From rwatkins at eosc.edu Mon Jan 8 10:19:59 2007 From: rwatkins at eosc.edu (Rhoda Watkins) Date: Mon Jan 8 09:59:41 2007 Subject: [Eoscstudents] Menu for Mon. Jan. 8 Message-ID: <45A26F2F.5010709@eosc.edu> Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful break and are glad to be back this morning. Some of us were back last week for several days, and the faculty was back last Friday to have their conference and get back in the groove. Today the students get to start back in again, and you could really tell from the parking lots that there were plenty of folks back on campus. This break was a momentous one as far as historical occurences, what with the death of a president and the execution of a dictator. Closer to home, the Eastern family will be missing our foundation director, Maynard Phillips, thankfully not due to death, but rather a career change for him. I believe he had quite a drive to get here each day so maybe he will be doing something closer to home allowing him more free time with his family. Also missed will be the several fellows who timed their retirement with the Christmas break. I don't know who all the replacements are for them, but I know Johnny Sivic who is our new carpenter, and a really nice fellow, so be sure to make him welcome when you see him. At present he is up in the Coffee Shop, or what used to be part of the Coffee Shop, working on the new office for the architects to use while we have the new construction going on. Maybe this means it won't be too long before we start seeing the project getting underway. FYI: The Coffee Shop will be closed today due to illness. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Italian veggies Sweet peas Whole little potatoes Garden blend rice Okra Baked potato bar Hot garlic rolls Our fast food today is a Sandwich Bar with chips. And for dessert we have Yellow Cake with Chocolate Frosting. Have a great week, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My husband finally broke down and decided to do something he'd needed to do for YEARS and give up tobacco. I was really thrilled about this especially since I have asthma and can't handle very much smoke. I think what really got through to him was when he realized how much money he was actually spending on this habit. We figured we would use the money we saved to buy something big or take a neat trip somewhere. Our menu for today includes: Cheeseburger cassserole Steamed red potatoes Baby carrots Corn Rice pilaf Pasta bar Stew And for dessert, since we have the ice cream machine up and running again, we're having Ice Cream with Toppings. Sorry I'm so late getting this out, but the system "ate" my first draft. Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It's supposed to start raining probably by this evening and turn into ice, sleet and or snow in the next few days. This weekend sounds like it would be a good time to curl up with a nice cup of hot chocolate and a good book. Get your outside pets some warm bedding or let them inside when it's nasty and cold out and fill up your bird feeders, and you're all set. I still have that beautiful earring I found, waiting on the rightful owner to claim it, and we also have a couple of stray spiral notebooks and a pair of flip flops in here that need to be returned to their owners. Don't forget if you're interested in being one of the "Last of the Red Hot Lovers" auditions will be held this evening at 6:00 in Mitchell Auditorium. Auditions are open to all EOSC students, staff and faculty. And if this group is like most organizations, they can probably always use volunteer help with props, costumes, etc. And if you're into basketball check into the Tournament of Champions starting today. Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Green beans Rice California blend vegetables Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is Chicken Wraps. Jan. 16 Message-ID: <45ACF55E.2020207@eosc.edu> Hi everyone, Well, this was quite an interesting weekend and holiday with all the ice and power outages. And evidently we got off a lot lighter than McAlester did. It really pays to have a supply of candles and flashlights and batteries on hand. And the one other thing that really saved our sanity was our little wind-up radio. At least we could listen to the news on Channel 6 since it comes in on 87.7 FM. The bad thing is, they always show all the closings at the bottom of the screen, since they are so numerous, instead of reading them off like they did way back when, and the picture doesn't come in on a radio worth a darn! And then, some of the radio stations would tell you if you wanted a complete list of all the closings go to their sister TV channel or their web site. And I thought I absolutely would do that if I had either cable or electricity! Our home has central heat and air so we had to pile on an extra blanket and our pack of little dogs to keep warm. Of course, they're family, so they're always there anyway, but this time they really came in handy. For those of you who don't