Sept. 4 Message-ID: <46DD6DD2.9090600@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you all had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend. As long as they are, I know they always seem too short on that early morning you have to come back to work or class. I got myself way off schedule going to the Choctaw Labor Day Festival at Tuskahoma and staying late a couple of nights. If I'm not nodding off in my keyboard later on this afternoon, I'll be really surprised, but it was a lot of fun. They always have good entertainment and a lot to do and look at, not to mention eat! Our menu for today includes: Baked chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Baked beans Fried okra Corn Pasta bar Hot rolls Our fast food is Barbecue on a Bun with Chips. And for dessert have your choice of Apple or Peach Cobbler. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Sept. 5 Message-ID: <46DEC39C.8020406@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we've gone back into the rainy season, it looks like, but at least it's not hot! I can deal with it. I notice they keep postponing the "Hose Down" because of the rain. I don't get it. Isn't the point to get wet? Why would rain stop that? I can understand how it's playing heck with our ball teams and their schedules, though. I wouldn't want to have to be out there on a ball field likely to get struck by lightning, either, but you always see ball games on TV being played in pouring rain, snow, whatever. I guess that's why they get the big bucks, huh? We've had a dilemma at our house the past few days. We can't find the cell phone. At all. Anywhere. And it's new. A red krazr? My daughter thinks her life is over. We've looked every logical place and plenty of illogical ones, but we can't see it or hear it anywhere. It must be either dead or on silent. With this rain, I just hope it's not outside somewhere, but I wouldn't bet on anything. Where do cell phones go when they hide? I really had second thoughts about sending off the trash before finding the phone, but it's gone now, so that's that. If anyone has any good ideas on where to seek an AWOL cell phone, please let me know! We're getting desperate. My daughter can't find it, my husband can't find it, and I really thought if I really looked, of course, I'd be able to find it no problem, but not this time. I'm stumped. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Steamed cabbage Navy beans Fried okra Baby carrots Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is Hot Ham and Cheese on a Bun. And for dessert, try some Boston Cream Pie. Keep dry, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Sept. 6 Message-ID: <46E00E3A.6080204@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, the great cell phone hunt is still on. I had one really good tip yesterday from Daniel Peoples advising me to check with the carrier and they could locate the AWOL contraption by GPS signal. I tried. Evidently our carrier doesn't do that. May I never be a stranded mountain climber depending on that feature to save me. (Like I climb mountains!) Actually it would've been pretty creepy if they could've told me exactly where in my house to look, like "Go into the bedroom and look under the pile of dirty socks in the corner where the dog hid it." I think I'd've had to discontinue my service. I also got a tip on what to do if I find it in the rain, which is looking more and more likely, as we run out of places in the house to search. According to Becky Davenport, just open it up, take out the battery and put it in a bag of white rice for 24 hours. This should dry it out enough to get it going again. Now if I could just find it. Don't forget tonight is Indian Taco night in the Cafeteria, too. Just $5.00 for a delicious and filling Indian Taco and drink, and we do the dishes. An Indian Taco is one of those things that has all the food groups in it, between the meat, bread, veggies and cheese on top. You can't beat it. We have a great menu for you today including: Spaghetti with meat sauce Broccoli with cheese sauce Corn Seasoned rice Baby carrots Garlic rolls Baked potato bar Our fast food is Cheeseburgers and French Fries. And for dessert we have that delicious Peaches and Cream Cake. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... (Yes, the secret is out; it's a great place to come and eat for a reasonable price and we encourage the local folks who haven't tried us lately to come in and see what we've got to offer.) I email a lunch menu out every day and will be starting today to include the evening's dinner menu and the next day's breakfast menu, (on Friday, I'll include Sat. brunch and Mon. breakfast menus). That way you'll know if you want to skip cooking some evening and come and eat with us or maybe get up a little early to come in for a great breakfast to start your day off right. Be sure and wish Mimi Kelley a Happy Belated Birthday. I managed to neglect her yesterday on her rightful day, but will try to make it up to her today. If you have any birthdays you would like me to include in my daily menu, just email them to me and I'll send them a Happy Birthday wish (sooner or later). Don't forget to attend the Latimer County Free Fair over at the Goddard or Cleo Collins Building today or early tomorrow. They always have lots of wonderful things to look at that some of our extremely talented local residents have made throughout the year. I am continually amazed at the beautiful handicrafts that are produced right in this area by people we see everyday. Eureka! The great cell phone hunt is over! We had turned the house upside down and my husband had searched my vehicle to no avail. (Well, he did find my camera I thought was lost way underneath the seat.) In desperation he thought he'd just check one more time and sure enough, way down wedged into the passenger seat was the missing cell phone, not even letting out a peep to let us know it was anywhere in the vicinity. My daughter almost did cartwheels when I handed it to her. I hope she learns from this how easy those things are to lose and how much you miss them when they're gone. Not to mention how much you'll get fussed at over losing it! Our lunch menu for today, served from 11:00 to 1:30, includes: Fish Crispy cube potatoes Corn on the cob Pinto beans Cornbread Winter blend vegetables with cheese sauce Pasta bar Hot rolls Our fast food for today is Frito Chili Pies. And for dessert have a luscious piece of Coconut Cream Filled Chocolate Cake, or a Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar. Dinner this evening, served from 4:30 to 6:15, will be: Barbecue on a Bun French Fries Dessert Saturday brunch, served from 11:00 to 1:00: Sausage Eggs Biscuits and gravy Chicken fry French fries Corn Salad Dessert And if you want to come in Monday before work or class, our breakfast menu will be: Biscuits and gravy (always) Spanish Omelet Hash browns Fresh fruit Cold cereal It may be necessary to make some substitutions on occasion, but the menus should be accurate for the most part. I don't think I've ever seen it do that before. The beaver dam that had been down there is long gone. I guess they got tired of the county boys tearing it up every time they got it built back and gave up, and I think even the turtles I was seeing have washed downstream now. I do remember getting jarred awake one morning by thunder and lightning and watching the light show out the bedroom window for a few minutes before dozing back off. Everyone knows rainy weather is the best sleeping weather. I hope you all took advantage of it, too. The Coffee Shop is closed today due to a manpower shortage down here in the Cafeteria. We had to recruit Susie to help in here for today. Maybe tomorrow everything will be semi- back to normal, and she'll be able to go back upstairs again. Our lunch menu for today, served from 11:00 to 1:30 includes: Chicken strips Mashed potatoes and gravy Green peas California blend vegetables Corn Baked potato bar Hot rolls Our fast food is a Deli Selection with Chips. My husband and I were driving to the grade school to see the "Rise and Shine" program our daughter was going to be in when we heard a radio announcer stating in shaky disbelief that a plane had actually collided with one of the World Trade Center towers. At this point, it was not yet apparent that this was more than a bizarre and horrible accident. I remember thinking that of all the air space a plane had to fly in, how had it possibly hit a building? Of course by the time the kids were done singing and dancing as if they didn't have a care in the world, we walked out into a much different world. Once we were back in the car with the radio back on, we knew the first hit had been no accident and that terrible things had been unleashed on the world. This evening at 6:00 there will be a concert featuring Kyle Williams, in Mitchell Auditorium in memory of this event. Please come and share this concert of remembrance. I noticed the other day that someone has taken a big hunk out of it. I hated to see that as that rock wall is just one of those things that you think will last forever. I almost had a close encounter with it myself a few years back when I was headed to the bookstore for book buyback. It had snowed and was icy and when I tried to brake and turn in at the entrance, I found myself in the ditch out front going the opposite way from the one I was headed in. Talk about surprised! It looks like we'll have to have the Coffee Shop closed all week, as we're still short handed and limping along. I think I need to take a class to learn how to get music from my computer, download, upload, text, bluetooth, and all the other things that our children seem to know from birth nowadays. It could probably be taught