Nov. 3 Message-ID: <490F1F45.3040706@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Hard to believe it's November. It's 71 degrees outside and we've got the back door open and a fan blowing in the kitchen. That's Oklahoma for you. Just because the calendar says it's a certain month doesn't mean the weather will automatically act like it. There are always surprises. I'm hoping we manage to pull off some really nice weather for Homecoming week, especially when the outdoor activities are scheduled, like the 100 year celebration at the Clock Tower on Wednesday at noon, and all the fun stuff like Shopping Cart Jousting and Gurneys and Goobers, not to mention the Homecoming Parade on Saturday. I noticed banners up in town promoting Homecoming Week and Eastern's Centennial. It's good to see more involvement between the college and the community. If you want to see something really funny, come out and see the Comedy/Hypnotist in Mitchell Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.. I've seen this several times now and it's always sooo funny. You won't want to miss it. I hope EOSC employee Paula Ogden had a very Happy Birthday this past Saturday. I guess she has really kicked off Homecoming Week for us. Our menu for today includes: Chicken strips Soup and sandwich bar Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn California blend vegetables Sweet peas Hot rolls And for dessert, make your own customized sweet treat with our Ice Cream and Toppings. Nov. 4 Election Day! Message-ID: <491073A7.7000905@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, today is the day that will decide the course of our country for the next 4 years. Be sure and go do your duty and vote, (or they say you can't gripe later, and you know we're all going to want to do that for whatever reason). And I'm sorry, but these are the two candidates you have to choose from. I kept waiting for the real candidates to pop out and say "just kidding", but this is it, and write in votes don't count and will probably get your ballot voided. On a much lighter note, we got to go to the hypnotist show last night, and it was very funny. If a few of the kids on campus do some really quirky things this week, just go along with them. They can't help it, they're under hypnosis. (You might check and make sure they were actually one of the volunteers in the show though, some of them may do quirky things normally.) Happy Birthday wishes go out today to the Nursing Department's Viki Vogt, and to one of our cooks here in the Cafeteria, Mary Burt. I hope they both have a great day, even if they did have to come to work. Roy Clark, one of our dishroom attendants, who recently had quadruple bypass surgery, got to come home from the hospital this past Sunday. His wife, Gloria will be taking care of him for at least a week at home before she can come back to work. Say a prayer for John Calhoun, our building's custodian, who is now in the hospital at McAlester. I'll be looking forward to him getting back to his old ornery self soon. Unfortunately, you don't really know that til afterwards. Hindsight is 20/20 they say. Either way I know there are some people out there that are ecstatic and relieved this morning, while others are depressed and possibly even afraid. I'm just hoping for better times for this country in the future, especially concerning the economy. Don't forget about the Centennial Celebration at the clock tower at Noon. It's hard to believe Eastern is officially 100 years old! Almost as old as our state! We've really come a long way from the School of Mines to Eastern A & M to the Eastern Oklahoma State College we know today. Like a chunk of coal turning into a diamond. Ladies, (and men who want to impress their special lady), don't forget to stop by the big jewelry sale in the East Cafeteria today. Cecil & Co. have all their goodies on display and you just might find that perfect accessory you've been looking for. I'm sure June or her mom would be glad to help you find something you can't live without, and a portion of the proceeds will go to help the Staff Council pay for the picnic coming up in the spring so be generous and good to yourself. Nov. 6 Message-ID: <4913160B.7020509@eosc.edu> Hi folks, If you didn't get to go to the dedication ceremony yesterday or haven't gotten to see the new Centennial Plaza, be sure and go by there and check it out, just to the East side of the sidewalk on the West side of Mitchell. It's a beautiful new addition to our campus and will only improve with time as more and more dedicated bricks are purchased and put into place in it. To me that is the best part, like getting to experience a little of Eastern's history. You can purchase a brick with your name and year of graduation, or years of employment, maybe a club you were in, or even your old sports #! Or you can dedicate one to a teacher who really inspired you, or a dorm mom who made you feel at home even though you were many miles from your family. Any number of things or people can be commemorated and it will all become a permanent part of the campus for future generations to enjoy ( and maybe wonder about). Contact Ann Owens at Ext. 761, or Kim Ott at Ext. 759, in the Foundation office for more information on how you can become a part of this wonderful project. Please keep our friend and co-worker John Calhoun and his family in your