Attention all Mail Box Holders at Eastern,
As of today, May 1st., the United States Post Office will longer be running the post office at Eastern. Eastern has taken over that responsibility and will offer most of the same services as before. In the future, we hope to offer even more services for your convenience.
If you are a mail box holder at Eastern, your box rent is due today. We have adopted the same policies as the post office. If your box rent is not paid by the close of business today, we will have to block your box and hold your mail. If your box rent is not paid within 10 days, your mail will be sent back to the sender and we will close your box. So, please stop by not later than 12:00 noon and take care of your box rent to avoid interruption. 
If you plan on using another service please return your box key(s) and put in a change of address.
If you have any questions please stop by or call me.

May Day!  May Day!

And it really is May Day today, but as a distress call, we could've used 
that term yesterday even more I think, with all the phones, computers 
and time clocks malfunctioning due to the electrical problem that 
occurred Tues. night when an adventurous, (and I'm pretty sure, now 
deceased) raccoon climbed some high voltage wires at the PSO 
substation.  (Come to think of it, it was pretty peaceful and quiet 
without the phone ringing all day, not really distressing at all.)  It 
does limit what you can accomplish as far as work when your computer 
just won't come up though.  It seems like everything is on computer anymore.

It's hard to believe that another year has come and gone already, and 
that graduation is tomorrow night!  Once again, I find myself thinking 
about the students that will be graduating and leaving us.  I always 
seem to find myself looking for some of them again the next year, and 
then have to remember that they have completed their time at Eastern, 
graduated and gone on to further their education, or to a career.  We 
wish them all the best and want them to know they will be missed.  Come 
back and visit at Homecoming or any time.

Our menu for today includes:

            Spaghetti with meat sauce
            Crispy cubed potatoes
            Carrots
            Green beans
            Hot rolls
            Burritos with chili and cheese

Hi folks,

Congratulations, graduates!  You've finally made it!  All those long 
hours of classes, homework,  and cramming for tests has finally paid 
off.  Next fall, you'll be going on somewhere else, but there'll still 
be a little part of you here at Eastern, and part of Eastern will go on 
with you wherever you go.  We all hope you've enjoyed your time here 
with us and that you've gotten the most out of your classes and 
experiences here.  We're rooting for you!  Go do great things!

The weather last night and early this morning made me glad that 
graduation is going to be held in the field house rather than outdoors.  
There was some ear shattering thunder around 4:30 this morning that sent 
a couple of my little dogs scurrying to get under the covers and had me 
wishing I could've stayed there myself.  The light show was spectacular 
with bright flashes every second or two followed by the booming of 
thunder loud enough to make you jump, even if you did know it was coming.  

Our menu for today includes:

          Chicken fried steak
          Mashed potatoes and gravy
          Italian blend vegetables
          Green beans
          Hot rolls
          BBQ sandwiches
         

And for dessert we have a variety of Cake Choices.

Happy Cinco de Mayo folks,

I hope you had a great weekend.  I really enjoyed mine.  I got to go to 
some good rummage sales, our PAWS adoption day, and yesterday I even 
climbed the caves at Robber's Cave State Park with my daughter and her 
boyfriend, (very slowly, but I did make it without killing myself.)

Please make note that if you will still be on campus this coming Friday 
evening, the Cafeteria will not be serving a meal that evening.  We will 
issue sack lunches to anyone who would have been eating dinner here, and 
these should be picked up by 2:00.   Please pass the word to anyone you 
know of who might fall into this category. 

It's encouraging to see activity finally starting on the new building 
we've been waiting on for so long on campus.  I hated to see the row of 
trees come down first thing, though, but  I did look on the website and 
see the illustration of the new building, and noticed that there are 
some trees in the drawing, so that made me feel better.  

Our menu for lunch today includes:

            Sweet peas
            Macaroni and tomatoes
            Baked potato bar

Hi folks,

I hope you brought your umbrellas today, and you'd better have them 
handy tomorrow, too.  The weather report predicted an 80% chance of rain 
today, but when I looked outside a while ago, it was 100% 
raining....hard!   (And that was what they predicted for tomorrow, so 
imagine what it'll do then!) 

Slightly belated Happy Birthday wishes go out to newly engaged Anne 
Hester, our nursing grant coordinator, and Neil Enis, our greenhouse 
guy, for their birthdays yesterday.   (Neil may be so tired what with 
new twin daughters at his house, that he may not even realize he had a 
birthday, and Anne's probably got "wedding on the brain"!)

