Nov. 1 Message-ID: <4729F97A.9070700@eosc.edu> Happy November everyone, It's hard to believe that yesterday was Halloween as warm as it was. I wore my cap and gown as a costume, but had to lose it during the day, before I had a heat stroke. (I realized yesterday that that is probably, no definitely, the only piece of clothing I have that is that old that still fits. Those graduation robes are very forgiving.) I did get to put it on late yesterday evening as it began to cloud up and cool off, and it felt pretty good then. The Halloween Carnival was a great success with all kinds of activities and hundred of people in attendance. The dunk tank, pie in the face booth, velcro wall, and other inflatables were big hits with everyone, and the International Students "Pork on a Stick" and Green Tea booth went over really well, also. I had to laugh when I saw Brenton Duncan (coming from the pie in the face booth maybe?) looking like a huge bird had just flown over and deposited something on his head. I think he went to the dunk tank then hoping to get dunked so he could clean up. Even Dr. Smith took a few pies in the face for the team, as did Sally Davis, Linda Enis and several other faculty and staff members. Here's hoping that this will become an annual event and get bigger and better every year. Many congratulations to everyone who had a part in making this the great success that it was. While the carnival was a massive undertaking, it is by no means the last event in this busy week. This afternoon at 2:00 we will have the Native American Celebration in the Ballroom, at 6:00 and 8:00 there will be the women's and men's basketball games against Paris, I believe, and if you can hang in there that long, tonight at 10:00 there will be a comedy/hypnotist here in Mitchell Auditorium. I have seen this twice since I've been here and it is always hysterical. Friday there will be a pep rally to support our teams at noon at the field house, and that evening at 6:30 at Pete's Place in Krebs, there will be the Hall of Fame Induction Dinner honoring Bill Cole, former president of East Central University in Ada. Finally, Saturday will kick off early with the Hilltopper's Breakfast at 8:30 in the President's Dining Room, then the first EOSC Homecoming Parade in years on Main Street, followed by an Alumni Meeting in the Coffee Shop. After that there will be a tailgate party on campus with the Aggie Club cooking hamburgers and hot dogs for all comers from 11:30 to 1:30, (remember the Cafeteria will be closed so that everyone can eat at the Tailgate Party), and the Homecoming ball games starting at 1:00 (women's) and 3:00 (men's) and coronation of the new EOSC Homecoming King and Queen. The last Homecoming activity for this year will be the Homecoming Dance from 9:00 to midnight in the Ballroom. Whew, is that a lot of stuff or what? Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Steamed red potatoes Broccoli with cheese sauce Green beans Seasoned rice Baby carrots Garlic rolls Baked potato bar Our fast food is Cheeseburgers and French Fries, and we're having that wonderful Peaches and Cream Cake for dessert. (You've got to try some of that stuff!) And since I will be off tomorrow, I'll go ahead and give Friday's lunch menu also: Fish Crispy cube potatoes Corn on the cob Pinto beans Winter blend vegetables with cheese sauce Corn bread or rolls Pasta bar And the fast food will be Chicken Patty on a Bun and Peach Cobbler for dessert. Nov. 6 Message-ID: <47308113.2030903@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, I'm back in the saddle again after being under the weather most of the weekend and yesterday. I started feeling a little sneezy and sniffly Thursday evening and it just progressed from there. I had planned on going to the Hall of Fame Induction Dinner Friday evening, but was way too miserable by then. I did get to go to town for a few minutes Saturday morning just to see the Homecoming Parade, but then went right back home and back to bed. I haven't even heard how the games went or who got Homecoming King and Queen. Somebody's going to have to fill me in. I'm not quite used to the time change yet. I miss the extra daylight in the evenings already. And I've been hearing talk of upcoming frosts and freezes on the weather report. Better buy some de-icer before it's all gone. And make sure and bring in your tender plants and pets, or at least have them some cozy bedding put out where they can snuggle in it and not want to get under vehicles or in the motors. I thought with Homecoming being over with I wouldn't have missed anything very important on campus by being gone yesterday, but I saw an email saying that our friendly neighborhood DJ, Dougo, is now our new mail clerk. Welcome back to campus, Doug. We're glad to have you back around. Now if we can just get you set up to play us some good music everything will be great. Be sure and wish a very happy birthday to one of EOSC's real sweethearts, Ruth Brelsford. Have a terrific birthday, Ruth! Nov. 7 Message-ID: <4731DD36.7030401@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, there was officially frost on the pumpkin this morning as the saying goes, or on my windshield, to be more accurate. I was glad I had thought to buy some de-icer this past weekend. I did begin to wish I'd gotten the aerosol kind instead of the pump kind when I couldn't get the nozzle to turn with my cold fingers and got hold of it with my teeth to do it and found out that de-icer does not taste good. On the upside though, it seems to evaporate quickly. And so far it's not toxic. Congratulations to the Duncan Family on their long awaited new arrival, Brevyn Emyr. I understand his arrival had to be scheduled around basketball season, but since it was hurried up instead of postponed, I don't think Elizabeth probably minded too much. It's looking like this weekend may be a good one for fall foliage trips, like going over Talimena Drive. Maybe not so good where the gas prices are concerned, though. You may have to spend a lot of green in your search to see the beautiful reds, oranges and yellows. I am falling behind on Happy Birthday wishes and need to catch up. Recent birthdays include Leon Hanebrink on Oct. 30, Paula Ogden on Nov. 1, and Viki Vogt on Nov. 4. I hope they all enjoyed wonderful celebrations and will each have a wonderful year to come. Nov. 8 Message-ID: <473333DD.2010807@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, it wasn't as cold this morning. I didn't have frost on my windshield to spray and scrape off like yesterday. It's a good thing too, since when I went out to take my turn at the PAWS pens yesterday, the little beagle I had rescued from the side of the highway a couple of weeks ago had multiplied by 6. She is now the proud mother of 6 new little puppies. One of our PAWS ladies had taken a soft new blanket out there for the mother before she delivered and they are all snuggled up together on it. They may be ready to find homes by Christmas, but adorable as they are, a puppy is not a good Christmas gift for someone who is unprepared for the responsibility that they involve. Be sure and make plans this weekend to attend the "Petal Pushers" Fundraising event at the Goldberg and Joseph Heritage Park this Saturday from 3:00 to 6:00. There will be a silent auction of all manner of wonderful donated items, and a "Basket Auction" to raise money to replenish the flowers and plants in the downtown planters. The Main Street program, various downtown merchants and others have provided the materials for these, but they need your help to keep them beautiful from season to season and year to year. Everyone is welcome to come down and visit, browse, have some refreshments with us and buy or donate to the cause. A drive down Main Street will show you just how worthwhile a cause this is to support. And you don't want to miss the "Flower Fashion Contest" with the contestants dressed to the hilt in their most flowery finery. See you there. Our menu for today includes: Turkey pot roast Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Rice Pasta bar Hot rolls Our fast food is Hamburgers and French Fries, and for dessert have a helping of Banana Pudding. What a nice thought as I'm sitting here still cold and still trying to wake up. I had my first session of Datatel training the other day, though I know many of you have been going for quite some time now. From what I could tell, it looks like my billing process will be pretty simple, and somewhat easier than the system we use now. I was surprised and pretty encouraged by what I saw of it. Don't forget to come out for the Petal Pushers Fundraiser Saturday from 3:00 to 6:00 at the Goldberg and Joseph Heritage Park and help keep Main Street beautiful. Keep your calendar open next Thursday Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m. to come and see "Twinderella", a hilarious retelling of the story of Cinderella and her twin brother Bob, put on by the EOSC theatre dept., directed by the very talented Dottie Minshall, and produced by our new Theater Instructor, Melissa Heath-Lee. Also, as of today, the Cafeteria will begin extending our hours of operation at lunch until 1:45 every day in order to accomodate some of the later classes. I don't think it's really supposed to get here til Wednesday, but all this wind is letting us know it's on the way. I can't believe I haven't gotten to hear any geese flying south yet this fall. That's one of my very favorite things to hear, the geese headed south for the winter. Maybe before this front hits, some more will come over for me. Happy Birthday wishes go out to Kay Langham, who had a birthday yesterday, and Anita Hernandez, who is celebrating her big day today. I hope they both enjoy themselves immensely. This will be a short week on campus with Friday being declared a state holiday in honor of our Oklahoma Centennial. I remember my Granny telling about when she came to Indian Territory from Indiana as a young, married woman and was surprised to find that the Indians here dressed just like anyone