Take a tip from Mark Hill's safety message and don't drink and drive, especially if you're going to be at the lake or will be in lots of holiday traffic. I know there will be a lot of traffic going to and coming from the Choctaw Festival at Tuskahoma, so be extra cautious if you're going that way. They will be having musical entertainment, free carnival rides and lots of arts and crafts and food booths. Congratulations to Matt Huggard, the winner of the Dr. Pepper bicycle and helmet we drew for here in the Cafeteria. We hope he enjoys it in good health and rides safely. We spent lots of time at the Choctaw Labor Day Festival at Tuskahoma and had a good time, looking at everything, visiting with people I hadn't seen in a while and some I had just seen here at work, and eating everything in sight. I was terribly sad to hear the announcement on the radio of the death of the "Crocodile Hunter", Stever Irwin. He was a rare breed, a man who would rather protect animals than kill them, and with a deep concern for our planet. It hurts us all when bad things happen to good people. It concerns the slaughtering of American horses for sale to foreign countries for food. I just can't conceive of anyone killing a horse to eat. And I can't conceive of anyone in Oklahoma, where we love horses, agreeing with it, but unless we call in and let our congressman know this, that's the way it will go. If you don't like the idea of horses being slaughtered for food, be sure and call Dan Boren today and let him know this. His phone number is 202-225-2701 and he needs our input. That's the way government is supposed to work. An alternate number is for the Congressional Switchboard, in case you can't get through on the first one: 202-224-3121. This bill is called the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, H.R. 503. Our menu for today (which does not include horse meat) is: Fried chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn on the cob Rice Pinto beans Cornbread Turnip greens Hot rolls Pasta bar Our fast food is PIZZA! Yes, I do come in very early in the morning. You know when you're driving to work by the light of the moon, it's way too early. And I am N. A. M. P. (Not a Morning Person.) I don't mind getting up early on the weekends as long as I know I can enjoy the lovely morning and then go back to bed when I've had my fill of it. I guess I'm just naturally a night owl, which probably explains where my daughter gets it. I believe today is check-in day for Latimer County Free Fair exhibits. That means there should be lots of wonderful homemade goodies and handcrafted items to look at and maybe even buy tomorrow, so be sure and get by there and check it all out. If you have anything you've made this past year, there might even be a category you could enter it in and win some money. Funny how a week shortened by a holiday can still seem like it takes forever to get through sometimes. I hope this weekend is a lot less busy than last weekend was. I need the rest! I just found out that one of our Eastern folks is having a birthday today. Danny Foster is getting just a little bit older than me today, but I'll be catching up to him soon. Be sure and wish him a happy birthday if you see him. I hope he doesn't have too wild a weekend either! Don't forget to go check out the Latimer County Free Fair across the highway at the Agriculture Complex, (the Goddard Building to us old timers). I may have to go check out the pet show this evening at 6:00 pm. Looking at the Fair Book, it looks like the exhibits can start being picked up by tomorrow at 2:00, so if you want to see everything, you need to get there before then. Our menu for this fine fair Friday includes: Hamburger steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Winter blend vegetables Black eye peas Baked beans Pasta bar Our fast food is Quesadillas. Sept. 11 Message-ID: <45057E7D.9020204@eosc.edu> Hi everyone, Well, as I'm sure you're all aware, today is the 5 year anniversary of the bombing of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Definitely a day to remember and be thankful that we're in no worse shape than we are at this point. And a day to make a special effort to pray for our leaders on all levels, that they do not fail at their appointed tasks to do what's best for our country, our state, our community and even our college. Our little family grew this weekend. We were driving around Saturday and came across seven abandoned cats and kittens. Luckily my husband has a soft heart too, (I couldn't live with anybody who didn't), so we wound up taking them all home. Now I can honestly say we have more cats than we know what to do with. (We had five already.) Evidently, someone had cleaned out their neighborhood of as many cats as they could catch. And I had recently had a request from Cyndi Deela to help her find homes for five kittens that she had, and a call from another friend with three, so if anyone needs a new cat or kitten, I can definitely fix that for you. It's sad when people dump their or their neighbors pets out like that. Pets come to trust and depend on humans and that trust should be honored. I'm just glad we found them as soon as we did, before they starved or became meals for the coyotes or some other predator. They