Sept. 2 Message-ID: <48BD618A.90405@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope your Labor Day Holiday was a safe and happy one. We got to go to the Choctaw Labor Day Festival and see and hear Kenny Rogers! Of course, where we were standing he only looked to be about an inch tall, but hey, we were there and so was he! Several of our Eastern Family celebrated birthdays within the last few days. On Aug. 29th we had a triple whammy with Gwen McMillen, Julie (Davis) Collins and Michelle Harding celebrating birthdays. I heard it through the grapevine that a certain college president, not to mention any names, turned a year older this past Sat. Aug. 30. Also, Trisha White celebrated her big day yesterday. Very happy birthday wishes to them all! On kind of a sad note, it's been a year now since we lost our radio station, KESC or KOCD as it was called later. I really miss the great music Dougo played for us to enjoy. I'm glad we still have him on campus to enjoy visiting with anyway, even if he is handing out bills now instead of playing great music. Our lunch menu for today includes: Pitas Indian tacos French fries Pinto beans Macaroni and cheese Brussels sprouts Sauerkraut with smoked sausage Baby carrots And for dessert, have some luscious Cobbler. Our dinner menu will not be reported at this time due to changes caused by circumstances beyond our control. Sept. 3 Message-ID: <48BEA4B7.8030402@eosc.edu> Hi all, We may not get hurricanes up this far, but we are definitely feeling the aftereffects of Gustav, with all this rain coming down. My poor chickens have just been standing around in it. They've been afraid to roost in their henhouse lately because of raccoons. The raccoons figured out that they could get in there and chow down on eggs. That wasn't so bad, but when there were no more eggs, they decided a nice chicken dinner would be just as good. I've been up chasing raccoons away, (not always successfully), for several nights now, (they're too cute to shoot), and the chickens I've got left are either going way out to roost, or getting as close to the front door of our house as they can in the hopes that someone will hear them squawk if a raccoon comes and run out to save them. My daughter heard a commotion outside night before last, (a raccoon after one of our hens), and jumped up and ran out yelling her head off. Her dad had been asleep and had no idea what was going on. He woke up panicked and then mad over her yelling like a crazy person in the middle of the night like that. (I think she took several years off his life span, and probably gave him a few more gray hairs.) Fortunately for him, he doesn't know half the crises he sleeps through with our critters. Evidently we had a home baseball game get rained out today, (imagine that, I thought guys liked to play in the mud!), so we're having to fling together some sandwich stuff for the team to take to a drier place to play their game. Good luck, guys! Be sure and welcome our visitors to the Counselor's Fair on campus today. Maybe the rain won't dampen their enthusiasm. (And the trays of delicious goodies we prepared for them can't hurt either!) Our menu for today includes: Baked chicken (followed up by fried chicken) (No, not my chickens!) Pasta bar Soup Ham and cheese wraps Garlic bread Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli and rice casserole Green beans Corn And for dessert, have some delicious Ice Cream and Toppings. I clicked on it to find out more, and was really surprised to find that our guest speaker, Tanya Brown, is Nicole Brown Simpson's sister. She will be speaking on domestic violence, in hopes of helping to prevent any more tragic incidents like the famous "O. J. Simpson case" where her sister and a friend were murdered, but the courts were unable to convict O. J., the ex-husband and prime suspect of the crime. This program is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium and is free and open to the public. Please come and encourage anyone you know who might be interested or in a situation where they might need this information to attend. If you see Rosalio Montez on campus today, unless he took his birthday off, please wish him a very happy birthday. It'll put a smile on his face, although there's usually one there already, since he's usually plotting up some mischief. It's been great weed pulling weather the past few days. That's one thing I never seem to get around to until it does get to be cooler and damper like this. Those weeds are just tougher than I am when they're in dry, hard ground. Sept. 5 Message-ID: <48C149BF.6010209@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, September really snuck up on me. (That's probably not proper English, but I'm pretty sure it's proper Okie.) I am still trying to write August on things, but the temperature lately makes it a lot easier to believe it's actually September or even later. It definitely feels like time to start rotating the closet and bringing the warmer stuff forward, hunting out the long sleeves and jackets, and go shoe shopping for some new Fall/Winter shoes. I came back to campus yesterday evening with my daughter and her best friend to the special program on Domestic Violence with guest speaker Tanya Brown, sister of Nicole Brown (Simpson). Many of us grownups remember following that story in the news, with the low speed Bronco chase and the lengthy, high profile "Trial of the Century" as if it were yesterday, but it was kind of a shock to realize that most of our students were only about 5 years old when it happened. Tanya stressed that