else. (I think she was expecting headdresses or loincloths or something, so it was kind of disappointing for her I suppose.) She lived to be 99 years and 1 month, so she saw a lot of changes in her lifetime, but that was one she missed out on. Don't forget we'll have our Thanksgiving Dinner this Wednesday, so make plans to come over for the feast. My mouth is watering already! I can almost smell the dressing! The Ladies faced #1 ranked Seward Community College, out of Liberal, KS. The Lady Mountaineers came out pressuring in a man-to-man defense and finishing on the offensive end. Just think of all the changes that have taken place in that time, and all the ones that will take place in the next 100 years! And next year, Eastern will celebrate it's centennial, too! It's amazing to think how long this college has been here and all the changes that have taken place here, as well as in the whole state, in the past century. If you get some spare time, go visit Kim Pendergraft in the Library Building, and take a look at the Eastern Archives. She has collected a lot of Eastern's history, in the form of old clippings, yearbooks, memorabilia and various other forms, over there and is glad to show it off to anyone who is interested. Don't forget to attend the Mentor Training scheduled for today from 3:00 to 5:00 in the Ballroom today. There are a lot of children out there who would really benefit from having a little help with schoolwork and a positive role model to look up to. Yesterday I proclaimed it to be Wed. and everyone must've thought it was a good idea, because nobody called or emailed to correct me. (I think I just wanted to get the week over with a little quicker.) I'm sure some people noticed my error, but whether they kept quiet out of politeness or because they themselves were confused too (and maybe hoped I was right), I don't know. In the REAL WORLD, today is Wednesday and we're having our THANKSGIVING DINNER here in the Cafeteria today, so if you're not having to go to the school and eat with your children or something else important, come over and eat with us. We'd be thankful to have you and you'll get a great, full meal for not much money. I also found out belatedly yesterday that it was Doug Simm's birthday. He wouldn't say exactly how many candles would be on his cake, but I suspect it is somewhere near my number, (fortunately for him, he doesn't look it). I hope he enjoyed his big day, even though he had to work. And today Mimi Kelley is celebrating her big day. I hope she has a very enjoyable day as well and gets lots of good "loot". I got to see little Brevyn Duncan and Mom Elizabeth yesterday, due to being in the right place at the right time. He is sure a little cutie and Elizabeth looks really great. You'd never know she just had her third child. I can think back to the beginning of our week off and it seems like a long time ago, but when the alarm went off this morning, it seemed as if the week had just flown by. It was a full week, though. My daughter and I came out to the evening performance of "Twinderella" and just loved it. All the kids did a great job and you can tell they really enjoy getting those laughs from the audience. Our state turned 100 on Friday the 16th, and on Mon. the 19th, our new Alco store opened locally and a lot of folks came out to help them celebrate and do some shopping and get some Christmas gift ideas. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. We had two of them; one with my husband's folks in Buffalo Valley and one with my mom here in town. The weather sure went through an extreme change while we were off. It seemed like we left at the end of summer and now it seems like we're officially into fall heading rapidly into winter. It's definitely time to shuffle the closet and dig out all the warmer clothes, and be figuring out where you stored the Christmas decorations, start getting ready to send Christmas cards and do some shopping. Christmas will be upon us and the semester will be over before we know it. I hate that we're going to be losing our wonderful work-study guy, Yuichi Sato. I believe he will be heading back to Japan when this semester is completed. He will definitely be missed around here, but we'll still have 'Cilo to pick on. Slightly belated birthday wishes go out to Lea Weaver for last Friday the 23rd, and to our own Charlie Langford for last Saturday the 24th. I hope they both had a ball, but not so much that they can't make it on in to work today! Nov. 27 Message-ID: <474C3C3F.9020200@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I was a little bit worried yesterday. My car was acting funny yesterday morning. All the indicator lights were lit up and stayed lit up all the way to work, even the "Passenger Door Ajar" one after I had gone around and slammed all my doors with no result. By yesterday afternoon when I got off work, it was back to normal. Maybe it was just too early and too cold for it and it was protesting. Then when I was in my living room yesterday evening, I kept hearing