Aug. 4 Message-ID: <48971A1F.8080103@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow! It's Aug. 4 already! Time sure flies when you're passed out from a heat stroke. It was an extremely hot weekend and today is not supposed to be much better, but according to the weather forecast, after today the temperature will steadily decline all week until we get down to a chilly 92 around next Saturday! I can't wait! All I can say is, this fall and next spring, we need to be planting more shade trees. At the rate we keep losing our trees to ice storms, drought, insects, etc. we're going to need to keep planting and tending to more and more new ones just to keep up. If I wanted to live in a desert, I'd move to one. Be sure and watch out for the new parking area signs on campus. We have a new one in the parking lot behind Johnston Hall that people are not used to yet and with so few cars in the parking lot now it looks like it's just stuck out in the middle of nowhere, but in a few days, when classes start back, trust me, it'll have cars all around it. I just hope no one runs over it before then. I think I jumped the gun on reporting that Eastern grad Joel Kerns was elected Pittsburg County Sheriff last week. He is however in a runoff for the office so we'll see how that turns out. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti and meatballs Chicken fried steak Mashed potatoes and white gravy Sweet peas Baby carrots Winter blend vegetables Garlic bread And for dessert, come in and cool off with a summer favorite, Ice Cream and Toppings. Yummy! Keep cool, Rhoda 8-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Aug. 5 Message-ID: <48986BBE.3090203@eosc.edu> Hi folks, We got a little welcome rain at my house yesterday evening. I hope you all did too. Everything was just about to the point of spontaneous combustion. Opening the storm door to go in the house, or putting your seatbelt on in the car could almost get you branded, and definitely make you yelp and let go as fast as you could. Be sure and keep fresh water out for your outdoor pets. It is critical in this heat that if they can't get in to the house or somewhere cooler that they have plenty of water to keep them hydrated. I read somewhere that large dogs enjoy it if you freeze a treat or a toy in a chunk of ice and put it out for them. They love to play with it trying to get the toy out. Watch out for wasps and other stinging insects in your pet's area too. We had several wasps come into our house this past weekend and a couple of our dogs thought it was great fun to jump and snap at them. Luckily they didn't actually get hold of one, but I think the wasps held a grudge, because later, one of them dive bombed my chihuahua and stung her on the shoulder. She spent the rest of the weekend scared to death watching for them and hiding under covers. She really learned a healthy respect for wasps from that little experience. Luckily she didn't have an allergic reaction. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Broccoli rice casserole Blackeye peas Corn Squash Rolls Chicken patty Chips And for dessert have a real taste of summer with some Blackberry Cobbler. Aug. 6 Message-ID: <4899BD97.8080801@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, today is supposed to be the start of our "cooler front". We're not supposed to make it all the way up to triple digits, in other words. Whew, what a relief! I'm ready for whatever relief we can get. We had a Cafeteria staff meeting yesterday afternoon to discuss upcoming changes in duties and scheduling. Irene Coy, our lunch cashier is scheduled to retire on September 23, (her birthday), so we're having to shuffle people around to fill the large gap she will be leaving. Irene has been here 10 years and keeps very busy around here cleaning everything from top to bottom, and various other tasks, when she's not having to just sit there and listen to the "boop" of our scanner to make sure all our customers are accounted for. We're also working on preparing new menus with some different food choices than we've tried before. Mildred has everyone looking for new ideas for us to try all the time. Naturally we can't try everything we'd like to, but if we can find a new recipe or an interesting variation on an old favorite that won't break our budget, we may just offer it and see what the response is. Variety is the spice of life, after all. I hope everyone is ready for Fall Conference tomorrow. It looks as if a number of widely varied but important topics will be covered by various speakers over the two day conference. This should bring everyone up to speed on the many things happening here at Eastern and get everyone ready for the start of the new semester and our Centennial year! Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Macaroni and tomatoes Green beans Fried okra Scandinavian blend vegetables Hot rolls Burritos with chili and cheese French fries And for dessert, a summer favorite, Peach Cobbler. Aug. 11 Message-ID: <48A053DB.3030307@eosc.edu> Welcome back everyone! Or just welcome for you new folks! It's an awfully wet start for the new semester, but at least it's not hot! I knew there would be some confusion with the new parking space designations this morning, but I didn't count on pouring rain making it even more difficult to figure out where you should be going! I hope I'm parked in the right area. I had to cross two creeks to get to the Cafeteria, but I made it without washing away somehow! My hours have changed starting this week. I am now one of the 8 to 5 crew, where I used to come in from 6 to 3. I really enjoyed the extra time this morning, getting to fight with my daughter over the bathroom, and fight all the 8 o'clock traffic coming in. (You do recognize sarcasm when you see it don't you?) I'm not really a morning person, so I didn't enjoy getting up at 5, but it is a lot less busy at that hour! I think this new schedule will be better though, since I don't have to be out front cashiering or serving at breakfast anymore. It will put me here where I can get all my many questions answered the minute I think them up by people in the Business Office who will probably be wishing to put me on graveyard shift so I won't have so many questions needing answers. Recent birthdays on campus include Jennifer Labor on Aug. 3, Mr. Tracy Clark on Aug. 7, LaDonna Howell on Aug. 8, and Buddy Sandefur today, Aug. 11. Feliz Cumpleanos, Buddy! (I hope I said that right!) And a very Happy Birthday to the rest of you! In case some of you are wondering why I said "Mr. Tracy Clark", it's because we have a new Tracy Clark in town. A female version. The new Tracy Clark is the new administrative assistant in the Nursing Dept. It would make me sound really old to say I've been friends with her grandmother for decades and known of Tracy ever since she was in school here at Wilburton, wouldn't it? (And while some of you may not know her, you may know her ornery brother Brian Crockett, but we won't hold that against her.) Our menu for today includes: Baked ham Pizza Pasta bar Scalloped potatoes Sweet peas Broccoli Corn Rolls And for dessert make your own concoction with our Ice Cream and Toppings! Dean Sally Davis and the dorm people gave these returning sophomores permission to leave them in their rooms as they are very heavy and bulky and it is difficult to get them in and out of the rooms. They were used for a shelf that goes across the whole room slightly above the window, from desk-top to desk-top. . According to Terry Green, new housing manager for the Dean in Miller, they were left in the rooms and then put in a storage room in the dorm and locked up when those dorm rooms(lst.floor west) were painted this summer. Someone took them out of the storage room? The boards were bought at Wilburton Bld. Center by the students for 18.00 last year or about 15.25 at Lowe's in McAlester. Several of them had names on the back of the board and were painted brown. About 8 of them are missing? Please let me know if anyone knows the where-abouts of the boards. For those of you not from around here, it's very rare that we have weather this cool at this time of year, so try to enjoy it, even if it is wetter than you'd like. I noticed on the EOSC calendar that next week has been designated "Wet Week" on campus. It seems we may have started a week early on that. I don't know if any of you noticed the "Page from the Past" in last week's Latimer County News Tribune, but a couple of newly hired (back then) Eastern faculty members made the front page. Bill Albright and Billye Kay Givens were hired way back when and are still here with us today. As a matter of fact, today is Mr. Albright's birthday, so be sure and wish him a great day when you see him. He's a really nice fellow to get to know. (And Billye Kay is one of my favorites, too.) They are both definitely worth keeping around. You really had to watch for oncoming headlights closely to see if you were about to get mowed down, or if you might be able to make it across the road in one piece if you went really fast! The thick fog was probably a major factor in why there were a couple of dead raccoons in the highway just down our hill. They're so fuzzy and gray they probably blended right in and didn't stand a chance, especially since they don't have headlights! You may have noticed that we have set up our serving line a little differently than in the past. We are trying to have our main course meat choices in the first area where our server is, and our side dishes, vegetables, etc. in the second area. Since we're going to lose Irene in about a month, we're trying to learn to make do with only one server where we previously required two. Now if we can just get our customers trained to go on down to the other side to find all the good veggies, etc. and not think we've turned into total carnivores... I got an email today from a friend in Chicago with a picture of an OLD