Be sure and bring some $ tomorrow and check out the Staff Council 
sponsored Jewelry Sale in the East Cafeteria.  Remember, Mother's Day is 
this Sunday, and it's not too late to get a nice graduation present for 
that special graduate.  And pick up something for yourself while you're 
at it.  You're bound to see something you like, and the prices are very 
affordable.  

Once again, please remember to spread the word that the Cafeteria will 
not be open this Friday evening for dinner.  If you were planning on 
eating here, you will need to pick up a sack lunch before 2:00 Friday 
afternoon.

Hi folks,

Well, we're midway through finals week and I'm sure quite a few of our 
graduates are getting ready to leave Eastern and get on with the rest of 
their lives.  Some may realize how precious these last few days here 
really are and stick around the rest of the week saying goodbyes, and 
making more memories to take with them when they do move on.  And I'm 
sure the faculty is ready to heave a sigh of relief and start their 
summer break, which somehow is never as long as it seems like it should 
be. 

My crew and I went to the Wilburton High School and Jr. High Spring 
Vocal Concert yesterday evening and enjoyed some fine performances by 
some talented young singers and musicians.  I hope to see some of these 
talented young entertainers attending Eastern and participating in our 
musical and theatrical productions in the future.      

Don't forget to come and check out the Jewelry Sale in the East 
Cafeteria today.  Mother's Day is this Sunday and you know Mom would 
love to have a new piece of jewelry to show off, especially  if it comes 
from one of her favorite people in the world, her child.  

And here's my daily reminder that we're not going to be serving dinner 
in the Cafeteria this Friday evening.  You will need to pick up a sack 
lunch in the Cafeteria before 2:00 on Friday if you want to eat here.

Hi folks,

Today started off kind of drizzly and is still somewhat cool, but should 
warm up some before too long, and the drizzling has stopped, at least 
temporarily.

My computer has been on a mission to drive me crazy lately, (I know, I 
know, it's not a far trip for me, but anyway...)  At some point every 
day my screen goes black.  Scared me to death the first time it did it.  
I thought the whole thing had just died.  Turned it all off and back on, 
"rebooted" I think, did everything I could think of, then just turned 
the screen button off and back on and lo and behold, it came back 
on...for 10 seconds or so, then went off again.  I repeated this off and 
on thing with the screen about umpty nine dozen times and it finally 
gave up and stayed on.   It must've enjoyed our little game so much that 
it has decided to repeat it at different times every day since.  I don't 
find it all that amusing, but if I want to get anything done, I have to 
play along, until I eventually win and it decides to act right.  I hope 
this is not just a prelude to worse things to come...

I stopped by Chris Butler's retirement party for a little while 
yesterday.  The retirement party for Teacher Chris Butler that is.  I 
asked him when they were going to have retirement parties for Auxiliary 
Policeman Chris Butler, City Councilman Chris Butler, Sports Announcer 
Chris Butler, etc.  Losing him and Mary Edith is about like losing a 
dozen people what with all the things they were involved in, not to 
mention their real jobs.  We're really going to need several people to 
step up and fill all these vacancies these two are leaving behind.  Best 
of luck to both of the Butlers in their new adventure.

whatever he needs to do.  No telling what that will be.  Maybe I ought 
to get a jump on this and have him a "Honey-Do" list made out for when 
he gets in.   Hmmmm...

Hi folks,

What a wild weather weekend we had!  Wilburton really dodged a bullet 
with all the tornadoes in the area.  My husband's aunt and uncle and 
their family got their 15 minutes of fame when part of their house was 
shown on the news as one of those destroyed by one of the tornadoes that 
came through at Yanush Saturday evening.  Miraculously, they and all 
their children and young grandchildren were next door at her sister's 
house, where the damage was much less severe.  Unfortunately, that 
couple had gone to get my husband's grandmother who didn't want to be 
alone in the storm, and they got caught in it on the way back.  They had 
to pull over due to lack of visibility and were hit by high winds and 
debris that shattered all their vehicle windows except the windshield 
and showered them with glass and debris.  Talk about a close call!  They 
were right near a house that would've probably been blown completely 
across the highway except for it's iron fence and entry gate.  Now the 
floor of that house is leaned upright against the iron entryway.  That's 
something you don't see every day!   I have to say it is wonderfully 
encouraging that very soon after all the storms were gone and the roads 
were cleared enough to be passable, people started arriving with food, 
water and offers to help the families who had been left homeless.  Okies 
can be such great folks!

