Oct. 1 Message-ID: <47010AFC.5000705@eosc.edu> Happy October everyone, It's hard to believe it's October already, but I'm starting to see evidence of it. The weather has cooled down from our customary Oklahoma scorching summer temperatures, and some leaves are starting to fall already, while others are trying to hang on to turn all the beautiful fall colors that we love to enjoy. I noticed that the butterflies were out in droves after the fall flowers this weekend. I was just amazed at how many there were flitting around, and that's without even the migrating monarchs yet. Well, Teddy Marmon once again showed off his fishing skills and the effectiveness of his secret recipe super stinky dough bait to catch a stringer full of good sized catfish Saturday from the EOSC ponds for the upcoming Staff Picnic. (Sheryl caught some too, but I don't know if he let her use any of his special bait or not.) If picnic day is anything like this past Saturday was, it will be perfect. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meatballs and mushrooms Navy beans Steamed red potatoes Broccoli with cheese sauce Garlic bread Our fast food is Hot dogs with fixings, French fries, Baked beans, and for dessert we have Brownies. At dinner this evening we'll have: Chicken pot pie Mashed potatoes and gravy Fried squash Winter blend vegetables The fast food selection will be BBQ with chips. Tuesday's breakfast will include: Scrambled eggs Biscuits and gravy Bacon Boiled eggs French toast sticks Oatmeal Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I feel like I need a keeper to tell me what's happening and where I'm supposed to go next. There are things going on in town, with family, and on campus just non-stop all month it seems. Of course, the big deal on campus, (next to Fall Break), is that homecoming is rapidly approaching. There are a lot of interesting events planned for that whole week, starting with the Chili Cook-Off on Sunday, Oct. 28, Gurneys and Goobers race and Game Show Night on Mon. Oct. 29, Pumpkin Carving or Decorating Contest and Pumpkin Guts Wrestling on Tues. Oct. 30, the Trunk or Treat Halloween Carnival and the Bookstore Costume Contest with a prize of $100.00 in Bookstore merchandise for the best costume on Wed. Oct. 31, Native American Day, basketball games against Paris, and the comedy hypnotist, (this is hysterical, DON"T miss it), on Thurs. Nov. 1, a pep rally and Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction on Fri. Nov. 2, and the Hilltoppers Breakfast, a Homecoming Parade, Alumni Association meeting, Tailgate Party, the Homecoming Basketball games and Coronation, and finally the Homecoming Dance on Sat. Nov. 3. Whew, that's a lot of stuff to go to! And of course, there's the Staff Picnic coming up on the 13th, too, so don't forget about that. Be sure and plan on attending the Fall Concert tomorrow evening in Mitchell Auditorium. Even if it rains, it'll be worth getting wet for. The program will consist mostly of songs by Oklahoma singers, or written by Oklahoma natives, (and of course, all of them will be performed by our own very talented EOSC students). Isn't that a great idea for a theme right here a month from our state's hundredth birthday? I noticed that they have a box set out in Roy's Grocery store to collect Boxtops for Education, (those little coupon looking things on a lot of food products), for Wilburton Grade School, I believe, so when you're at Roy's big anniversary sale this weekend, be sure and remember to bring your boxtops to donate to help Wilburton's little students get sports equipment, etc. All schools have tight budgets, so every little bit of help we can give them will be appreciated. (If you don't want to take them to Roy's, get them to me and I'll take them in for you.) Our lunch menu for today includes: Tenderized steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli with rice casserole Black eyed peas Corn Fried okra Hot rolls The fast food will be Frito chili pies with toppings, and for dessert we'll have Cream Cheese Wedges and Carrot Cake. For dinner this evening we'll be serving: Pork loin Mashed potatoes and gravy Macaroni and cheese Green beans Zucchini and tomatoes And our fast food will be PIZZA! I know yesterday was Wednesday, because it was my day to clean the PAWS pens. (I have to keep track of that for sure.) It was getting pretty dark when I was out there, and I decided it was way too dark, when I found myself scooping up a dead copperhead! We have really got a snake killing dog out there, and it's a good thing, since that is the fourth dead copperhead I've found out there this year. I haven't heard anyone else say anything about finding any, maybe they just don't want to brag, or maybe the dogs are saving them all for me! I'm just glad they're killing them first! Don't forget to attend the special Oklahoma themed Fall Concert this evening at 7:00 in Mitchell Auditorium. Paul Enis and our talented students always give a great performance. These will be from 6:45 a.m. (no change there) to 3:30 p.m. (big change there), and will be in effect Monday thru Friday. Our main breakfast line will still close at 8:45 a.m., but we will remain open and offer "Grab and Go" convenience food items until 11:00 a.m. at which time our main food lines will open. All "Grab and Go" items will be CASH ONLY, and will not be offered from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. These items will be available again