiss Chocolate, Hazelnut and Cinnamon Cream. Those should perk up that boring cup of coffee. It looks like the weather this weekend should be really nice, and the trees have started changing into their beautiful fall clothes, so this should be a great time to go over Talimena Drive or just go out to Robber's Cave and walk around and enjoy nature. Don't go somewhere where you'll get shot for a deer. It's too bad that when the weather starts cooling off and the trees get beautiful it's too dangerous to go outside and enjoy it in a lot of places, because that's when all the hunters are out trying to shoot things. Remember to be careful! (That goes double for the deer!) If you know for sure that you will have a participant but not sure on their talent, still e-mail me. If you do not plan to participate this year (but we hope that you will), please contact me also. It's hard to believe it's the end of October already. Halloween is just days away and Homecoming is next weekend. There are a lot of fun activities planned for Homecoming Week so be sure and go check as many of them out as you can. I was able to go to the Eastern Idol contest last year and it was very entertaining. And the hypnotist was hilarious. I took my daughter and one of her friends and I'm sure she'll want to go back to that. I know I do. Somehow I didn't get to go to the Mr. Eastern competition, but maybe I'll get to this year. That should be quite a show, too. Don't forget to set your clocks back this weekend and take advantage of that extra hours sleep that you get once a year at this time. I know I could always use some extra sleep. Life is so busy! I'll sit down to watch TV and sleep through everything I want to see. It's only the things that I don't like that annoy me enough to stay awake, if only to change the channel! What's wrong with that picture? Our menu for today includes: Chicken strips Spaghetti Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli with cheese sauce Fried okra Rice Corn Baked potato bar Hot rolls We've got Pizza on the fast food line. I know I saw a bloodthirsty pirate already, (sadly, it was definitely not Johnny Depp), coming in here trying to steal all our gold. Fortunately the only gold we've got in here is our scrambled eggs this morning, and I don't think that's the kind of gold pirates are looking for. (Although if they laid off the rum and ate in here more often they might not come down with rickets and scurvy so often. Not to mention having fewer hangovers!) Don't forget that we have the Food Equipment Demonstration trailer out front so everyone can go take a peek at some of the newequipment available to consider for the new building. He opened at 8:00 so anyone can go out and take the tour anytime today and see what you think. This should be especially interesting to people who like to cook and want to see the newest and latest thing in kitchen equipment. Be sure and get all your club and organization members to participate in the Campus Beautification competition today between 1:00 and 3:00. There will be prizes awarded and Spirit Points given, plus, it's just a good thing for our campus. And don't forget the first round of the Eastern Idol Contest this evening in the Auditorium. Go and cheer on your favorite act(s) and maybe they will become the next Eastern Idol. Who knows where they could go from there? Our ghoulish menu for today includes: Bloody meatballs over fresh maggots Bat wings (with the fur removed) Naked eyeballs with pearl onions Baked beans with pig snouts (minus the oink) Macaroni brains with cheese sauce and fly specks (Ghoulishly delicious!) Children of the Corn (on the cob) Moldi fungi (it just doesn't get any better than this) For the ghoul on the go, our fast food is BBQ Worm sandwiches with French Fried Brains. Yum!
