I got a rather extreme haircut a couple of days ago though, so maybe if hair weighs a lot that'll help. (Well, I can hope anyway!) I did resist having one of those delicious maple doughnuts this morning, and honestly, if it hadn't been for knowing I was going to have to go weigh today, I'd've probably gone ahead and indulged. According to the Weather Channel we're under a wind advisory, so batten down the hatches. It may get rough out today, and then a cold front is supposed to blow through sometime this afternoon. Tomorrow looks better and Saturday even better still though, so at least we have something to look forward to. April 6 Message-ID: <49DA184B.6080009@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow, Saturday's weather was fantastic for the downtown clean-up day! Quite a few folks showed up to pitch in where needed including a pretty large 4H group, a cub scout troop led by Phillip Hawthorne, Helen Scott and daughter Rochelle, Sheryl Marmon, Terry Haynes, Pres. Smith and family, my daughter Destiny and her friend Melissa and myself, and various other citizens. A lot was accomplished all up and down Main Street, and poor Sheryl even has the scars to prove it! I was working under the supervision of Mike Mooney, mainly as a weed puller right around the Chamber of Commerce office, which was pretty enjoyable. I had to laugh this morning though as my daughter was trying to learn a bible verse for a church project that started out something like, "Though the grass may wither and the flowers fade away..." I finished it for her with, "Weeds go on forever!" I know that's not the real ending, but anyone who gardens or potters with plants will appreciate the truth in it. I feel like I pulled up about a million little weedlings and I know that after Saturday night's rain, about a million more will sprout up to take their place, (and probably be hardier for having more room to grow!) After the clean up day project was pretty much done, the volunteers were treated to a great hamburger lunch courtesy of the Main Street program and the OSU Extension Center. Good job to all who participated! After that little project was wrapped up, I went on over to the PAWS adoption day set up in front of Roy's. We were able to find homes for about a dozen dogs in all and received several dollars in donations, which always helps with the vet bills, etc. Happy birthday wishes go out today to Kim Pendergraft of our EOSC Library, and Danita Oller of the Oklahoma Miner Training Institute. You gals enjoy yourselves! Don't forget for those of you who may have appointments, the mammogram van is on campus over behind the Field House today. General Information: Seminole has new softball/tennis/golf/athletic housing complex, probably nicest junior college SOFTBALL complex in the country. To show off their new athletic facilites, Seminole invited 8 of the top junior college women's softball teams in America from 4 states: All of these programs are nationally ranked or former national champions in their respective classes or recent Regional winners and national tournament teams: Seminole hopes to host the Region II Tournament or even the National Juco Tournament at their new complex, in future years. From Oklahoma: NEO and Seminole. From Texas: Western Texas and Vernon Regional. From Missouri: Jefferson County and Crowder. From Kansas: Cowley County and Butler County. Eastern was invited LATE as the Johnson County Tournament in Overland Park, Kansas, which we were orginally invited to, was snowed out and we agreed to take Vernon Regional's place as they withdrew only last week at Seminole??? Eastern played three games on Saturday, April 4th: First Game: Eastern 3 Butler, Kansas 1. Butler is ranked 17th. nationally in the most recent NJCAA poll. Kelsey Reding pitched great game and got run support from Kendra White's big three- run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Those three runs held up for the win. Second Game: Crowder, Missouri 5 Eastern 0 Karly Bitters took the loss here, only giving up 5 hits, and held Crowder to 1 run thru 5 innings. Rachel Filius relieved Karly in the 6th. inning and held the Lady Riders without a baserunner. The Crowder pitcher is now 15-2, one of the top juco pitchers in America. Third Game: Eastern 12 Jefferson County, Missouri 2 Kelsey Reding pitched another gem here. Jefferson was 21-0 going into this game and has been ranked as high as 5th. nationally in this year's NJCAA Div. I poll. Eastern only had one hit thru 4 innings off the undefeated Jefferson pitcher, a single by Kendra White in the third inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kelsey Reding hit her FIRST career home run, high school or college, high off the left field foul pole, to tie the score 1-1. In the top of the sixth inning, Jefferson's big three- hole hitter hit about a 350 ft. home run to put Jefferson back up 2-1. In the bottom of the sixth , Ashlyn Aston led off with a single and later tied the score 2-2 on a passed ball. Eastern sent 14 total hitters to the plate in the 6th. inning and scored 11 runs and eventually run-ruled the undefeated Jefferson team, on Darcy Casteel's long three- run home run to end the game, 12-2. Macey Moseley's hard single to left which went all the way to