from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. At this time we will close so our staff can have their dinner break. Regular dinner hours remain the same, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. The Coffee Shop area can now be utilized as a Commuter's Lounge. You may purchase food and/or drinks from the Cafeteria or Book Store and take up to this area to consume. Lounge hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. We will also be moving the Cappuccino machine down to the Cafeteria within the next two weeks for those of you who are suffering from Cappuccino withdrawal. We hope the benefits offered by these changes will offset any inconvenience they may cause. It was really quite surprising to me to find out some of the songs that have been written by some fellow "Okies". And I'm talking well known songs, like "This Land is Your Land", "I'll Fly Away", and "Joy to the World" just to name a few. All the performers were excellent, as usual, but I know I saw several eyes pop and jaws drop when Luke Forwoodson began to sing Roger Miller's "King of the Road". No one expected that deep, deep voice to be coming out of him. If he didn't before, I'd say he has fans now. And as Boomer Lawrie took the stage I wondered why they called him "Boomer". When he began to sing I got it. That guy's another one with a terrific voice. He really sounded great doing his rendition of Merle Haggard's "Fightin' Side of Me". I really enjoyed Kendra Click's performance of the Carrie Underwood song "Not in Checotah Anymore". I had never really heard it and listened to the words before, but hearing her singing it, I could just imagine how a girl from Oklahoma would feel being uprooted to New York or somewhere, where you could find anything you want except a Wal-Mart Store. I hated to hear that long time accompanist, Mary Ford, was ill and had to miss the performance, but wish her a speedy recovery. The next scheduled musical performance that you won't want to miss will be Candlelighting on December 2nd, so mark your calendars and be sure and attend. And don't miss the "Battle of Gowen Mountain" tonight. It's Wilburton High School's homecoming game and they will be playing their long time rivals, the Hartshorne Miners. The coronation starts at 7:00, and the game starts at 7:30. Saturday morning is the Kiamichi Electric Annual Meeting here in the EOSC Fieldhouse, for those of you rural residents who are on Kiamichi Electric. You might get lucky and win a prize. Be sure and wish John Calhoun a happy birthday today, if he didn't take the day off. What does he think this is, his birthday or something? I had to run one of my little beasties to the vet to be fixed, (and she didn't even know she was broken), and there was just a continuous stream of all kind of butterflies out enjoying the fall blooming flowers flying across the road. Maybe it's a "the blossoms are always sweeter on the other side of the road" kind of thing? Don't forget to go out and visit with Levenia Carey, of the Campus Violence Prevention Project, at the Clock Tower today between 1:00 and 3:00, have some Kool-Aid, and get a purple ribbon as she shares valuable information on preventing domestic violence. (The red silhouettes you will see on campus, sad to say, represent actual victims of domestic violence.) Anyone who has a child interested in getting involved in the Theatre Program here at Eastern, should bring them to the auditions being held this afternoon between 3:00 and 5:00 in Mitchell Auditorium. Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Pinto beans Corn Fried okra Our fast food for today is Corn Dogs and French Fries, and for dessert pick a piece of pie! This evening at dinner we'll be having: Mr. Rib Scalloped potatoes Green beans Corn California blend vegetables The fast food will be Dorito bake, refried beans, rice and nacho chips and for dessert have a brownie. Today between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The Campus Violence Prevention Project will be in the center of campus with DV Awareness information. Come get your purple ribbon and take the pledge. I encourage you to wear your ribbon all month. This year, I've selected two themes for our awareness program: "These HANDS are NOT for Hurting" and "Taking STEPS to END Violence." Come out and take the pledge by signing your name to hand and foot print. These prints will be placed on our Violence Awareness Posters and placed around campus. We have prizes, come guess the number of jelly beans or fire balls and win. Dr. Smith will be at the clock tower at 1:30 to place the purple ribbon and sign the proclamation for Domestic Violence. The red shilouettes that will be all around the clock tower and front lawn will have the names and dates of death of Oklahoma victims of Domestic Violence. Some will have information and statistics as well. Later this month the red shilouettes will return to the front lawn with actual stories of deceased victims of DV and the legal status of their perpetrator. There are a number of handouts available on domestic violence, how to help others, protective orders, internet safety. As always we have refreshments (purple kool-aid, cookies, donuts and candy). P.S. This has to be the first time I've ever planned an event and the weather be on my side. It is a beautiful day and I encourage you to join me around the clock tower and Take A Stand Against Violence. If you need any information or desire