May 1 Message-ID: <4637527D.7000100@eosc.edu> Hi again folks, I made a chance discovery the other day that really restored my faith in people. I ran into a friend in the Public Library and we walked out together and noticed a pile of debris in the yard of the old church across the street. (It is actually one of the first, if not the first black churches in Oklahoma, dating back to 1903.) My friend, Suzee, mentioned having gone in there before to see what it was like and was disturbed that vandals had taken over and what they hadn't torn up they had spray painted filth and graffiti on. We walked over to see what condition it was in now, and were very surprised to see all the pews sitting upright and a lot of rubbish cleared away. We then discovered a young man in the back working away toward restoring this historical building with intentions of eventually holding church services in it again, as the Mt. Olive Non-Denominational Church. His name is Mark Dominguez and he has undertaken quite a job all on his own with just the help of his wife, Mary, and a friend. If anyone has spare time, energy or resources that could be utilized in this effort, I'm sure he would be grateful for the help. If you're interested in helping, just go by there and talk with this young couple. If nothing else, you'll make some new friends. Our menu for today includes: Smoked pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Oriental blend vegetables Pasta bar Hot rolls Our fast food is Macaroni and Cheese with Polish Sausage. And for dessert, have some Bread Pudding or Peach Cobbler. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I really hope I get to come to it, but I have a prior appointment that may run me too late. My husband, who has always had trouble with his teeth, recently broke out a tooth--a front tooth--and no he's not too thrilled about running around like that, so he's decided it's time to have them all pulled and get "pocket teeth". That's why I get to be the designated driver to bring him back home when he's too loopy with pain killer to drive himself. I am really going to try to make it back to get to say goodbye to some of the kids I've gotten to know over the last couple of years at breakfast on Mondays and Wednesdays, my mornings "out front". I also want to be there for cousin Krystal Mathews who is finally going to graduate, too. While it's sad to lose them, it's really exciting thinking about all the potential that will go pouring out into the world when this class finally achieves what it's been working for for two long years. What will they do with all their knowledge? Who will they become? Will they remember with fondness their days at Eastern? I certainly hope so. Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Roast beef Mashed potatoes and gravy Pinto beans Cornbread Corn on the cob Baby carrots Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is PIZZA. And for dessert mix it up making your own Ice Cream Concoction with our variety of toppings. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I figured I'd better get this message out before someone possibly graduates and moves off without their shirt. It looks like the day hasn't quite made up it's mind what it wants to do yet. It's warm, but cloudy, and has sprinkled off and on a few times this morning, but the forecast for the next few days is pretty warm and mostly sunny, surprisingly. It seems like the weather has finally reversed itself from the way it usually does things, raining on our weekends and being so pretty, trying to tempt us into playing hooky when we are supposed to be at work and school. Of course, it was a historical day here on campus, what with the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building, and I had to miss it, but I did get to make it to graduation and congratulate some of the students on a job well done as they head off out into the world. I was totally surprised to see the announcement that Estella Bennett-Mask will be retiring. I personally know she's been here a long time, because once, long ago, I was one of her students, but she still looks just the same, definitely not like someone ready to go into retirement! I wish I'd known that secret about twenty years (and several pounds) ago myself. Everyone I asked if they were ready for finals this morning told me the same thing. They're ready for them to be over! I saw a lot of last minute studying going on at breakfast this morning, so that should help some of the students feel a bit better prepared. Best of luck to all of you! It's rained so much already I could almost swear my toes are beginning to web, and according to the weather report there's a chance or more rain every day this week. You know how kids are when it comes to playing in water. My daughter, even though she's at the age where she thinks she's grown and is way too cool when it comes to most things, somehow becomes about 3 years old again when it comes to splashing and playing in the water. She and her cousins were playing in the big ditch in front of their house yesterday and she gave her cell phone a near death experience. She had waded in knee deep, and without thinking about the cell phone being in her pocket, just went all in and didn't realize she was drowning her