picture postcard of Mitchell Hall from back in 1911 when we were still the School of Mines! Sounds like something Kim Pendergraft would love to have for our archives. I wanted to attach it to my menu but wasn't sure how to go about it, so if anyone would like to see it, let me know & I'll forward it to you. Maybe I need to take a computer class, huh? I don't know nearly as much as I'd like to about these contraptions. Just enough to be dangerous, some would say. Those of you who know what the weather is normally like here in August will realize how rare this is for us to get any kind of heat and drought relief this time of year. I know we're all human and we've got to have something to gripe about, but usually this time of year, we're praying for rain, not cussing it. Just take your shoes off, wade on in and be happy. I got to attend the Alumni Fish Fry last Fri. and enjoyed getting to visit with lots of folks. Several VIP's were in attendance and seemed to be having a good time, along with many staff and faculty, students and former students. Many thanks to all those who helped put this together: our Cafeteria staff who gathered items up and prepared the side items and dessert, (my personal favorite, those delicious cobblers), those great Aggie cooks who slaved over those fryers cooking the fish, all the folks in the Dean's office and their student volunteers, Ann Owens and Kim Ott who put in a lot of work on this, and anyone else who was involved in helping in any way. Miraculously, the weather was perfect for the event to be held in a big tent outside the White House, and the golf carts bringing people up the hill were a big help! This is always an enjoyable event and a great opportunity to bring people to our campus and show them what we've got, or in the case of our "War Zone" out front, what we're going to have. Our Lunch menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Rice Blackeye peas Brussell sprouts Sweet peas with potatoes and cream sauce Green bean casserole Hot rolls Hot ham and cheese on a bun French fries And for dessert: Blackberry Cobbler! It's been so nice and cool in the evenings, feeling like fall, that I just want to go kicking around in the leaves outside. (They haven't turned pretty colors, but they've died from the previous heat and fallen off anyway.) I'm still trying to adjust my sleeping schedule after changing my work hours, and this morning I almost hit the ceiling when my daughter's alarm went off. Mainly because it's a bloodcurdling scream coming from her cell phone which happened to be on the headboard of my bed! When I asked her what in the world that was, she said it was her alarm. When I asked her why, she said, "Because it works." No argument there. I really enjoyed the Top Ten List Eddie Woods sent out of things to look forward to here at Eastern this year. He really nailed it on all counts. Keep up the good work, Eddie! We have a few birthdays coming up this weekend for members of our EOSC family. Ali Martinez, Carolyn Prock and Maurice Hawthorne will all celebrate a birthday on Sunday. I hope they all have a very enjoyable "Big Day". I always feel bad when I have to be off because I know inquiring minds want to know what's for lunch! Happy belated birthday wishes go out to Diane Donoley who celebrated her birthday on Monday. I hope she had a great day. I thought last week that we may have missed the mark on proclaiming this "Wet Week" instead of last week, since last week was pretty wet, but according to the weather forecasts, this week may turn out to be pretty wet also. Not too bad for August in Oklahoma! While it shows on our calendar that "Water Balloon Battles" had been scheduled for high noon at the clock tower, Dana tells me that is looking iffy for today. Who'd've thought it would be too wet for "Wet Week" in August? I read Ann Owens' email about Eastern's Beijing Olympics connection. Is that cool or what? It's amazing the connections that can occur between people, even in far flung areas like this one. I noticed that last week T. Boone Pickens was speaking at McAlester on his proposed energy policy. Even though he's known for making his millions in the oil business, he now seems ready and willing to talk about developing alternative engergy sources. Now there's a man we could use a connection with! I hope we had a representative at that meeting! Our lunch menu for today includes: Pork loin Meatball subs Au gratin potatoes Blackeye peas Mashed potatoes and gravy Pasta bar Spinach Fried squash Hot rolls And for dessert you've got to try some of our new recipe: Strawberry Mousse Cake. I have to go to Datatel training at 10:00, to get educated on our new computer system. (I don't know much about it yet, I'll just be glad when it starts scanning the ID cards in the Cafeteria!) Then we have a Staff Council Meeting this afternoon. Speaking of the new computer system, I need to remind the students to PLEASE be sure you have your EOSC ID card with you when you