July 1 Message-ID: <486A4741.7090406@eosc.edu> Happy July folks, Hard to believe that's here already, isn't it? I'm still wondering what happened to May! It's amazing how fast time goes by once you're out of school and working for a living. That must explain how I've gotten this old without even trying! I remember when I was a young, skinny, twenty something girl, working down at Ben Franklin, (a now extinct variety store we used to have here in town), and a local lady came in telling me that her class was going to have their 25th reunion that year. I distinctly remember, in my naive little mind, thinking, "Wow, that's old!" Now I'm sitting here thinking my class is going to have its 30th reunion next year, and we're not nearly as old as I gave her credit for. It's amazing how your perspective changes with time. Maybe by that time we'll have our new building finished and ready to show off, or we may even have the reunion here in the new Ballroom! Remember, Mildred is on vacation this week, so if you need anything from the Cafeteria, you'll have to talk to either me or Linda Fox. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Broccoli and rice casserole Blackeyed peas Corn Okra Tuna salad Potato chips And for dessert have some all American Apple Cobbler! July 2 Message-ID: <486B9997.7000405@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, I'm ready for a long weekend, aren't you? Of course, I'm always ready for that, but I'm hoping I'll be in the mood and have time to get some more stuff done around the house. We had a project going last night, working on closing up gaps in our henhouse. Night before last something got in there and killed one of our nice big hens and a young chicken and got back out without us seeing it or knowing what it was. I suspect a 'possum, but of course can't prove anything as the other chickens aren't talking, and the mama hen and her other babies refused to roost back in there last night, preferring to roost on the swing set. I even had to help a couple of them up there to her, as they just got up so far and sat there cheeping, which is like saying "Free Lunch" to any passing nocturnal predator. The only place we could figure out that the critter must've gotten in at was right under the eaves where there was a gap between the roof and the wall, so my husband got a chair and cut some hardware cloth to nail up there. I held the flashlight and handed him 4 nails at a time, since it worked out that about 3 of them would either fly off when he hit (at) them or he would drop them, so that left one to actually get nailed into place. I'll probably be able to refill the nailbag by going out there today and picking up all the dropped ones from last night. Our menu for today includes: Beef stroganoff Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Green beans Fried squash Broccoli cuts Baked potato bar Hot rolls Burritos with chili Chicken spaghetti And for dessert try some Mandarin Orange Cake. July 7 Message-ID: <48722BFC.5020108@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you all had a poppin' good 4th of July weekend and came back with your hearing and all your extremities intact. We went to 3 different fireworks displays so I feel like I'm still seeing sparkles even when my eyes are closed and hearing big booms in my sleep. Last Thurs. night we went to the Choctaw Nation display at the Talihina Indian Hospital, Friday night we went to the display at Robber's Cave State Park, put on every year by our local firefighters, and Saturday night we had a family get together at Buffalo Valley. As far as I know, all went well at all 3 displays, without anyone being seriously injured. Maybe everyone's pets can begin to relax again without all that popping going on. I noticed last week that our local Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant has closed up permanently. Then I heard a rumor that Braum's had bought the building, then I heard another rumor that no, Taco Bell had bought it, so either way it looks like Wilburton will be getting another new restaurant in the future. I know I'll miss KFC, but I have long wished that we'd get a Braum's here, (love that ice cream), or even a Taco Bell. (Of course, I'm going to feel really silly and disappointed if neither of these turns out to be true!) We had a really good turnout for our Sunday Buffet this past weekend, so it seems our efforts are paying off in that direction and the word is spreading about the good food we have available on Sunday afternoons. Be sure and come and try it if you get the chance. It's a great meal for a reasonable price. Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Cabbage Spanish rice Pinto beans Rolls Oven fried potatoes Chicken strips French fries And for dessert, cool off with our Soft Serve Ice Cream in Chocolate or Vanilla and a variety of Toppings to customize your creation. I'm feeling a bit draggy today after my daughter running into the bedroom at 2:00 last night yelling about a snake being in the chicken house. I yelled at Gary, my husband, who had the air conditioner going and was coccooned up in the blanket. His response was to yell that he had heard about it, and keep sleeping. We grabbed the flashlight and went out to the chicken house to see what we could do with the intruder, which turned out to be a large chicken snake draped over the rafters of my henhouse. What we could do with it consisted of sitting there