Feb. 2 Message-ID: <498716A4.8070102@eosc.edu> Happy Groundhog's Day! I don't know if the groundhog or prairie dog or armadillo or anything is going to officially see his shadow today, but the weather forecast is looking pretty good for the next week or so with warm temps and maybe just a little rain on the weekend, which we can actually use to keep fires down. I called my aunt in Indiana this weekend to wish her a happy 107th birthday only to find out that her step-son who lived with her had died! You just never know! Remember to take good care of yourself, you never know, you may be needing that body for a lot longer than you think! Hopefully many of you will join in the Eastern's Biggest Loser contest when we get it kicked off shortly. It should give you the encouragement you need to lose a few pounds and live a healthier lifestyle to help you live longer. I'll keep you posted. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Broccoli and cheese sauce Carrots Corn Baked potato bar Garlic bread Deli selections And for dessert have a luscious piece of Strawberry Cake. Feb. 3 Message-ID: <49886B0B.2080809@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, last week was sure a strange one. Tues. and Wed. we had freezing weather and ice, with most everything shut down and called off, and by Saturday, I saw a guy walking back from going fishing! It looks like this week should be pretty nice. I'm ready to put the ice storms, etc. behind us for another year, (or decade or more). In our Cafeteria staff meeting yesterday, Mildred shared with us some of the results of the recent survey the dorm students were asked to complete concerning their satisfaction with our Cafeteria and the food we serve. I'm happy to report that the great majority of the results were favorable, and there were a few good suggestions for even further improvement. We just want the students to know that we are listening and striving to provide the best service possible to them. After all, they are the main reason we are here. I'm sure many of them were glad we were finally able to begin serving peanut butter again. Evidently the tainted brands and items have been isolated and while we didn't have any of the products that were in question, we felt we should stop serving peanut related items until the situation had been resolved. Better safe than sorry! Our menu for today includes: Baked chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Baked beans Okra Corn Pasta bar Hot been and cheddar Potato chips Hot rolls And for dessert have some luscious fruity Cobbler. They are currently working on fixing the problem and will mail out all the corrected 1098-T's by the end of the week. Only the individuals with a corrected 1098-T will get a new one. The new 1098-T will have a check mark at the top in a box that says corrected. All the corrected 1098-T's should be mailed out by this Friday. You can go to www.1098T.com and pull your 1098-T up and see if it has been corrected by looking at the corrected box at the top. Feb. 4 Message-ID: <4989BC29.2030606@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Eastern's Biggest Loser contest is about to kick off tomorrow, Thurs. Feb. 5. (So if you were going to pig out before starting the contest, today's the day!) Weigh ins will be in the Field House with Loma Messex between 11:00 and 1:00, and the contest will run until May 14. It will cost $2 a week to participate, or you can pay the whole $30 up front and get it over with. The winner will be the person who has lost the highest percentage of their weight, (not necessarily the most poundage), at the last weigh in. This should be a fun way to get healthier, and give you the needed incentive to go ahead and start that diet or exercise routine you've been putting off for so long. All participant's weights will be kept totally confidential, unless you really want to brag on yourself. For more information contact any Staff Council member, (myself, Anne Hester, Helen Scott, Sheryl Marmon, or Zule Gomez). We'd also like to welcome a new Staff Council member at the McAleter campus, Lisa Gray. Also, don't forget (pun intended) to attend the Improving Memory Workshop presented by Student Support Service's Kathy Howe today at 3:00 in Johnston Room 130. Goodness knows we could all use some help in that area! As part of Campus Ministry week, there will be a concert in Mitchell Auditorium this evening at 6:00 by gospel group "Voice of One". Make plans to attend this uplifting offering. And this Saturday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 the Latimer County Arts Council will be hosting the annual Sweetheart Soiree at the White House here on campus. Admission is free, and wonderful refreshments and entertainment will be provided, but bring some money