June 2 Message-ID: <48440F55.1040901@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Don't know how many of you have run into this little problem, but it got me a couple of times last week. My usual exit route is to cut down in front of the Fieldhouse and turn right to pass in front of the DOC dorm. When construction started on the new building, I noticed that the passage across campus had been blocked for safety purposes, but that didn't bother me since I don't usually go that way. (Yes, I had read the memo about this, but you know how some things don't sink in until they intrude into your part of the world.) Anyway, one day last week, I did my usual thing, cutting down in front of the Fieldhouse, intending to turn in front of the DOC dorm, only to find that passage blocked, so I had to make the loop and go out on the other side of the Fieldhouse. Being the creature of habit that I am, I did this twice last week before I decided that they really were going to leave that passage blocked off. At this time, if you're going to be on campus and need to go from one side to the other, it looks like you'll have to get back out on the highway and "travel" across instead of using the usual passage from one side to the other. On the up side of things, I noticed that while it may not be as large as the Great Wall of China, or as famous as the Berlin Wall, our little "Great Wall of Eastern" has once again been repaired. Construction workers were hard at it last week putting back together this giant, heavy jigsaw puzzle. I have always liked our little rock wall out front, and hated to see it damaged, but it's back in good shape now. With as many rocks as we have in this area, you'd think there'd be more rock walls around, but I'm afraid stone masons are few and far between. Our menu for today includes: Steak fingers Baked potatoes Mashed potatoes and white gravy Sweet peas Corn Deli selections Potato chips And for dessert, have a piece of Cheesecake. Yummm! June 3 Message-ID: <48455D47.5080400@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It looks like we're in for another warm day in what looks like a line of them coming at us, with some possible storms thrown in to make things interesting. The weather report showed a row of temperatures in the 90's coming up, so stake yourself out a cool spot somewhere. You'll probably be needing it. Our Upward Bound kids started their summer camp here yesterday, so we've got Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math and Science and Gear Up this week. Boy, that's a lot of kids to feed (and keep track of)! Our little menagerie grew recently when some friends gave us a spare male Muscovy duck they had that was having issues with his daddy over who was going to be "top duck" on the farm. At our house he is definitely "top duck", since right now he's the only duck we've got. We may have to buy him a small swimming pool so he can dabble around close to the house and not have to go all the way to the pond. Then it grew even more when our little mama hen hatched out 11 babies this past weekend. It's amazing to me how quickly you start to see hawks flying around when you have baby chicks or ducks around peeping. They must have really keen hearing to pick up on that sound from so high up. Thank goodness we have our little ones and their mama in a pen where nothing can bother them. If your kids are looking for something interesting to do this summer, try taking them to the Summer Reading Program at the Latimer County Public Library, 301 West Ada, Wilburton. The theme this summer is "Catch the Reading Bug" and most of the programs are about bugs, which are some interesting little critters. This Thurs. June 5 at 1:00, Magician Russell Turner will be performing, and the kids will get to meet Betty the Butterfly, and Willy the Book Worm. The program is free and open to the public, and is a great way to expose your children to the joys of reading. Our menu for today includes: Charbroiled patties with brown gravy Mashed potatoes and gravy Black eyed peas Winter blend vegetables Baby carrots Pasta with marinara sauce Hot rolls Corn dogs French fries And for dessert have a chocolatey favorite, Brownies. June 4 Message-ID: <4846B0B2.4000401@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I had the privilege of doing something yesterday that I guess I kind of take for granted, but most folks don't ever get the chance to do. I went to my mom's to help celebrate her 91st birthday. Most of the women in my family tend to be long-lived, I guess, so it's just something I expect to happen. I'm going to be really ticked off if I don't make at least 100! It's kind of hard to think of something to buy for a person that old, too. By that age, they've got pretty much everything they ever wanted, or have room for, and are ready to get rid of half of it. I finally decided on a tower type fan because she says she always has to sleep with a fan on. She informed me that she has fans, but I know how old most of them are and they could quit at any given moment, so I figured it wasn't too bad an idea. With the heat up close to triple digits already, we really need to be careful of our older citizens, babies, and any pets that have to be outdoors. The heat can really take a toll on them quickly so check on them often. For those of you who missed the Employee Recognition Program last week, you missed a special event. It's pretty amazing to think about the total years that people have put in here at Eastern. Cafeteria employee Charlie Langford and Technical Guru Keith Lewis have both put in 30 years apiece here, and Karen Clark is right behind them with 25 years to her credit to name just a few. I have to compliment my fellow Cafeteria workers on the wonderful food and strawberry punch that was served at the reception. It was out of this world. They always do a great job and are much appreciated. Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Pinto beans Oven fried potatoes Cabbage and smoked sausage Corn Rice Tuna salad Potato chips And for dessert have an Oreo Cream Bar. I know it does this all the time in Western Oklahoma, but do you suppose it's gotten lost? I looked out a while ago and saw stormy looking clouds like it could rain, but I'm afraid if it does rain here, it will blow into the next state before it lands! I noticed that we're down to fumes in our propane tank at the house the other day, and called in to see about getting a refill. We may be taking cold showers at the house until our loan comes through. I really think we're missing out by not having a wind powered heating and cooling system. Just in the past several days, we could've generated enough to heat all our water and probably stored up enough energy to cool the house for the rest of the summer. I'm thinking about attaching a big sail to my station wagon. I think if I could learn to use it right, I could save all kinds of gas mileage! Music lovers, don't forget to keep your calendar open for next Tues. night's concert by Les Brelsford at the Presbyterian Church at 7:00 p.m. I still have tickets for sale at $10.00 apiece. Proceeds from this event will go to support the Latimer County Arts Council to help them provide quality arts programs in all four county schools. They only gave a 100% chance of rain today, so there you go. Rudy was threatening last week that workers would have to dig up or make a tunnel under one of our Staff Council adopted flower beds here on campus, but I bet this will slow them down some. Sheryl and I were ready this weekend to come and dig up and rescue the flowers we've been babying and weeding around, but it turned out to be a false alarm, (so far). Seems like I'm always rescuing something. It's usually dogs. I guess I've branched out, huh? June 11 Message-ID: <484FE936.2030200@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Sorry for being missing in action yesterday, but I had various things I had to attend to, so I had a full day even if I wasn't at work. My daughter and her boyfriend were scheduled to help with the 4H Fishing Derby and since I'm their chauffeur, I had to go too. There was a pretty good turnout of little (and not so little) anglers. They even had something new thrown in to help pass the time. A casting contest was held, and believe it or not, Destiny got 2nd in the girls division. Of course, she's been fishing with her daddy since she was pretty little, so she has had some practice. After the fishing fun was over, we ate cats and dogs, (catfish and hot dogs), and visited with everyone. It was a fun event for all involved. If your kids are bored in the summer, 4H always has lots of fun activities for kids from 9-18, and most of them are free. Go by the County Barn just across the tracks on Hwy. 2 S and sign your kids up. Things took a different turn when Destiny and I both had to go in for dentist appointments. What started out as a routine cleaning turned into us both getting a small filling. Mine was behind a front tooth and it left my nose, lips and cheek numb for several hours. Have you ever tried to put lipstick on numb lips? You can't even tell you're making contact. Thank goodness the numbness had worn off pretty much in time for Les Brelsford's concert last evening. He and his accompanist, Kathy Brod, did an excellent job to finish up the Latimer County Arts Council's concert series for the season. We'll be scheduling several more concerts starting in the fall so be sure and watch for notices on them. I also wanted to report that our Bookstore is back up, restocked and running, so get in there and check out some of the new cool T-shirts, books, and other merchandise they've got now. Ali, Noreen and their crew are always glad to help you find what you need. Maybe that Father's Day gift you need is in there. June 16 Message-ID: <485681B3.2030907@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you all had a great Father's Day Weekend. I didn't realize til this morning that we had actually had a Friday the 13th, so I guess it was nothing to worry about. The only bad luck I can think of on that day was the fact that the Relay for Life got called on account of approaching storms at 1:00 or 2:00 that night. Our hardworking Eastern Relay team had definitely made an impression on everyone though, (who doesn't notice girls running around in coconut bras and grass skirts?), winning best campsite with their "Luau for a Cure" theme and decorations. I hope I don't leave out anyone, but the team included Trisha, London and Amanda White, Ali Martinez, Anne Hester, Gwen McMillen and Judy Bornheim. I split my time with the 4H group my daughter was with. They're always a fun group, and managed to win the Spirit Stick for the event. They also managed to win the Ms. Relay contest in spite of the entertaining efforts of Eastern's candidate "Leila" (aka Robert Miller) who really put on quite a performance, even donning a coconut bra and grass skirt, in