It's really been raining! I am going to have to learn to be more specific in my wishing. I was really wishing for some Spring weather. Of course, in my mind, I was thinking of lazy, warm afternoons with the birds singing and the smell of blossoms on the breeze, and comfortable evenings where you could sit outside and hear the frogs croaking out at the pond. What did we get? Rain, lots of it, and tornado warnings! I guess I forgot that that's also a big part of Oklahoma Springtime weather. So now they tell me we're supposed to have a snowstorm later today! Oh brother! Why does it seem like our closets need to be on a revolving rack? We have to keep switching from season to season, back and forth, and can never seem to outguess Mother Nature on what she'll pull out of her bag of tricks next. Oh well. Us Okies wouldn't have it any other way. We'd probably get bored. Our menu for today includes: Chicken parmesan with pasta Mashed potatoes and gravy Green peas Corn Baked potato bar Hot rolls Tacos Refried beans Spanish rice Nacho chips with picante sauce And for dessert, try some of our Ice Cream and Toppings. Have a great, cold/hot/wet/dry/snowy/rainy Oklahoma day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We will have 2 opportunities on Thursday for the McAlester students to take advantage of this opportunity to get some valuable information and also add to your activity points as a participant in the SSS program. The workshops in McAlester will be in Room 130 of the Wanda Bass Building at 4:00 and at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 6th. The Wilburton workshop will be at 3:00 p.m. in Room 130 of Johnston Hall on Wednesday, March 5. Refreshments will be served. A job portfolio is an invaluable tool for all students getting ready to enter the job market. Portfolios are coming back into use because they give the employer a better picture of the worker as a well rounded individual. In this workshop you will learn how to use this tool to your best advantage. Part of the portfolio content is a resume, and tips on building a good resume will also be included. I hope you will make plans to attend. In the event that the room assignment has changed at the McAlester Campus, please look for the signs or ask at the reception desk. Please call Sue Lovett at 918-465-1823 for more information. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It looked like it went all around and under Tulsa, but pretty much missed the actual city. All those white cars that were in the parking lot this morning are slowly changing back to their original colors as the sun melts the snow off. (Maybe my antenna will be able to go back all the way down again now.) I saw where Red Oak schools were closed for today, but not any other local ones that I could spot. I see by the EOSC calendar that there's a Money Tree Game scheduled for this evening in the Ballroom. Let's get some of those seeds to Neil Enis up in the greenhouse and try to grow some of those things. And someone save me some seeds too. Who couldn't use a money tree or two growing handily nearby? No more budget crisis! (And people try to tell you money doesn't grow on trees!) As long as I can get back up the hill to my house where I can hibernate, I'll be fine. I'd hate to get snowed out though! It makes me feel sorry for the kids in the dorms who are away from home and can't get back due to the weather, but then again, they might think of it as a lot of fun. I just love the weekly quotes that John Fazekas has been posting since he's been with us. I really liked the one he sent out this week by Abraham Lincoln, about how everyone can handle adversity, but if you want to test someone's character give them power. That makes me wonder about the upcoming presidential race and how the candidates that are still in the running will do things, what they'll change, for better or worse, and what will remain the same. Linda Fox just came in and said the snow is starting outside. Get ready! Our menu for today includes: Steak Potato wedges Green beans Corn Sliced carrots Baked potato bar Chili and cheese conies French fries And for dessert have some Ice Cream and Toppings. March 7 Message-ID: <47D167EA.7020904@eosc.edu> Hi everyone, I hope you're all here today, as the early morning report that campus was closed turned out to be false. Someone is probably sitting at home giggling over having pulled a fast one on some of us and gotten a free day out of the deal. The roads were not nearly as bad as I was afraid they would be. I just knew all that slush would freeze up overnight and make driving really hazardous, but I guess the ground temperatures were sufficient to keep that from happening. As I was leaving yesterday at 3:00 a bunch of the students were already out getting a snowball fight started in the parking lot. If I'd been closer, I might've thrown some at them myself and then peeled out before they could