assistance please drop by my office located on the first floor of Miller Hall. Have a great day and hope to see at the program. Dr. Smith signed a proclamation proclaiming October as Domestic Violence Awareness on the campuses of Eastern Oklahoma State College and placed our purple ribbon. Thanks to Rev. Anthony Washington for leading a prayer on behalf of victims and their families and his words of encouragement for those who are in abusive situations. Second, I would like to thank all my helpers and volunteers. I would love to mention names but fear that I might over look someone unintentionally. You know who you are and I'm forever grateful for your help in placing my silent witnesses, picking up my silent witnesses - as they had great difficulty enduring the wind, for placing the feet and hand prints on the roll out paper for display, for help in setting up and taking down, for taking the photographs and preparation of articles to enhance awareness and understanding. To Student services for all the help and support. I encourage you to continue to wear your purple ribbons all month. I am really looking forward to seeing both of them and I hope you're planning on seeing them too. We have some wonderfully talented kids here at Eastern and quite possibly, some of the ones in the WHS presentation will be EOSC students within a very few years. I know I'm certainly going to encourage them to be. Things are coming together for the EOSC Staff and Faculty picnic on Saturday at Robber's Cave State Park. (Don't listen to Anne Hester when she says it's at Coopers Rock. She's having some sort of a West Virginia flashback or something. We're trying to get her some help.) I hope you're all planning on attending this event. It is made possible by the dues that you pay in to the Faculty Council as well as donations by local merchants. There will be a horseshoe tournament, washers (another throwing type game), (and both of these will have a cash prize for the champion), an inflatable jumping center for kids and kids at heart, plenty of free food and drinks, and good music provided by our own talented EOSC family members, as well as the usual activities available at the park. There will also be a cash drawing with all staff members eligible to win it, so don't despair, you could still win some big bucks, even if you stink at horseshoes and washers. Our menu for today includes: Roast beef Mashed potatotes and gravy Green beans Corn Sliced carrots Baked potato bar The fast food is Chili and Cheese Coneys and French Fries, and for dessert, cool your tastebuds with some Ice Cream and Toppings. For dinner this evening we'll have: Breaded chicken patty Mashed potatoes and gravy Zucchini and tomatoes Corn Green peas Macaroni and cheese with Little Smokies Baked potato bar The fast food will be Hamburgers and Fries with Strawberry Shortcake for dessert. The weather is getting so nice, just kind of in between, past being too hot but not too cold yet either. It would be a good time to have an outdoor birthday party and maybe that's what Jennifer Mack will do this weekend as she celebrated her birthday yesterday, Keith Ott, Kim's son will be celebrating his 15th birthday this Saturday, and Les Brelsford will be celebrating his special day on Sunday. The weather promises to continue wonderfully for the Staff/Faculty picnic tomorrow, so I hope we have a good turnout. Remember, there will be games, good food, cash drawings and good people and good music to enjoy. I really enjoyed the performance of "High School Musical" at WHS last night, and plan to see our production of "Rainmaker" tonight. I think it's a first to have two local plays at virtually the same time. Fortunately, last night was the only night the two are scheduled on the same night. Our menu for today includes: Meat loaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Black eyed peas Winter blend vegetables Baked potato bar Our fast food is Meat and Cheese Nachos, and for dessert we have a yummy looking Cookie Bar. Oct. 15 Message-ID: <47138C01.9070004@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wasn't it a great weekend? The picnic was a lot of fun for those attending, and I want it on record that I am married to one half of the EOSC Champion Horseshoe Team. Gary teamed up with Sheryl Marmon to win that prize and he almost got to touch his half of the money before Destiny had it, (which means I'll probably wind up with it because she'll probably lose it somewhere in the house or leave it in her pants pocket and I'll find it in the laundry.) I believe Helen's husband, Randy Scott, won the Washer Tossing game, and it was still undecided whether Helen was going to get to spend the prize money for him or if he was taking it to Bass Pro Shop. There were lots of freebies and door prizes to be drawn for. (I won a nice household tool set which should come in very handy for fixing a variety of things.) The inflatable jumping area was a big hit with the kids, as was the water balloon fight, which I stayed way clear of. Next year's picnic should be bigger and even better so be practicing your horseshoe throwing and washer tossing and be ready! If we have more help, maybe we can come up with even more events. We watched the Oklahoma Centennial Parade on TV yesterday and got to see the Wilburton High School marching band in it. It was wonderful to get to see local kids on TV marching in our state's centennial celebration parade which included