Hi folks,

I went down to the Buffalo Valley/Yanush area again yesterday evening 
and clean-up is proceeding quite well in most of the inhabited areas.  
It  is very disheartening to think that all those trees that took 
decades, even centuries to grow were wiped out in a half hour span, and 
there won't be anything to compare to them there for several more 
decades.  So much for sitting under a nice shade tree down there this 
summer! 

Be sure and come by the Thank You Reception in the East Cafeteria for 
Ali Martinez today from 11:00 to 1:00.  She has been serving as Staff 
Council President and due to the outsourcing of the Bookstore, of which 
she is the manager, she is not officially considered an Eastern employee 
any longer, though I'm sure all us Eastern employees still consider her 
one of us.  This circumstance is forcing her to step down as Staff 
Council President, but I'm sure she will still be available and willing 
to help with any worthwhile causes that may arise that Eastern could use 
her help on as her schedule permits.  The reception today is to thank 
her for years of dedicated service to Eastern and Eastern's Staff 
Council.  After you eat lunch, come by the East Cafeteria for cake and 
punch and a visit with Ali.

Hi folks,

Well it looks like a kinda drizzly day out, with more storms possibly 
coming this evening.  I know it really rained hard last night making me 
really glad my daughter and I had relocated a little soon-to-be mother 
hen of ours to a safer and much drier pen from her nest in the tall 
grass.  I figured I'd be coming to work today with battle scars from the 
process, but she was very calm about the whole thing.  Maybe she 
realized she was not in the safest of places and that we'd put her 
somewhere better for her and her 18 assorted eggs.  She really seemed 
glad to be in the pen with food and water available that she could get 
to without having to leave her nest in danger.  I'm not sure how long 
she's been sitting on the eggs, since I just found her by accident last 
weekend, but maybe before too long, we'll have a batch of new baby 
chicks.  They're so adorable!

In order to have more time for cleaning and other summer time chores in 
the Cafeteria, we will begin closing the Breakfast line at 8:30, rather 
than 8:45.  This will give us a few extra minutes to spend on other 
tasks we need to get done, so if you're one of those people who likes to 
wait til the last minute to come over and eat, you might want to set 
your clock 15 minutes earlier in order not to miss out on a good 
breakfast. 

For those students who may be here this weekend, the Cafeteria will be 
closed after lunch on Thurs. and Friday, all day Saturday and at 
breakfast and dinner on Sunday.  Vouchers for these meals may be picked 
up in my office in the Cafeteria, and can be used at Nixon's BBQ, the 
Choctaw Plaza, or McDonald's.   

Our menu for today includes:

             Tamale pie
             Vegetable blend
             Baked beans
             Hamburgers or cheeseburgers
             French fries

And for dessert have some all American Apple Cobbler.  Don't forget you 
can top it off with our soft serve ice cream for an extra special treat.

Hi folks,

Do you ever have one of those days when our "miracles of modern 
technology" just seem to be out to get you?  For the past several days 
my computer screen has been going black for no apparent reason at some 
random time throughout the day.  The only thing I've found to do for it 
is to turn the screen off and back on.  Then it will stay on for about 3 
seconds and go off again.  If I repeat this turning off and on process a 
random large number of times, it eventually gives up, as it has now, 
thank goodness.  If you hear a loud blast coming from the Cafeteria 
area, you can probably just disregard it, as it will probably just be me 
at the end of my rope, blowing my computer screen  to kingdom come.  
Nothing to worry about.

Belated birthday wishes go out to our head of Campus Security, Blaine 
Villines who celebrated a birthday yesterday, and early birthday wishes 
go out to Steve Akins who will celebrate a birthday, as will my 
daughter, Destiny.  (I bet Steve will be more than 15, though.)

Our menu for today includes:

             Beef tips
             Mashed potatoes and gravy
             Rice
             Okra
             Onion rings
             Burritos
             Chili
             Hot rolls
         
And for dessert, we have a variety of delicious Cookies to choose from.