prayers. John is in St. John's hospital in Tulsa with serious medical problems and needs all our thoughts and prayers to help him and his family through this trying time. On a much lighter note, be sure and plan to attend the Mr. Eastern contest in Mitchell Auditorium this evening at 7:00. Representatives from all the clubs and organizations on campus will be vying for the dubious distinction of being voted Mr. Eastern 2008/2009. This show is guaranteed to be a lot of laughs, so come prepared to whoop and holler for your favorite "lady". Since Ruth Brelsford says she prefers to keep her birthdays quiet and low key, I didn't announce that she was having one yesterday, but she did, so if you see her you can wish her belated birthday happiness. It's kind of like having relatives visit. You look forward to seeing them and enjoy them for a while, but then you're ready for them to go home. I got to attend the Hall of Fame Dinner Friday evening and hear the many interesting stories told by Col. Lewark, this year's inductee. It's good to know that it is possible for someone from humble beginnings to become such a success in life. We also got to attend the Homecoming Parade Saturday morning. And I can't believe I forgot who the girl was that dinged my husband right between the eyes with a piece of candy thrown from one of the parade floats, but if she's not on the softball team, they really need to recruit her! She is deadly accurate. (Good job, I've wanted to do that before myself! He wouldn't have taken it nearly so well from me though!) And finally our new Mountaineer mascot officially has a name. Buckskin Bob was walking along the parade route handing out blue and gold beads. Congratulations to the new Homecoming King and Queen, Sam Eden representing the Aggie club, and Emily Hassler, representing Honors and PTK. That's just about perfect to me, but it goes downhill from there. There looks to be a slight chance of rain almost every day for the next week or so, but maybe we'll be lucky and dodge those raindrops. My cats don't much like getting wet. Then when you open the door they all want to run inside. Some of them are really good at it, too. They know just how to sneak past you when you're occupied with a different one. I always have to put food out before I can come to work in the morning so I can get out the door without running back in to gather up cats! This will show you a continually updated picture of the new building being born. I actually saw a piece of the roof still hanging from the crane this morning about to be put into place on the building. I haven't gotten to see much of the actual construction, just seen what had been completed as I'd drive by, but this was actually moving into place as I watched. If you're stuck for ideas on how to entertain yourself and your family this evening, just set the TV to record so you don't miss anything and come out to the play. Our EOSC Theater Dept. and a group of local school children will be presenting their 40th children's theater production, "The Perfect Ogre", this evening at 7:00 in Mitchell Auditorium. It's free to all EOSC students, staff and faculty, (can't beat a deal like that), and the cost is only a dollar for adults and .50 for children 12 and under. (You can't beat a deal like that either.) Come on out and join in the fun. There will be a blood drive in honor of Toni Thornton, Paul Enis's mother-in-law, at the BCM today from noon to 6:00. If you get a chance, please go over and donate to help this wonderful lady. Don't forget about the Active Shooter Class in the Ballroom tomorrow morning from 8:00 to 1:00. It should be an interesting and educational few hours. After that part is done, then the local law enforcement officers will participate in a training exercise that should really be interesting, involving fake victims and simulated blood supplied by Blaine Villines' grandson. This should be interesting. He might have a future in the movie special effects department. Flu shots will be given on campus Monday from 11:00 to 1:00 in the East Cafeteria for those who haven't gotten theirs yet this year. Remember to wear something with short sleeves or sleeves that roll up easily and save yourself a lot of hassle. (That's the voice of experience speaking, since I did not remember to do that when I got my shot recently.) Happy Birthday wishes go out to Mimi Kelley today. Mimi, from now on, I'm limiting you to one birthday a year. You can't get all the presents. Our menu for today includes: Macaroni and cheese with little smokies Meat and cheese nachos Beans Cornbread Potato chips Fish Seasoned fried potatoes Corn on the cob And for dessert, have some all American Apple Cobbler, and don't forget about our soft serve ice cream you can top it with. Nov. 17 Message-ID: <4921908E.2030306@eosc.edu> Hi folks, How quickly the weekends go by! It's going to be nice to get this week out of the way and have a week off to get some stuff done at the house. Granted, I may have to chase everyone and everything away to make any progress with that, but whatever it takes. My daughter who is supposed to go take her permit test today, will probably be wanting to go driving. It's a good thing the price of gas has gone down some. Maybe now I can afford the nerve pills I'll need to get through this exciting chapter of our lives! Wish me luck. Remember, you can get a flu