think dogs are good for anything, a well placed pooch makes a dandy foot warmer. For those of you who can't bear to share your bed with your furry buddy, go ahead and freeze if you want. The dog will be okay. It has a fur coat. Our menu for today includes: Smoked pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Black eye peas Brussel sprouts Cabbage Garden blend rice Pasta bar Hot rolls Our fast food is Cheeseburgers and French Fries. And we have Strawberry Trifle and Peach Cobbler for dessert, along with Lemon Jello on the salad bar. And don't forget we have a Hot Chocolate machine with both regular and sugar-free mix in it. My thermometer is showing 18 degrees and if that's not hot chocolate weather, I don't know what is. We will be open extended hours to accomplish this and still allow them plenty of working hours. By extending our hours, this will help them and should not inconvenience our regular diners. We will be opening at 6:00 a.m. for these people to eat, fixing them 150 sack lunches to take with them, and extending our closing time until 8:30 or 9:00 p.m. These extended hours are for the Emergency Workers Only. We need all students, faculty, and Dept. of Corrections students to please observe our regular opening and closing hours. This should make things run as smoothly as possible for all concerned. Between serving them breakfast and dinner and having sack lunches ready for them to take with them, we've had to pull Susie out of the Coffee Shop, (kicking and screaming), to help us down here. We're not sure how long this may take, but we will be sure and let you all know when we're able to get the Coffee Shop opened up again. Sorry for the inconvenience. It's one of those things we do "for the greater good", and you just have to bear with us. I hope you're all prepared for this weekend. They've been saying there's a really good chance of snow starting Saturday morning and continuing until Sunday afternoon or so. Be sure and stock up on all the food and other supplies you may need, including pet food. I hate to have anything else come down after what we just went through, but maybe snow will be a little more enjoyable than the major ice storm some of us are still digging out from under. I've been living like a caveman in my home and hometown due to the ice storm. Coming to campus is like coming to a different country - the difference in the weather (lack of ice everywhere) is amazing - I feel guilty for my jealousy of the luxuries Wilburton and our campus possess. I feel like a child in a candy shop, I touch a light switch and it actually comes on (that is such a novel idea - I wish they could get that process working in my own home). I hope no one has to endure what we have been enduring since late Friday night - it will make you value what you take for granted. Now for the important stuff. As you might remember this is National Stalking Awareness month. I want to catch you up on facts and information in reference to Stalking in America. Did You Know: 31% of women are stalked by a current or former intimate partner are also sexually assaulted by that partner. 73% of intimate partner stalkers verbally threatened victims with physical violence, and almost 46% of victims experienced one or more violent incidents by the stalker. The average duration of stalking is 1.8 years. If stalking involves intimate partners, the average duration of stalking increases to 2.2 years. 28% of female victims and 10% of male victims obtained a protective order. 69% of female victims and 81% of male victims had the protection order violated. Study of Stalkers - Did You Know: 78% of stalkers use more than one means of approach. Weapons are used to harm or threaten victims in 1 out of 5 cases. Almost 1/3 of Stalkers have stalked before. Intimate partner stalkers frequently approach their targets, and their behaviors escalate quickly. Stalking and Intimate Partner Femicide (murder of a woman) - Did You Know: 89% of femicide victims who had been physically abused had also been stalked in the 12 months before the murder. 79% of abused femicide victims reported stalking during the same period that they reported abuse. 54% of femicide victims reported stalking to police before they were killed by their stalkers. Did You Know: 15 states classify staling as a felony upon the first offense. 