From rwatkins at eosc.edu Mon Dec 3 10:42:12 2007 From: rwatkins at eosc.edu (Rhoda Watkins) Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2007 10:42:12 -0600 Subject: [Eoscstudents] Menu for Mon. Dec. 3 Message-ID: <475431E4.6000802@eosc.edu> Happy December folks, Ho, Ho, Ho! How in the world did it get to be December already? There are a lot less shopping days til Christmas than I'm probably going to need, especially with no more bright ideas than I have of things to get for the people on my gift list. Occasionally I'll find what I think is just the right thing for just the right person, but that happens like once a season, and I blew that yesterday, so the whole rest of the Christmas shopping season is going to be spent with me feeling confused and uninspired. Candlelighting was wonderful last night. I arrived a little late, somewhere in Scene 2, but what I saw of it was a good representation of how things can snowball on you at the holidays, and we forget to make time for the simple things that make this time of year so memorable in years to come. Don't forget the reason for the season. We had a CAT-tastrophe at our house yesterday when I realized our little cat C. C. had gotten a big fish hook, still attached to the pole, hooked through one of the toes of her front paw. Ouch! I had to call a neighbor boy, (who reportedly doesn't even like cats, but was nice enough to come and help me save this one), and he brought snips to try and cut the hook. I couldn't cut it, but he managed to get it cut. All the while I was praying that the cat wouldn't bite or scratch him. That would've just sealed his dislike of cats, but she was very well behaved considering what she was going through. Maybe her good behavior will help convince him to become an ex-cat-hater. Maybe some of us PAWS folks should give Mr. Schoggins some lessons on how to deal with his new student. Dog 101: Pet, scratch, feed, repeat. If he's smart enough to know all about computers, a dog should be much simpler and a welcome change of pace. (FYI: You never boot or reboot a dog.) They're great stress relievers. They love unconditionally, and never judge you on whether you have the coolest clothes, or a big bank account, or how you look, only on how you treat them, ((and they're pretty forgiving on that, too). This may be one case where the student teaches the teacher. Mr. Schoggins, you have been dog blessed. Our menu for today includes: Chicken parmesan with pasta Mashed potatoes and gravy Green peas Corn Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is Tacos, Refried beans, Spanish Rice, and Nacho chips with Picante Sauce, and we have Yellow Cake for dessert. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have over $14,000 to distribute this semester, and only 6 people have signed up. If you know any of these students, please tell them to come to my office, room 115 in Johnston Hall, THIS WEEK to sign up. If you are a participant and were here in the spring 07 semester and your name is not on the list, contact me so I can tell you why did not qualify. It may be that I just overlooked you. Remember, $400 is the least amount you can get from Grant Aid, but you could get much more. It just depends on how many sign up for it and how many qualify. Signing up does not guarantee that a student will get the money, but NOT signing up does guarantee that the student WON'T get the money. Dec. 4 Message-ID: <47557846.9060102@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I am really feeling the chill today, even though it's not as cold as it could be this time of year. I've got the little heater in my office cranked up and am about ready to go out and keep Drexel's oven warm. It's actually supposed to be a pretty decent week, with temperatures up in the 50's and 60's for the most part and not much of a chance of rain. I guess we'd better enjoy it while we can, as soon as I warm up some. I ran across a couple of cows out on the road on the back way to McAlester this past weekend and went back to let the owner know his fence was damaged. The first time I did something like that with my daughter in the vehicle with me, she thought I was nuts, but I explained to her that someone could be killed coming up on a cow in the road like that, (not to mention, it wouldn't do the cow any good either.) Now, she either understands why it's important to do that, or she just ignores her nutty mother. That can be a very dangerous situation to have livestock out and that near the roadway. I don't blame them for getting out of the fence. If I was going to wind up as hamburger meat, I'd be heading for parts unknown as fast as my hooves could carry me, and I wouldn't let the barbed wire hit me in the rump roast on the way! They evidently didn't have that foresight. They only wanted to munch grass on the other side of the fence. Oh well, they had their chance. Our menu for today includes: Beef tips with rice Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Baby carrots Our fast food is Hot Ham and Cheese on a Bun, and have a helping of Cobbler for dessert. Dec. 5 Message-ID: <4756CB06.3050904@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well there're less than 3 weeks til Christmas so the shopping days are dwindling. It's time to dig out your Santa hat (Susie's been wearing