April 1 Message-ID: <47F25044.6040705@eosc.edu> Happy April Fool's Day, Boy, it's busy on campus today! We're just swarming with scholastic contest kids and sponsors, etc. (and I'm sure our own college students are enjoying the day off from their classes.) There are plenty of food booths of all sorts set up outside to tempt everyone, including what I'm calling our Staff Council Sweet Tooth Booth, where we have homemade cookies, brownies, muffins, etc. for sale to raise money for the annual picnic. Be sure and visit these booths. You're sure to find something that appeals to your taste buds at one or more of them. Congratulations to Linda Morgan for earning a place on the FBLA-PBL advisor Wall of Fame. She is truly an asset to our college. Our menu for today includes: Chicken strips Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli and cheese Corn Green beans Hot rolls BBQ sandwich Baked beans Potato chips And for dessert, have a luscious piece of Chocolate Cake. April 2 Message-ID: <47F3A260.2020009@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, I guess it's back to business as usual on campus today, with classes being back in session after the big scholastic contest reprieve yesterday. Is it just me or is this bigger than it's been before? There were kids, sponsors and buses everywhere it seemed like. I was looking at the results that were posted on our web site and there were schools from far and wide participating. Some of the schools I had never even heard of. This should be a really good thing to get kids acquainted with our campus and make them feel comfortable here, then with any luck, we'll be their first choice when it comes time to pick a college. The weather is looking pretty "iffy" for the rest of the week up until Saturday, and that looks like a really nice day if it holds true to the forecast. We may get wet a time or two between now and then, though. Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Rice Green beans Brussel sprouts Okra Hot rolls Burritos with chili and cheese And for dessert have some Bread Pudding. April 7 Message-ID: <47FA38BA.5060402@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you had a great weekend. The weather was wonderful, and we had a very successful PAWS adoption day on Saturday to take advantage of it. We managed to adopt out our two very largest dogs from our pens, (Thelma and Louise), which is a very good thing. That means less food used, less clean-up and less ducking, dodging and yelling to get them off me when I'm out there cleaning. It wouldn't be so bad if I was taller, but they were very friendly and when they jumped up on me, they almost looked me in the eye, (and almost knocked me over several times.) Now we'll be able to regroup some of the other dogs to have less crowding and contention over not wanting to share food bowls. On another dog-related note: a fellow came by our house yesterday evening and was looking for his lost 2 1/2 yr. old female Rottweiler named Charity. He said he had wrecked his pickup on Blue Mountain Thursday morning, the truck rolled, and the windows were broken out and in all the confusion, the Rottweiler ran away from the scene. He has been looking for her ever since, with no luck. She is very friendly, (except for being afraid of small children and loud noises, which come together many times), is wearing a faded red reflective collar, and he is offering a reward for her return. His name is Skip Evans and he can be contacted at 465-1134. Please be on the lookout for this girl, especially if you're headed south, as the wreck was on Blue Mountain and he lives in the Veteran's Colony, 9 miles south of town, so she may have headed that way. All help is appreciated to reunite these two friends. Our menu for today includes: Lasagna Broccoli with cheese sauce Carrots Corn Baked potato bar Garlic bread Hamburgers French fries And for dessert, cool off with our soft serve Ice Cream and Toppings. Have a great week, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Did you know that INSECTS and their kin make up 75% of all the animals on the planet? Or that pound for pound, insects have more protein than beef? Even if you?re not the type to turn over rocks to see what WORMs out or to be a contestant on Fear Factor, consider taking General Entomology! Insects are everywhere we look; they?re infesting your apartment, they?re helping themselves to your blood, they?re FLYing around your face and your food, and they?re HOPPERing all over your (or your family?s) fields and livestock, even TERMITEing your house! They are also an unseen (though often heard!) but significant ecological force in the surrounding forestWEBWORMs, prairies, and waterways. Besides satisfying your curiosity about ?what is that BUG??, you cannot effectively control those that are pests without understanding how they TICK, and from a real entomologist to boot. This is a great addition