are all friendly and healthy looking, so if you need a new pet, please let me know. Our menu for today includes: Chicken enchilada casserole Steamed red potatoes Peas Baby carrots Corn Rice Baked potato bar Rolls For a fast food today, we have Meatball subs with Marinara Sauce and Tator Tots. It rained at my house, cooled things off and softened up the ground, making for perfect weed pulling weather, for as we all know, weeds can grow no matter what kind of weather you've got, and they've been spending a lot more time growing than I have in pulling them lately with all the heat we've been having. Thinking back to the 9-11-01 tragedy, it reminds me how in the aftermath of it all, the skies were eerily empty with the banning of plane travel for a time. Then when they were finally allowed back in the air, I was almost as paranoid of them as I was as a small child when the Vietnam War was going on. We lived in Bengal, (roughly the middle of nowhere), but still there would be an occasional plane go over, that would scare me to death after sitting through newscast after newscast with my mom of planes going over and bombing villages in Vietnam. How was I to know that was only going on on the other side of the world? Unfortunately we got to find out what that was like on a much more personal level in 2001. Let's all pray that such a thing never happens again. Our menu for today includes: Smoked pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Black eye peas Brussels sprouts Steamed fried squash Garden blend rice Macaroni and cheese Rolls Our fast food is Cheeseburgers and French Fries. When I got back yesterday, it was so buried under paperwork I thought I'd have to put out an APB for it, but once I sorted some things out, there it was the whole time! I was really surprised how fast paperwork can accumulate when you're gone, though. When I'm here, it just comes in a little at a time and I don't see the whole pile at once, so it doesn't seem like so much, but yesterday there was quite an impressive pile waiting on me to deal with it. It seems like every time I get all the routine stuff done up, we come up with another special project to do, so I keep pretty busy over here. I want to wish a very happy birthday to Mary Edith Butler today. She's a real sweetheart, (probably too nice for her own good), and deserves to have a great day! I was beginning to think that the beavers had left the little pond down the hill, since I hadn't seen any sign of any of them in quite a while. I guess the last time I saw any of them was before the last time the county boys tore up their little dam. I know all the ducks are gone, now. I spoke with some neighbors the other day who told me that the last male got it when he stuck his head into their dog pen to try to steal a bite of dog food. Big mistake. And the last little female was hit by a car while I was gone to swimming class some time ago. This morning though, as I drove to work, I could see some large, dark mound alongside the road, and lo and behold, it was one of the beavers, sitting there chewing on some vegetation. I'm glad to know they're still around. I enjoy seeing their constructions go up, and occasionally getting to see them swimming around when the water is deep enough. It's good for the soul to take a minute to enjoy nature whenever you can. Our menu for today includes: BBQ pork loin Pan handler potatoes with onions and peppers Corn Baked beans Our fast food is Tacos, with Spanish Rice and Refried Beans. The sad thing is, I can barely reach the bulb with my fingertips when I'm standing on a chair, but somehow I managed. I think that should surely count for some serious stretching exercises, too. Then after I had been at work a while, I got a call from my daughter, who had missed the school bus due to falling back asleep, after me leaving the house telling her she had to get up, and her swearing that she absolutely was going to do that the very next second. It all gives me the very paranoid feeling of wanting to hide under my desk so that whatever is out there waiting to happen next won't find me to do it to. It was very sad news to find that Joyce Bills and Karen Clark's mother had passed away last week. I had never met her but had gotten to speak to her on the phone a time or two, and I think she must've been just as sweet as both Joyce and Karen are, and I know her family and friends will miss her. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Here's a heads up for tomorrow also. We will be having a trailer parked in front of the Student Union Building with a traveling chef and cooking equipment on display. We are trying to see what's out there available that we might possibly be able to use in our new building whenever it goes up. Come by and take a look and sample some of the food, and let us know what you think. Tomorrow is the day for the EOSC students and employees to go through this, and the next day we have invited several area school and hospital representatives to come and see this display. They should be able to learn something from this too. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Whole little potatoes Green peas Italian vegetables Okra Rice Baked potato bar with fixings Our fast food will be a Sandwich bar. And for dessert we have Honey Bun Cake. Come on over, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Sept. 26 Message-ID: <45194A4C.2070909@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, it's looking like a lovely day outside, and I know yesterday was. I don't know what got into my husband, maybe it was the nice weather, but he got out after work and mowed and weedeated the front and back yards. I even got out and pulled some weeds myself. That's the best way to handle some of those pesky things, since if you don't pull up the roots too, they'll come right back the minute your back is turned. We just got back from the cooking demonstration in the Blodgett trailer in front of the Student Union and were really impressed with the quality of the food that can be prepared in the combi oven that was being used. Be sure and get together with a group and go through the trailer today. Novella had them come down so we could see what kind of equipment is being used currently in order to make plans for what we will want to have in the new Student Life and Learning Center. The chef prepared grilled cheese sandwiches without any butter, french fries, a sub sandwich, fish, chicken, and french toast sticks, all the oven without adding any oils or moisture of any kind and all of them were crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. This is the way to go! Our menu for today includes: BBQ onion meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli and cheese sauce Green beans Corn Rice Pasta bar Hot rolls Our fast food is a Sandwich bar. And for dessert we have Carrot Cake and Cherry Cobbler. Come on over, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This will be done in Mitchell 110 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and today is the last day. We were admiring last years annual while we were waiting to have our pictures made. It's really a nice book showing a lot of quality work on the part of the yearbook staff. Speaking of last days, I hear that tomorrow is Thelma Foster's last day with us here at Eastern. She has worked here in the kitchen and then as dorm mom for several years and we'll all miss her wonderful personality around here. Of course she's leaving her daughter, Debbie Williams, and her son, Danny Foster, so we'll still be able to check up on her from time to time to see what she gets into now. Finally she'll have lots of time to do whatever she wants and enjoy life. Also, if any students have misplaced any textbooks, we have been left with a collection already, so have them check with us. Our menu for today includes: Fried chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn on the cob Rice Pinto beans Turnip greens Hot rolls Our fast food is Pizza. And for dessert we have Peach and Blackberry Cobblers. Come on over, but don't get wet. I just heard it's raining outside. Sept. 28 Message-ID: <451BE41F.70709@eosc.edu> Hi all, I hope you're planning on going to see "The Odd Couple" presented by our own Theatre Dept. either tonight, Saturday night, or this coming Monday night at 7:30. I know I won't get to go tonight, since this is our PAWS meeting night, but I plan on going one of the other nights. It is sure to be hysterical. (Remember, EOSC students, staff and faculty get in free! You can't beat that price!) They have switched the roles of neat Felix and sloppy Oscar into a couple of females with similar habits. I got to hear part of the radio interview with the main characters this morning on KESC and I believe they said they are just opposite to the character they were cast as. (I have to confess to being an Oscar type myself. Don't you just have better things to do than to be dusting and scrubbing all the time? Housework just makes me tired, and I don't really know if it's more physical tiredness or mental boredom.) Have you all noticed our change of decor in the Cafeteria? We're trying out a southwest theme. I keep expecting to see coyotes and rattlesnakes out there! Our menu for today includes: Round steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Carrots Rice Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food will be a Deli selection. And for dessert have some yummy Lemon Cake. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I even wore long sleeves today. Of course, I may be wishing I hadn't by the time the day is over, but this morning they definitely felt good. It should be really nice weather for the Wilburton High School Homecoming parade this afternoon and then the game against Stigler this evening. Don't forget to stop by Thelma Foster's retirement part this afternoon between 3:30 and 5:00 have some cake and punch, give her a hug and reminisce a little. This evening we'll be having the big Choctaw Nation Graduation on campus, with the banquet that all the cooks have been preparing for happening at 8:00 p.m. Tomorrow night and Mon. night there will be performances of "The Odd Couple" in Mitchell Auditorium so try to make it over to see this. Our menu for today includes: Dorito bake Oven fried potatoes Winter blend vegetables Corn Spanish rice Refried beans Pasta bar Our fast food is Pizza. And for dessert we have Banana Pudding. Come on over and eat with us before you start your weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