his, oops, I mean her, efforts to sway contest announcer Elvis Presley, (Todd Minshall). Also, I'd like to report a missing sidewalk. Evidently the construction project, or in this case, the deconstruction project removed the whole sidewalk along the East side of the Student Union Building, so don't be surprised at having to take a detour around that whole area if you're trying to get from the Student Union to the Library Building. And remember to be very careful when you're anywhere near any of the ongoing construction areas. They say you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet, but we don't want to break any legs (or anything else) to get this new building built. And the news is still bad for tomato lovers, (myself included), as we will still not be serving any fresh tomatoes due to the Salmonella scare. Being a big fan of tomatoes myself, I hope this is resolved quickly. But for cucumber lovers, Irene brought garden fresh cucumbers again this year, so if you like a good fresh cucumber call over here and let her know you want some. Our menu for today includes: Steak fingers Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli cuts Macaroni and tomatoes Sweet peas Baked potatoes Hot rolls Corn dogs French Fries And for dessert have some delicious Ice Cream and Toppings. (Be sure and try our new flavor...Raspberry Topping. It's yummy!) Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... June 17 Message-ID: <4857CDFA.3080001@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we got rained on again, didn't we? All this rain and dampness caused a near Cat-astrophe at my house yesterday evening, when my little wooden table I'd made several years ago that had my little mama cat and her two kittens nested up in a wooden box atop it collapsed, sending box, babies and all out into the rain. Fortunately it wasn't coming down too hard at the time and I noticed it fairly quickly, so I was able to get out there and scoop them up before they got too drenched. We got them snuggled up in a nice dry towel in the house and they were much happier. Our chickens are not enjoying all this rain much, either, but the duck is fine with it. He's in his element. Maybe this rain will help save some of the plants that had to be transplanted from the flower bed at the back corner of the Student Union that was affected by the sidewalk removal project. I'm afraid there's not much to be done for the poor trees next to the Fieldhouse though. There are about 4 of them in a row, and it looks like all but the first one are just about dead. They seem to be coming up from the base but they tops seem to have died for some reason. I hate to see that happen, because in a hot Oklahoma summer, (and you know it'll be here soon), a good shade tree can be a lifesaver. We've really lost a lot of our wonderful trees from this area in the past few years, due to ice storms, droughts, tornadoes, pests, construction, etc. If you get a chance to plant a tree, it's a great investment in the future. Belated birthday wishes go out to Betty Wharton, nursing instructor at our Idabel campus, who celebrated a birthday yesterday, and Happy Birthday wishes for today go out to Katharyn Couch, Criminal Justice and Psychology instructor here at our Wilburton campus. When I saw the email Steve Akin sent out about next year's Photo Club trip to Europe I had to look at it just out of curiosity, even though I'm a big homebody who's never even been on an airplane. I have to admit a trip to England and Scotland sounded fascinating to me, especially when they mentioned Stonehenge and Loch Ness. I've always been fascinated by stories of ancient places and mysterious creatures. I forgot about the expanded portion of Roy's being opened yesterday until I went in for a gallon of milk and wow! June 23 Message-ID: <485FBB65.40204@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow, how did the weekend fly by so fast? It seemed like I was really busy and got a lot done at the house, but had a lot more still to do and had to come back to work instead. Oh well, it's not like housework will disappear on its own, is it? It started out to be a wild night last night, too. We had another mama hen and 9 baby chicks show up, so that gave us 2 mama hens and 20 babies! We moved the first batch into a bigger pen on the ground and put the new smaller ones who looked like they had just hatched within the last couple of days into the smaller pen that's up off the ground. About 10:30 I heard one of the hens squawking for all she was worth and I grabbed the flashlight and ran outside to see what was going on. Chickens may make a lot of noise in the daytime, but they don't squawk at night for no reason, and sure enough there was a raccoon that had actually gotten into the pen with the batch of chickens on the ground and was running around dragging the mother hen around by a mouthful of her feathers. He let her go when I showed up and I raised the lid to the pen and he ran for it. I couldn't believe he had gotten in there since the lid had a latch on it, but it was off to one side and he managed to force the other side up enough to squeeze his very determined and hungry self in for a try at a chicken dinner. I put a bungee cord on the other side after that, made sure the latch was fastened and went in the house thinking all would be fine. Wrong. After about 10 minutes, I heard another squawk and went running again, to see the rotten raccoon back with his paw stuck through the chicken wire trying his luck that way. He did manage to kill one of the babies that time, but didn't get to eat it, and again he had to run for it. This time we put the little family in the henhouse with our other big chickens, and things settled down for the night. I wonder if that raccoon was trying to tell me I didn't have any cat food out, so he'd have to try and snack on something else? Yes, I still like raccoons, I just don't like them to eat my chickens! Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meatballs Garlic bread Navy beans Corn bread Steamed red potatoes Broccoli with cheese sauce Hot dogs French fries Baked beans And for dessert have a summertime favorite, Ice Cream and Toppings. June 24 Message-ID: <486109BF.60309@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you're having a great day and not getting too hot. It looks like a whole string of 90's coming up this week, but on the up side, the nights are in the lower 70's and that's just about perfect to me. If it wasn't for the mosquitos out at night, it would feel wonderful to sit out in the evening and watch the stars come out, and the fireflies light up, while listening to the crickets and the whippoorwills. To heck with the mosquitos, just break out the bug spray and sit out and enjoy the evening anyway! I think it's the best part of the day. According to my calendar, Happy Birthday wishes are in order today for Leland Walker. I hope he has a great day, and gets a big steak for dinner. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Scalloped potatoes Corn Green beans Cabbage with bacon Navy beans Hot rolls Enchiladas And for dessert have some Coconut Crunch. June 25 Message-ID: <4862584C.2040509@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, it's that time of year when it starts to sound like war has erupted all over the county, but don't panic, it just means that the fireworks stands have opened up and kids are out blowing stuff to kingdom come all over the place. Not a real popular time of year with most pets, especially some dogs. Be sure and keep yours in a safe, secure place when people start shooting off fireworks withing hearing range, as some pets can become very nervous, and may even become terrified enough to run away from the noise without even realizing that they don't know where they're going, and they may not even be thinking well enough to watch for oncoming traffic. If you have a pet that is extremely nervous around fireworks, you might try putting them in a room with a radio going to hide the sound of the explosions. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to an Eastern institution, Joyce Bills, our Human Resources/Payroll guru. She's been at Eastern waaaay longer than she'd like me to mention, and is always so helpful and pleasant to deal with, as are all the ladies in the Human Resources?Payroll office, because after all, they learned from the best. Have a wonderful day, Joyce. You deserve it! Our menu for today includes: Beef tips Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli and rice casserole Corn Squash Hot rolls Frito chili pie And for dessert have a taste of summer, a big helping of Peach Cobbler. A squirt of ice cream on top and you've got the perfect summer dessert! Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... And like Joyce, she's been here longer than she would like me to mention too. Don't forget about the last Summer Reading Program at the Latimer County Public Library today at 1:00. This free program will feature world class juggler and entertainer, Paul Phariss and should be a lot of fun for kids of all ages. And if you're looking for something to do this evening, we'll be having our monthly PAWS meeting, also at the library, at 7:00 p.m. If you like dogs, and would like to learn more about our group and perhaps volunteer some time to help homeless dogs, please come and join us. We'd be glad to have you. June 30th Message-ID: <4868F40F.7090804@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you all enjoyed your weekend as much as I did. I felt like I got a whole lot of stuff done around the house, but I can still look around and not be able to tell it. (I know a lot of you can relate to that. Housework is one thing that never seems to go away. Not at my house anyway. There's never enough hours in the day or days off in the week to catch up on everything at once.) Just a reminder, Mildred Whisenhunt, our Cafeteria manager, is on vacation this week, the lucky sucker, probably catching up on her own housework, so if you have any questions or need to talk to one of us, you'll probably be dealing with Linda Fox, the Assistant Cafeteria manager, or myself. Talking to Linda Fox and Susie Smith, who worked our Sunday buffet yesterday, it sounds like we had quite a good crowd of happy customers. They enjoyed the good meal and getting to sit and visit with friends. From what I hear this used to be the happening place on Sunday afternoons several years ago, with a packed house quite frequently on Sundays after church. Maybe it will get there again, if people don't get discouraged by having to find a way through the maze of construction zones and equipment. Once they make it in, they know it was worth it, though. Our menu for today includes: Chicken fried steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Sweet peas Corn Spaghetti with meat sauce Bread sticks And for dessert cool off with some of our wonderful Ice Cream and Toppings.