many famous Oklahomans. I'm hoping that quite a few of those kids will be coming to Eastern in the next few years. They would sound great in the Mountaineer Band. Tonight is your last chance to see Eastern's production of "Rainmaker" and if you'll look outside, you'll see that it's really working. Why didn't we have this performed a year or so ago, when we were having such a bad dry spell? And last but not least, Happy Birthday to Eastern's own Keith Lewis. He's been here so long, he ought to own the place by now, but I guess it doesn't work that way. Enjoy yourself today, Keith. Go somewhere you can use your newly acquired Senior Citizen's discount. Our menu for today includes: Beef tips Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Rice Sweet peas Corn Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is a Chicken Patty on a Bun and French Fries, and for dessert have a piece of German Chocolate Cake. After today, we'll be in full-fledged Fall Break, and Fall Festival will be starting at Robber's Cave later this week. I always love this time of year. Fall Festival is always so full of things to look at, to eat, to buy. And there's always wonderful music to listen to. If you happen to hear a wonderful violinist out there, check and see if it isn't Michael Ginsburg, an award winning violinist from McAlester. (For all of us full blood Okies, it's a fiddle, and I think the only difference between a fiddle and a violin is the kind of music that comes out of it.) And if you like what you hear from him, you can buy tickets to an upcoming performance he will be putting on at the Presbyterian Church, at 108 East Blair in Wilburton, on October 27 at 7:30 p.m. from myself, or Ruth Brelsford on campus, or any Latimer County Arts Council Member, or The Gallery on Main Street. Tickets are $10.00 apiece and will bring you an evening of wonderful music and refreshments and the proceeds will go to benefit the Latimer County Arts Council, to provide funds to help bring a variety of cultural programs to local schools. For tickets or more information, please call me at Ext. 712 or Ruth Brelsford at Ext. 762. Be sure and wish Jeff Weems a very happy birthday today. I don't know exactly how old he is, but he disproves my theory that only kids know how to operate all this modern technological stuff. Oct. 22 Cappuccino's back! Message-ID: <471CBA01.1090103@eosc.edu> Hi folks, If you're like me, you had a crazy, busy, nonstop weekend. It's one of those days when I feel like I needed to come back to work just to get some rest, (not that that works all that well either, but I can hope, can't I?) This cooler, rainy weather makes me want to go hibernate somewhere. But it is starting to be great weather for hot chocolate and cappuccino, and we finally got our cappuccino machine hooked up down here last week. You can have hot chocolate either with your meal or just buy a cup by itself, (and we have it in either regular or sugar-free), but the cappuccino is not part of the meal plans and has to be paid for separately. One of our most beloved teachers who has been here long enough to become a campus institution, celebrated her birthday this past weekend and I hope she had one befitting a person as wonderful and kind hearted as she is. I hope you had a wonderful birthday Pat Thomas with many more to come. Our menu for today includes: Chicken enchilada casserole Steamed red potatoes Peas Seasoned baby carrots Corn Rice Baked potato bar Our fast food is a Meatball Sub with Marinara Sauce and we have Mandarin Orange Cake for dessert. Get out your umbrella and come on over, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I think I heard it said that we could get some more before the end of the week. Time to dig out the winter clothes. Don't forget to go to the "Going Away Party" for Claudia Hodge this afternoon at 2:00 in the Library, (up there where we have to go see the insurance man every year). She is leaving us in order to have more time to take care of her aging and ailing mother, and she will be missed. I understand she has been here at Eastern for almost 10 years, and has worked hard at several jobs and activities while employed here. Best of luck, Claudia! And for your information, at 6:00 this evening there will a special program on Fire Ant Control presented by Wayne Smith, Extension Educator for the S. E. District on Fire Ants at the Latimer County Public Library, 301 West Ada Ave. Fire ants can be anything from a nuisance to downright deadly, and even if you don't have an infestation of them on your property at this time, you very well could in the future, so it would be time well spent to learn how to deal with them before they take over your land. Call 465-3751 if you need more information. And if anyone sees Janice Forwoodson, at the Extension Office or maybe down at Curves, there's a rumor going around that she's a year older today. (I'd've never believed it if I hadn't started it myself!) Be sure and wish her a Happy Birthday; she's a sweetie . Oct. 25 Message-ID: <4720B348.8020009@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I should've know something was up yesterday when I got up and blew out a light bulb first thing. I knew I'd have to replace it after work, but didn't think much about it. Of course when I actually went to do it, I realized I didn't have any bulbs that size, so I had to run to town for some. On the way back I noticed some movement in the ditch close to my