to your education in agronomy, horticulture, animal sciences, environmental science, natural resources, range management, forestry, pre-veterinarian, and other majors. Apr. 8 Message-ID: <47FB8796.40407@eosc.edu> Hi folks, This started out as a "hairspray day", and now it's turned into an "umbrella day". I heard on Channel 6 this morning that we were experiencing wind gusts of up to 51 miles per hour here, and when I walked outside for a minute this morning, I had no trouble believing it. Looks like a good day to hibernate. According to the Weather program on my computer, we're under a tornado watch until 10:30. My daughter and I got out and did some yard work yesterday evening but I don't know if we'll be able to do that again today. Unless we want to do it in the rain. Belated birthday wishes go out to Dana Lewis who celebrated a birthday yesterday. I hope it was as enjoyable as she is. Our menu for today includes: Baked chicken Baked beans Corn Pasta bar Hot rolls Enchiladas Spanish rice Nachos And for dessert have a helping of luscious Apricot Cobbler. And here I was, all ready for spring, hunting out my shorts and short sleeved or no sleeved shirts, only to have to go back to long sleeves and jackets. Luckily, I found a nice Mountaineer one on sale in the Bookstore, complete with a hood and a warm sweatshirt lining, so I won't freeze after I pay for all the goodies I found in their big sale. If you haven't been in yet, they still have lots of great stuff that is marked down, so get in there before it's all gone. Don't you love a bargain? I found out after I'd sent out my menu yesterday that it was Amanda White's birthday. I hope she had a great one, and wish her many more to follow. I wonder if she and her sisters Trisha and London did any celebrating for her big day? In looking at our website, it appears that our Newspaper and Yearbook staff have been racking up the awards. Congratulations to all the students and their advisers for their excellent work and dedication. (I always enjoy looking through the Statesman when a new copy comes out, myself.) April 10 Message-ID: <47FE2B4F.4000303@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow! What weather we had last night! And it looked like we got off light compared to some areas. The rain was bad enough outside all night last night, but then when I came in to work this morning, it had rained in here, too! It made me think of the old nursery rhyme, "Rain, rain, go away", but we would need to say, "Rain, rain...go outside!" This building has a few areas that tend to leak when it rains very much, and sure enough, they had started in at some point. It seems that April showers not only bring May flowers, they also bring roof leaks, floods and tornadoes! Hard to believe just a year or two ago, we were desperate for rain in this area, suffering from a terrible drought. Now we're squishing in mud, wondering when it's going to stop raining and storming! With all this rain, I'd bet our pond is overflowing, and I hate to think that because it was just full of tiny newly hatched tadpoles, and they tend to wash out with the runoff when the pond gets too full and they're still so small. I remember one year I was out there with a Dixie cup scooping them up as they washed out and pouring them back in in a safer spot. I know it sounds crazy, but I love hearing the frogs at the pond singing in the spring and summer, and well, where do you think frogs come from? Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Garlic bread Broccoli with cheese sauce Corn Seasoned rice Baked potato bar Chicken sandwich French fries And for dessert you've got to try some of this wonderful Peaches and Cream Cake. This could be your new favorite dessert. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you see any of these young people on campus, please make them welcome, and assist them in any way you can. When they think about where they want to go to college, we want them to think of us first. I have come a long way since Christmas. After all this time of not having one, I got a cell phone in my stocking, and since then I've learned how to make calls, take pictures, text message, change ring tones, and lots of other neat stuff. The only thing is, some of the ring tones are just songs that I like to hear. I caught myself the other day listening to the Bee Gees, just enjoying life and right before it stopped playing, I realized it was my phone going off. (I still don't know who was calling me.) Maybe I should go back to the old annoying ring tones that immediately let me know to answer the phone if only to make the noise stop. I believe the Azalea Festival is going on up at Muskogee this month, so if it's not too chilly for you this weekend, it's really a beautiful place to visit. He's kinda picky about that sort of thing. Not the sort of relative you can just owe forever and keep promising to pay and not come through