Aug. 3 Message-ID: <4A76FDC0.3080105@eosc.edu> Hi folks, We should start seeing a few returning students back on campus this week, getting ready for the start of classes next week. Hard to believe summer break is over already! It'll be nice to see our returning students again and find out what they've been up to this past few months, and meet and get acquainted with our new incoming freshmen. I often wish this were a 4 year college, as it seems like 2 years goes by so fast and then all the kids you've gotten to know head off in different directions. Happy birthday wishes go out today to Jennifer Labor of our Financial Aids Office. I hope she has a wonderful birthday and gets lots of presents! Our menu for today includes: Green pepper steak Green beans Normandy blend vegetables Chicken strips French fries White rice And for dessert have a Cookie! And of course, don't forget, our grill is open. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Aug. 4 Message-ID: <4A784BA1.2040108@eosc.edu> Hi folks, We've had some of the students in checking out our new facility and eating one of our wonderful waffles. They seemed pretty happy about getting to have waffles more often. We always had requests to have them more often when we were in the old building, but just couldn't manage it. In the new building, we have an area specially set up for that very purpose, and I'm thinking it'll be getting a lot of use very soon. I hated to tell Pat Bolin-Ratliff this yesterday, but the future little zoology class mascot, Mark or Caroline, the hamster that was found abandoned in one of the apartments is now running loose in my house! Perhaps that's how the little critter got abandoned in the first place. He/she somehow managed to push one of the climbing tubes off his cage and make his escape yesterday morning, and hasn't been seen since, by any of us humans anyway. Amberly told me she hopes he doesn't end up in my couch, and I told her I really hope he doesn't end up in one of my dogs! They didn't seem too interested in him when he was in his cage, but running loose in the floor might be another matter. Does anyone know where a hamster would go if it had free run of the place? I sat his cage down in the floor hoping he'd come back to it for food or water, but perhaps he's still giddy with his new found freedom, and isn't "homesick" yet. I'm kind of surprised my little Ginger hasn't hunted him down and "mothered" him. She thinks she's mama to everything, mainly kittens, but maybe a hamster would substitute in a pinch, if he didn't get scared and bite her nose! Wish us luck with our hamster hunting. Our menu for today includes: Steak fingers Chicken strips Tacos (hard shell) Cheese nachos Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn French fries And for dessert have some Banana Cake or a Cookie. Aug. 10 Message-ID: <4A8035D1.3060900@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Welcome back to our returning Sophomores and Faculty and welcome to our incoming Freshmen! It's an exciting time isn't it? I'm sure you're all excited about our new Student Center which was completed over the summer, and houses the Bookstore managed by Ali Martinez and her crew, Post Office run by Doug Sims, Ballrooms, Campus Security Office headed by Mike Nowlin, Dean of Students Sally Davis' office, Student Activities Coordinator/Cheerleading sponsor Elizabeth Duncan's office, Housing Manager Kerrie Green's office, Student Government meeting room, Grants Writer Kathy Raunikar, a classroom and of course the Cafeteria and Cyber Cafe. Come check us out! Thankfully I can now answer the question about where a missing hamster would turn up if he was loose in your house. Evidently he had his cheeks stuffed with sunflower seeds before he made his escape, so he didn't have to worry about food, but he did need a drink of water. Friday evening after the fish fry, I noticed a movement out of the corner of my eye when I was in the bathroom and there the little critter was trying to figure out how to get out of the bathtub where he'd evidently gone to find a drink of water. I had actually been afraid that he was history from the second he hit the floor with all our little dogs in the house, but he's a pretty sly character and managed to avoid the whole lot of them, but the bathtub proved too big a challenge for him. I got him back in his cage and turned him and all his goodies over to Pat Ratliff this morning to become the Zoology class mascot, (if he doesn't escape again). Good luck with the little cutie, Pat. It should be very educational for your students. Our menu for today includes: Stuffed peppers Tacos Chicken strips Baked potato bar Corn California blend vegetables French fries And for dessert have a delicious Chocolate Brownie or a Cinnamon Roll. Also, if you've been in our new Student Center during the past few days, I'm sure you've noticed the big TVs on the walls. It was hands-on, and Kathy was easy to follow. She was very patient with us, and took the time to make sure we were in the right area and fully understood each step. My only regret was that it was not better attended. I know there are students who are going to be getting frustrated because they can't get logged in or they can't attach their homework to send their instructor, so I want to make you all aware that the workshop will be repeated here in Wilburton and in Idabel. I hope more students will participate. For SSS students, this workshop is sponsored by the Student Support Services program, and it will count toward your required activities for the program. This is important because meeting that attendance requirement enables you to apply for the Grant Aid Scholarship through the SSS program. There are 4 more opportunities to attend. The next meetings will be on: Monday, August 17th at 3:00 pm and again at 4:30 pm. in Idabel. Tuesday, August 18th at 1:00 p.m. and again at 2:30 pm in Room 117 in Mitchell Hall here on the Wilburton Campus. And it looked like several days next week showed chances of rain, too. No wonder I can still look out the window and see green. Usually by this time of year, there seems to be more brown in our scenery than green. I'm sure that's been a good thing for our new plantings here, (most of them anyway, some plants will just be difficult no matter what and summer is a stressful time of year to do new planting), but I love that