most abuse begins on a verbal level, and goes through a predictable pattern, that if not stopped many times does not end without a fatal resolution. She told of one woman who was a domestic violence advocate for women who frequently heard sounds of violence and abuse occurring from her neighbors, but did not feel she should interfere. The neighbor was later killed by her abuser. At that point, there's no going back to change what you didn't do to help. She stated that if you think someone is being abused, just let them know that you're there for them, ready to be a friend, someone to talk to and ready to do whatever you can to help. It can make all the difference. Sept. 8 Message-ID: <48C539C2.9050202@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wasn't it a wonderful weekend? We had a PAWS adoption day and had terrific results with 16 dogs getting new homes! I even got a little bit of a sunburn sitting out there with the ladies and dogs for several hours. Of course, we couldn't adopt them all out, and I hated to see any have to go back to the pound, but it happens, and our local dogcatcher, Kenny Houston, is really great to work with us on our adoption days to help keep as many of these wonderful companion animals from having to be killed. With the weather cooling off, we should be able to start having more frequent adoption days now. We have to shut down during the hot part of the year and the cold part of the year, as it's just too much on us as well as the animals to be exposed to the extreme temperatures for hours on end. Happy birthday wishes go out to Mimi Kelley who celebrated her birthday this past Saturday, Danny Foster who is celebrating becoming just a dab older than me today, and Elaine Smith of our Antlers campus who will celebrate her big day tomorrow. I feel like I'm half crippled this morning. My left elbow is swollen and hurts and everyone that looks at it says it has a little red spot on it. They're about to make me paranoid that I've gotten a spider bite. I have seen some really nasty looking pictures of spider bites and trust me, I don't want one! If nothing else, and that is what it turns out to be, I'm glad it's on the back of my elbow where I won't have to look at it! I got startled out of a nice comfortable snooze this morning by a really loud squawking coming from outside the house. I just knew something (probably one of those doggone raccoons) had gotten another chicken, and figured I would be way too late to save it, when it squawked again, so I figured, well, I just had to try. I got my shoes on, grabbed up the flashlight and took off out through the wet grass and weeds (bad elbow and all) to try to at least find the scene of the crime. I found one of my young white hens lying in the grass looking practically dead. I guess my mad charge into the darkness has scared away whatever was trying to make a snack out of her. I reached down to try and pick her up, only to find that she had plenty of life left in her, and was still fully capable of letting out a squawk that would put a fire alarm to shame. She jumped up and ran like I was going to eat her, squawking all the way, until she finally "hid" in a clump of weeds. I waded over there and was finally able to get a good hold on her and the flashlight and get back into the house. I left her in a cat carrier today just for safekeeping. She may well be the only chicken we have left. We did get another big Muscovy duck this weekend, as we've had one of those for a while and nothing seems to mess with them. I wish I could train them to guard chickens and kittens! Sept. 9 Message-ID: <48C690B1.4050401@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we've officially gone out of the chicken business at my house, at least until we get a better henhouse and maybe a good critter-proof pen for them. We wanted to have chickens to keep down the bug population (mostly ticks), but all that's happening is that something, (raccoons and who knows what), is keeping down our chicken population. The little hen I rescued yesterday morning was evidently my last one. I left her in a pet carrier all day yesterday, then took her to a friend's house yesterday evening to live with her chickens. She has a really good setup with chain link fences that keep all the critters away from her chickens, ducks, etc. so the poor little traumatized hen ought to be safe there. Of course when we put her down in amongst her new flock, the fighting started. One of the resident chickens came up and pecked at her and the fight was on. She'd had a bad day after all, getting rudely jarred awake at 6:00 or so in the morning by something biting into her trying to drag her off for breakfast, then being dropped in the wet grass, and scared half to death by her rescuer, grabbed up again, put into a cat carrier and left for the day with 5 little dogs all coming around sniffing and peeking in at you, and probably barking, so she wasn't about to put up with any bullying from some little upstart hen half her size! Of course, she had to take on several of them before they figured they'd better leave her alone. No wonder she was grouchy! The weather looks a little iffy outside today, like it might rain or it might not. I'm definitely relieved that the heat wave seems to be gone for the year. I hope it doesn't rain this weekend, as we have a family reunion to go to and it's an outdoor thing. Our student services office will be sponsoring military recruitment tables on campus as well as other commemorative events. Also PTK/Honors students have been holding Voter's Registration