shot here in the East Cafeteria from 11:00 to 1:00 if you haven't had yours yet this year. Better safe than sorry. Wouldn't you hate to have the flu during your week off? The Latimer County Health Department will be providing these shots free of charge, but any donations you could make would be greatly appreciated and possibly help keep the free flu shot program going another year. Belated birthday wishes go out to our own Susie Smith, formerly of the Coffee Shop. Just her luck, she wound up spending her birthday out here working Saturday. And today's birthday wishes go out to Karen Darby, of our Wilburton campus, and her twin sister Kelly Bogard, of the McAlester campus. Are they just too ornery when they get together, is that why we keep them separated? Anyway, I hope they both have a very happy birthday. Blaine Villines, and his security staff along with several of us Building Monitors and various other interested individuals attended an Active Shooter class here on Saturday morning. Your dearest hope is never to have to use anything you learn in a class like this one or a CPR class, but like I said earlier, better safe than sorry. We're having our annual Thanksgiving dinner menu in the Cafeteria today at lunch and you don't want to miss it. Just think of it as a practice run for the real thing next week, only you don't have to cook this one or clean up after it. There's something to be thankful for! Of course you may not get to take the traditional after-turkey nap until you get off work either, but that's the breaks. We'll be having most of your traditional favorites, so there's no excuse for anyone to be walking around hungry today. Come on over and kick off the Thanksgiving eating season with us. (And if you find a good spot to take that after-turkey nap, be sure and let me know where it is!) Sounds like there'll be a double header tonight for our basketball teams as they take on Cowley County Community College this evening at 6:00 and 8:00. If you're a basketball fan, this is where you need to be. Not being a big fan of banana, (I ate way too many of them once when I was a kid and they haven't appealed to me that much since), I just had some pretzel salad to finish off my meal, although that cherry or strawberry cream pie sure looked good. Nov. 20 Message-ID: <49258D7B.9080903@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, it's just one more day for most of you til you are off for a whole week! Some of the Cafeteria workers have a little longer to go, since we'll have to be open this weekend and then again on Monday due to basketball games that are keeping the ball teams, cheerleaders, etc. on campus a little longer. After that though, we'll all be able to be off and go home and enjoy the break with our families. Now there's something to be thankful for! I'm not real thrilled with the weather forecast. They're saying it's supposed to be cold, windy and then colder. I don't like the sound of any of that. Mildred and I were down in the freezers doing inventory this morning, so we've already had a preview of cold and colder. It's not pretty. In case some of you wonder what my job consists of besides sending out the daily menu and of course my silly comments, a good amount of time close to the end of the month is spent doing inventory; writing down every bit of food and supplies we have in stock and how much it all costs. Of course, when we're doing the freezers, only part of that time is spent writing down items and prices, the rest is spent warming up my pen, (until I give up and use a pencil because the pen froze up), thawing my fingers and feet, and defogging my glasses. Inventorying the freezers feels like working outdoors in the Arctic without the blizzards and polar bears. I'm hoping in the new building we have a scanning system so that "doing inventory" will be obsolete. Since Mildred and I both have asthma, she decided we should wear masks this time so that we wouldn't breathe in as much cold air. I couldn't decide if we looked like we were about to do surgery or rob the place. Our menu for today includes: Burritos with chili and cheese Refried beans Mexican rice Corn Nachos Corn dogs French fries And for dessert have a hunk of an old American favorite, Chocolate Cake. (Sorry, after that Mexican menu, I bet you were all expecting sopapillas, weren't you?) Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm ready! I like being here, but I like being home too. It's good for the soul, it just doesn't pay the bills. While you're off , those of you who like to do arts and crafts might want to decorate a wreath for the Characters Club fundraiser coming up on Tues. Dec. 2. This will be right after we get back from break, so the week off will be perfect for working on a wreath or two for this event. You can do a Christmas wreath or a themed wreath, whatever you'd like. (I'm thinking of making a dog themed one, since I'm in PAWS.) We have several students who were selected to compete in San Marcos, TX the last week in February and this is going to take money. Please be generous and make a wreath to donate, and plan to buy a wreath for your home or office or both, for yourself or a friend, or just make a donation to help these kids meet this goal. Any donation or help will be greatly appreciated. These kids and their teachers do wonderful work and really need and deserve our support.
