Oct. 1 Message-ID: <48E39149.7080404@eosc.edu> Hi folks, October is here so get ready for Fall Break the 16th and 17th, along with the Fall Festival at Robber's Cave State Park , the Halloween Carnival and lots of little trick or treaters running wild on campus. I'm hoping the calendar is right and we can expect one of those wonderful Eastern Theater productions this month also. There are also a couple of really great concerts coming up on October 11 you music lovers need to know about. The more local of the two is part of the concert series sponsored by the Latimer County Arts Council, and will feature Brenda Lumpkin at 7:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church here in Wilburton. (I believe this was to be more traditional, possibly more gospel music.) The second one is geared more for the younger folks and rock and rollers. This is called Bands for Boards and will be at the Talihina School Auditorium also at 7:00 p.m. on Oct. 11. It will feature young local talent, Falling Crossways, and well known local band Oversoul, and proceeds will go toward getting a skate park built in Talihina. (Check out My Space on these bands to hear a sample of their great music.) Anyone needing tickets for either of these two events can contact me at 465-1712. Our menu for today includes: Parmesan chicken Spaghetti with marinara sauce Winter blend vegetables with cheese sauce Corn Green beans Mashed potatoes and gravy Ham and cheese wraps Hot rolls And for dessert take your pick from either Pineapple Upside Down Cake or Mandarin Orange Upside Down Cake. I saw a Family Circus cartoon once where two of the children heard a siren and the little boy was like me, thinking, "Oh no, somebody's in trouble!" but the little girl thought, "Oh good, somebody's getting help!" I heard several sirens heading south this morning as I was getting ready for work only to get here and have my husband call me and tell me they were probably going after his cousin and her four little girls who had been in a bad wreck, and multiple helicopters were being sent. Please keep them in your prayers. It was this woman's parents who lost their home in the tornado earlier this year. Talk about having a bad year! And you all be sure and drive carefully! I don't want to hear any more sirens, especially going for people I know! Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy French fries Black eyed peas Cabbage California blend vegetables Green beans Hot rolls And for dessert satisfy your sweet tooth with some delicious Chocolate or Coconut Pie. All Student Support Services participants are strongly urged to attend. In order for SSS to continue bringing workshops to McAlester, we need to have participation. The workshop this time is entitled "Before You Begin an On-line Class." We will have refreshments, and after the workshop you will have an opportunity to let me know what sort of workshops you are most interested in attending. These workshops are a good way for you rack up participation points that will go toward making you eligible for the Grant Aid Scholarship. And the family members from yesterday's wreck are mostly all in pretty good shape considering. One had a broken ankle, one had a broken arm, and the little girl who got the worst injuries in our bunch got a broken nose, 2 black eyes, some knocked out teeth, and a gash on the back of her head. She will need to have some facial reconstructive surgery, but they said she was talking and making friends with people at the hospital so I think she'll be fine too. I don't really know for sure about the mother and baby in the other vehicle, but I'm certainly hoping for the best for them also. Keep them all in your prayers. And drive carefully! Don't forget, you Kiamichi Electric Co-op members, the annual meeting will be tomorrow morning in the Fieldhouse here at Eastern. Come participate, and enjoy free food and entertainment and great door prizes! And tomorrow evening, if you're over that way, you can come to the Lion's Club carnival in downtown Talihina. Our Skate Park Kids will be having a dunk tank, but no, I'm sorry, you couldn't possibly donate enough to get me in there! (Much as some of you would probably like to!) Our Student Union custodian, John Calhoun, will be celebrating his birthday this weekend. He will be one year closer to retirement on Sunday. Don't celebrate too much, John. We still need you all in one piece! Oct. 6 Message-ID: <48EA2BBF.2080204@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope your weekend was enjoyable and safe. It was a busy weekend in the area, with the Kiamichi Electric Annual Meeting taking place here in the Fieldhouse on Saturday morning, and Roy's having their big annual anniversary sale also on Saturday. Then Saturday evening the Lion's Club Fall Carnival was held in Talihina, and I also noticed some flyers saying this was the weekend of the Bigfoot Festival in Honobia. Wonder if he made an appearance? It's looking like a busy week coming up on campus too. Wednesday at 11:00, EOSC will present the latest in the Rothbaum lecture series, featuring District 42 Oklahoma State Representative Lisa Billy. And starting Thursday evening, our Theater Dept. will be presenting Godspell for your enjoyment. They always do a wonderful job and have a lot of fun, and are just a joy to watch. Be sure and come out and see this wonderful production. Don't forget this weekend there will be two great concerts to attend: For rock music fans, be sure and get your tickets to go to the Bands for Boards concert in the Talihina School Auditorium Saturday at 7:00. Local high school band, Falling Crossways will be opening for Oversoul. Tickets are $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for students. All proceeds will go to the fund to build a skate park in Talihina. I have tickets already available for this event so be sure and contact me to get yours. Also Saturday at 7:00, the Latimer County Arts Council will be sponsoring a wonderful show featuring Brenda Lumpkin at the Presbyterian Church here in Wilburton. Contact Ruth Brelsford or myself for tickets to this event. (I believe they are $10.00 also.) Good news for you Ittibitz ice cream fans. We now have Mint Ittibitz in stock, so come try a new flavor. Sounds delicious! Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meatballs Chicken fried steak French fries Mashed potatoes and gravy Sweet peas Corn Broccoli cuts Garlic bread And for dessert have some Ice Cream with your choice of Toppings. Oct. 7 Message-ID: <48EB7BAA.5070405@eosc.edu> Hi folks, In spite of the rain, I thought I saw some activity going on in our construction zone yesterday, but if this keeps up our construction workers will probably be back on time off if they're not already. At least they do have the cement poured and some beams up so they're not having to play in the mud when it rains! I'm sure that's a relief to them. And it's really good to begin to see the structure of the new building taking shape. I was surprised yesterday to see a large flight of stairs had been installed going up to the second floor when I drove past and looked at the area. Now if I can find some of the plans to look at, I should be able to tell more what's what. After seeing Keith Lewis in the Cafeteria yesterday running blue electrical wire up through our ceiling for something, I had to find out what was going on, so I called his wife, Dana, and the way I understand it we will be getting a 42" plasma screen television installed to display information about campus events, etc. (Sorry, but it's not going to be set up for watching ball games, MTV, soap operas or cartoons. Ditto Dr. Phil and Oprah.) This is courtesy of our newly adopted "big sister" college, Northeastern State University, and is one of the benefits of our new partnership with them to encourage our students who need to transfer on to a four year college to go from "Gold to Green". A press conference will be held Thurs. at 10:30 at the Clock Tower to sign an agreement between EOSC and NSU to officially begin a partnership between the two colleges that should benefit many of our transferring students. Our sympathy goes out to Betty Eason, long time EOSC employee, and her family on the loss of her son David last Friday. Our hearts are with them. I guess it just wanted a do-over for the day. It worked fine after that. (And I didn't even have to bother anyone else about it! See you tech guys can be glad you dodged that bullet!) I will be out of pocket tomorrow as I will be attending the OACC (Oklahoma Association of Community Colleges) Convention in Oklahoma City, along with Helen Scott, Kim Pendergraft and Carla Rogers. I believe they will be discussing various innovative ideas that are being implemented at other state community colleges, so I'm hoping we can bring back some good borrowed ideas that will be of benefit to Eastern. Tonight is the opening night of Godspell, put on by our Theater Dept. under the direction of Melissa Heath-Lee. I can't wait to see it! It will also run tomorrow night and Saturday night. According to Melissa, there will be judges from the Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival there on Saturday night as the students are competing in that event so come and let those judges know how much we enjoy our Theater Dept's wonderful performances. There's absolutely no excuse for anyone with a few bucks to have to stay home and be bored on Saturday night. There's just too much going on! Godspell will be having its final performance here on campus at 7:30, Brenda Lumpkins will be in concert at the Presbyterian Church at 7:00, sponsored by the Latimer County Arts Council who will use the proceeds to bring various arts programs to the 4 county schools, and in Talihina we will be having our Bands for Boards concert, also at 7:00, featuring Oversoul and Falling Crossways. Proceeds for this will be put toward building a skate park in Talihina. Everyone needs to get out and take advantage of these wonderful local, live entertainment opportunities this weekend. We are starting an Employee of the Month program. The program policy is attached to this e-mail. It is our hope that this will help Eastern and increase Employee morale and Employee participation and it is designed to recognize excellence over and above job responsibilities. I will give you a brief idea of the program, but you need to read the entire attached policy. Anyone can be elected as an Employee of the Month, with the exception of the President, Vice Presidents, and member of the Staff Council. You may not nominate yourself, however a supervisor, faculty member, coworker, students, or visitors on campus may make a nomination. Nominations must be received by the last Friday of the month. The selected employee will receive a coupon for a free meal in the EOSC cafeteria, a framable certificate, and also they will be interviewed by the Statesman office and their name, picture, and a small article with information about this