retaliate! It was sure tempting! As far as I know the Evening with Dottie Concert is still on for tonight at 7:00 at the Presbyterian, so come on out for an excellent evening of music and entertainment, and support a wonderful cause. The concert is sponsored by the Latimer County Arts Council, a small group of people who try to provide arts education to the local schools. Saturday night, don't forget to set your clocks ahead (Spring Forward) for Daylight Savings Time. I know Kelly already sent out an email on this, but I'm hoping that if I am exposed to the idea enough times, it will really stick in my head and I'll actually remember to do it. And come out and have Sunday Lunch with us here in the Cafeteria. We will be starting our Sunday Lunch Special this Sunday. We'll be serving from 11:00 to 1:30, and will be putting out a great spread for you to choose from. For only $6.75 plus tax per person, it's a deal that's hard to beat. March 10 Message-ID: <47D54CE8.7010905@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you all enjoyed the weekend. I really enjoyed having an extra hour of daylight yesterday evening. Unfortunately not everyone is enjoying themselves. We've got 3 people out today trying to get over whatever bug they've come down with, so the rest of us are stretched pretty thin. I was out trying to help make sack lunches a while ago, so if there are any snafus in that area, please remember I'm kinda new at that particular job. (If we see any people standing around with signs that say "Will Work for Food" we just might take them up on it today!) Many thanks to all of you who came out for our first Sunday Lunch Buffet yesterday. We had a good turnout and hope to gain attendance as the word spreads. From what I hear, the Sunday Buffet was a big thing here back in the early '80's, so maybe we can revive an old tradition, and give people another good choice of somewhere to eat on Sunday afternoon. We serve from 11:00 to 1:30, or as Ruth Brelsford puts it, "from after Catholic church til after Baptist church". Remember word of mouth is the best advertisement, so tell your friends about our Sunday Lunch Buffet. Belated birthday wishes to Gail Richey who celebrated her birthday on Friday March 7, and to Noreen Dollins who celebrated hers on the 9th. Our menu for today includes: Lasagna Broccoli with cheese sauce Carrots Corn Baked potato bar Garlic bread Pizza Broccoli and cheese soup And for dessert, have some of our Soft Serve Ice Cream. March 11 Message-ID: <47D6A085.6080301@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I worked yesterday evening filling in for sick folks here in the Cafeteria, so got to come in later this morning, only to find that parking was limited in the area around the back of the Cafeteria, Sullivan Hall and the Library Building due to the installation of the new elevator shaft in Sullivan today. (I usually get here around 6 a.m. and have my pick of parking, where today I had to park way over where our radio station used to be and will be again if we're lucky.) This will be a major step in a positive direction for our campus to come into compliance with handicap accessibility needs, so please be patient while the work is in progress. It will all be worth it in the long run. (The elevator up to the Ballroom is out in our building, and believe me, you soon realize what wonderfully handy things they are when you don't have the use of one anymore.) Your friends in Student Services are once again bringing you a musical offering, presenting the band ICE540 in the Ballroom this evening at 6:30. Be sure and come out and hear what these Eastern students can do. When you think about it, it is truly amazing the amount and variety of talent on this campus. One of the biggest challenges facing students today is financing their college education. With that in mind, the Student Support Services program will present a workshop today on Budgeting. Learn some valuable tips and get help setting up your budget. Kathy Howe will give you useful information on how to make the most of the money you have. The workshop is today at 3:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall, Room 130. There will be refreshments, and door prizes, so come and join us. Some instructors are giving extra points for attending the workshop, so check with your instructors. Also, as always, the SSS program will give its participants extra points toward the Grant Aid Scholarship. (It is time to disburse that money again, so you can get a jump-start on your activity points by attending the workshops.) This workshop will also be presented on the McAlester Campus at the Wanda Bass Building, Room 111 at 4:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 p.m. tomorrow, March 13. Those boys really have some talent. I still don't know the significance, if any, of the name ICE540. That might be good for the poor guy who doesn't get to say anything