so you can participate in the silent auction of donated items and goodies, and vote for your favorite decorated "tie" in the "Tie One on for the Arts" contest". If you're artistic and you'd like to obtain a tie for $5.00 to decorate in whatever manner you choose, just let myself or Ruth Brelsford know and we'll get you one to enter in the contest. As a special treat, National Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame member, Bill Grant will be there to perform at the gathering. I guarantee a good time (and great food) will be had by all who venture out for this special event. Our menu for today includes; Pork ribs Mashed potato casserole Squash Steamed cabbage Navy beans Baby carrots Ham and cheese on a bun Potato chips Hot rolls And for dessert, create your own Ice Cream dream with our chocolate or vanilla soft serve Ice Cream and Toppings. We really need this moisture, though, to keep us out of a burn ban. Today and tomorrow are looking really good as far as temperatures go, so get out and enjoy these warm days while we've got them. Don't forget about the blood drive going on in the East Cafeteria today and tomorrow. Someone's life could be depending on your donation. The Sweetheart Soiree was wonderful Saturday night. There was a variety of wonderful entertainment, with our EOSC theatre students performing a scene from the upcoming comedy "Lonestar Love Potion" (and doing valet parking, too) , Boomer Lowrie singing and playing the guitar, a very moving reading of some of her own work by Melissa Heath-Lee, a very funny reading by Ruth Brelsford and C.C. and Suzee Puckett, and great music by famed bluegrass artist Bill Grant of Hugo, all in the wonderful setting of the White House, surrounded by spectacular art work by the various artists of The Gallery here in Wilburton. There was also a WHOLE table full of wonderful goodies that didn't improve my chances at winning our Biggest Loser challenge one bit, but did make me feel like the Biggest Winner while I was eating them! This event is held every year to help raise money for the Latimer County Arts Council so that they may keep providing our area schools with a variety of programs that expose them to various forms of the arts, from music to puppet shows to visual artists and more. Feb. 11 Message-ID: <4992F890.9070303@eosc.edu> Hi folks, We pretty much lucked out last night that the worst of the big storm system that came through didn't hit us as hard as it did some places. I've lived around here all my life and I guess I'm pretty used to the threat of tornadoes and bad weather, (even though I've never actually seen a tornado except on television.) Sadly, that's probably the kind of thinking that causes people not to take the warnings seriously and head for cover. The fatalities that occurred in other parts of the state during last night's storms could probably have been prevented if people had only taken cover. Our biggest loser competition has been going almost a week now, and I was thwarted in my efforts to lose weight by donating blood yesterday. It seems I don't have enough iron in my blood, (so maybe it wouldn't have lost me all that much weight after all.) I haven't felt like exercising this week and the way I feel today, I feel like I ought to just go home, take some cold medicine, get in bed and hibernate. Usually when I don't feel good, I don't eat. It's not a diet I'd recommend, but there are days when that's just all you can do. The bond issue passed yesterday to provide money to build a new gym/multipurpose building for Wilburton High School. It's encouraging that even with the economy in the sad state that it's in, we do still have enough people who believe in Wilburton's future to be willing to vote for progress for our town and our children. Don't forget to come out for our special Valentine's Day Dinner this evening. Your sweetheart will love you for it! After all, it is a Friday, how bad could it be? I'm at least having a better day today than I did yesterday when I woke up all stuffy, headachey and brain damaged and decided I'd be better off staying home recuperating. Belated birthday wishes go out to Carter Mattson and Leona Johnson who celebrated their big day yesterday, (and may still be celebrating). And current birthday wishes go out to VP Leah McLaughlin who celebrates her day today, and also Kathy Scroggins who will celebrate her birthday and Valentine's day together tomorrow. Better enjoy the nice weather today, because I believe a cold front is coming in this evening sometime and we're in for a chilly weekend. Good Valentine snuggling weather, I guess, if you're so inclined. Or a good hot chocolate and a good book type weekend. Congratulations to all the "Big Losers"! Keep up the good work! Remember we have a full salad