employee will appear in the Statesman. The bookstore may also join this reward program. We plan to select our first employee of the month at our regular meeting in November, and this would be the October Employee of the Month. The nomination form for the October Employee of the Month will need to be submitted no later than October 31, 2008. The forms will be available on the table in the Library building next to where everyone's mailbox is located, and also the nomination form is attached to this email. If you have a nomination, please fill out the form completely and place it in a suggestion box or give it to any staff council member. If you have any questions about this program, you may contact any council member; Helen Scott, Sheryl Marmon, Anne Hester, Mark Hill, Zulema Gomez, or Rhoda Watkins. We are very excited to be able to recognize and reward our outstanding employees. Please print this for those employees that do not have e-mail access. Thanks on behalf of the entire Staff Council. We may not get today off, but we are having a short week with Fall Break on Thursday and Friday and the Fall Festival going on out at the park this weekend, too. The weather may be a little damp during the early and mid part of this week, but it looks like by the weekend it should clear up and be really super for being outside. I hope you all managed to see the play Godspell last week. I had heard of it before but never seen it and didn't know what to expect. It was very enjoyable and did contain a lot of good life lessons. I hope they Kennedy Center judges found it as entertaining as I did. I can't wait til the next play they put on. The kids all seemed to be having such a good time, (you can tell some of them REALLY enjoy their work!) The OACC conference Friday was great and I managed to bring home a big beautiful chrysanthemum that was one of the door prizes. (I gave it to Mildred to take care of, since she has such a green thumb and I don't.) They did torture me and hold off calling my number until the very last or maybe the next to last one. By that time I was sitting there thinking, "This is why I don't gamble." Helen swore me to secrecy about anything embarrassing or incriminating that may or may not have happened at the conference, so I guess it's one of those "what happens at the conference stays at the conference" things. Suffice it to say we all had a good time and made it back in good condition. ready to go again. Maybe next year Eastern will have an entry into their CSI contest, (Creative Staff Innovations). Belated birthday wishes go out to Maye Durant and Rhonda (Price) Quinn for Wed. of last week and to Jennifer Mack who celebrated her big day on Saturday. I really fell down on the job yesterday when I forgot to warn everyone that Kim Ott's son, Keith, turned 16 and so is legally of age to drive, so LOOKOUT! No telling where he'll turn up! And today Mr. Les Brelsford has a birthday, so be sure and wish him a great day if you see him on campus. With his great singing voice, I wouldn't ming hearing him sing Happy Birthday to himself! It'd sure beat me doing it! If you're looking for something to do this evening there will be a school play at Red Oak at 6:30 under the direction of Mrs. Pam Wasson. Please go if you can and support her theater students. After all, they may be Eastern students one of these days! Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Macaroni and cheese Green beans Scandinavian blend vegetables Brussels sprouts Roast beef and cheddar Potato chips Hot rolls And for dessert have some yummy Peach Cobbler! Top it with a little of our soft serve ice cream and you've got a real treat! Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Oct. 15 Message-ID: <48F6052F.2050801@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we've almost got this week whipped. The rest of the week will be a piece of cake, (probably funnel cake at the Fall Festival actually). Sound good to you? I've noticed lately that since it's been cooler and we've been getting some rain, some of my flowers are starting to take an interest in actually living. My Crape Myrtles are blooming, along with some red spider lilies? that popped up from nowhere. My beautiful purple clematis vine that trails over my archway is actually looking alive again and got quite a few blooms on it for a plant that looked like it was history just a few weeks ago. I have a few phlox and obedient plants in front of the house that have managed to outwit the weeds and put on a few blossoms, and if I get up early enough, I get to enjoy the beautiful blue morning glories that have seeded themselves all around our house. Even the little white flowers on the bindweed are pretty. (And don't forget the orange trumpet or hummingbird vine that is slowly sucking the siding off the end of our house!) All that should give the migrating butterflies plenty of nourishment on their way south, if our one little resident hummingbird doesn't chase them away. I've noticed some of the foliage starting to change to its autumn wardrobe lately, so be sure and get out these next few days and take it all in. It may not be at peak color yet, but it's still worth it just to get out, breathe the fresh air and enjoy the day. Be sure to wish Keith Lewis a Happy Birthday today. He's a great guy. I'm not sure how old he actually is, but he's worked here a looooong time so you do the math. Another one of our technical expert guys, Jeff Weems, will be celebrating his birthday on Friday. You