with the cash. Too bad we haven't gotten our promised rebate already. I think it would just take care of what we owe this year. It's kind of one of those cases of Uncle Sam giveth and Uncle Sam taketh away. The bad thing is, he's taking away first, now we have to wait for who knows how long on the "giveth" part. I hope you all had a great weekend. It was a little chilly, but I still managed to get out and tackle some shrubs at the house that had been let run rampant last year. I think our "great flood", when the washer hose burst and we had to have the house overhauled, got me way off my game on yard work, etc. last year. And if you look at my hands and arms, I look like I may have lost the "Battle of the Shrubs". They do fight back. I managed to retrain my clematis to climb the arch again, with the help of some twistie ties, and got rid of some old dead blackberry canes, (very thorny). I'm hoping the blackberry bushes have decided to leave my flower bed. They had pretty much taken it over for a few years. It was always nice to be able to come out and eat juicy berries right in front of the house, but man, the thorns! The other blackberry bushes around are starting to form buds, that will burst into bloom, and along about June will become those juicy, delicious berries we all look forward to. In spite of the frost on the windshield this morning, I heard birds singing like crazy to greet the new day when I stepped out of my car here at work. That's a great sound to start your day off. (It certainly helps soothe those nerves that are still jangled from that annoying alarm clock!) Last week both our Cheerleading team and our Pom and Dance Squad were privileged to go to Daytona Beach, Florida and participate in Nationals. This privilege was earned due to the hours and hours of dedication and practice that they put in to perfect their routines and the excellence they have achieved in their respective fields. Our Pom and Dance Squad won 3rd place in the nation in their division, which is VERY impressive, and while our cheerleaders did not rank as highly, they performed an excellent and very impressive routine themselves which can be viewed on the internet as can the Pom and Dance routine. (Go to http://www.varsity.com.) Much congratulations and praise go out to both the teams and their sponsors who have worked hard with them to help them earn these honors and bring national recognition to Eastern. Our menu for today includes: Beef tips and rice Blackeyed peas Carrots Winter blend vegetables Pasta Hot rolls Corn dogs French fries And for dessert have a serving of Peach Cobbler. It'll make you think of juicy summer peaches. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... April 16 Message-ID: <480613D1.20909@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope all you Sophomores are planning to attend the SOPHOMORE LUNCHEON at the WHITE HOUSE AT NOON. It's certainly not that we don't want you to eat here with us, but you should take advantage of the FREE LUNCH that's being held specially in your honor. With graduation coming up quickly, your days at Eastern are coming to an end and you should get out there and participate in all the special events that are being planned for your enjoyment. Make some more good memories while you're still here with us. I was so thrilled this morning when I heard the first whippoorwill I've heard this year! That's a definite sign that Spring is here. Walking up to my vehicle yesterday as I was about to leave campus, I thought I heard a little noise, like a mewing sound, so I looked around for a kitten or whatever could've been making that little squeaky noise. I was unable to locate the source, so chalked it up to me just hearing things, got in my car and drove to town. When I had completed my errand in town, I approached my vehicle again and this time I definitely heard a mewing sound, and realized that whatever it was, it was travelling with me. I raised the hood and there was a little scared gray and white kitten hunkered into the corner up near the windshield! I immediately recognized who it's daddy was, as there's a larger version of it that runs around on our hill looking for love in all the wrong places. I knew our one of our cats had had kittens somewhere recently, but she was very sneaky about giving us any idea where she had them at. I think she had them down the hill at someone elses house and has just brought them home. Evidently this one got misplaced last night and crawled under my hood for warmth. Talk about a lucky little cat! I've heard so many horror stories about cats and kittens getting in the fan belts of cars and being killed. I took this baby home, and there was the mama cat parading around like nothing at all was wrong, but I put the baby down next to her and what a reunion! It turns out there are 2 more that she's brought home also. It is spring after all, so be sure and watch out for little kittens and puppies that don't have any "street smarts" yet and don't know not to get under vehicles. Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Pinto beans Crispy cube potatoes Cabbage with smoked sausage Corn Spanish rice Cornbread Tuna salad sandwiches Potato chips And for dessert have some scrumptious Chocolate Delight! April 17 Message-ID: <480768B1.9000203@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we're a little over halfway through this busy month, and it's a relief that we have a few of our "major big deals" over and done with. If I didn't work here in the Cafeteria, I'd never believe all the stuff they do and have to prepare for. You'd think it would just be 3 meals a day and that's that. BUT...We had a big DOC Cadette graduation last week, yesterday was the Sophomore Luncheon, and today is the DOC CLEET graduation, among other things. The ball teams are always needing sack lunches, and due to the weather, it can sometimes be at very short notice, due to a suddenly rescheduled game, and there are always other little things going on that really keep our "To Do" board covered up. And of course, they still do prepare 3 regular meals a day come rain or shine! Be sure and get into the Bookstore while they're having their BIG SALE! Everything is 75% off, (except for textbooks and food items). And if you're looking for something to do out in the wonderful weather this weekend, you don't have to go far. Hop on down to the Second Annual Green Frog Festival right here in Wilburton, with all kinds of musical entertainment, including Jana Jae, "Queen of the Country Fiddle" on Fri. night, an art show, motorocycle show Sat. from 10:00 to 11:00, food booths, a magician, games and activities for the kids, arts and crafts, storytellers, and the Shawnee Shootists Re-enactor group, and don't you dare miss EASTERN'S RISING STARS on Saturday at 1:00, including our own Luke Forwoodson and Daniel Bacorn. Be there or be square! Our menu for today includes: Goulash Scalloped potatoes Green beans Zucchini and tomatoes Fried squash Baked potato bar Hot rolls Burgers French fries And for dessert have a piece of German Chocolate Cake. I'll be off tomorrow, so will try to put out tomorrow's menu and the Sunday Buffet menu later today, and I'll tell you now to have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have some wonderfully talented young people participating in this, so be sure and try to be there to enjoy them. April 21 Message-ID: <480CAB0C.3010504@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you all got out and enjoyed the wonderful weekend weather we just had. I enjoyed going to the Green Frog Festival downtown on Friday, even though the weather was cooler. Saturday and Sunday I worked here in the Cafeteria, and tried to take care of the salad bar. I really hadn't known that I would be doing that, so you can imagine the shocked look on my face when I found out I had to come up with 17 different things to stock it with! That sounds like a lot at first, then you get started filling it up and get on a roll, and it doesn't sound so bad, until those last few empty crocks are sitting there and you've run out of ideas (or availability) of things to put in them. Then you're right back to when it sounded like a lot. I finally figured out enough things to fill it up (whew) and survived the day with only one band-aid needed. (Did I ever mention that I'm not a kitchen person? Believe me, I did not get the job as Cafeteria secretary because I knew diddly squat about kitchen stuff. I think I've gained a new respect for all the work these ladies and men have to do in here.) It was one of those days when you just go around all day working and working and still feeling like you've forgotten to do something, so I've locked myself in my office all day, and tried to keep a low profile, waiting for the moment when someone who knows what they're doing figures out what all I may have messed up or forgotten. Maybe I should've hid that big sharp knife... :-) I was sorry to see the email from Ali Martinez that Lynn Gammons will be leaving Eastern. I wish her all the best in her new endeavors. She will be missed. Our Food Services Manager, Mildred Whisenhunt, celebrated a working birthday last Friday. I'm sure she would've rather been out in her flower bed, or maybe even just still in bed, but she came in to work anyway. Now that's dedication! Our menu for today includes: Fried chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Winter blend vegetables Hot rolls Tuna salad Potato chips And for dessert, make your own concoction with our soft serve Ice Cream and variety of Toppings. April 22 Message-ID: <480DFCA0.8030500@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Happy Earth Day! Today would be a great day to think about what you can do to make our planet a better place to live for not only us, but future generations. Even a