July 1 Message-ID: <4A4B8707.3060201@eosc.edu> Happy New Fiscal Year, Let's hope this New Fiscal Year brings great things to our budgets! (I know my budget could sure use some improvement!) You can tell it's getting close to the 4th of July when you start hearing firecrackers going off. Personally, I guess I'm past the age when I like the loud ones, and more to the age when I just like to look at the pretty, sparkles in the night sky, (unless of course I get an opportunity to sneak up on someone and really scare the heck out of them with a firecracker, preferably someone who's done it to me in the past!) Cigarette loads have always been my absolute favorite for pranks, but some people, (mainly smokers), don't seem to share my enthusiasm. I'm still looking for a good home, (preferably with a fenced yard or lots of running room out in the country), for the Min-Pin I took in to foster a week or so ago. She's very friendly and affectionate, thinks she's a lap dog, but is too big for my lap, and seems to be very smart, (if only I was smart enough to know how to train her.) I've seen Min-Pins that were about chihuahua size, but she's about knee high or better, and looks just like a small Doberman. If you know of someone who could give her a good home, please let me know. My smaller dogs are tired of getting stepped on! Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Brussels sprouts Scandinavian blend vegetables Pinto beans Shrimp poppers French fries Hot rolls And for dessert have a wonderful piece of Cheesecake! Have a great July 1, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... July 2 Message-ID: <4A4CCF95.60503@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Is everybody ready for a big 4th of July weekend? I managed to catch the very tail end of a fireworks display down at the Yanush Assembly of God Church last night. I was trying to make it down there for it, but things got busy at the PAWS pens, and they started the fireworks without me. At least we adopted out an adorable puppy to a good home all the way in North Carolina! With all the dogs that get dumped out and abandoned or abused, it does your heart good to see one find a good home with a family that will love it and care for it for the rest of its life. We also took in one that had been abandoned, so as far as numbers go, we broke even, but to the puppy that got adopted, it's like he won the lottery! With all the fireworks that will be popped in the next few days, please pay extra attention to your pets. Make sure they don't get injured by any of these explosives. Many dogs and other pets are terrified of the loud popping noises of some of these fireworks, so take extra precautions to calm them down, and keep them as far away as possible from the source of the noise if at all possible. And with the heat, if any pets have to be left outdoors, make sure they have plenty of water and shade to protect them during the heat of the day. Even though most animals are used to being outdoors, they don't need to be left in the sun all day. Some of them, especially lighter colored ones, can sunburn just like we do! Happy birthday wishes go out for tomorrow to our head of security here on campus, Mike Nowlin, (who insists he's several months younger than I am, but hey, he's got grandkids already and I don't, so that's got to count for some age points.) Our menu for today includes: Pepper steak Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Rice Scandinavian blend vegetables Zucchini and tomatoes Sauerkraut and weiners Chili cheese nachos And for dessert have some luscious Peach Cobbler. Have a great, safe 4th of July weekend, Rhoda :-) P. S. Be sure and go out to Robber's Cave and see the annual fireworks display put on by our wonderful volunteer firefighters. rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It sure turned out wetter and cooler than I had expected but can't say that's a bad thing. I'm not into too much heat. I just don't want to move when it gets like that! We went to a great fireworks display put on at the Choctaw Nation Hospital at Talihina last Thursday night, (so that's where all that casino money goes!) Then we went to Buffalo Valley on the 4th where my husband's family lives to see their fireworks and once again, I wound up driving home in a pouring rainstorm! Didn't I say I wouldn't do that any more just a few weeks ago? Oh well. Never say never. Here's hoping Debbie McIntyre had a great birthday on the 4th. Pretty cool to have a birthday that's always celebrated by everyone, huh? It's going to be pretty tricky trying to move and do business as usual at the same time. I bet this crew can manage it somehow though. (Of course, if it was left up to me, it would just be cold cereal or sandwiches for everybody. Cooking is enough of a challenge to me without adding moving on top of it!) Please be prepared to be patient with us