by anyone in the age range of between 4 and 20, as they seem to be the experts on all this. My daughter could probably teach me, but I'm not sure that she wants me to know all that stuff. I could read her text messages, and check her My Space page, and who knows what all else then. As it is, I'm barely able to use the cell phone. It has way too many buttons with no instructions by them, and I don't know what all those little pictures mean. They don't look like anything in my world. I'm not even 50 yet and I already feel like a technological relic from the past. I'm starting to relate to those cavemen on those commercials. They're getting their own TV show you know. I'm going to feel really bad if I find out they have cell phones, iPods, etc. and actually know how to use them. I'm looking forward to going to a family reunion this weekend, so I'm glad it's not still hot. This will be close to the first time my family has gotten together on purpose without someone dying first. Some of my cousins got together last year on the spur of the moment and found out it was doable, so they decided to make it a tradition. My husband's family gets together every time somebody sneezes, so it's pretty special that this time it's my family doing it. If you see us on the Dr. Phil Show in the future, you'll know there were reasons we hadn't done it before. I read Andy Mace's email the other day about the Softball Team's successes last weekend. I am giving bonus points for a voters card or a signed form in all my classes. Why am I pushing this contest? Eastern won first in the State last year and hope to do so again this year. We signed up 180 students last year and we will need that many or more again this year. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The family reunion was very enjoyable and the weather was great. Have you noticed all the construction going on in the area? I guess it was all delayed due to our extreme wet weather earlier in the year, so now it's all happening at once. The new Alco is really coming along, and there's expansion going on at the local hospital and the KEDDO/Vo-Tech building, all right in a row. Wilburton really seems to be booming. It's very encouraging to see growth happening, when all you hear about the economy seems to be negative. He caught several fish, including one good sized catfish, but Johnny Sivic slid in at 10 minutes to 6:00 and nabbed the prize for the most fish, (a nice rod and reel). Teddy still won for the biggest fish, though. Some of the rest of you guys and gals need to plan on joining in and giving them some more competition next year. I didn't fish, but I enjoyed going and talking with the spectators, while my daughter got in and swam. (I'm surprised she didn't get "caught". ) I probably got the worst sunburn I've had all summer right here at the end of the season, too. Evidently my combination bug spray and sunblock is more bug spray than sunblock. As of yesterday, we're the proud? owners of a couple dozen assorted chickens. My husband decided we needed to buy them off one of our nephews who had moved with his family and now lives in town and can't have them. The only thing is, hubby has the pickup and I have the station wagon, so Destiny and I had to rearrange the back, put down a tarp, gather up cages and go catch chickens, that we had to cart back home in the back of the station wagon. Now all we have to do is get some chicken feed and hay and figure out how to keep the raccoons, etc. out of them. Wish us luck with that. We haven't had great success with it before, but we're determined to keep trying. Of course it probably wasn't very funny to anyone who was interrupted in the middle of something important, like taking a shower, or a nice nap. And I bet the student who caused it will never hear the end of it. We had what we refer to as "The Pop-Tart Incident" at our house when my daughter was much smaller. I had gone for a walk outside, my husband had jumped in the shower and Destiny decided she was hungry. Toasting a Pop-Tart was about the extent of her cooking skills at the time, so she loaded a couple in the toaster and went back to watch TV until they popped up. Unfortunately, she loaded them sideways instead of the right way, and when they tried to pop up they just caught under the top of the toaster and kept toasting and toasting. When her dad got out of the shower and opened the bathroom door, he immediately wondered why he was smelling smoke in the house. When he got to the kitchen, the toaster was on fire, with flames reaching almost up to the wooden cabinets directly over it. Needless to say, that toaster was history, (or maybe I should say, toast), and the kitchen was a bit of a mess after he shot the toaster with the fire extinguisher, but there was no major damage, other than losing the toaster, and my daughter learned the correct way to load Pop-Tarts.