the left field wall scored two runs and put Eastern up 7-2. Ashlyn Aston's second hit of the inning drove in two runs and put Eastern ahead 9-2 before Casteel ended the game with her home run over the left field wall. Several Lady Mountaineers had a good sixth inning AT THE PLATE: Rachel Powers, Aston, Sarah Hayslip, White, Casteel, Bitters, Reding, Moseley, Sharla Bullard. Eastern now returns to Region II action this week playing at Rose State on Tuesday and at Northern/Tonkawa on Thursday before the Easter break. April 16 Message-ID: <49E74986.4010002@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wasn't yesterday great? I'm hoping for the same again today, but tomorrow the forecast looks pretty damp. It may rain on the Green Frog Festival, (but hey, frogs love water!) Then Saturday we're going to keep our fingers crossed that any wet weather goes around us and doesn't rain on our EOSC picnic. (At least it's not supposed to snow this time!) Speaking of liking water, I was totally surprised the other night to see a beaver down the hill from our house. We had some down there a few years ago and they would industriously build their little dam and dam up the little creek that goes under the low water bridge at the foot of the hill below our house. Then it would rain and some neighbors upstream would complain that their back yard got flooded, and here would come the county workers with their backhoe, etc., (weapons of mass destruction), and tear up all the beaver's hard work. We went through this cycle a few times, and then the beavers either got killed, or relocated or just gave up in disgust, but now it looks like we've got one back in residence. I enjoy watching their constructions going up and occasionally seeing them swimming or walking around down there, but of course it's not my back yard getting flooded. Maybe we can get the county guys to dig a deeper hole for the water to go into rather than having it back up into someone's yard. Then the poor beavers could be left in peace. Think about it. Those backhoes are to them about like a tornado or a Hurricane Katrina to humans. They lose everything and have to start all over from scratch. You Biggest Loser participants, don't forget to weigh in today. It's not raining, so you won't get wet this week. We're getting down to the home stretch on this thing so get over there and see if you've made any progress. If it doesn't, so be it. We'll just have a picnic in the rain and like it. We do have a shelter reserved though, Pavilion #6, which I believe is not too far from where we had the last EOSC picnic. Don't forget to bring your lawn chairs to guarantee yourself a seat. We hope to have a good turnout in spite of the weather, and want to invite all EOSC employees and their families, that includes staff and faculty, as well as employees from all our other campuses. Remember the Staff Council has been beating the streets gathering up great door prizes from local and area businesses and individuals to make it extra fun to attend. You don't want to miss it! Don't forget too, that today and tomorrow, Wilburton is hosting the Green Frog Festival downtown, with lots of booths selling all kinds of merchandise, storytelling in the Gallery, and lots of musical performances at the Goldberg and Joseph Heritage Park, as well as a "Puddle Jump" race, (wonder if you have to hop all the way?), and lots of other interesting activities. There should be booths open and performances going on to enjoy this evening, as well as tomorrow, so after the picnic is over tomorrow we can all hop on down to the Green Frog Festival and have some more fun! Very Happy Birthday wishes go out for tomorrow to our food services manager, Mildred Whisenhunt, who will be celebrating for all she's worth. I hope she has a wonderful, stress free day playing in the dirt or whatever else she'd like to spend her day doing. Our menu for today includes: BBQ sandwich Potato chips Hard tacos Spanish rice Refried beans Baked beans Macaroni and cheese And for dessert have some wonderfully delicious Strawberry Shortcake. April 20 Message-ID: <49EC907D.5090506@eosc.edu> Hi folks, If you missed the picnic Saturday, you missed a good time, in spite of the predicted bad weather. It was actually pretty nice, if somewhat cloudy. At least we didn't get sunburned. It did wind up drizzling on us some, but we were able to get inside the shelter and keep giving out those door prizes! Our Student Union Custodian, Charlie Lyons, won the high dollar prize of a digital camera. I had told him the day before that he should come to the picnic, and I bet he's glad he listened to me now. (Now if he could just convince my husband what a good idea that is!) I think retired Teddy Marmon and Dave Baudour took the Horseshoe prize and Tim Talley and Sheryl's grandson won the Washer Toss. All in all it was a lot of fun, but what a relief for the Staff Council that it's over and we can quit stressing and obsessing over it for a good long while now! The Green Frog Festival was enjoyable too. Friday evening we went down after work and everything was about to blow away! That was definitely not the best day to be there! People were hanging onto their tents, their merchandise and whatever else wasn't nailed down to keep from