most prized possession. Fortunately, it wasn't so bad that it couldn't be revived. This morning she opened it up and it came back to life. I could already tell yesterday that campus was a lot less populated than it had been. This morning, it was almost deserted in comparison to the usual packed parking lots of the school year. All that's left is the semester's collection of junk food containers and wrappers that have fallen from the students' vehicles as they sped off to enjoy their summer. I saw "Goodbye Eastern" shoepolished on someone's windshield yesterday. I hope all the ones that are leaving us for good have wonderful lives and those that we will see again in the fall have great summers and come back ready to learn. Ours was pretty busy, what with going to see my Mom here in town and then down to Buffalo Valley to see all Gary's folks. As I was getting in my car yesterday, I suddenly noticed that the muddy "cat tracks" (just part of the territory when you have cats, and sometimes even a good quick identification tool if you have a run of the mill looking vehicle, and yours is the only one with identifying paw prints on it) I thought I had on my vehicle were actually raccoon tracks! It looked like they had been having a dance on my car. Evidently, it's been getting wild out in the country! No wonder the dogs bark like crazy at night when I don't hear anything. That would be considerably more difficult. Supposedly this will send a message to "big oil" that we're mad and we're not going to take paying their high prices anymore, but when you think about it what choice do we really have, as unprepared as we are? Until we find some better alternatives, they've got us pretty much right where they want us. I think we should look into the possibility of using used cooking oil as a fuel. Then we'd have a corner on the market over here. It might even solve our budget crisis and I've heard the exhaust smells just like French Fries cooking. I'm still not ready to have a teenager, much less one who's into their second year of it! Unbelievable! She's now at that age when she doesn't want presents for her birthday anymore. Just give her the money and take her shopping, preferably to the mall, any mall. She's got her own specific opinions on what she likes and wants and what she doesn't, most of which I just don't get, but I love her anyway. It was much easier when she was little and I could just buy cute little girl clothes and dress her in them and she was a happy camper. But there's a commercial on TV that makes a good point saying what goes in the body is more important than what goes on it anyway. How true! We will be serving lunch in the East Cafeteria today due to Jerald and Roy working on the floors in the West Cafeteria. We will notify everyone when this is finished and we can serve in the regular area once again. Mayfest is going on up in Tulsa this weekend and the Italian Festival is happening in McAlester, so there's plenty to get out and go do. If nothing else just get out and take a walk. Judging by what I was hearing, I thought we had attracted a whole bevy of different birds to our place recently. When I paid a little more attention I found that they all seemed to be sitting in the same tree. It didn't take me long then to figure out that what we had attracted was a very talented mockingbird and he was responsible for all the different songs and noises I was hearing. I've seen him out front in our mimosa tree which I had thought was dead for a while, but it was apparently just in shock due to the late freeze and now seems to be coming out of it. Maybe we'll have some of those lovely, fragrant pink blooms after all. Maybe our mocker will find a mate and make a nest there and then we'll have a whole family of them to entertain us with their repertoire of songs. I actually think I can deal with this better than I could the drought we had become so resigned to and the awful heat we could be having. There is a down side to all the rain though. More mosquitos hatching out and more mowing. We can't win 'em all, I guess. Our menu for today includes: Steak fingers Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Turnip greens Lima beans Hot rolls Our fast food is Burritos with Chili and Cheese Sauce. And for dessert have a delicious piece of Cherry Dump Cake. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I don't even have any plans, but am really looking forward to several days in a row of not having to hear the alarm clock going off at 5:00 a.m., (and Sadie, our chihuahua going off right afterward because she can't stand the sound of the alarm clock either). It sure makes the week seem like it's dragging on forever. Can this possibly be only Wednesday? Unbelievable! Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Chicken noodle soup Hot rolls And for dessert try a piece of Cherry Cake with Cream Cheese Icing. Yummy! Have a great week, (and I hope it goes by quickly for you), Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... May 24 Message-ID: <4655AE21.1070002@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Thought I'd better let everyone know that the Cafeteria will be closed this evening, and at breakfast and lunch tomorrow (Fri.). We will be open for dinner tomorrow and open all day Saturday, then closed again all day Sunday. Any students staying on campus that intended to eat in the Cafeteria during any of these closed times will need to stop by my office before 3:00 today and pick up vouchers for any meals they will be missing. These vouchers can be taken to either Nixon's BBQ, Adelita's or Breezes and used. (Since Nixon's is closed on Sundays, he has made arrangements with the Choctaw Travel Plaza to honor the vouchers on Sundays.) This is my first time using the voucher system and I hope we can get everything going smoothly get everyone fed with as little confusion as possible. (I'm usually the one who gets the most confused of all and I don't need that!) I hope a lot of you participated in the Casual Dress Day to benefit the Relay for Life. It's for a really good cause, with the money going to help fight cancer. And I think this sticker idea could really catch on. I need several different ones, myself. Some days I need one that says, "Everything else was dirty", or "This is all that fits". Maybe even one that says, "This is Oklahoma and this is how we dress." Soon we'll probably all need one that says, "It's summer time and it's too hot to wear real clothes." I'm not looking forward to that! Our menu for today includes: Lasagna Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Our fast food is Sloppy Joes and Chips. And for dessert have a piece of Lemon Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. Delicious! Have a really great long weekend, Rhoda :-) P. S. I forgot to mention that yesterday was Alan Moss's birthday. He's trying to catch up with Danny and me in age, but I don't think it's going to happen. rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... May 29 Message-ID: <465C43A7.3070606@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you had a really wonderful long weekend. I enjoyed mine. Got plenty of rest, though not all when I should have. I have to confess to being somewhat nocturnal when left to my own schedule. I am N.A.M.P. (Not A Morning Person.) I was really relieved that the weather didn't get terribly hot, (apologies to those of you who wanted lots of sunshine for outdoor activities. Even though it was kind of dreary and rainy, my husband did manage to get in several fishing trips.) It's good to be back at work though. We've got our first batch of Upward Bound kids in, so the Summer Camp season is officially kicked off. Soon we'll be having Gear Up and Aggie Camp, and all the rest. Don't forget to save your 2 liter soda bottles for Helen Scott and Linda Morgan. Big plans are in the work for the Gear Up kids to make "Bottle Rockets", (no, not the illegal fireworks kind. They're going to have to explain to me just how they make these.) We've got a really great menu for you today (some of my favorites): Chicken Parmesan with Red Sauce Scalloped potatoes Garden blend rice Baby carrots Sweet peas Hot rolls Our fast food is Corn Dogs and French Fries. And for dessert try a piece of Cherry Nut Cake. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It's hard to believe we're this close to the end of May and the beginning of June with the weather we've been having. I'm certainly not complaining, though. I'm not a big fan of weather that's too hot or too cold, but when it's too cold you can bundle up. Our menu for today includes: Lasagna Steamed red potatoes Corn on the cob Fried okra Baked potato bar Garlic bread Our fast food is Barbecue Smoked Sausage on a Bun with Chips. May the last Message-ID: <465EE7FF.5040704@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I've been a little concerned about our radio station this morning. I've been hearing Doug-O announce that as of tomorrow it will no longer be KESC. The station will remain here on campus and the setting on the dial will be the same, but the FCC has changed the call letters to KOCD. What's up with that? I always liked it being KESC. It kind of tied in well with EOSC. Now what? Will it become the Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder radio station? Or maybe just the station formerly known as KESC. I don't know why the FCC wanted to do that to us. We don't go around messing with their initials. (We might let them know that we're going to change their letters to DODI, or the Dept. of Dumb Ideas after this.) Be sure and try to make it to the welcome reception for our new president, Dr. Smith and his family, today from 4:30 to 6:00 at the Gallery downtown, across from Adelita's. It should be a good opportunity to get to know him a little better and learn more about his plans for Eastern. Also, the Cafeteria will be closed this evening, Friday evening, Sat. at lunch and dinner, and all day Sunday. If you need vouchers for these meals, please try to come in and get them today, as the offices will be closed tomorrow. Our menu for today includes: Pork tenderloin Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Baked beans Macaroni and cheese Hot rolls Our fast food is Tacos, Spanish Rice and Refried Beans. And for dessert try some Bread Pudding. Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) P. S. I'll be getting to help my Mom celebrate her 90th birthday on Sunday, so that will be very memorable. rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