Hi folks,

I'm sending this out Thurs. because I'm taking another Friday off.   
Everyone thinks summer is really slow in the Cafeteria or that we're 
closed altogether, because the students are gone,  but the truth is, 
things can get pretty lively around here in the summer, even on weekends 
sometimes, with all the camps coming and going and you just have to take 
a day off when you can get one. 

Our menu for Friday lunch will be:

            Cheeseburgers
            French fries
           
And we'll have Ice Cream and Toppings for dessert.

Our Sunday Buffet menu will include:

          Lasagna
          Baked Chicken Breast
          Baked Potatoes
          Rice
          3 Varieties of Vegetables
          Hot Rolls
          Full Salad Bar
   
And for dessert try some Boston Creme Pie.

P. S.  It's Italian Festival weekend at McAlester and they're having  a

Hi folks,

I don't want to get too cocky, but my computer problem seems to be 
solved thanks to Tracy Clark bringing me a different monitor last week.  
No more of the off/on/type real fast, off/on/type real fast thing to 
deal with so far thank goodness.  That gets very frustrating, and 
there's not much work left to do that's not on computer.

The recent rains have pretty well had our construction on the new 
building brought to a standstill, but it looks like some nice weather 
this week might get them back going again.  Last week it looked like the 
construction zone would make a great place to hold the yearly "Mud 
Bowl", but it doesn't happen til August, so things should be a lot 
different over there by then. 

Most of the public schools are about done with classes for the year, and 
the ones that aren't quite done yet, should be done by the end of the 
week, I believe.  That means there will be a lot more kids out running 
loose, so be sure and watch for them as you're driving.  They sometimes 
forget to watch for you, or just think, "That car's got brakes", not 
realizing just how hard it is to stop quickly at times. 

Our menu for today includes:

            Chicken spaghetti
            Mashed potatoes and gravy
            Steak fingers
            Broccoli
            Corn
            Green beans
            Rice
            Garlic bread

And for dessert have some All American Apple Cobbler.

Hi folks,

As far as I am concerned, it officially got hot yesterday.  We can now 
switch from complaining about the cold and start complaining about the 
heat.   We had a nephew graduate at Buffalo Valley yesterday evening and 
we went to the ceremony in their gym.  (Yes, Rusty, I did see you there 
handing out things.)  How had I never realized before that it is not air 
conditioned?   The whole crowd was using their programs for makeshift 
fans, and I think there was an unspoken agreement to hold all applause 
til the very end to make everything go faster so we could all get 
outside into the cooler air.  There was some trouble with the sound 
system at one point, and I firmly believe it was suffering from a 
meltdown.  Everyone else was.

It looks like construction has started back up on our new building site 
on campus, so as long as we can stay rain free they ought to be able to 
get on with their work.  It seems strange to look out and see the whole 
mid-section of campus fenced off, but we can't have cars zooming around 
in a construction zone.

Our menu for today includes:

            Hamburger steak
            Mashed potatoes and gravy
            Squash
            Cabbage
            Black eyed peas
            Chicken patty sandwich
            French fries
            Hot rolls

And for dessert have some Banana Pudding.

Hi folks,

It's hard for me to believe we're approaching the end of May already!  
It's a little easier to believe, though after being out in the yard 
yesterday and loading up on chiggers.  If they're here, you know it's 
summer time.  Also, the fact that it's starting to be lighter when I 
leave for work in the morning, around 6:00, is a good indicator.  It has 
the songbirds that are out and about in the daytime waking up and 
singing with the whippoorwills who are just getting ready to call it a 
night.  The blackberries are still little, hard, green nubbins, but in 
about a month they'll be all sweet, juicy and ready for picking.  
Doesn't that just make your mouth water thinking of good, hot blackberry 
cobbler or maybe just a nice bowl of fresh berries with milk and sugar?

Our menu for today includes:
             Meatloaf
             Mashed potatoes and gravy
             Navy beans
             Corn
             Fried squash
             Barbecued weiners
            
And for dessert get in the summertime mood with a piece of luscious 
Mandarin Orange Cake.