a funny clicking sort of sound coming from down the hall or somewhere close enough to make me think it was coming from my heating unit. (Not a good thought to have just as it starts to get cold.) I walked over by it and stood listening for a minute or so before I decided that probably wasn't what it was and walked on down the hall into the bedroom. I had just filled up my birdfeeders the day before and the first thing I noticed was a beautiful red male cardinal sitting on top of the feeder outside my bedroom window. Then I noticed that some of our "winter guests ", (the ladybugs that come and live with us in the winter), had gotten active and started crawling around on the bedroom window. The next thing I knew, that crazy kamikaze cardinal was flying into the window! I don't know if he was flying at his own reflection, (I've heard of them doing that, trying to scare off the "other bird"), or if he was trying to get at the ladybugs that were crawling on the inside of the window! I was glad my mystery was solved in such a harmless manner. (At least if he doesn't keep doing it today and knock himself silly and one of the cats catches him!) I noticed on our website that Candlelighting will be this Sunday at 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium. I have seen several performances by our music groups since I've started working here and they are well worth coming to. (And you can't beat the price...FREE!) Come out and hear our wonderful student performers celebrating the Christmas season. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Scalloped potatoes Corn Green beans Sauerkraut and weiners Hot rolls Our fast food is Hot Ham and Cheese on a Bun and try a taste of the tropics with a helping of Coconut Crunch for dessert. Have a great day, (I'm going to cause it's my birthday!) Rhoda ;-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I also found out today that Barbara Gilbertson and I share a birthday. I hope she had a great one too. I did. You all made me feel really special. Thanks so much! And a happy late birthday to my birthday twin, Barbara. I'm really looking forward to the Christmas Pot Luck. Sometimes when you have a regular meal with a set menu, it doesn't suit everyone, but this way, there should be plenty of food and a great variety to choose from...something for everyone! And I hope everyone will attend. We've started "decking the halls" here in the Cafeteria, to help get everyone in the Christmas mood. I'm starting to get there myself. Our menu for today includes: Tenderized steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli with rice casserole Black eyed peas Corn Fried squash Hot rolls Our fast food today is Frito Chili Pies with Toppings, and we have Apricot Cobbler for dessert. Nov. 29 Message-ID: <474EE20D.6060806@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we've almost made it through another week and that brings us just a little closer to December, and the end of the semester and Christmas. I'm not ready! How do these people do it that already have their shopping done, (or even an idea of what they want to shop for), and already have their cards ready to mail? Even if they told me their secret, I am just not wired that way. I'll still be rushing around at the last minute trying to get last minute gifts, etc. I'm starting to see lots of Christmas decorations and lights around in town, in stores and at houses. Mike Mooney was faithfully decorating all the lamp posts the other day when I went through town to make Main Street look festive. I believe the annual Christmas Bazaar is this weekend at the Choctaw Center on Centerpoint Road and don't forget about Candlelighting this Sunday. As the weather takes a decidedly colder turn, don't forget to bring your outside pets in, or at least provide them with warm bedding and shelter. You wouldn't like to sleep outside in the cold and rain would you? Even with a fur coat, it wouldn't be any fun at all. It's best to provide dogs with a house, (preferably yours), but one of their own will do. Put a blanket or some cedar chips or straw, (not hay which can promote mange and other problems when it gets wet) in for warmth. Cats need a warm bed too, as they can really get into trouble in the cold weather when they're searching for a warm spot and they think they've found one in your car motor. Providing them with their own snug spot can save much heartache later on. And when it gets really cold, be sure and break the ice on their water. It's horrible to be thirsty and not be able to get a drink because you can't break the ice on top. Please don't forget your furry friends. They depend on you the way a child would, and some of them behave better! And if you're really concerned about animals, come to the PAWS meeting this evening at 7:00 at the Latimer County Public Library. We'd be glad to have you there. Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Sweet peas Corn Pinto beans Hot rolls Our fast food is Indian Tacos, and have some yummy Chocolate Delight for dessert.