small step is a start. Recycling aluminum cans is one way to help conserve the natural resources of our planet, and make some extra money at the same time. Our PAWS group has been saving and recycling cans for some time now to help get money to feed and care for the homeless dogs we take in. It helps us and the dogs, and it helps clean up our planet. Another thing you could try is to switch from old fashioned light bulbs to the new "squiggly" energy-saving ones. They cost more, but they use less electricity and I can testify that you don't have to change them near as often. (Being on the short side, I pay attention to how many times I have to climb up in a chair or two to do this chore, and I'm very happy I decided to change to the new longer lasting, energy saving bulbs.) It seems like if a light bulb ever burned out, it was always right after my husband left for work, and I really hated it when it was the bathroom light. It's a small room with no windows, so when the light goes out in there, it's dark! I spoke with Mr. Skip Evans, the fellow whose Rottweiler, Charity, ran away from the scene of his pickup accident on April 3 and he still has not been reunited with her. Please help keep an eye out for a lost, scared Rottweiler. She needs to get back home. If you are interested in knowing more about the trip, please make plans to attend the Photo club meeting at 3 p.m. this afternoon (April 23) in Mitchell Hall Room 109 (the Journalism classroom). We hope to see you there. Sincerely, Steven Akins, Photo Club Co-Sponsor From rwatkins at eosc.edu Wed Apr 23 10:37:21 2008 From: rwatkins at eosc.edu (Rhoda Watkins) Date: Wed, 23 Apr 2008 10:37:21 -0500 Subject: [Eoscstudents] Menu for Wed. April 23 Message-ID: <480F57B1.1030004@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Even though I'm sending the menu out to everyone, some of you should be eating at the Secretary's (excuse me, Administrative Professional's) Day Luncheon, so you all can just disregard this menu, as we will be having something different in the East Cafeteria. I already got a wonderful surprise, as Mildred sent me flowers, and they are the most beautiful things! And she promised not to spill anything on me when she serves me lunch too! How can you beat that? Even though I don't really want it to rain, I almost wish it would just to wash some of the pollen away. Have you noticed lately that everything outside is coated in yellow dust? If you don't move your vehicle for a while, you can start to see on the windshield a coating of yellow pollen. And if there's any dampness or stickiness on your windshield or anywhere else on your vehicle, it will look like a pollen magnet! Don't you know the allergy medicine manufacturers are loving it? Don't forget Guys and Dolls will be opening tomorrow night at 7:30 and run Fri. night and Saturday night here in Mitchell Auditorium, so make plans to come out one of those nights to see another fine performance by our Theatre Dept. It's looking like I may not be able to make it til Saturday, but I sure don't want to miss it and you shouldn't either. Our menu for today includes: Tamale pie Mashed potato casserole Green beans Corn California blend vegetables BBQ sandwich Potato chips And for dessert have some yummy Apple Cobbler. It's especially good with some of our soft serve Ice Cream on top. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... April 24 Message-ID: <48109F96.6070607@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, tonight is the opening of Guys and Dolls, so be sure and make plans to attend, tonight, Friday night or Saturday night at 7:30. We had a sample of some of the singing from this production, along with some other numbers, yesterday at the Administrative Professional 's Luncheon and it was awesome! Paul Enis, Mary Ford and our talented EOSC singers always do a wonderful job and we're always thrilled to get to hear a special performance from them. I believe they said there would be only two of them graduating this year, Crystal Needham and Kendra Click, and they will be missed, but there will be a great basic group returning in the fall so the show will go on. Very Happy Birthday wishes go out to Gear-Up's Cheryl Roberts today. She is getting one year better. Don't celebrate too much, Cheryl! I came back from the Luncheon yesterday to find that I had not gotten the note up on the board about the Softball Team's snack sacks, so had to hurry and put them together and run them over to the field special delivery. I definitely didn't want Andy and all those girls with ball bats mad at me! (I'm glad they were playing here instead of out of town. I could just see me chasing the bus down the highway with a box of food!) Our menu for today includes: Hard shell tacos Spanish rice Beans Turnip greens Okra Seasoned waffle fries Spaghetti and meatballs Grilled cheese Stew And for dessert have some yummy Chocolate Cake. April 