watching it not move, shining the flashlight on it, waiting for it to move, shining the flashlight on it some more, waiting some more while it didn't move some more, and finally giving up and going back to bed. (That was me; Destiny stayed out there to poke at it with a broken golf club until it got down and slithered away under the wall.) At least it didn't get any of our baby chickens, that I know of. I thought we had all the holes patched up in the henhouse after something got in it the other night, but evidently there was still a snake sized hole somewhere that we'll have to find. This morning when Destiny and I mentioned something about the snake, Gary looked at us and said, "What snake?" He didn't remember a thing. July 10 Message-ID: <48762407.1030602@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we won the battle with the chicken snake last night. I had gone out for one last peek to check and make sure nothing was bothering my chickens, when I looked up and sure enough, there it was again draped along the rafters. I had to go get my husband out of bed, but I was determined he was going to get to see the thing this time. I don't know if it was abnormally long for a chicken snake, but to me it was LOOOOOOONG. Gary's weapon of choice in this battle wound up being a narrow (transplanting?) shovel. His method of attack involved a great deal of wild whacking and jumping around to the accompaniment of several unrepeatable words regarding his feeling for snakes in general. It took several whacks and jabs to get the snake down from the rafters, during which we developed several new ventilation holes in the adjoining shed, (shaped perfectly like the end of the shovel.) During this battle, in which my job was mostly to hold the flashlight and stay out of stomping distance, he also called for backup from my garden fork and the posthole diggers. Basically this poor snake (yes, I was starting to feel sorry for it by then) was garden tooled to death. And somehow we managed to do all that without having chickens freaking out and flying all over the place, or fertilizing our heads, since all this took place right underneath their roost. I guess that did answer his question though, "What snake?" Don't forget to attend the Pie Auction sponsored by the Red Oak Masonic Lodge to benefit the Latimer County Arts Council this Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Red Oak School Cafeteria. Various pies, cakes and other goodies, both edible and non-edible, along with a beautiful handmade quilt (made and donated by Mrs. Inger Raunikar), will be available to bid on. The Arts Council is a small, but dedicated group of citizens that have come together to bring special cultural, artistic and educational programs to the area schools. Plans are in the works to have the Tulsa Opera Company come and perform Hansel and Gretel during this coming school year, and several varied musical offerings are being planned for throughout the year. If you cannot attend this event, please consider making a donation to support the Council's efforts. It would be greatly appreciated and would go a long way to making a difference in the lives of area children. July 14 Message-ID: <487B6A16.6060601@eosc.edu> Hi again folks, I hope your weekend was wonderful. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly they go by, (even the longer ones.) And I discovered I may have been a little premature in reporting "victory over snakes in the henhouse" last week. I was about to go out to fasten up the chickens last Thursday night when I teasingly told my husband I'd let him know if I found him another snake to whack. His response to that idea was less than enthusiastic. Never in a million years did I think there would actually be another one out there...in the same spot. I hurried back in the house to tell him the "good news", and his response was, "You're kidding me!" I swore that no, I wasn't, but he still thought it was just my idea of a good joke on him. I finally managed to convince him that I was serious about this second snake, so he followed me out just to make sure. Sure enough, it was still there, not as big as the other one, but still nothing to sneeze at. He had managed to grab up the loppers somewhere while coming around the house, but put them down in favor of the old standby shovel he'd used the previous night. Having a little bit of recent experience to draw upon, he managed to get this one subdued in half the time, and with a lot less wild whacking, and then decided the loppers might just come in handy after all, if he only had 3 hands. Somehow though, he did manage to keep the snake pinned with the shovel while getting the loppers clamped onto it near its head. Dropping the shovel in the chickenhouse, he backed out of there with the snake pinched firmly in the loppers. He kept pinching it until he figured it had to be good and dead, then proceeded to fling it off into the weeds. I couldn't see the look on his face, but his whole body looked shocked when the loppers sailed right along with the snake! He had really had that snake pinched in those things and they didn't let go nearly as easily as he had thought they would. I had to give him the flashlight so he could go trudging off into the weeds and briars to retrieve the loppers, while trying not to step on any snakes, dead or alive. I'm hoping this will be all of our snakes adventures for quite some time, since