to explain in the future. Thanks to Student Services, Dougo and anyone else who brings fine entertainment to our campus. Be sure and come out and join us for our first Pizza and Pasta Buffet Night in the Cafeteria this evening. We serve from 4:30 to 6:15 so you'll have plenty of time to eat before going to church or wherever. The price is $6.50 plus tax and it covers pizza, pasta, salad bar, your choice of drinks, and soft serve ice cream. Wanted to let everyone know too, that Danny Foster is back with us. He's finally come out of his semi-retirement recuperation period and is looking for stuff to fix. We'll probably be seeing a lot of him over here, because we've always got something that needs fixing. He ought to be full of energy after his long (boring) rest. We're glad to have him back. I may put out tomorrow's menu later today, as I plan to try and attend the Grant Writing Workshop at the McAlester Campus in the morning. Maybe I'll find out how to get scads of money and we'll be able to do all kinds of things around here. I hope I can at least find out how to put in for a grant or two for PAWS. We always need donations of money or volunteers to help us take care of all the dogs. (We usually have plenty of donated dogs, it's everything else we need.) The program is from 9:00 to 12:00 and is free. For more information on the Grant Writing for Beginners Workshop, contact Barbara Gilbertson at the McAlester Campus or email her at bgilbertson at eosc.edu. At one point during the class, I turned to Anne Hester who was also there from the Wilburton Campus, and commented that the wind really seemed to be blowing as it seemed to be hitting the building in gusts. She calmly told me, "That's not the wind, that's the bombs." Not realizing we were in a war zone, I had to have that explained. Evidently the Ammunition Plant was detonating old bombs? and the sound and vibration of it was reaching the McAlester Campus with a feeling and sound like that of extreme wind gusts. I would've felt better if she'd just let me go on thinking it was really windy, and not known about the bombs going off nearby. She says that's why her dog goes so crazy. I don't wonder. Now I just wonder that there's a sane dog (or cat) in the McAlester area! I also got to attend the wonderful Spring Concert last night accompanied by my daughter. We were a little late, but came in thinking we were early due to my having misread the starting time in the paper. (Either that or they did report that it started at 7:30 instead of 7:00.) It was great to see that there were so many people in attendance. Maybe the word is spreading about the quality of the performances put on by our Music Dept. and the fact that it is free and open to the public. Luke Forwoodson did his usual awesome job on his solo performance in Old Man River, as did Kendra Click and the other soloists, and all the musicians and vocalists. I am just continually amazed though, at the that deep, old voice coming out of that young man when Luke sings. And I know it's time for her to graduate and get on with the rest of her life, but I hate to think that we're losing Kendra Click. Her singing is as sweet as her personality and she will be missed greatly here. I'm really looking forward to the upcoming musical "Guys and Dolls" when we'll get to hear more from some of these performers. Keep your calendars opened for April 24-26 for this fine performance. Our menu for today includes: Smoked sausage Crispy cubed potatoes Pinto beans Turnip greens California blend vegetables Cornbread Hot rolls Steak fingers Gravy And for dessert try our Cookie Bar. March 17 Message-ID: <47DE868F.3040704@eosc.edu> Happy St. Patrick's Day folks! Whether you're Irish or not, you'd better be wearing your little bit of the green today or you're likely to get a pinch from someone! I thought we might have green eggs this morning, but I guess maybe the cooks thought that might be a bit unappetizing. (Not on St. Paddy's Day, surely!) Most of our students and faculty are enjoying Spring Break this week, but DOC is still here, as are some of our students, (maybe ball teams?), and Cafeteria workers, of course, and the offices will be open Monday and Tuesday, and then close up for what's left of Spring Break and Good Friday, which happen to fall together this year. According to an email I received Easter is always the first Sunday following the first full moon after the Spring Equinox. That full moon falls on March 20 this year, causing Easter Sunday to fall on March 23, the earliest it has fallen since 1913. The next time it comes this early will be in the year 2228, so I wouldn't bet on being around for that one, unless you expect to be reincarnated by then. Our menu for this St. Patrick's day Monday is: BBQ chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Seasoned rice Corn Green beans Hot rolls Corn dogs French fries And for dessert have a luscious piece