come to the Cafeteria to eat. I know they're not scanning yet, but we need to be able to verify who you are. Yes, even Sophomores, because while you may be coming back for a second year, not all of our help knows who you are automatically. Just think of it as preparation for life. You know when you drive, you are required to have your Driver's License with you and your proof of insurance. Just remember that when you come in to eat, you have to bring your student ID with you. If you don't have it, you will be sent back to get it. If you have lost it, you will have to go to Student Services to get a new one. Our menu for Lunch today includes: Chicken parmesan Hard tacos Loaded baked potatoes Corn Okra Sweet peas Baby carrots And for dessert have some Poke Cake. For dinner this evening we will have: Grilled cheese sandwiches Tomato soup Chicken pattie on a bun French fries And for dessert have a yummy piece of Cheesecake. Friday's breakfast will feature: Fried eggs Bacon Pancakes Biscuits and gravy Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I found out the other day what's causing all this rain in our traditionally dry month of August. It has nothing to do with Hurricane or Tropical Storm Fay or Low pressure systems, cold fronts, or anything like that. It's because Sandra Robertson is having a house built, and doesn't have the roof on yet. I think she should've talked John into doing this back in the several years we were facing such severe drought conditions and desperately needed rain, but better late than never. And congratulations and the best of luck on this major undertaking. Be careful when picking up your mail from the Faculty/Staff mailboxes. They've changed some of the spots again. I had finally gotten used to looking for Mildred's name way down in the W's instead of Novella's way up in the B's, and now they've taken out people who have left us and added boxes for the new faculty or staff members, slid us over one, and I find myself trying to grab Cheryl Wood-Myers' mail. It's a good thing we're friends. I thought she was the "new kid on the block" around here, but turns out, she's coming back to Eastern, after being on the faculty years ago and going on to a career with the DHS. We're very glad to have her back. If any of you are running around in Talihina tomorrow, there will be a car wash on Norbury's empty lot to raise money for a skate park. Please stop and support this cause. Get your vehicle washed or just make a donation. We have a lot of kids down there who would love to have this facility become a reality, to give them a place where they're allowed to skate, bike, etc. and keep them from getting in trouble for doing this in inappropriate places. Our menu for today includes: Fish sticks Burritos with chili and cheese Scalloped potatoes Macaroni and cheese Green beans Scandinavian blend vegetables Brussels sprouts French fries And for dessert have some all American Apple Cobbler. Aug. 25 Message-ID: <48B2C988.7080109@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, our air conditioning went off over the weekend here in the Cafeteria and we're all about to have a meltdown. Usually this happens when we have storms and it shuts off because of lightning, but I don't think that was the culprit this time. I don't know if we're tied in to the same system as the Administration Building to the extent that if they shut theirs off and go home for the weekend it shuts ours off too, (even though we don't all go home for the weekend), but we need to figure out what the problem is before someone has a heat stroke! The high heat was pretty rough on our Sunday Buffet customers, too. We have a string of birthdays in our EOSC bunch to report. Donna Rice started it off with her birthday this past Sat. Aug. 23, followed by Andy Mace with his birthday on Sun. Aug. 24, and Allen Kendrick who is celebrating his birthday today. I hope they all enjoyed their special days to the hilt. Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak with brown gravy Pizza with pasta bar Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Homemade seasoned rice Seasoned green beans Brussels sprouts Corn California blend vegetables Hot rolls And for dessert, cool off with our Ice Cream and Toppings. Today's dinner and tomorrow's breakfast will be reported later. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Aug. 26 Lunch and Dinner, Aug. 27 Breakfast Message-ID: <48B41725.1040606@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I was saddened yesterday to learn of the passing of long time Eastern teacher and friend, Stoney Hardcastle. A former journalism instructor and still a prolific writer, his weekly newspaper column will be missed by many. Stoney was something of a local legend, a character, and a regular on campus every Tuesday to attend Lion's Club meetings. Happy trails, Stoney. We also received word of the passing of Frieda Baudour, wife of our handyman, Dave Baudour. Much sympathy goes out to their family. Don't forget today is Election Day. I believe today's election will decide the outcome of the local Sheriff's election, as well as who will take over the County Commissioner post in District 2. Polls stay open til 7:00 p.m. so go do your civic duty. On a happier note, one of our Gear-Up ladies, Nicole Cook, celebrates a birthday today. May she have a very happy one. Our menu for lunch today includes: Beef stroganoff Cheeseburgers Loaded baked potatoes Winter blend vegetables French fries Blackeyed peas Turnip greens Hominy Hot rolls And for dessert, have some luscious Cobbler. Plans for the dinner menu include: Meatball subs with potato chips Pepper steak with rice Corn Fried okra Green beans Macaroni and tomatoes And Banana Pudding for dessert. Wednesday's breakfast will feature: Scrambled eggs Link sausage Biscuits and gravy Hash browns Oatmeal Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Maybe we can get some of the campaign signs off the landscape now. It looks like we have a new sheriff in town, with Israel Beauchamp coming out on top in that race, and a real squeaker being decided in the Dist. 2 county commissioner's race, with John Medders coming out ahead by 6 votes! And while I was a little premature in reporting after the primary election that Joel Kerns won the Pittsburg County Sheriff's race, it does appear that he came out on top in the runoff after all. Maybe I'm psychic. If I could only pick lottery numbers! With the Labor Day weekend upon us, all college offices will be closed and there will be no classes on Monday. (Even the Dept. of Corrections Training Center gets the day off!) The Cafeteria will be open for Brunch from 11:00 to 1:00 and Dinner from 5:00 to 6:00 on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Shirley "Hopalong" Calhoun, who shares a birthday with my husband. (No, they're not twins.) She may have to postpone "kicking up her heels" in celebration until her broken toe heals. We're going to be bringing the Hot Chocolate machine and the Cappuccino machine back into service soon, if they're not there already, so you'll soon be able to buy a cup of your favorite hot beverage here again. Not everyone is a coffee drinker, so this should appeal to those who prefer something out of the ordinary to sip on. Our lunch menu today includes: Pork cutlets Pizza with pasta bar Steamed potatoes Tator tots Cabbage Navy beans Gravy Zucchini and tomatoes Corn Hot rolls And for dessert, have some delicious Cobbler. Dinner this evening will feature: Chicken tetrazzini Steak sandwiches French fries Onion rings Sweet peas Baby carrots Corn Broccoli And for dessert Cherry Chocolate Cake. Message-ID: <48B58B20.9010701@eosc.edu> Hey you guys, we have had quite a few new members sign up for SSS, and we are so glad to welcome you! However, yesterday we had a great workshop on Study Skills and Note Taking, something that all new students could use, and we had very low attendance! Remember that these workshops are right here on campus and are a quick and easy way to get participation points that count toward the Grant Aid Scholarship! We want you to get the most of your college experience. Plus, we always have snacks at the workshops, and free food is always good! The next workshop on the Wilburton Campus is Sept. 18. It will be a movie. There are 2 workshops planned for McAlester, they are on Oct 7 and Nov 11. Hope to see you there! J. Linker. He had been a fixture at the Buffalo Valley Schools for many years, having driven a bus for 40 some of his 84 years, and worked there for several years after he gave up driving the bus. If you get over that way, you can see the R. J. Linker Bus Barn that they named for him in honor of his many years of faithful service. The Cafeteria will keep regular weekend hours this Saturday, Sunday and also on the Monday Labor Day Holiday, serving Brunch from 11:00 to 1:00 and Dinner from 5:00 to 6:00. (Sunday's 11:00 meal will be our Sunday Buffet rather than Brunch.) Whatever your plans are this weekend, whether it's going to the big Choctaw Labor Day Festival at Tuskahoma, kicking back at your house, or maybe having one last get together at a lake, remember to be safe and responsible. It's always tragic to hear how many peole are killed or injured in holiday traffic and other accidents when they were just out to have a good time. Our menu for today includes: Beef goulash Fish on a bun Loaded baked potato Macaroni and cheese Green beans Corn Seasoned rice Squash And for dessert have a fresh and fruity helping of Cobbler. Dinner this evening will include: Chicken strips French fries Salad And for dessert have some of our luscious Soft Serve Ice Cream. Our Sunday Buffet will include: Baked ham Chicken and dressing Fresh baked sweet potatoes Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Fresh squash Corn Blackeyed peas Salad bar Hot rolls And for dessert, Cobbler. Have a great, safe weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
