Aug. 1 Message-ID: <46B09C4D.7080404@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Color me surprised when I got off work yesterday and found it had been sprinkling outside. If you've seen my office, you'll know I'm surrounded by windows, none of which actually look outside. I guess it's a good thing I'm "vertically challenged" or I'd probably feel like a bug under a microscope, but at 5'1" I don't show up above the windows until I stand up, (and then not much.) Maybe if I clicked on the "web cam" on the EOSC website, I could tell what the weather is doing without ever having to go outside. That could save some really nasty surprises sometimes! I had another surprise yesterday evening when one of my PAWS buddies came by the house with two young male dachsunds that needed fostering until we can adopt them out. Soooo...if any of you would like to adopt these sweet little guys, give them a good home, and love them and spoil them outrageously, call me. They are adorable! I also had another friend call me and tell me she had had something like a little black Corgi dropped off around her house that she would like to find the owner of. Anybody missing one of those? Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Steamed cabbage Navy beans Fried okra Baby carrots Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is Nachos. And for dessert we have Boston Cream Pie. Come on over and eat with us, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Don't forget about the auction at the Goddard Building Saturday. It looks like there will be all kinds of stuff in it. You just might find something you can't live without. And don't spend all your money there, 'cause this is the big state-wide tax free weekend on back to school clothes and shoes. I know I'll have to do some back to school shopping with my daughter this weekend. Now if I could just teach her not to wear her clothes and throw them on the floor. (Sigh.) Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Garlic rolls Steamed red potatoes Broccoli with cheese sauce Corn Fettuccine alfredo Seasoned rice Our fast food is a Chicken Patty on a Bun with French Fries. I think the "no sales tax" provision helped boost sales a lot. Every little bit helps. Surprisingly, my daughter was able to find several things that suited her, so she came home a pretty happy camper. (I was just relieved to have survived it again!) Watch out for the heat if you have to be outside any this week. We're finally going into our normal hot summer weather pattern. Maybe with it being this late in the summer, it won't last too long. A little of that awful heat goes a long way with me. Also, I would like to thank the faculty for the hard work they have done on our students' behalf, and their willingness to work with our offices to ensure student success. I would like also to clarify for those who are new on campus that we are Student Support Services--not Student Services. I have been getting a lot of mail this summer that was meant for Student Services, (some of that was for the ADA office), and I have also had several phone calls from students and parents who had confused our two offices. Student Support Services offers academic support in the form of tutoring, and yes, we do help with providing accommodations for students with disabilities by monitoring tests for those who have asked for extended time to take a test and reading those tests. We provide other services as well. We do not take their disability documentation or handle arranging the accommodations, though. That must go through the Student Services Office. For help with any issue concerning student affairs or ADA accommodations, call Dana Lewis at ext. 818 or Dr. Sally Davis at ext. 756. For help with tutoring, cultural enrichment, personal development, or just a friendly face to talk to, come to Student Support Services on the first floor of Johnston Hall. And if you find your way here and discover that you have come to the wrong office, we will help you find the right office. To reach our staff call Cindy Waldrop, Administrative Assistant, ext. 825; June Haynes, Counselor/Advisor, ext. 822; Kathy Howe, Academic Specialist, ext. 860; or me, Sue Lovett, Director, ext 823. I have already met a few of our new staff, such as Ann Owen in the Foundation Office and Gail Richey in the Business Office and if the rest of the "newbies" are that great we'll be in great shape coming into this new semester. I look forward to meeting more new employees and some of the new students soon. And Congratulations to Donna Rice on finally being "The Registrar" instead of just working in the Registrar's office. She has been and will continue to be a real asset to Eastern. I attended the Alumni Fish Fry Friday night with my husband and daughter, and it was a lot of fun. (It's actually the first one I've gone to since I've been here.) I got to visit with quite a few folks that I don't get to see on a regular basis, which I really enjoyed. I'm not really a fish eater, but man, I loved that blackberry cobbler! And I noticed that those who did eat fish must've liked it since several of them made repeated trips back up for more. All who were involved with putting it together, or helping in any manner deserve a big congratulations on a job well done and a thank you from all of us who enjoyed the event. In case anyone is wondering why we're serving on paper instead of the regular dishes, etc., it seems that our boiler has gone on to the great boiler room in the sky, while we're stuck dealing with it's remains in the basement. For sanitary reasons, we'll have to