hers all week) and all those festive Christmas sweaters that you can only wear this time of the year without looking silly, and start checking things off on your Christmas list. No, not the naughty and nice list, the "To Do" list. I have to confess, I have a lot more on my "To Do" list than I have on my "Already Done" list, as usual. It's really getting busy in the Cafeteria, with some dinner, party or meeting going on just about every day. That's just to be expected this time of year, I guess. Don't forget about the Wilburton Christmas Parade coming up this Saturday evening at 7:00 in downtown Wilburton. I'll miss it being on the radio the way it was when we had the station here on campus, but they usually have a PA set up down on Fern's corner so you can hear everyone announced as they go by. And if anyone has a pickup they wouldn't mind having in the parade for PAWS, please let me know ASAP. Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Pinto beans Turnip greens Cornbread Corn Fried okra Hot rolls Our fast food today is Corn Dogs and French Fries, and we have assorted Pies for dessert. They really put a smile on my face and a spring in my step. Kind of made me wish it would snow so we could have that white Christmas they always sing about. I had my turn to clean at the PAWS kennels yesterday evening and we really have some sweet dogs and adorable puppies out there that need families to love, and would really love a nice warm home for the winter. If you would love to get a new dog, we'd love to adopt you one. (They make great foot warmers in cold weather.) I understand they got our boiler working again yesterday evening so it should be warming up in here soon. No more frostbite when you come over. I was rather pleased to see a letter to the editor in the local paper yesterday written by a woman from Red Oak commending Mr. Paul Enis for his hard work with the students on the recent Candlelighting program here at Eastern, and praising the students for their efforts. She was rather disappointed that attendance was not better at this wonderful event. Being from here, I don't know at the people I've heard saying that there's never anything to do, it's so boring, etc. But between working here at Eastern and knowing about all the events happening here on campus, having a child in Jr. Hi/High School here in Wilburton, and getting involved in a few worthwhile local organizations, I don't find it boring at all. As a matter of fact, sometimes I have to juggle which event I can go to and which I'll have to pass on this time. Learn to watch for things that interest you and participate in them. (I know most parents, though, are usually begging for an evening off, especially if you have more than one child involved in things. There seems to be an endless round of ballgames, practices, plays, concerts, rehearsals, meetings, banquets, church functions, etc.) Find something you're interested in and at least attend the events. Support the kids. You could probably even volunteer to help. If you're a sports fan, there are a lot of games going on all the time and you could join the Booster Club. The Theater Dept. sometimes needs help with props, sets, costumes, etc. Local service organizations need members to keep doing their good work. (We can always use volunteers, donations, etc. with PAWS.) There's definitely no need to be bored just because you don't live in a big city. Just find an interest and get involved. Get out and see the Christmas parade this Saturday evening at 7:00 for starters. The next step is yours. Our menu for today includes: Smothered pork Chicken tenders Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Sweet peas Green beans Baked beans Baked potato bar Hot rolls For dessert have a luscious Brownie. (With all that to choose from, there won't be a fast food today.) Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Dec. 10 Message-ID: <475D6138.7060003@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, we really dodged a bullet with the weather situation down in this part of the state! From the looks of it on the TV weather reports, most of the rest of the state is an icy mess. I wasn't sure how bad it might get here, so I brought my bottle of de-icer and my windshield scraper in the house last night just in case I couldn't even get into the car this morning to use it. It doesn't do nearly as much good if it's frozen into the car, I've discovered. I'm afraid I fell down on the job last Friday and neglected to wish a Happy Birthday to two of our faculty members here on campus. Marilynn Duncan and Phillip Hawthorne both celebrated birthdays on Dec. 7. It was brought up at the Regent's Dinner Friday night that Ms. Duncan has taught here for 33 years. I don't know how this is possible when she only looks to be about 39. She must've been advanced for her age. I was glad to see that Eastern had a couple of participants in the Christmas parade Saturday evening. Our president, Steve Smith and wife, Jennifer were in the parade, as were our Vice President of Finance, Vic Woods and his wife. There were also some horseback riders, some floats, the Muskogee Shriners, and what looked and sounded like every fire truck in the county, even from as far away as Bengal. I'm glad a fire didn't break out anywhere at that time, or half the