Jan. 5, 2009 Message-ID: <49622CB3.4000907@eosc.edu> Hi folks and Happy New Year! I hope everyone is back in good shape to start the new year here at Eastern right. I know this weather has been crazy, hot one day and plummeting almost 50 degrees the next, but that's Oklahoma weather. Looks like this week will be time to dig out the sensibly warm clothes again to keep from catching a chill. That wouldn't be a good way to start a new year! I confess I'm having kind of a hard time getting back on "someone else's schedule" after being on my own time for a couple of weeks. I hope I don't nod off into my keyboard before the day's over! One contributing factor in this problem is a little late night guest we've been having at the house. I filled up the bird feeders on our time off with the thought of being able to look out the bedroom and living room windows and watch all the beautiful birds feasting on the sunflower seeds they so dearly love. I've heard a lot of people fuss about having squirrels raid their birdfeeders, but we've never had that problem. (Too many cats around, I'm sure, and I wouldn't mind the squirrels anyway, since they're so cute and feisty. I'd probably enjoy watching them as much as the birds.) I never expected, however, to have a raccoon raid the feeders! I actually got a picture of him on my cell phone hanging upside down by all four feet from our feeder in front of the house reaching up into it and getting the seeds to snack on! To do this he has to climb up into a window box, tiptoe and reeeeach up to get hold of the feeder, but he's a determined varmint and every time I fill up the feeder, he makes his midnight visit. He's also figured out how to get to the one outside the bedroom window, by shinnying up a sapling growing next to it, leaning way out and grabbing the edge of the seed catching tray underneath, to pull the tube feeder over to him. Pretty smart character, huh? Of course he drives our dogs crazy, but I dont' let them bark at him and spoil all his fun. Getting an up close look at nature is worth losing a little sleep over. Our menu for today includes: Pork cutlets Mashed potatoes and gravy Scandinavian blend vegetables Fried squash Corn Broccoli and cheese soup Frito pie Hot rolls And for dessert, make your own Ice Cream creation with our soft serve ice cream and Toppings. Have a great first day back, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Did anyone make any good New Year's resolutions they're sticking to or have already broken? And I thought I was doing so well on that front! Hadn't caught myself doing it once, (probably mostly because I hadn't been writing any checks and that's where that problem usually shows up the worst.) Maybe by June I'll be used to writing 2009. I'm glad the water break on campus was able to be taken care of fairly quickly yesterday. It's hard to run a cafeteria without running water! Of course Sheryl warned us in time to draw up some before it was shut off so that was a big help. What a relief it will be to get into the new building and have all new plumbing and facilities! We've just about wrung all the use out of these old systems in this building that we can. I'm sure this building was up to date when it was built, but everything has changed so much since then. My office has 2 electrical outlets with 2 plugs ins each, and I have had to get two power strips to use in here since every modern thing is electrical, (even the pencil sharpener!) It's good to look over and see all the progress being made on the new building. Jan. 12 Message-ID: <496B6A83.7090800@eosc.edu> Welcome back everyone! It was good to see students back on campus this morning, many rushing here and there going to class, and some still groggy looking coming in for breakfast. I know it's hard to get back into the swing of things after being off, but the time off is so worth it. Of course, some of us have been back for a week now, so we're pretty much over the initial first day back shock, and back into the draggy not-wanting-to-get-up-Monday blues. That doesn't take long. Mildred and I and several others got to tour the new building last Friday afternoon. That was pretty exciting! I found out that both of our offices have a window, so maybe we won't get claustrophobic, now I'm just trying to figure out if my office is larger, smaller or the same size. I'm pretty tightly packed in here as it is, so any decrease in size is going to be difficult to deal with. It could be one of those cases where "everything looks smaller in Wal-Mart", like the TV we bought one time thinking we could bring it home and put it in our entertainment center, only to find it wouldn't fit in the hole. It looked much smaller in the huge Wal-Mart store, and a lot bigger in our living room. Maybe my new office looks small only because it's in a very large empty building. Otherwise, I'm going to have to do some serious furniture rearranging. They did say the ceilings are to be 9 feet high I believe. Hey, as short as I am, (make that vertically challenged), I could almost have a two story office. Don't know where I'd put the stairs, though. Might have to drop one of those knotted ropes down to climb up. Yeah, I can see that happening...NOT! If you see Helen Scott with Gear Up on campus today, be sure and wish her a very Happy Birthday. She's a real sweetheart who really cares about Eastern and its people. Can we have her cloned? Be sure and provide plenty of food and warm bedding for your outdoor pets if you just can't bring them in the house. (I saw something on the news the other day where a pet had kicked over a space heater and caught some people's home on fire. The really unusual part was, the pet was a goat. Man they must've really loved that goat! We've had cats, dogs, birds, iguanas, and even kept baby chicks and ducks in the house at times, but not a goat. They're about as bad as cats at climbing on everything and will eat just about anything. Not what I'd think of as a good house type pet.) And make sure and break the ice on outdoor pet's water pans. Either you all are just too polite to correct me on that, or you're just as thrown off as I am by having a Monday off work to realize it was actually Tuesday. That's okay, it's totally worth being a little confused for the rest of the week to have a Monday off. Or a Friday, or whatever you can get. (Or maybe as Gail Richey told me, the color combination of the red letters and blue background on the menu yesterday was just too hard to read for anyone to notice what day it said it was! I'm sure her vision will clear up