Days on campus in an effort to get more students registered and interested in the political system in this country, and encourage them to take part in it. The upcoming Presidential Election in November will be a historical event and the winners and the political party backing them will have a major hand in shaping events in this country for at least the next four years. I was looking at an email I received pertaining to women's suffrage, and the horrors and injustices that our grandmothers and greatgrandmothers faced in trying to win the right to vote in this country. It really makes you realize how much we take for granted our "right to vote" when you think about what those brave women of the past had to go through to get us to this point. To find out more about this, be sure and attend the HBO movie "Iron Jawed Angels" sponsored by the Honors students and aired in the Pratt Little Theater Tuesday evening Sept. 16. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Garlic bread Steamed red potatoes Corn Green beans Seasoned rice Broccoli with cheese sauce Baked potatoes Cheeseburgers And for dessert have some delicious Fruit Cocktail Cake or some Peaches and Cream Cake. I don't know who invited Hurricane Ike to our family reunion, but show up he did. He was pretty calm earlier on, limiting his shenanigans to merely drizzling on everything, and forcing the picnic in the park we had planned to move indoors, like it or not. After we had left the reunion, been to Wal-Mart, and got on the way home, we could really tell he had arrived in full force, with wind and rain blowing right at us steadily the whole way home. It seemed as if there was a giant sprinkler right over the truck stuck on high. If it was this bad this far away, I can see why they insist that people should evacuate from the coastal areas. Remind me never to go down there during hurricane season! The birthday girl for today is Sheryl Marmon, secretary in the Physical Plant and Staff Council Member. Sheryl really knew what she was doing taking this week off! Be sure and go have your mug shot for the yearbook either today or tomorrow between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in Mitchell 109. Someday your kids will want to look at your old yearbook and laugh and say, (A) Did you really dress like that?, (B) Did you really wear your hair like that? (C) You used to have hair? or (D) You used to be skinny? Don't forget to go see the HBO movie sponsored by the Honors Club this evening at 7:00 in Pratt Little Theatre, "Iron Jawed Angels", telling of the struggles of women in this country to earn the right to vote. What a contrast to today when we have high-ranking women in both major political parties, and could possibly have our first female elected in November to one of the top two spots in the country! (Unless you believe the tabloid I saw in the grocery store yesterday, complete with photo, that says Lincoln was a woman. I thought he was a pretty smart, down to earth person. That may explain it.) If any of you still need to register to vote, I believe they will have voter registration forms available at the movie also. Many thanks to Danny Foster and Alan Moss for the speedy and safe removal of some of our large obsolete equipment here in the Cafeteria in order to make room for a much needed freezer unit to be moved into place. They had those two big old heavy pieces of equipment out of here without a hitch faster than I would've believed possible, and all by themselves! Way to go guys! Just brush your hair, (or mess it up if that's your style), powder your nose, and go over to Mitchell 109 between 9:00 and 3:00 and smile for the camera. That's it. It's painless and free! I had to laugh a while back when I saw that some club was sponsoring an "80's dance". When I was growing up, we had "50's dances", or later even dressed like the hippies from the 60's. It never occurred to me that the tradition would carry on and move forward. One of my husband's cousins even had a birthday party recently for her sister who was turning 30, that had an 80's theme. 'Wear your 80's clothes', the invitation said. I had to laugh again because I realized I probably still was. It's funny how I can recognize what 50's clothes are, and 60's clothes, but since I was old enough to dress myself by 1970, 70's clothes were just whatever was in my closet at the time. I guess when you live in a big city, you tend to go with the trends more, and I suppose the kids now are getting more into that, with all that they see on TV, magazines, movies and the internet. But down here "in the country" it's just been jeans and T-shirts for decades. Everything retro has come back in style now, it seems. The only actual clothes I have from that era that I can still wear are my college cap and gown, (one size fits all), and an old tube top which I can now wear as a headband. I guess I'll have to buy new "old" stuff to be in style. It is a lovely day in the neighborhood... I just want to ask you to encourage any student that you know that may be having difficulties with attendance or class performance, to come to SSS's showing of "Rudy". This is a story of a young man's determination to become successful at what he had always dreamed of being. We want the students to have a "dream" (goal) and realize what they must do to accomplish it. I see students that get discouraged because they aren't doing what it is that they need to do, (Yes, it may be their bad choices that cause this), therefore, our goal is to get them thinking about positive changes that need to be made! We all know