we have so many wonderful future shade trees around! I noticed that we not only got A new bench outside our building, but two in front and two in back, along with matching trash receptacles and cigarette receptacles. They're really nice looking with EASTERN cut out of the back of each bench. Just another touch to dress up our new building and make people welcome. Aug. 19 Message-ID: <4A8C131E.2070105@eosc.edu> Hi folks, We now have several interesting new "old" pictures up in our building you need to come check out. Various scenes from Eastern's past were hung in the Cafeteria yesterday, (most of them are even older than me!). There's one from way back when Eastern had a football team, and another of a (marching?) band! Even though most of them are from way back, I keep finding myself trying to recognize people in them, but so far I haven't. (I really like the one of our old Student Union Building all lit up at night with a red sky in the background. I like how unusual and colorful it is.) Upstairs I noticed they have kind of a timeline of the front of campus featuring the main Eastern sign in it's different incarnations through the years. The pictures were taken about 20 years apart, and I have to admit, I can recognize the latest 3! (Of course, the newest one is still new so it doesn't count as 20 years on my age yet.) There are also some mining pictures upstairs, which is appropriate, since this was originally the School of Mines and Metallurgy, and this whole area was big coal mining territory back in the day. (Every time someone starts construction around Wilburton, I wonder if they're going to get an unexpected "free basement" in the deal, by digging into an old coal mine!) Congratulations go out to July Employee of the Month, Alan Moss, of the Maintenance Dept. His wife, Julie, got the award a few months ago, so he had to scramble to keep up! Alan is a real character, always cutting up and joking, while still getting his tasks done, and done well. He's always been good to us here in the Cafeteria in seeing that whatever we needed done, gone done without a long wait if it was possible. After all, we've got to keep things running so we can keep cooking and Alan is always a big help with that. (We might slip him a biscuit and sausage every now and then just to stay on his good side.) Our menu for today includes: Chicken and dumplings Green beans Baked potato bar Sauerkraut and weiners Tacos Chicken strips French fries Hot rolls And for dessert, have some All American Apple Cobbler! I'd been hearing that we were getting a new bvuilding ever since I started working here almost 4 1/2 years ago, and really had begun to think they were just saying that, but it has finally happened and next week will make it official and let everyone see what we've waited so long to get. I'm looking forward to it! Today's Best Week Ever event is to be a Slip and Slide. Today's rainy weather ought to help that process along. And everyone will probably already be wet! It's a Lose/Win situation with Eastern's Biggest Loser contest kicking off once again today. Weigh ins will be in Loma Messex's office by the pool between 11:30 and 12:30 each Wednesday from now til Dec. 9, (except for Thanksgiving week; time off for bad behavior, you know). Participation will cost you $30 total, ($2 a week), and a 1 lb. loss advantage is being given to those who pay today or next week, to try and make the bookkeeping task a bit easier. The Staff Council encourages all Faculty and Staff to participate in this contest, for your health, for the money, and just for bragging rights. There's a twist to the contest this time, too. There will be a first and second place winner, with the first place winner receiving 75% of the total money taken in, and the second place winner receiving 25% of the money, so 2 people have a shot at coming out big winners instead of just one. Aug. 28 Message-ID: <4A97F045.5040401@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It was great to see such a large, impressive group of important and influential people, come together with local citizens, former students, current students, staff, faculty and even some retired faculty and administrators to help Eastern celebrate the completion of our wonderful new Student Center. It's great to know there are so many people out there who care so deeply about Eastern, and know how important this institution is to the future of Southeastern Oklahoma and it's people. Saturday is another big day for birthdays within our Eastern family. Gwen McMillen, of the Human Resources/Payroll office, instuctor Julie (Davis) Collins, and Michelle Harding of the EOSC Library all share a birthday that day, and I wish them all a wonderful one and many more. Be sure and come by our PAWS Adoption Day Saturday in front of Roy's Grocery store. We have a lot of wonderful best friends who need a place to call home and you can help with that, and receive a lifetime of joy for your efforts. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Baked potato bar Green beans Corn Hot rolls And if we can figure out how to operate our brand new ice cream machine in time, there should be ice cream for dessert again. Wish us luck, you know how it is with new equipment. You read the manual to see what it says, then have to figure out what it means. Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Aug. 31 Message-ID: <4A9BE465.5080707@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow, it was a great weekend, but seemed really short! We had a great PAWS adoption day Saturday in front of Roy's, adopting out 8 dogs, most of which were due to be put down at the pound, so they were really lucky to escape that horrible fate. It really makes you feel good to know you've helped save those poor dogs from an untimely death, and given them a chance to go on and be a beloved part of someone's family, as they should be. Hard to believe it's almost Labor Day and time for the big Choctaw Nation Labor Day Celebration at Tuskahoma again. Our Nursing Grant Coordinator, Anne Hester, will be there spreading the word about great careers in Nursing, with informational materials available on our wonderful EOSC Nursing Program. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Corn Sweet peas Baked potatoes Tacos Chicken nuggets French fries Hot rolls Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