we've killed a pair of them. The only question I have now is , Wonder how long it takes for snake eggs to hatch? Don't forget our slight price increase goes into effect today. On-campus diners will now pay $5.00 and people from off campus will pay $5.50. That's still a bargain for a good meal with several choices, along with a salad bar, drink and ice cream available. Susie Smith reported to me this morning that there had been a house fire this weekend in which a young family lost all their belongings. Justin Staley and Kim Morrow Staley and their 2 sons, Ricky and Anthony, are in need of household items, clothing donations and/or monetary donations to help them get back on their feet. One boy wears size 10-12 boys pants, and a size 3 1/2 shoe, and the other one wears size 12-14 pants and a 5 1/2 shoe. The mother wears a size 16 Women's clothes, and a 9 1/2 shoe, and the father wears a L-XL shirt, 34-36 pants, and a 10 1/2 shoe. Any donations may be brought to the Cafeteria and given to Susie for this family. Don't get me wrong, the fridge is several years old and has been really good, but when it went out, it went out. Of course, it happened at the hottest time of the year. That's the rule, you know. If your heater goes out it'll be at the coldest time of the year. Kind of a Murphy's law thing. Some days it just seems like my name should've been Murphy. Election day is today, so don't forget to go and cast your vote. I know there is a hot 4-way race for Sheriff going on, and the District 2 County Commissioner seat has 3 candidates to fill the post left vacant by the death of the previous commissioner, one of them being a previously retired commissioner who has decided to come out of retirement. If you haven't turned in the form that was in your paycheck envelope authorizing deductions for payment of your Support Staff Council Dues and the Flower Fund, please hurry and do so by tomorrow. If you need a form to do so, let me know and I'll round you up one. I strongly encourage you to pay your dues and participate in our Staff Council. It is your voice on campus and we need input from the people who work here. Our menu for today includes: Pork loin Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Bread sticks Baked beans Macaroni and cheese Zucchini and tomatoes Green peas Chili dogs Chips And for dessert have some Cherry Cobbler or a Cookie Bar. July 30 Message-ID: <489091DB.7090906@eosc.edu> Hi folks, My husband brought home a mini fridge he borrowed from a co-worker yesterday and we felt much more civilized immediately. Destiny and I had gone to the store and gotten a few groceries, (mostly small sizes of things so they'd fit), and we stocked it up. Even so it's going to be a major relief to have our refrigerator problems solved whenever it finally happens. I hope it doesn't take til Aug. 8th but people lived without refrigerators before. (I don't know how they did it, but they did, or so I've been told.) We had a Building Monitors Meeting to do some Safety Training last week, focusing on Fire Extinguisher training and CPR. I learned that nobody better try to die around me because doing all those chest compressions long enough and hard enough is hard work! One important fact that they taught us is that the first treatment for a child victim who is found not breathing is different than for an adult. Unlike an adult, a child is much more likely to have stopped breathing because of choking rather than a heart problem, so you do not want to use the defibrillator on them as quickly as you would an adult. It sounds like our Emergency Team in Mitchell has already had a situation to deal with, what with the gas line rupture yesterday and they came through really well, with some necessary help from our Maint. Dept. Good job, Jeanne', Diamond, Sheryl and Allen Kendrick. I hope we don't have an emergency in our building anytime soon, because Dana and I found out our batteries in our radios won't hold a charge. We're going to have to get them changed out and then we should be ready for anything! Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meatballs Mashed potatoes and white gravy Green beans Scandinavian blend vegetables Baked beans BBQ on a bun Baked beans And for dessert try some delicious Rocky Road Pudding. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Now if we can just survive August without having a meltdown, we'll be okay. Check out the attached cool double rainbow over the Fieldhouse picture I snapped yesterday during the little morning rain shower we had. We've got tomatoes back on the salad bar and for sandwiches once again, now that the word is that the "toxic veggies" were old hot peppers and my yummy tomatoes are exonerated. If it was hot peppers, I was sure never in any danger! I want to bite my food, I don't want my food to bite me. I noticed where Joel Kerns, an Eastern grad from back in the early '80's when I was in college here has been elected Sheriff of Pittsburg County. I guess we know where to find him now. Anyone interested in joining or learning more about our local P.A.W.S. (Partners for Animal Welfare Society) is welcome to attend our monthly meeting this evening at the Latimer County Public Library at 7:00. We'd be glad to have you. Our menu for today includes: Beef patties in brown gravy Garden blend rice Sweet potatoes Broccoli Mashed potatoes Breaded okra Rolls Chicken patties And for dessert have some yummy Cobbler.