people that have no problem solving skills. (Many students have never had roll models that possess these!) Please help us get these students on a track to success! This movie might be a way to start that process. "Rudy" Thurs., Sept 18 @7pm Johnston Hall 130 They can enjoy interaction with other students and enjoy the free refreshments! Mildred and I were walking across campus yesterday after having our pictures made for the yearbook, (we waited graciously til the last minute to have ours done in case we broke the camera), looking at the concrete that's been poured and trying to pick out where our offices would be. I haven't gotten a look at the plans in a while and things may have changed, but when I last looked I was at least supposed to have a window that looked outside. I'm surrounded by windows now that only look out into the kitchen and at freezers and warmers. Not much of a view. All I know is, it really better have more plug ins than my office has now. I think this one was built before electricity seriously caught on, judging by the amount of plug ins in the whole office, (approx. 2). I've had to run two power strips in here to plug in all the electric gadgets that offices have to have nowadays. It seems everything's electric now, even to the pencil sharpener! Happy birthday wishes go out today to the lovely Cindy Waldrop, in the Student Support Services office. Have a great day, Cindy. We've really had a lucky break with these cooler temperatures. I know I've really enjoyed it. Now if the daylight could just last a little longer instead of getting shorter and shorter every day, I could get some yard work done. I did get out and pull some weeds this weekend, (I suspect it was ragweed, as I could see pollen flying from it by the tons.) No wonder people's allergies are driving them crazy. Due to some shuffle ups here in the Cafeteria, I got to serve out front this morning. I hadn't done that in quite a while, and it was nice to get to see the students that come in for breakfast, (what few hardy souls there are that can drag themselves out of bed long enough before their first class to come and grab a bite of breakfast.) I almost feel like I don't know who any of the kids are anymore. I still recognize a few faces from last year, but there are a lot of new ones that I'm not familiar with yet, and most of the ones I know must be sleepy heads like me because they don't show up til lunch! SOMETHING NEW AND YUMMY AVAILABLE IN THE CAFETERIA NOW! Ice cream lovers rejoice! We now have available for sale here in the Cafeteria the latest thing in ice cream...Ittibitz! There are always things that need doing before winter, and we're only a week away from October. I've actually already seen some color change in the leaves of some trees and a few Monarch butterflies floating around thinking about migrating. In the cafeteria yesterday afternoon, we started hearing an unusual noise coming from outside and thought there was a lost goose on campus. Turned out it was only a student practicing with a goose call. I hope he doesn't come around here at 5:00 and try to shoot my bird clock when the goose on it honks! (Actually I hope he doesn't try to shoot anything! I love to see and hear migrating geese and hate to think of anyone shooting at them. For people who aren't on campus regularly, you can look on our website at the web cam and see the progress that's been made. Now I'm just worried that they're not putting a window in my future office. I swear I'll be trying to dig one out of the wall with a spoon. Sept. 29 Message-ID: <48E0ED4D.8050906@eosc.edu> Hi folks, What great weather we had this weekend! We could use some more like that! It's hard to believe that Wed. we're going to be in October. Time just seems to fly by, whether you're having fun or not. Here's the perfect opportunity to be a hero; come donate blood at the blood drive going on in the East Cafeteria today and tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The blood you give could very well save a life. And for you dorm residents, don't forget the Mandatory Dorm Meeting this evening at 6:00 in Mitchell Auditorium. Don't make Sally come looking for you! Our menu for today includes: Roast beef Mashed potatoes and gravy Green peas Corn Baked potato bar Tacos Nacho chips with picante sauce Hot rolls And for dessert have some yummy Ice Cream with Toppings or Punch Bowl Cake. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Sept. 30 Message-ID: <48E23F36.5090707@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, lots of things are in the works here on campus, besides the ongoing construction of the new building, (which you can actually see the bones of now, rather than just seeing dirt being moved around). We're having our second day of a blood drive today from 10:00 to 3:00 in the East Cafeteria, Midnight Madness is tonight where (if you can manage to be up at that hour) you can come and see the Mountaineers in their first official practice and also see the Mountaineer Cheerleaders and the Pom and Dance team perform, the annual Kiamichi Electric Meeting will be held on campus this Saturday, this year's Rothbaum lecture is coming up on the 8th of October, with Fall Break following shortly thereafter, then our 2nd Annual Halloween Carnival on Oct. 30, followed by Homecoming the first week of November. Whew! It looks like activity will be nonstop almost! Our menu for today includes: Pork loin Mashed potatoes and gravy Black eyed peas Spinach Corn Rice Hot rolls Chicken patty sandwich And for dessert have an all American favorite: Chocolate Cake.