bar at lunch! Our menu for today includes: Hot wings Shrimp poppers Spinach Macaroni and cheese Green beans French fries California blend vegetables And for dessert have a hunk of Cookie Bar. And in honor of President's Day, my computer has had some sort of a stroke, or amnesia, or some kind of an unexplainable issue, (or maybe it's just taking the holiday off), where when I click on any of my new emails that I still need to read, it dredges one up from back in '06 from Ruth Brelsford asking everyone to let their students attend the Constitution Day program? Don't ask me how that popped up. And it's determined not to go away. I went through some Compacting File program that Jeff told me to do and when it was all done with that I thought sure everything would be better, but not, there's Ruth again. Wish me luck getting it back to normal. I had to borrow Mildred's to send out the menu. Our menu for today includes: Grilled chicken patty Mashed potatoes and gravy Steamed broccoli Baby carrots Black eyed peas Baked potato bar Pizza And for dessert have some of our wonderful soft serve Ice Cream and Toppings. I don't know where they're going, I'll leave that up to Jeff to figure out. He's supposed to be coming in here to give this thing a good going over as soon as he gets done with Mildred's issues. In the course of driving somewhere this weekend, I noticed how unusually many birds were out flying around and singing like crazy. That caused me to really look around and notice that, lo and behold, there are already some flowers blooming. (I'm not saying that they're not going to get frosted to death before it's over with, I'm just saying, look around, I noticed some daffodils and some of that red flowering japonica bush already.) I know it's supposed to be colder again this weekend, but it shouldn't be too long before we definitely notice an improvement in the weather. I'm ready. Maybe we can all get out and take more nice long walks. That should help our Biggest Loser results. It was very educational on my part, as I learned that you can't have just unlimited emails in your inbox. It will eventually cause a problem (i. e. explode) and then your computer will be, as Jeff put it, (and I'm sure this is a highly technical computer guru term), "all squirrelled up". Anyway, it's all better now, and I now know that there's a very good reason for the "Delete" icon at the top of your email screen, and I've been practicing using it. Man I need to take a computer class and learn more of these important little facts! If you're needing a good laugh, make plans to attend the EOSC Theatre Departments production of "The Lone Star Love Potion". Performances will be this Thurs., Fri. and Sat. evening at 7:30 in Mitchell Auditorium, or you can attend the final dress rehearsal today at 3:00 if you can't make the evening shows. Admission is free to all EOSC students, staff and faculty, and a mere $3 for all others. Feb. 19 Message-ID: <499D851A.3010708@eosc.edu> Hi folks, We had sad news in the Cafeteria this morning, learning that Mildred Whisenhunt's son, Donnie Dobson, had passed away last night. We will pass along news of the arrangements as soon as we find out anything. In the meantime, please keep Mildred and her family in your prayers. Yesterday's warm sunshine prompted the daffodils in my yard to spring into bloom. I noticed several of their beautiful yellow blooms this morning when I was rushing to the car to come to work. Unfortunately they were on the other side of the fence and I didn't have time to go around and pick any to bring with me. It's always so encouraging this time of year to start seeing the first few promises of the spring to come. I just hope my silly ducks don't decide they look tasty before I get back home again. Don't forget today's Biggest Loser weigh-in. I noticed several people were off to a great start last week with a loss of several pounds to their credit. I'm looking forward to warmer weather and more daylight so that I can get out and walk and enjoy the outdoors, which should help me shed some pounds. I noticed a magazine in the grocery store the other day with a headline "Walk off Weight in 15 Minutes". That sounded pretty good so I got it. They lost me right away though, when I looked at the article and it said run so many minutes, then walk so many minutes. I have asthma (and short legs), so I don't do running. Anyway I'd have to be scared absolutely spitless (and then I'd probably just freeze up) or something has to be on fire for me to actually break into a run. Walking I can manage. And there are lots of good places to walk around here. We have a track here on campus that can be used, or there's the track at the high school or the walking track at the Gary Rosebure park across from the rodeo