34 states classify staling as a felony upon the second offense and/or when the crime involves aggravating factors. Aggravating factors may include: possession of a deadly weapon; violation of a court order or condition of probation/parole; victims under 16; same victim as prior occasions. Tomorrow we will begin to look at 10 things you need to know about Stalking and what you need to do to protect yourself and remain safe. Remember always be mindful of your surroundings and don't dismiss the unwanted advances or attention of another person as harmless (most times they can be - lean toward safety vs. becoming a victim. Jan. 19 Message-ID: <45B0F2D1.1030404@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Where were you when the lights went out? We were over here in the Cafeteria with a roomful of electric workers, who immediately blamed it on the other electric company! Fortunately the lights were only out for a few minutes this time. Just enough to make us appreciate having them again. We scrambled around and found flashlights and lit candles. We had to shine a flashlight for a few people so they could see what they were getting to eat for breakfast. Be sure and gather up what you will need for the bad weather that's supposed to his this weekend. Don't say I didn't warn you! We're supposed to get several inches of snow, and maybe some sleet and rain, too. I noticed things were thawing out at my house yesterday when I got off work, but you could still see lots of ice up on the surrounding hills. Of course all that thawing made lots of messy, slippery mud to walk through. Yuck! But I guess it beats being in the deep freeze like we have been. I'm so very thankful that our water never froze up. Of course I've been running it quite a bit to keep it from freezing, so no telling what my bill will be! Our menu for today includes: Fried chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Sweet peas Macaroni and cheese Hot rolls Our fast food is Turkey Soup. And for dessert we have German Chocolate Cake. Have a great weekend but be careful, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Stalking is a crime. Stalking is a course of conduct directed at a specific person that places a reasonable person in fear for her or his safety. It is against the law in every state. Stalking across state lines or in federal territories is illegal under federal law. 2. Many people are Stalked. 1 in 12 women and 1 in 45 men will be stalked in their lifetimes. 1.4 million people are stalked every year in the United States. 3. Stalking can be very dangerous. 76 percent of women killed by their intimate partners were stalked by these partners before they were killed. All stalkers should be considered unpredictable and very dangerous. 4. Stalking is harmful and intrusive. Stalking victims often lose time from work or never return to work, and some even relocate to regain a sense of safety. Many suffer from anxiety, insomnia, and severe depression as a result of being stalked. 5. Anyone can be stalked - not just celebrities. The vast majority of stalking victims are ordinary people. Furthermore, most stalkers are not strangers, but are known by their victim. MORE tips to come. Weather permitting I will be at a mandated grant conference in Washington, DC next week, but I will email tips from there. Stay safe and WARM and have a great weekend. Jan. 22 Message-ID: <45B4DE5A.8080105@eosc.edu> Hi everyone, I trust you all had a wonderful weekend. Mine wasn't looking too bright at the start, literally. When I got home Friday, my electricity was off again, and the house was getting chilly, but it was only a couple of hours til they had us lit up again and ready for nighttime. (I was really impressed since I'd heard rumors that it might be up to three days before we got our electricity back on.) You really don't realize what a luxury and a blessing having electricity is until it goes out on you for a while. And how much you depend on being able to walk into a dark room, flip a switch and immediately be able to see! I've discovered that even when the electricity is off, I'm still in the habit of walking in and flipping that light switch! It's kind of like when your phone doesn't work, the first thing you want to do is call someone and tell them to come and fix it. We really are creatures of habit. Thankfully the big snowstorm that they were predicted veered north of us and all we got was rain. Isn't that something? Someone asked me if I had ordered all that and I said, "Yeah, I sure did...back in July!" I guess it was on backorder. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Pasta bar Garlic bread Rice Hot rolls Our fast food is Hamburgers and French Fries. And for dessert we have a choice of either Apple or Cherry Cobbler. Don't forget , you can top it off with some ice cream! Come and get it! Stalking can occur during a relationship, after a relationship, or in the absence of a relationship. Stalking often begins during a relationship. Stalkers may keep the victim under surveillance or threaten her or him. Others begin Stalking after the victim has ended the relationship, and the stalker feels desperate to maintain or regain control. Still others become fixated on a victim without ever having had any relationship with the person. All forms of stalking are unpredictable, and all should be considered dangerous. 7. Technology can be used to stalk. Although newly-developed technology enhances our lives, it can also empower criminals. Cell phones, computers, and surveillance equipment are just some of the technologies stalkers now use. 8. An effective response to stalking includes the entire community. Police, prosecutors, advocates, educators, reporters, neighbors...everyone can and should play a part in stopping stalking. Working together, we can make victims safer. 