25th Lunch and Sunday Lunch Buffet Message-ID: <4810D4FB.4090007@eosc.edu> Hi again folks, I hope you all enjoy your Friday. I'll be off due to having worked last weekend, and I'm ready for some rest and relaxation. I hope that actually happens. You know how it is with the best laid plans... It's been a busy week here in the Cafeteria and poor Mildred has been pulling her hair out trying to figure out schedules that will give us enough help here, but still let everyone start getting some time off to use up their Personal Days. Summer will be upon us and camps will be starting before we know it. We get so busy then you have to call in dead to get off. Our menu for Friday includes: Beef stroganoff wth beef tips Mashed potatoes and gravy Peas Vegetable blend Hot rolls Deli selections Potato chips And for dessert have some yummy hot Cobbler. Our Sunday Lunch Buffet menu includes: Pork loin Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli and cheese casserole Corn Baby carrots Hot rolls Full salad bar And for dessert have some all American Apple Cobbler! If that doesn't suit you for Sunday dinner, the 4H Club is having their yearly Spaghetti Dinner to raise money for the Cancer Relay for Life at the Wilburton High School Cafeteria, so if you go hungry on Sunday afternoon it's not for lack of great options to choose from! For more information on the Spaghetti Dinner, call 465-3349. Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... April 28 Message-ID: <4815E622.60100@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you had a fabulous weekend, and are ready for a wonderful work week! Dig out those grass skirts and Hawaiian flowered shirts and get ready for the big luau tomorrow evening! Sally and her gang have lots of fun planned for everyone so be sure and plan on being there. The Cafeteria will not be serving an evening meal tomorrow, so that everyone can go and eat at the luau. There will be all kinds of wonderful luau type food so come ready to party Hawaiian style! I got to attend the musical "Guys and Dolls" Saturday night with my daughter and her boyfriend and we really enjoyed it. Everyone did a great job! As Mary Ford said, it's a shame it has to be over so soon. So much time and preparation put into something and it's over so quickly, but the wonderful memories will last forever. And the incriminating photographs! Congratulations go out to Neil Enis and family, including grandma Linda, on the birth of new twin girls Sierra Jordan and Sonora Jasmine. I know these two little girls will fill all their lives with joy and happiness. What a double blessing! I just hope they remember that at 2 o'clock feeding time! Happy Birthday wishes go out to Lacey Conaway, Nursing Instructor. And wishes for many more! Our menu for today includes: Dorito bake Nacho chips and cheese Refried beans Mashed potato casserole Broccoli and rice casserole Corn Chicken sandwich French fries And for dessert, have some delicious Ice Cream with your choice of Toppings. April 29 Message-ID: <4817343B.6050804@eosc.edu> Aloha everyone, No, I'm not in Hawaii, darn it! That's just to remind you of the Luau being thrown by Student Services this evening at the Track Field. Be sure and make plans to attend. There will be lots of fun and games, and luscious food of all kinds. (My mouth has been watering over here this morning seeing all that luscious fresh fruit being prepared, and I have to confess, I did have to sample a piece of fresh pineapple and a juicy, ripe strawberry.) The Cafeteria will be closed this evening as the workers will be working at the Luau instead of in the kitchen and they're all wearing their most Hawaiian looking shirts. As I said, there will be plenty of fresh fruit, sweet and sour chicken, and I hear even a roast pig, so get on your "Hawaiian floweredy shirts", your shorts and flip flops and come on out! Be sure and notice the flower beds between the Student Union and the Administration Building, and thank Sheryl Marmon, Physical Plant Secretary and Staff Council Secretary, for her efforts in weeding, cleaning out and planting them, and new dad Neil Enis, horticulture instructor and greenhouse supervisor, for donating the beautiful begonias. The Staff Council has decided to adopt the flower beds in this area to take care of as a way to show our Eastern pride and make a visible contribution to our campus. With graduation coming up on Friday, we all need to do our part toward making and keeping our campus beautiful! Our menu for lunch today includes: Chicken pot pie Mashed potatoes and gravy Fried squash Winter blend vegetables Chili dogs French fries And for dessert have a hunk of Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar. Don't forget we won't be serving dinner in the Cafeteria this evening, but come to the Luau and get a taste of Hawaii in Oklahoma! See you at the luau, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