parade would've disappeared! Our menu for today includes: Ham Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Garden blend rice Baked potatoes Hot rolls Our fast food is Frito Chili Pies, and we have Apple Surprise Cake for dessert. Dec. 11 Message-ID: <475EB089.1050304@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It's finals week here on campus, so I'm sure everyone's schedule is scrambled. All the students are busy studying, taking tests and packing to go home for Christmas break, and all the teachers are busy preparing tests, giving them and grading papers. Here in the Cafeteria, we're busy preparing for, or recovering from, all the Christmas parties. You can tell it's Christmas when you come in to the Cafeteria first thing in the morning and it smells like baking instead of bacon. Gingerbread men were in the works this morning. It's still hard to believe how awful the weather is in most of the rest of the state when we're up close to 60. I actually think I overdressed today. I was listening to the weather report and they were giving 39 for a high today. I guess I didn't take into consideration that they were talking about it being 39 in Tulsa, not down here. Oops! I'll know better next time, maybe. Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Blackeye peas Brussel sprouts Corn Pasta Hot rolls Our fast food is Cheeseburgers and French Fries, and we have Yellow Cake with Chocolate Frosting for dessert. Dec. 12 Message-ID: <47601730.3030201@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Man, I can't believe it's less than 2 weeks til Christmas! Where did the time go? Of course, it would probably seem like it was dragging on and on if we were like those unfortunate folks up around Tulsa and OKC who are without electricity, water, heat, etc. I bet a lot of the same electric line repairmen who were down in this area, eating here in the Cafeteria with us last January are right back in Oklahoma now, helping out with this latest disaster. Boy, it just seems like one thing after the other anymore! Fires, floods, droughts, tornadoes, ice storms...but you can always count on good people to step in to help. That's truly something to be thankful for. The Candyland setup on the lawn was sure cute yesterday. It's too bad the weather didn't cooperate, but they were able to shift their operation into the East Cafeteria without much fuss. I went over and looked at the pictures with Santa that they had set out. I hope that means all those people were on the "nice" list. I'd hate for anyone to get a lump of coal in their stocking come Christmas morning. Congratulations to Maye Durant for persevering to reach her goal and get her test taken come heck or high water, (ice storm, no electricity, etc.) Now that's determination...or is it desperation? At any rate, it sounds like nothing's going to stop her on her road to success. I had my turn at the PAWS pens yesterday and although I didn't get to witness the event, I doubt that the Mud Bowl they had on campus earlier in the semester could've stirred up much more mud than that pack of pups we've got out there now. Whew! Talk about messy! I had mud splattered from head to toe by the time I got out of there! I hope you are all planning on attending the EOSC Employees Christmas Potluck Lunch Monday. The food will be great, as will the entertainment, which will feature Michael Ginsburg, the Oklahoma State Fiddle Champ, along with Kevin Priddle, and our own Rudy O'Donley. It's pretty exciting that Channel 4 out of OKC will be here to film a segment about Michael during our party, too. Dec. 14 Message-ID: <4762AFF2.5020006@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, today's the last day for finals, for better or worse. (I hope for better, of course.) That means that our students have completed one more step toward their future careers and lives. It's really kind of exciting when you think about it that way. We're all here to prepare these young people for the rest of their lives, to help them become successful, self-sufficient, productive adults. Of course, until they get there, we'll just have to overlook when they goof off, forget their meal cards, don't do their homework or lose it on the way from their dorm room, etc., and focus on the big picture, the adult they will someday become with a little help from all of us. After today, the Cafeteria will be closed until the evening of Jan. 1, when we will reopen to serve a dinner meal to those students who are enrolled in the special mini-mester class scheduled that week. (Mildred and I will be working Mon. and Tues. of next week, but no meals will be served.) I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas break, with all the things and people around that make you happy, and everyone comes back whole, happy and healthy ready to teach, learn and just enjoy reaching for and attaining their next goal at Eastern. Our menu for today includes: Hot roast beef and cheddar on a bun Broccoli and cheese soup Chips And we have Ranger Cookies for dessert. (They may not sound like much, but they're really yummy. Just ask Trisha.) Have a great break and be safe, Rhoda :-) P. S. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Betsy, Rich and Marian. Take care of yourselves. rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