serve on paper until we can get the boiler replaced , or fixed, but if it's as old as a lot of the equipment we're looking forward to not seeing anymore after we get the new building, fixing it may be a lost cause. Does anyone know how to hook up a solar tank on the roof? In the absence of Danny Foster, John Calhoun has taken to reporting the weather. The long range weather report he gave me states that the next 6 months will be mainly sunny or cloudy, with dry and rainy spells. Winds will be from most directions. That's a big help, huh? If you don't want to eat in the Cafeteria for lunch today, you can get a free hamburger, chips and drink at the Clock Tower starting at Noon. I believe this is a "Welcome Back" event put on by Student Services, just one of the many activities and events that they sponsor for the students throughout the year. For those of you with good singing voices the "Sound Sensations", our campus vocal group, will be having auditions from 2:00 to 3:00 in Pratt 104. This is a great little group that gets to perform at lots of campus and local functions. They are real good will ambassadors for our college. And for those of you who would rather dance than sing, it looks like there will be a Street Dance this evening in front of the Field House from 9:00 to Midnight. I can't say as I blame them, to want to get out of the heat, but when they come in here and we have the premises sprayed regularly, it's suicidal. They're like the lemmings that fling themselves over a cliff or into the ocean or whatever it is that lemmings do, but they're flinging themselves into Eastern to die in droves all over the floors. I noticed the other day when the President was giving his talk at the Faculty/Staff meeting, every few seconds you could see another cricket crawling up toward the front of the room toward him. (I thought they might have been plotting to carry him off.) I know they're driving the custodians crazy. It's not like sweeping up dirt that stays in one place. It's like living litter sneaking around and crawling back into places you already cleaned. Right after you clean, and leave the room and the coast is clear, here they come out of the woodwork. If we could sell all of them for fish bait or something, we might just solve our budget crunch. If not, we may have to change our team name to the EOSC Crickets! I brought up my email yesterday and I had won 2 or 3 foreign lotteries and been willed several million dollars by several dying widows, who of course were gazillionaires and wanted me to help widows and orphans with the money. (No, sorry, I haven't collected on any of my winnings or inheritances yet, so you can't borrow any money.) Not to mention all the free stuff I was eligible for if I just participated in a promotional survey. I'm still trying to figure out how, if I'm so lucky, can I be so broke at the same time? Go figure. I may have to send out copies of these emails to the utility companies so they'll know that when I get all that wealth I'll be sure to pay them. Our menu for today includes: Fried chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Fried okra (Kim Ott's favorite food group) Corn Green beans Rolls Our fast food is Beef Fajitas. And for dessert have some luscious Peach Cobbler. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Even milder would be better. I went home yesterday and could hear the little 110 AC running as I walked up, only to get inside and discover that the heater was running too. It seems my daughter was cold yesterday morning while getting ready for school. Believe me we had a talk when she got in. I explained to her that you can either have money for food, bills, clothes and cool stuff, or you can give it all to the electric company, but not both. There is a limited supply after all. (Until all those lotteries I've won actually send me the money they've promised.) Our menu for today includes: Roast beef Mashed potatoes and gravy Rice Green beans Corn Glazed carrots Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is a Deli Selection, and Tuna Salad with Chips. And for dessert have some delicious Chocolate Delight, a cool favorite for a hot day. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... That'll be a nice change of pace for him. But it's going to seem strange seeing Allen Kendrick running around campus without him now. And a very Happy Birthday to our new registrar, Donna Rice. Getting a good promotion right before your birthday is a pretty good way to do things, isn't it? Be sure and stop by and wish Donna a wonderful day. Don't forget if you're interested in flowers and beautifying Wilburton or have some good fund raiser ideas to attend the brainstorming session this evening at 6:00 at the public library to discuss ways to raise money to pay for flowers and upkeep on the beautiful new planters on Main Street. We need lots of ideas and possibilities put out there to think about. Our menu for today includes: Lasagna Garlic bread Broccoli with cheese sauce Mashed potatoes and gravy Carrots Corn Baked potato bar Our fast food is Tacos. Aug. 24 Message-ID: <46CEF22F.5050607@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I was meeting myself coming and going last night, with two meetings back to back. I attended the flower meeting first to discuss a fundraiser to take care of the flower boxes on Main Street. I was glad to see Neil Enis, from our Horticulture program there. This should be a good partnership with us working together with the Main Street Program. Then I went on to the Latimer County Arts Council's first meeting for this school