9. You can make a difference. Stop by the Campus Violence Prevention Project Office on the first floor of Miller Hall for additional information and ways to can make a difference. 10. Help is available. If you or someone you know is being stalked, call 918-448-2365 for campus law enforcement or 911. Remember we have kits available in the Campus Violence office that will aid law enforcement in making arrests in cases of stalking. Let me know if I can help. Additional information will be forthcoming. Have a great day. On the bright side, the days are getting longer, with a little more daylight each day now. Of course today it's cold daylight, but at least it's not wet! And it's not really supposed to be too bad all week. Up in the 40's, and maybe even 50's later in the week. I noticed there was a nice article about us feeding the electric workers on our Eastern website, with a picture of a couple of the workers, and another picture of Susie and Linda and a boat load of sack lunches. You might want to check that out if you're interested. (And yes, with Susie down here, that means the Coffee Shop is still closed. I'll be sure and let you know when we're able to turn her loose to reopen it.) I got a wild notion yesterday and grabbed my daughter and we went downtown and joined Curves. Of course we have yet to do any exercises, but I'm hoping you'll be seeing less of me soon. Destiny was really excited about doing this. She's not overweight, but like most teenage girls, she thinks she is sometimes, and I figured it would do her good to do some physical activity and build a little muscle. (That way she can lift those big bags of dog food, chicken feed, etc. for me.) Then it gets colder and who knows what may fall on us. Let's hope it's not much of anything. Friday evening don't forget to go to the performance at the Liberty Theatre in Hartshorne, featuring Jared Wagner, who has been seen on TV in "America's Most Talented Kid" and in the movie "Home of the Brave". Our own local boy, Kyle Williams, will be a special guest during this performance, also. Tickets are available on campus at the radio station in Baker Hall for $7.50. This should be a wonderful night of family entertainment. And if you don't have lunch plans on Sunday the 28th, there will be a Chili and Bean Dinner at the Red Oak School Cafeteria to raise money for the Latimer County Arts Council so that they can continue to bring talented artists and performers to all our county schools. There is not a lot of opportunity in this area for local children to see or hear poets, painters, writers, magicians, musicians, and other performers such as the Arts Council can bring to this area, and it is a wonderfully enriching experience for our children. The dinner, sponsored by the Red Oak Masonic Lodge, will feature chili, beans, all the fixin's and a variety of homemade desserts, and will be served from 11:00 a.m. til 2:00 p.m. Please come on out and support this worthy cause, and tell a friend, too. The electric workers tell me they're making lots of progress, so their numbers should start dwindling soon. I have never seen so many sack lunches in my life as I have this week! I'm about to have to start inventory over here and we have bread stacked over my head, (yes, I know that's not very high, but it is a lot of bread anyway), so I think I'll try to save that for last and hope we've used a lot of it before I have to count it all! I've got my little to do list going for after work so that I'll remember to get the Library key so we can get in for our PAWS meeting this evening. If anyone is interested in joining us, our meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. at the public library on West Ada street, just up from Latimer State Bank. The predictions are pretty good for something coming down on us today though, so be prepared. Sometime this evening I'm going to have to call my Aunt Alma in Indiana and wish her a happy birthday. I believe she holds the family record for making it to 105 this year. My grandmother, Aunt Alma's mother, lived to be 99 years and one month, and when she was still alive, she really wanted to make it to 100. Aunt Alma said she told Granny that she didn't want to live that long. I hope she's gotten over that notion, since she's beaten that by five years, and is still sharp as a tack. She's not so good physically, being in a wheelchair after breaking a hip, but with someone to get behind her and push, she can still enjoy life. One of her granddaughter's took her to one of the casino boats near where she lives for her 100th birthday, and informed those in charge that they had a lady celebrating her 100th birthday on board. They announced that they had a special guest with them that day from the town Aunt Alma is from, and Aunt Alma started looking around to see if she knew who it was. Imagine her surprise when she found out that she was the special guest. May we all be so blessed.