grounds. There are also some lovely nature trails out at Robber's Cave State Park, (my personal favorites), that let you exercise and enjoy the natural surroundings at the same time. Tonight is opening night for "The Lonestar Love Potion" here in Mitchell Auditorium at 7:30. Be sure and plan on attending either tonight, tomorrow night or Saturday night. Melissa Heath-Lee have put a lot of work into this, along with blood, sweat and tears, I'm sure, to provide wonderful entertainment for Eastern and the surrounding area to enjoy. Please come and bring a friend. You'll be glad you did. It's free for all EOSC students and employees and at $3 a ticket it's cheaper than a movie for everyone else, and has the added benefit of being a live performance, where you can actually see and talk to the performers after the show. During the break between games we will introduce our baseball players and if our softball players are present we will introduce them as well as this event is about both of our ball teams that we are proud of. We will still pass out peanuts and crackerjacks to the audience and maybe even get in one chorus of "Take Me Out To the Ballgame" at the ballgame. We apologize for this change in plans but we just didn't sinc our event plans with our athletic calendar since we made this plan a year ago. Live and learn. It would be a good cap on MOUNTAINEER MONDAY to get two wins against Carl Albert, here at home Monday night, in our last home games of the year. When we played at Carl Albert two weeks ago it was their homecoming and they had a HUGE crowd down there that Thursday night. Both Eastern teams played real well against them and "HAVE A GOOD CHANCE" to win here at Eastern. Women's score down there was 101-88 and was real close until last minute. Note: This game was 0-0 in the 6th. inning!!!!!! Paris has the best team in their school history in my opinion. They were ahead of Wallace, Alabama(LAST YEARS NJCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS WITH SEVERAL STARTERS BACK) 1-0 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh at Cowtown in the semi-final winner's bracket game on Feb. 14th. They lost 3-1 on long home run by Wallace's big hitter. 25-35 mph winds blowing straight out caused some unusual things to happen in these Tuesday games played in the Paris Festival. Second game: Connors 19 Eastern 11. Note: Eastern was ahead 10-2 with two outs in the fifth, only one out away from run-ruling Connors again(we beat them 9-1 at Cowtown the previous weekend) and Connors hitters came alive. We must have re-engerized Connors softball as they beat Murray at Murray this Thursday, 10-0 and 9-1. Connors had been struggling this spring. Did not do well at Cowtown. NOTE: Due to the Class B High School Regional Basketball Tournament and cold winds and wet grounds we moved the NE TEXAS softball games at Eastern from Saturday the 21st. of Feb. to Sunday the 22nd. of Feb. The doubleheader will start at 1pm. This will be Eastern's home opener in softball. Eastern rallied from a early 4-0 deficit to score 7 runs in the last four innings. Kelsey Reding started the game in the circle and was replaced in the second inning by Rachel Filius, sophomore from Fairmont, West Virginia, who got her first win of the year. Karly Bitters got a save after replacing Reding who re-entered to drive in the go- ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. Emily Gaulden, freshman from Ethel, Lousiana, went 3 for 4 in this game. Second Game: Eastern 10 NE Texas 2 Run rule game in bottom of fifth (8 after 5 innings) Karly Bitters pitched a complete game in this shortened run - rule game. Sarah Hayslip's long home run over the center field fence provided the go ahead run in the second inning. Several Lady Mountaineer players got key hits and made outstanding defensive plays in this game. The Lady Mountaineers evened their season record at 5-5 with these two wins, playing a super tough juco schedule. The Ladies travel to Mt. Pleasant for return games with NE TEXAS this Wednesday before traveling to Temple, Texas, late Thursday afternoon, to play in a prestigious weekend junior college tournament with ranked teams from all over the mid-west and southern states. 