getting blown away. Saturday after the picnic was much better for being out and enjoying the festival. April 21 Message-ID: <49EDDA44.6040001@eosc.edu> Hi folks, We've got New Student Enrollment on campus today, so let's show them Eastern at it's best. We know this is a great place for them to start their futures, we just need to let them know it! It looks like this week is going to be a real Spring weather week. Every day coming up looks like it will be in the70's or 80's. I've seen so many signs of Spring lately that I was already convinced. Between hearing my first whippoorwill of the year last week, seeing the beautiful dogwood trees in the woods bloomed out, a flock of geese flying north for the summer and our pond lined with tiny tadpoles, I knew it wouldn't be long before the weather figured out how it was supposed to act. The weather was so nice yesterday evening I even got out and redirected my clematis vine so it would go up the archway and not down the fence. Man, if you don't live in the country, see all the great stuff you miss out on? Be sure & make plans to attend Eastern's 100th year celebration tomorrow on the front lawn. This is a momentous occasion, after all it's not every day that anyone or anything turns 100 years old! The McAlester campus will also be celebrating it's 10th anniversary on Friday. (They're just a little behind the rest of us, 90 years or so, but are doing great things and making a difference in people's lives.) April 22 EOSC's 100th Birthday! Message-ID: <49EF3024.4050005@eosc.edu> Happy 100th Birthday Eastern! What a wonderful day for Eastern! Today we celebrate Eastern turning 100 years old! What a century it's been, too! The original Eastern Oklahoma School of Mines and Metallurgy students would be astounded at the changes that have taken place in the past century. Eastern has made a tremendous difference in so many lives, mine included, and here's hoping our next 100 years will be even better! Don't forget to come out for all the fun on the front lawn at 4:00 today to help celebrate! There will be games, hot dogs, 100th birthday cake, and lots of memories to be made! And to honor Eastern's Administrative Professionals there will be a special luncheon for them at noon in the East Cafeteria. That's always an enjoyable event, with great food and fellow co-workers and friends that we don't get to see everyday. And on top of all that, it's Earth Day! Do something good for the planet today. It's the only one we've got and it's important that we take care of it. Where else are we going to live? Don't forget about the Spring Casual dance this evening, too. Put on your sundress or shorts and flip flops and dance like nobody's watching! Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Frito chili pie Cornbread Crispy cube potatoes Pinto beans Cabbage Fried okra Spinach And for dessert, everyone's all time favorite, Chocolate Cake. And wouldn't you know, it seemed like our AC was AWOL over here and we had a whole bunch of Administrative Professionals and their supervisors about to have a meltdown during the luncheon! Not to mention the Sound Sensations who had to sing and dance for us. They really worked up a sweat! I really enjoyed their program, as did everyone else, directed by Mary Ford, since Paul Enis had to be away for his son's surgery. (Glad to hear that went well.) That medley of rock and roll songs was really great. I hate to call it "old" rock and roll, because it was from back when I was about their age and if the music is considered old, what does that make me? Let's don't go there! (I can't wait to see the kids in "Little Shop of Horrors" next week!) It was a great time though, in spite of the heat, with a wonderful meal and the great entertainment, and I also enjoyed getting to learn a little background info on some of the offices. Now we know who keeps who in line around here! I'm sorry I missed the 100th birthday party yesterday. Asumi and I had to go take care of the PAWS dogs and by the time we got back, it was all packed up and gone! Possibly I'll be able to make it to the McAlester Campus' 10th year celebration tomorrow afternoon. I haven't seen an email from Loma about there being a Biggest Loser weigh-in today, so maybe I'll have time to work off that wonderful Administrative Professional lunch from yesterday. I really did try to be good and clean my plate and I'm sure that didn't do my weigh-in results any good at all. Our menu for today includes: Chicken strips Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Mixed vegetables Pasta bar Chili dogs French fries And for dessert try a piece of Chocolate and Peanut Butter Brownie. I heard from a couple of people that it had come all the way from Damon Valley. Judging from the amount of smoke that was just everywhere yesterday, there can't be anything left of Damon Valley. From now on it'll be known as "the place where Damon Valley used to be". I was privileged to attend the special program put on by Ruth Brelsford's Honors Students at the White House yesterday evening, themed around the area's early history as a coal mining center, and Eastern's origins as the School of Mines and Metallurgy, and it was wonderful. It's always nice to get to go to the beautiful White House for whatever