soon.) I'm looking forward to today and tomorrow's promised warm temperatures, but look out for this weekend and next week! Temps will drop again with chances of some form of precipitation next week. Actually we could use some rain, as I heard on the news that Latimer County is now under a burn ban, due to severe dry conditions, so you might want to hold off on burning that brush pile, or trash or whatever until the burn ban is lifted. FYI: Due to a recent recall on some brands of peanut butter and products containing peanut butter, we have temporarily stopped offering peanut butter or any items identified as containing peanut butter here in the Cafeteria. She takes good care of the people in Mitchell Hall and several of them turned out to see her presented with the certificate, free meal voucher from the Cafeteria and a cool EOSC coffee mug from the Bookstore. Way to go Diamond! Keep up the good work. You are appreciated. I noticed yesterday that bricks are going up on the back side of the new building, and from the smell, I think they must've been tarring part of the roof. (Progress doesn't always smell sweet.) We're getting just that much closer to being in the new facility! Happy Birthday wishes go out for tomorrow to EOSC employee London White. Have a great day, London! Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Scalloped potatoes Corn Macaroni and cheese Brussel sprouts Green beans Fish sandwich on a bun French fries Hot rolls And for dessert have a yummy Chocolate Brownie! Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Jan. 26 Message-ID: <497DD9F0.8000808@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Don't look now, but the weatherman says there's some bad stuff on the way here. It's already been misting outside for a while and we're supposed to be in line for some ice before it's over with. (Just for the record, I voted against this.) My thermometer says it's 32 now, so we're teetering right around freezing which doesn't help the situation any at all. Be sure and drive carefully on your way home and locate that de-icer if you've got some and your scraper, as well as your gloves, etc. It sounds like you'll be needing them by tomorrow. Our menu for today includes: Roast beef Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli and rice casserole Corn Green beans Hot rolls Chicken strips French fries And for dessert make yourself an ice cream dream with our soft serve Ice Cream and Toppings. Jan. 27 Message-ID: <497F2CEF.8090507@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, here in Wilburton we really got off lucky and didn't get iced in...yet anyway. Oh yeah, all the trees, cars and even weeds are ice-coated, but the roads are more wet, rather than frozen, and when I was outside last rain was falling, not ice, sleet or snow. Now if all that freezes up we're in trouble, but so far it's not so bad. People were able to make it in without much difficulty. According to the Weather Channel on my computer though, temperatures aren't really going up any today, and are actually expected to drop a few degrees, so things could get nasty before it's over with. We had been told yesterday that we would be getting a crew of about 300 PSO workers to house and feed due to the anticipated major ice event that didn't really develop as foretold, at least not here. That's been cancelled at this point. Of course, you know the saying about Oklahoma weather; anything can happen. I noticed a lot of the surrounding schools both north and west of us have cancelled classes today, but Wilburton, Panola, Red Oak and points south are open for business. Our menu for today includes: Lasagna Crispy cube potatoes Broccoli Corn Green beans Hot ham and cheese on a bun Potato chips Hot rolls And for dessert: Cheesecake! Bundle up and have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Jan. 29 Message-ID: <4981D082.7030509@eosc.edu> Welcome back everyone, At least I hope everyone made it back all in one piece without any incidents or "adventures" to report. I know it was pretty slick in a lot of places and all the local schools cancelled classes yesterday and today. Our pine and cedar trees at the house are really ice-coated and bent over, and I had just gotten home on Tues. when I heard a loud noise and saw a limb fall out of our big front yard oak tree and crush a plastic tub that was sitting under it. Glad it wasn't me! I just hope we don't lose any more trees in this latest round of the "Ice Wars". I don't know why but it seems like within the past few years, we've had major ice storms way too frequently to suit me, and we lose a lot of our wonderful trees each time. It's sad that it takes so many years to grow a big, beautiful tree and only a few hours in an ice storm to destroy it. Not to mention the danger to people, their pets and property. Oh, well, cheer up, it's supposed to be in the 50's by Saturday. All this ice will just be mud by then. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Pinto beans Turnip greens Okra Cornbread Hard shell tacos Nachos Hot rolls And for dessert, try a helping of luscious Chocolate Delight! You'll love it! Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Bill Lewark's death. He had just been inducted into the Eastern Hall of Fame back in Nov. and certainly seemed to be an interesting indivudual. What a shame to have lost him already. I believe most of the major ice thawed off trees, etc. yesterday. Of course there is still some ice and snow in shady areas and any moisture that was left refroze last night to once again leave some slick spots to deal with, but all in all, everything seems to be getting back to normal. I had an incident occur last night that was upsetting but not weather related. I had been to our monthly PAWS meeting and was coming up the hill to my house when WHAM! A deer had run right out in front of my car and I didn't even have time to swerve, stop, scream or do anything to keep from hitting it. The car survived, but the deer did not. I hate to hit one, since I sometimes feel like I'm almost the only one in this part of the country that doesn't go nuts over hunting season every year. (I know there are more kind souls out there who don't like it either, but it seems they're hard to find when everyone else is wearing camo and orange, carrying a gun and getting their name or picture in the paper with their dead "trophy".) Our menu for today includes: Baked ham Stuffing Sweet potatoes Green beans Corn Antigua blend vegetables BBQ on a bun Potato chips Hot rolls And for dessert, have some delicious Blackberry Cobbler!