year. They're the ones who sponsor different artists, performers, etc. to come to the schools to expose the students to many various talents they might not normally get to experience. Congratulations to our new assistant registrar, Karen Clark. I'm glad they've finally drug her out of that corner she's been hiding in. Maybe I'll get to see her sometimes now. I know she will do a wonderful job in her new capacity. She's a keeper. I don't know how many of you may have noticed, but we've been trying to make various changes and improvements in our Cafeteria, putting together new menus, and changing some old ways, such as not using the bagged salad anymore, but cutting up the lettuce, etc. fresh ourselves. I'd like to encourage you to come and try us again if you haven't eaten here in a while. (If you need to stay in your office and work, we can even fix you a to-go box if necessary, and if you talk to me nice and I have time, I might even deliver it to you.) We always have a regular food line, with a meat dish, various vegetables, pastas, home-made rolls, etc., plus a fast food each day, a fresh salad bar, and soft serve ice cream, and we're closer and cost less than going to town to eat, plus what you spend here stays here. It's one way to show your support for Eastern. It's a win/win deal. Our menu for today includes: Steak fingers Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn on the cob Fried squash Pasta with tomatoes Hot rolls Our fast food today is PIZZA! It's an excellent spot to hang out and eat or get a drink for those of you who have some time to kill between classes or just need a place to cool off and sit and chat with friends. For those of you who haven't found our Coffee Shop yet, just go up the stairs in front of the East Cafeteria and take a right. The Coffee Shop has a wonderful view of quite a bit of the campus and the surrounding hills. The view alone is worth walking up the stairs for, but Susie is always friendly and makes a mean burger when you're hungry. And she really does have coffee, with a selection of flavored syrups and creamers, and cappuccino, too, if you need a quick caffeine pick-me-up. Check it out when you get a chance. I think I'd've been sleeping out on the lawn if I'd've had to stay here at night, mosquitos or not. If you're one of the chosen few who are up at some ridiculous hour of the morning tomorrow, check out the lunar eclipse starting at about 2:30 and ending about 6:30, I believe. It's one of those "once in a blue moon" occurrences that you want to try not to miss. Happy birthday to Shirley Calhoun and Carli Lay today too, as well as my husband, Gary. Aug. 28 Message-ID: <46D43D88.4080402@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, it's much cooler over here today. Everything seems to be back on track, except the dish belt and the boiler. (I guess that means that just our AC is back on track, huh? But that's such a good thing it makes everything else so much easier to put up with.) I've been told that our AC is tied in to the Administration Building, but if it is, there's a big leak or a big clog between here and there. We always seem to be a little, or a lot, warm over here and they're usually running around in sweaters with blankets standing by just in case. I was ready to go hijack some of that cool yesterday for sure. Some bad news I heard yesterday evening was confirmed this morning. My daughter had a text message from one of her classmates letting her know that Mrs. Nancy Taylor, Wilburton High School Principal, had passed away. She had been battling cancer for a while, and I just heard Doug announcing her passing on the radio. She was a wonderful woman, and will be missed greatly. (I remember being in her science class in high school and the ongoing debate about whether there were still wolves in Oklahoma, prompting some of the students to say that the initial "W" in her name, Nancy W. Taylor, stood for Wolftrack.) God, take good care of her. Our menu today includes: Meatloaf Scalloped potatoes Corn Green beans Cabbage with bacon Hot rolls Our fast food is Hot Ham and Cheese on a Bun, and French Fries. Aug. 30 Message-ID: <46D6E16D.7030406@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I've been bummed out ever since I got here and read the email from the president about us losing the radio station. I, too, had heard the rumors, among many others, that the radio station was being sold or moving away from our area. I certainly haven't heard of anyone who is happy about this move. Dougo, the great music he played, and his silliness will really be missed. It always perked up my morning to be able to come in and hear music from "back when I had a life". I had read an interview that said "it wouldn't make any difference where the station was", but that's simply not true. It was wonderful to have such easy access to the station with our announcements, ball games, local events, etc. I definitely want to wish Doug the best and thank him for all the services he has performed for all of us during his stay here at Eastern. We'll surely miss him. For all you Cappuccino drinkers, there's a new flavor in the Coffee Shop. We got in something called Vanilla Mocha Rush the other day. I had to try it, of course. It's kind of chocolately, with a hint of cinnamon, (maybe that's where the rush comes in). It may still be too hot for cappuccino now, but it'll really be good this winter to take the chill off. Our menu today includes: Turkey and dressing Mashed potatoes and gravy Candied sweet potatoes Green peas Corn Hot rolls Our fast food is a Deli Selection with chips.