reason, and there was a good crowd of EOSC supporters from the college, the community and OMTI in attendance. The finger foods were scrumptious, supplied by our own Cafeteria. Mildred and the crew can always come up with some of the best goodies for any sort of function and after seeing them being prepared and drooling over them all day, I, at last, got to actually sample some, and found them to be well worth the wait. It was fascinating to hear a lot of the facts and stories that these wonderful students had uncovered during their research into the coal mining history of this area, and the re-enactment of the old radio program "The Big Story" was entertaining and educational, as well as humorous. I hope these students and Ruth know how much they are appreciated for being willing to plan and host a program such as this. I know there was a lot of work involved and it came off beautifully. Thanks to all of you. Good job. Don't forget, if you have the chance, to attend the special 10th Anniversary event at the McAlester Campus this afternoon. Congratulations to our McAlester campus for reaching such a milestone. Keep up the good work. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Gear Up's Cheryl Roberts. April 29 Message-ID: <49F8668B.8000205@eosc.edu> Hi folks, In spite of all the clouds, it feels pretty good outside. I'm afraid the clouds are going to show us what they're made of before it's over with though. There's a pretty good chance of it today. We had a nasty surprise at the house last night. My husband went outside and came back in telling me one of our cats was on the patio with an arrow through her. Luckily it just went across the very top of her back right above her front shoulders and not through her whole body, and it wasn't one of those horrible razor bladed type tips. I don't know how in the world she managed to make it home and onto the patio with about a 3 ft. arrow sticking out of her! We wound up having to run her to the vet's office to have the arrow removed and the wound taken care of. Thank goodness poor Tim was still there working! All my PAWS friends insist he's a saint and I'm inclined to believe they're right. I can't imagine what type person would shoot someone's pet with an arrow. It just made me sick to think how she must've felt, and she's such a sweet little cat, too! Please, if any of you do shoot weapons, be careful and responsible with them. They can do a lot of damage on accident, and even more when you shoot some poor animal (or person) on purpose! Don't forget tomorrow will be opening day for "Little Shop of Horrors", with a matinee at 10:30 and a performance at 7:30, and the same schedule on Friday. Be sure and plan to attend one of the performances of this hilarious musical. As always, admission is free to all EOSC students, staff and faculty and only $5 for the general public. Our menu for today includes: Steak fingers Mashed potatoes and gravy Macaroni and cheese Garlic bread Blended vegetables Baked beans Sweet peas BBQ sandwiches And for dessert have some delicious Apple Cobbler! Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... April 30 Message-ID: <49F9BCB2.1070608@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I noticed the other day when I went down to our Post Office to check the mail that they were laying the sod around the new building. They really had a system going and it was shaping up really quickly. The next day I saw them rolling it to make sure it had good contact with the ground, and yesterday it got a good soaking rain to water it in well. At this rate, it'll probably have to be mowed next week! I've also noticed lots of wonderful new trees being planted on the grounds! Our campus should look wonderful again in a few months when all this is completed and tidied up. While I dread us having to move while still carrying on the regular business of cooking and feeding everyone, (even camps), I am looking forward to seeing it all completed and being put to use after all these years of hearing "we're getting a new building". Don't forget about the matinee at 10:30 a.m. and the first evening performance at 7:30 p.m. today of Little Shop of Horrors. If you don't get to see this fun event today, you can always go tomorrow, but don't miss it! And you can save your Adelitas money today because our menu contains: Fajitas (beef or chicken) Spanish rice Chili beans Corn Green beans Criss cross fries Squash Hot ham and cheese sandwiches And for dessert have a helping of Cheesecake, (maybe after all the Biggest Losers go weigh in!) Just come by Mitchell 102B or Mitchell 109 to get one. Unfortunately, due to an unforeseen error, if you marked that you would like to purchase a yearbook at enrollment, it was not entered into the computer system and you were not charged for one. So if you would like to purchase a yearbook, you will have to pay $35. If you have purchased a yearbook directly through the Business Office and not through enrollment, you will be able to come pick yours up as usual. I hope that this does not discourage you all from purchasing a yearbook. We will be selling them through the beginning of the summer, so if you need to wait a while before you can come up with the money, you will still be able to purchase one! Thanks.