know you're special when everybody gets two days off for your birthday! I should be sending out another email later today detailing the Cafeteria's schedule for the next few days. Watch for it if you plan on eating here. Our menu for today includes: Fried chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn California blend vegetables Baked potato bar PIZZA!!! And for dessert have some Chocolate or Banana Cake. Have a great Fall Break, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I had a cold hit me on Thursday, (what timing), but was still bound and determined to make it to the festival. And just for the record, the poor woman who passed out in the Turkey Leg line was not me. (I think she passed out from hunger waiting in the long line ;-) .) It took forever but I finally made it to the front of the line, got my turkey legs and took off with them, (and they weren't even for me, just for Gary, Destiny and a friend she had with her.) I still say my favorite part of the whole thing is getting to see and pet all the cute dogs people bring with them, (and eating of course.) You can see all kinds of dogs and owners and just general folks out there. It's definitely the busiest place around on Saturday. Before we even got there, we stopped there on Fern's corner where the little bus picks people up and takes them to the festival to see what was for sale and wound up adding 2 parakeets to our menagerie. One is the beautiful blue color that you find in parakeets and the other is kind of a light dove gray/white color. The jury is still out as to what to name them. Very Happy Birthday wishes go out today to an Eastern favorite: Mrs. Pat Thomas. She's been here longer than I can remember and is really part of the glue that holds this place together. According to the weather reports, we may get some rain this afternoon and have a really good chance of it tomorrow, so you'd better locate that umbrella. You'll probably need it! I guess the scary movie fans are in hog heaven this week with Horror Movie Week going on. My daughter was looking for some movies last weekend and she loves the scary ones, the scarier the better as far as she's concerned. I'm not into that. I like something funny, one with a good story line, or a good adventure movie, or a good animal movie (where it doesn't die at the end, I still want to shoot the guy that shot Bambi's mom), but not the creepy, scary stuff. I recommended one to Destiny that really looked scary to me and she said, "That's not scary, Mom." I don't know why she didn't think so. It was "Juno". I can't think of anything much scarier than a pregnant teenager! Gives me cold chills just thinking about it! Oct. 22 Message-ID: <48FF4560.1070208@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I'm still waiting for that 90% chance of rain that was predicted for today. I just looked outside and it looks suspiciously like sunshine instead. Maybe the rain's like me, just running perpetually behind. The gas line break on campus kind of put a kink in the cooking over here yesterday, but I think everything's back under control now. It did serve to remind me, and several others I bet, of the importance of having the little emergency walkie talkies that were issued to all the Emergency Response Team members on campus in the office every day. Ours, (mine and Dana's), didn't work at first, so we had to get that issue taken care of, and I really didn't get in the habit of going and getting it to have in the office every morning from the start like I should have. Then yesterday when the emergency call went out and I went to get mine out of Dana's office, Sally and Dana were busy elsewhere and the office was locked so I couldn't get in to get it. That'll teach me, but I did go first thing this morning and got mine so I'd have it ready. Of course it helped to remember that we were having a Building Monitors meeting today at lunch, and when I saw all those BP, etc. trucks parked on campus, I knew there would be a lot of activity around today, so I'd better be prepared for anything. Destiny and I had gone to take her boyfriend back home yesterday evening when my husband called and said, "You'll never guess what happened." I knew from his tone it probably wasn't a good thing either. He had run to town while we were gone and just before he got back home some deer ran across the highway in front of him, and with a vehicle coming at him in the other lane and one behind him he couldn't go anywhere to avoid hitting it. Of course it killed the poor deer and did a fair amount of damage to the front of his pickup. He wasn't hurt, just startled pretty good and aggravated, (and lucky, really, it couldn've been much worse.) I told him next time I leave him at the house, stay there. Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Pinto beans Crispy cube potatoes Corn Cabbage Baby carrots Cornbread Hot ham and cheese on a bun And for dessert, have some luscious Strawberry Shortcake. Our friends Zule, LaDonna Howell's right hand girl, and George Gomez of the Oklahoma Miner's Training Institute over in Baker Hall are already discovering that Oklahoma winters are way different than the Florida ones they're used to. The wood stove they're using to heat their home is already proving to be too small for the job, (and it hasn't even gotten very cold yet!) If anyone has or knows someone who has a good sized one for sale, please let them know before the real cold weather sets in! Looking at the extended forecast though, it appears that it will be getting warmer for the next several days, so maybe they'll have some time to come up with something that'll keep them from getting frostbite. One of our neighbors came up the hill yesterday evening to let me know that she had just seen a vehicle dump out a bunch of cats at City Lake, and since someone had already dumped a bunch of kittens on them, her husband wouldn't let her rescue them. The first cold night so far and that's when someone chose to dump their pets out in the middle of nowhere! My daughter and I drove over there, and pulled up to the spot our neighbor told us she had seen them. We didn't see anything, but I stopped the car and Destiny opened the door to get out and immediately there was scurrying in the fallen leaves right next to us. She shrieked, jumped back in the car and slammed the door. Then she realized it wasn't some big wild monster trying to eat her, but just hungry cats both big and little. They were friendly enough so we were able to catch most of them, five in all, and take them home to be fed and bedded down. We couldn't convince the larger two of the bunch to go with us, so when we got the first five home and fed, we went back with some food for them. Maybe this evening we can go back and rescue the last two. I know we'll have to buy a big bag of cat food today! Anyone need a cat or a kitten? We definitely have more than we need, since we already had too many, but couldn't leave that whole batch of kitties out there to become coyote food. Anyone who could do that just shouldn't even have pets. If you need a flu shot before Nov. 17 when you can get one on campus, they will be giving them at the Health Dept. today, so call down there and check it out. They say it's important for anyone with respiratory problems, like asthma, to get one so I'm going to try to get down there and get mine today. An ounce of prevention, you know. And since this is the weekend of the Chili Cookoff, we won't be having our Sunday Buffet in the Cafeteria. That way everyone can join us at the Chili Cookoff and sample some of the great secret recipes that the participants bring in, and vote for your favorite. (I just want something not too spicy and not made out of anything unusual, like deer, etc. on top of some Fritos and smothered with cheese.) Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak Burritos with chili French fries Pasta Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Fried okra California blend vegetables Hot rolls And for dessert have some luscious Fruit Cobbler. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Oct. 30 Message-ID: <4909C9C7.2010105@eosc.edu> Happy Halloween everyone (well close enough), Today should count as Halloween, (even though it's a day early according to the calendar), since we're having our carnival on campus today to leave everyone free to attend the football game tomorrow night, trick or treating in Wilburton is scheduled for tonight, and I dressed up for it, so there, what other reasons could you possibly need? Be sure and come to the carnival and let everyone with children know that we'll be having our 2nd Annual Halloween Carnival today for the community children from 5:00 to 7:00. There will be all kinds of fun stuff going on that they won't want to miss. Happy birthday wishes go out today to Julie Moss, and also to Leon Hanebrink. That's pretty special for the whole campus to have a big party on your birthday! You two have a happy day. It's warming up some compared to what it was a few days ago. We went to McAlester this past weekend and I saw about 3 or 4 different little groups of geese flying around, so I figure it won't be long before they're flocking together and starting their long journey south for the winter. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Cheeseburgers Loaded baked potato French fries Corn on the cob Baby carrots Brusssels sprouts Garlic bread And for dessert have some luscious Cherry or Blackberry Cobbler. Have a great day and enjoy the carnival, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Oct. 31 Happy Halloween Message-ID: <490B1A1B.9040409@eosc.edu> Happy Halloween everyone, Wasn't the carnival great yesterday? There were lots of fun things to do and great food, too. I really liked those potato croquets that the International students sold. And of course I had to have a caramel apple, too. My daughter and her boyfriend and some of their friends had to go through the Haunted Dorm put on by the Baseball Team and they said it was awesome! One of the guys said on the way there that he had been looking for a haunted house that would actually scare him. On the way back he said he had found it. They'll be having it one last time tonight so if you're into the scary and creepy, and you haven't been there yet, or if you'd just like to go again, tonight will be your last chance. Great job, Baseball Team, Coaches Thomas and Price and anyone else involved with this event! Don't forget we'll be having the Chili Cookoff this Sunday instead of the usual Sunday Buffet, so get ready for a great bowl of chili or Frito pie, whichever you prefer. And don't forget to "Fall Back" this weekend. Set your clocks back an hour Saturday night and get yourself an extra hour of sleep. Hey, who couldn't use that? Our menu for today includes: Beef tips with rice Tuna salad Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Green beans Fried okra Baked potato bar Hot rolls And for dessert make your own Banana Split!