house on the highway, and when I looked closer, I noticed it was a little beagle, looking all lost and unloved. Of course, I turned around, went back and parked, and got out to see what I could do for her. I walked along the highway until I was about even with her, and started to go closer when I realized I was crossing a water filled ditch, (since the grass hid it I only realized this after I had stuck my foot in it), so I had to backtrack until I could cross over to the other side without anymore wet feet. When I got closer, I realized that it was a beagle and a bonus. She's pregnant. (I know what everyone on my Christmas list is getting this year.) If anyone has lost this little girl, please let me know. She needs a good home to have her puppies in. She's really sweet. She put up with me carrying her back to the car without a fuss, and if you've never tried to carry a pregnant beagle, it's about like being pregnant yourself. You can't see your feet, you walk awkwardly, and you know you'd better not fall down. Leave it to me to go for light bulbs and come home with a pregnant dog! If any of you out there can relate to this situation, we need you at the PAWS meeting tonight at 7:00 at the library! Don't forget to come over and get your FREE FLU SHOT tomorrow from 1:00 to 5:00 in the East Cafeteria. This is especially important for people who have respiratory problems, such as asthma, or if you are older and your immune system may not work like it used to (like most of our other parts), or are around small children who don't want to share their toys, but will gladly share their germs with anyone and everyone they come in contact with. We usually are able to help at least seven families each year, and we would like to top our personal best of twelve families. So please be generous. Oct. 30 Message-ID: <47274A9E.9000004@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I do believe that was my first ever "Gurneys and Goobers" race to witness, (and thankfully, not participate in), yesterday, and it was WILD! I am amazed that the gurneys weren't having to be used for real before it was over with. There were shoes flying, hats flying, gurneys flying... It made me think of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. I missed the first handful of races, but the ones I witnessed were wild enough to make up for it, or maybe they got wilder as they went along. I think the races really got people excited and fired up with the Eastern Homecoming Spirit, though. I'm looking forward to the rest of the activities, like the Mr. Eastern pageant tonight, and the Costume Contest and Carnival tomorrow. As excited as some people were getting yesterday, it's a really good thing that Kiamichi Electric donated EOSC a defibrillator recently, in case anyone gets a little too excited! This is bound to be an exciting week! Happy Birthday wishes go out to Julie Moss today. She's one of the "old hands" around here that never seems to look old at all. Our menu for today includes: Smoked sausage Mashed potatoes and gravy Baked beans Fried okra Corn Pasta bar Hot rolls Our fast food today is Hot Ham and Cheese on a Bun and we have luscious Cobbler for dessert. Come on over and eat with us, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Oct. 31 Happy Halloween! Message-ID: <4728A7CC.9070302@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Things are happening fast and furious on campus this week. I got to see some of the pumpkin carving yesterday. Several groups were participating and doing some nice work on their pumpkins. (I'm still wondering who the inspiration was for the "Drunken Punkin'" one group had carved out. It looked like it had had a bad night. The Mr. Eastern Contest last night was hysterical. Brenton Duncan revealed his humorous side in the role of emcee for the event, giving and getting a few good jibes back and forth with some of the students in the audience as well as the contestants. The 12 "ladies" representing various groups on campus were as varied as night and day, but all were interesting. Yeah, that's a good word...interesting. I just wonder how they're going to explain this to their children someday. (If there's any chance of any of them fathering any after this.) Don't miss the carnival this evening on campus, either. From 3:00 to 5:00 it will be open for the enjoyment of our EOSC students, and from 6:00 to 8:00 it will be open to the public, with all kinds of events, and booths set up. The Cafeteria will be having a Bake Sale booth, so be sure and come by and get some home baked goodies to satisfy your sweet tooth. I hope Mildred gets time to make more of her wonderful head-sized cinnamon rolls like she did for the Chili Cook-off. And don't forget to get by the Bookstore and enter their Halloween Costume contest. My outfit is the envy of all the students. I dressed as an EOSC Honor Grad, using my own old cap and gown, so I smell like a graduate that has been in a cedar chest for about 20 years or so. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatotes and gravy Steamed cabbage Navy beans Fried okra Baby carrots Baked potato bar Little smokies Hot rolls Our fast food is Hot Beef and Cheddar on a Bun and we have Boston Cream Pie for dessert. Have a safe and fun-filled Halloween, Rhoda :-) P. S. Special Happy Halloween wishes go out to Betsy and Rich Wilmes and Marian Reeves. Have a great day, you guys. rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