16 top junior college teams are entered. Five of the teams are ranked in the top 10 in the country in the NJCAA rankings. Feb. 24 Message-ID: <49A415C2.9030600@eosc.edu> Happy Mardi Gras everyone, And also, Happy Spay Day U.S.A.! While it's not as well known and celebrated as Mardi Gras, it serves a great purpose to bring attention to the fact that there are far too many homeless animals out there, that simply don't have anyone to take care of them. A large portion of this could be prevented if people would just make an appointment to spay or neuter your pet before it reproduces a litter of too many for you to take care of or find homes for. Mountaineer Monday looked like a big success yesterday, with an estimated 400 or so high school seniors on campus to scope the place out. What a great recruiting opportunity! I believe that today is the day that a portion of HWY 2 South was scheduled to be closed for about a month while a bridge is being worked on. This will make it a longer trip for those coming from over 6 miles south. I feel sorry for those people who live on the detour and now have all the highway traffic going right past their house. Our menu for today includes: Enchiladas Refried beans Spanish rice California blend vegetables Corn Grilled turkey and cheddar cheese sandwiches Crispy cube potatoes And for dessert have some Ice Cream and Toppings. Have a great Mardi Gras, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The temperature is supposed to get up close to 70 so it ought to be great for any outdoor activity you enjoy. At least today and tomorrow it's supposed to be nice, then it's downhill for the weekend. It won't be long though, til spring arrives and I'm ready. Our menu for today includes: Dorito bake Pinto beans Steamed red potatoes Cabbage Spanish rice Mixed veggies Broccoli and cheese soup Cornbread Hot rolls Pizza And for dessert have a hunk of luscious Chocolate Cake. Feb. 26 Message-ID: <49A6BAF1.4010405@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I've seen science fair kids running around on campus today bringing in their exhibits to be judged. One girl's exhibit seemed to consist of a big bag of trash, which seemed to be getting away from her, which could be the point: that all the trash on our planet does tend to pile up and get away from us and we need to be more conscious of this and remember the 3 Rs. No, not readin', 'riting and 'rithmetic, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Think Green! Don't forget today is Biggest Loser Weigh-In #3. Time to see if we're all still going downhill. If I'm not then there's no justice, as I've felt really puny this week and can't have eaten much. I also read an article in a magazine the other day that if you got a regular 8 hours or so of sleep you would drop pounds like magic. (I only seem to be able to make myself get more rest when I really feel cruddy, then that's about all I want to do, just sleep til I feel better.) I don't know if there is some physical reason for that, like maybe the body just works better with the right amount of rest. I have a simpler theory: when you're asleep, you're not eating! Maybe I should just hibernate until the final weigh-in. We'll be having our monthly PAWS meeting this evening at the Latimer Public Library at 7:00 if anyone is interested in joining or just coming and finding out what we're all about. We can always use more volunteers at the pens or folks who want to adopt a dog or maybe just foster one until it can be adopted. Our menu for today includes: Pork cutlets Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Sweet peas Macaroni and cheese Hard shell tacos Broccoli and cheese soup Hot rolls And for dessert we have impossible to resist Strawberry Shortcake. It feels a lot more like February today than it did yesterday! And to me that's not a good thing. I guess we shouldn't complain though. I know when we have a lot of warm days too early, it confuses the plants into budding out just in time for a killing frost to send them back to square one, or worse yet to have to wait a whole 'nother year to bloom or put out fruit. I noticed there's a big day coming up in the Duncan household this weekend, with Elizabeth celebrating the big 3-0. Don't stress over it Liz. It's a well known fact that the people who have the most birthdays live the longest. Have a good one! We had another Biggest Loser weigh-in yesterday and most of us are still making progress. McAlester will have their weigh-in today and we'll see how they're doing. I had lost a little after all so maybe being sick does help, even if it's no fun. Hang in there, you guys. It's hard making changes to what you and your body are used to, so don't get discouraged if the scales don't reflect what you'd like to see yet. I'm sure it took a lot longer and was much more enjoyable putting all our extra pounds on than it will be to get them off, but we'll feel a lot better and be prouder of ourselves when we've shed some of them. We'll all come out of this in better shape than we went in! Many thanks once again to Loma for agreeing to donate her time and effort to this worthwhile Staff Council project. Our menu for today includes: Shrimp poppers Black eyed peas Macaroni and cheese Crispy cube potatoes Tomato soup Squash Carrots Hot rolls Cornbread And for dessert have some yummy Candy Bar Cake.