of Cheesecake! March 18 Message-ID: <47DFD99E.1060203@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, the rain is coming down outside and in! We seem to have sprung a leak outside my office with all this rain going on outside. A new building is sounding better and better. I guess our March winds have died down for the time being and the April showers are giving us a preview of coming attractions. I'm ready for the May flowers already, myself. I have noticed a lot of blooming things already, though. Even my forsythia finally put out some blooms. I really need to get out and prune it later after it's done blooming, since they say they only bloom on new growth, and mine is mostly old wood. And that lawn next to that church across from Alco is absolutely gorgeous with all the purple blossoms. I think it's just henbit, which is actually considered a weed, but it sure looks beautiful the way that lawn is just covered in it. Recent EOSC family birthdays include Todd Blocker of the Agriculture Dept., who celebrated a birthday on the 15th, and Lynn Gammons, of the Bookstore, who celebrated hers on the 16th. Upcoming birthdays include Kathy Howe of Student Support Services, on Thurs. March 20, and Dr. Billye Givens on Fri. March 21. They've already got a jump on having a good birthday, since they'll be on Spring Break. Don't forget we will still be having our Wednesday evening Pizza and Pasta Buffet from 4:30 to 6:00, and our Sunday Lunch Buffet, from 11:00 to 1:00 this week. Even though there aren't any college classes, the Cafeteria staff is still here to serve the Dept. of Corrections Academy who are still having classes as usual this week, and any EOSC students who might be spending Spring Break on campus, as well as any off campus guests who might show up to eat. As a matter of fact, we'd like to encourage those of you who may not have ever eaten here, to come and try us out. You'll get a good meal for a fair price, with a well stocked salad bar, dessert, and soft serve ice cream. You can't beat a deal like that! Our menu for today includes: Roast beef Mashed potatoes and gravy Carrots Sweet peas Hot rolls Meat and cheese nachos And for dessert have a yummy helping of Strawberry Shortcake. Okay, so students may not relate to this, but I'm pretty sure all the "grownups" on campus will know what I mean. I was surprised to find that the public school kids had an extra day off today. I guess since Good Friday fell during their Spring Break, they got an extra day off today. I was trying to make my daughter get up and go to school and she kept insisting there wasn't any. I guess she knew what she was talking about. I hope the Easter Bunny came to see all of you. I was still finding eggs hidden in my car this morning, courtesy of my sneaky daughter, who went out last night and hid about 3 in it. I still haven't found that third one yet. I hope I find it before the smell gives it away. Or if I don't, I hope at least that it's one of the ones she cooked, not one of the raw ones she colored and hid, too. Ugh! I don't even want to think about finding that hidden in my car in a few weeks. That would possibly be worse than the bottle of chocolate milk she left in there last year and I didn't notice it til the lid blew off and the smell took over! Whew! I've been meaning to try and remember to get the word out to our female students (I hope) that there have been a couple of earrings found in the Cafeteria lately, so if you're missing one of yours, you might check with Irene, our cashier at lunch, and see if we have your lost bling. It wouldn't hurt to bring the other one for identification purposes, either. This workshop will be in the form of a video and we will have refreshments available. The workshop will also be presented in McAlester tomorrow, March 27 at 4:00 and at 6:00 in Room 111. So far we have not had very much participation from the McAlester students. Your participation in the workshops as an SSS member ensures that we can keep presenting them there. Also, many of you have told me that you would like to be active in the program but you cannot come all the way from McAlester, so we are coming there to make it easier for you to be active and be eligible for the grant aid. FYI: I am in the process of developing the list for the Trio Grant Aid Scholarship. All those participants who joined our program in the summer or fall of 2007 are being considered this time. Several of those on the list have NO CONTACTS and will not receive the grant unless the student comes to my office, Johnston Hall, Room 115, to visiit with me. Also, visits with Kathy Howe, Room 118, or June Haynes, Room 111 will count. But the most points are received for workshop attendance, cultural trips and tutoring. Even if you don't work with a tutor, you can still use our facilities. It is a quiet place to work and the computers are available. If you need further information, please