If you will be staying on campus and intend to eat in the Cafeteria any 
time this weekend that I've indicated below we will be closed, please 
come to my office in the Cafeteria and get vouchers as soon as possible 
for the times we will be closed or call me at Ext. 712, or call the 
Student Services Office, Dana Ext. 818, or Sally Ext. 756,  to notify me 
to make vouchers out for you to be left with the Student Services 
Offices.   I will be here until 3:00 today and plan on being off 
tomorrow and Friday.
We will be closed for the following meals:      Thursday May 22, Dinner
                                                                      
    Friday May 23, Breakfast and Lunch
                                                                      
    Sunday May 25, Breakfast and Dinner

Hi folks,

I guess it's habit, but I really am having a hard time realizing that 
this is not Monday.  It's certainly been acting like a Monday!  I 
started out like a total klutz by dropping the syrup ladle right down 
into the syrup for the waffle sticks this morning at breakfast, so I had 
to go get another one and fish out the first one, then when I was almost 
finished with breakfast, and was trying to get syrup on my last bite of 
waffle stick, it jumped out of my plate, rolled stickily down my lap and 
landed on the floor, causing some inappropriate words to spontaneously 
burst forth.  The clocks over here were all out of kilter, including my 
wrist watch, and the ice machine was dripping, (not a good sign).  Not 
to mention it rained on me when I was coming to work this morning.  All 
in all, this is a very Monday-like Tuesday morning.  It's got to get 
better soon.

My long weekend went much better though.  It was really nice to have a 
few days to get some extra rest, something I never feel like I get 
enough of during the work week.  I know all mothers and others who have 
too much to do can relate to that statement.  When I start to think of 
going to bed, there's always something last minute that needs taken care 
of before I can get there, or something urgently needs washed, dried, 
fixed or found for either my husband or my daughter. 

Our menu for today includes:

          Baked chicken
          Mashed potatoes and gravy
          Baked beans
          Okra
          Corn
          Hot rolls
          Tacos

And for dessert, try a piece of Poke Cake.

Hi folks,

I hope you all made your way in through the fog alright this morning.  
It was definitely a challenge in places, especially if you had to drive 
several miles, as visibility was down to a couple of car lengths ahead, 
and then it was like you were driving into a cloud.   Not the best thing 
to encounter when you're trying to hurry to work in the morning. 

Much congratulations to new Granny Karen Darby on her new grandson, 
Kanaan.  I know we'll be seeing baby pictures before too long and 
hearing lots of cute baby stories.  (That's a requirement, isn't it?  
And she'll have to get a Grandma's Brag Book too for all those pictures 
of him sleeping, smiling, crying, laughing, and all the other 
interesting expressions babies come up with that we think mean 
something, and that usually just turn out to mean they need to burp.)

Please make plans to attend the Employee Recognition Ceremony and 
Reception  tomorrow at 4:00  to help show appreciation to the various 
campus employees who have earned recognition for their dedicated years 
of service to Eastern Oklahoma State College.   Without dedicated 
employees who are committed to the success of Eastern, this institution 
could not move in a positive direction and they deserve our thanks for 
their hard work and efforts on behalf of Eastern.

Hi folks,

Hope you're having a great day.  It's supposed to be really warm today 
and the rest of the week, ahead of schedule for this time of year.  
(Could this be the Global Warming they're talking about?  I have thought 
for years that it's hotter than it used to be, but just thought maybe it 
was my age making me feel that way.)  Somehow I don't think the water 
cooler in the window and shade trees are as effective now as they seemed 
to be when I was a kid.  I don't need a lot of air conditioning, but I 
sure need some of it.

Today is our Gear Up kickoff, with our Gear Up kids coming in for lunch 
today.  The summer camp season has officially started. 

Those of you who appreciate good music should keep your calendar open 
for the evening of Tues. June 10.  EOSC's own Les Brelsford, our Circuit 
Rider for the Oklahoma Arts Council, will be  presenting a vocal concert 
at the Presbyterian Church, 108 East Blair, at 7:00 that evening.   He 
will be accompanied on piano by Kathy Brod of McAlester, (originally of 
Talihina), who also accompanied Michael Ginsburg, the Oklahoma State 
Fiddle Champ at his concert.  Tickets are $10 and the proceeds go to the 
Latimer County Arts Council to help in bringing various arts programs to 
the local schools.  I have a few tickets available, or they may be 
purchased at the door on the night of the performance.

Don't forget about the Employee Recognition Ceremony and Reception today 
starting at 4:00 in the Ballroom.  (I've seen some of the goodies being 
prepared for this, and believe me, you want to be there!)

          Bread sticks
          Steamed red potatoes
          Broccoli and cheese sauce

          Carrots