call me at 465-1823. March 27 Message-ID: <47EBB4C4.1070307@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I had a message on my phone this morning from Mildred's husband, Tony, letting us know that she has been admitted to the Wilburton hospital with pneumonia. Evidently her bronchitis worsened and became pneumonia. We're all hoping she has a quick recovery, as this has had her pretty miserable. Keep her in your prayers, and I'll keep everyone updated on her condition as I find out more. My husband got out one of my old EOSC annuals last night and was looking for a guy he's been working with who went to school here, John Whitten, class of 1982? Of course, after he got the thing out, I couldn't resist looking at it myself just to see who I could see that I remembered or know now that I didn't know then. I saw several current Eastern employees in the book, including Susie Smith, Jeff Weems, Karen (Carden) Clark, and Brenda (Bohanon) Kennedy. I had to laugh looking at one part where a student commuting from McAlester was talking about the ridiculously high cost of gas at $1.03 a gallon! That was the good old days! Maybe in twenty-something more years, we'll be longing for the days when gas was $3.00 a gallon, or maybe it will have been completely replaced by converted used cooking oil or solar power! In order to apply, SSS students need to come by my office, Room 115 in Johnston Hall to sign up. Your signature is all that is required. Once I have those signatures, I will send the names to Financial Aid to check on Pell Grant and Unmet Need qualifiers. Come and sign up if you are an SSS participant who joined the program in the fall of 2007. Students who signed on in the program before that time were given the opportunity last semester to sign up. If you feel that you were not contacted last semester and should have been, please come by and we will look into it. Remember that the students must meet guidelines, and those guidelines will determine eligibility. Any questions you have can be answered by calling me at 918-465-1823 or by coming to my office. I will be out of the office on Monday, March 31 through April 2, but will be happy to hear from you on Thursday. The sign-up sheet will be in my office. The students who qualify will be receiving a pell grant, have at least $400 in unmet need through financial aid, and an active participant in the SSS program. I will be out of town Monday through Wednesday next week, but June Haynes or Kathy Howe will be able to help you. June's extension is 822 and Kathy's is 860. Some students do not use the tutoring lab or any of our services because they feel they are doing OK on their own, but we still have to require that the students participate because we are only funded for 250 students. The vast majority of students at Eastern qualify, so when students who are participants do not use the services, they are taking the opportunity away from others who are not in the program but could be. When you think about it, all scholarships have a requirement. Sometimes it is just good grades, other times it is dependent on the major your in or any number of things. Ours does not require that the students make high grades, but participation in the project is what keeps us funded. We have to report on the students activities to the feds, so come in and let us help even it is just to attend a workshop or go on a trip. March 31 Message-ID: <47F0FCB3.90409@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It sure looks cloudy out today, but so far, it's not raining. I was surprised at the rain we got during the night this weekend. I didn't even realize it had been raining until I woke up and heard splashing from outside. It did turn off to be pretty nice, though. I hope you all got to get out and enjoy the spring weather. Everything is sure greening up everywhere! And just look around campus at the beautiful flowering trees! That ought to get you in a good mood for the week! I hear Mildred has been released from the hospital and is taking a few more days to recuperate at home before coming back to this madhouse. She needs to regain some strength before attempting to get back in the saddle here again. Campus will be swarming with young students tomorrow when we host the 29th Annual Scholastic Contest. I hope the weather is nice for this event as various groups have planned to have booths set up outside to sell refreshments to raise money for their various clubs and projects. Staff Council is planning on having a booth to tempt your sweet tooth with various baked goods and sweet treats to raise money for the Annual Picnic. If any of you can bring some bagged-up-for-sale homemade goodies, we would appreciate it greatly. Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Sweet peas Baby carrots Hot rolls Steak sandwich French fries And for dessert create your own ice cream dream with our soft serve Ice Cream and Toppings.