as we get moved and settled in, and establish our new routine. It'll be a trial for a while, but it'll all be worth it in the long run, (hopefully before too long a run). Wonder how many times some of our early morning people will find themselves driving up to the old building out of habit instead of the new one? Sounds like Sally and our Cheer Squad were using their heads at the Fireworks Stand, not only raising money for their cause, but promoting Eastern at the same time by having a sign-up book for former students to add their name and address to the Foundation's list, and having applications to make signing up for college readily accessible. Way to go team! (I bet they're relieved the 4th has come and gone and they can get in out of the heat, though!) Congratulations to Kristen Turner on the arrival of her long awaited little girl, Landry Belle. Making her appearance at 3:22 a.m. on July 2, I hope she doesn't make a habit of those kind of hours! Her mom will never get any sleep, but I forgot, that's the way it is with babies (and teenagers). They're up at all hours, and think nothing at all of it. For those of you interested in the history of Latimer County, the Genealogical and Historical Society has completed a book about the schools in Latimer County. There will be a book signing at the Genealogical Society room in the Latimer Public Library this Saturday from 11:00 to 1:00 where you can obtain a copy of this book for $45. Refreshments will be served and other publications by this small but dedicated group will also be on display and available for purchase. Yum, yum! And don't forget about our Grill Menu! You can still get a bundled meal featuring either a hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken strips, hot ham and cheese sandwich, grilled cheese or grilled chicken sandwich, with French fries, a drink and dessert for $5.00. What a deal! The burgers are made fresh with 100% ground beef straight from our Meat Lab and don't go on the grill til you order them. You don't get some fast food version that sits around in the warmer for hours until you come along. Try it once and you'll be hooked! July 13 Message-ID: <4A5B4D1C.2060701@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Hope you had a great weekend, and managed to stay cool. I know that was a challenge with this 100 degree + weather we've had lately and are supposed to have for a few more days. (Just for the record, I voted against it, but it doesn't seem to have helped.) I find it really helps to keep the house cool if you close the blinds, etc. during the day to keep the sun from shining in and warming things up, then at night it's not too hot to open a window and let the somewhat cooler air in. We traded the minpin we were fostering for a different foster dog, as Penny was just too much for me. She could almost drag me around, and I was afraid she would catch me off guard and really take me for a ride sometime. The dog we are fostering now is a little female, black and white shih-tsu named Chance, who was rescued from the pound, and seems to be almost if not totally blind. In spite of that, she's still a happy, pretty little thing, with a good disposition. She's still learning the layout of the house, and of course, bumping into a few things, but she knows to proceed slowly so she doesn't hit hard, and she follows the sound of my footsteps from place to place when I leave the room. Please be patient with us this week. It's time for the big move and according to Rudy's schedule, we'll be transitioning over to the new building during the next few days. We will still be serving every meal on schedule, but the menus will be simplified as we may have to do without some of our equipment as it is moved to the new building. Lots of Happy Birthday wishes go out today to several members of our EOSC family. In alphabetical order, (not age order, I wasn't going to touch that), celebrating their big day today are Betty Eason, Debbie Layton, Jeanne' Sutton and new mom Kristen Turner. What a party they could all have together! July 14 Message-ID: <4A5C9A91.4050309@eosc.edu> Hi folks, According to the weather forecast, we're looking at a real scorcher coming up today, so stay in a cool spot if you can find one, and don't forget to put cool water out for any pets that may have to be outside in this extreme heat, or give them a break and let them come inside til it cools off. Try to limit outdoor activities to later in the day, or preferably later in the week when there's supposed to be a cold front moving in, bringing us down into the mere 90's! Check on any elderly people who may live alone and be without air conditioning, also. I just got word yesterday that my mom's little AC unit went out, so we're going to have to get that replaced pronto. Luckily, we got al Alco sale paper in the mail and they have a couple of units on sale, so that'll probably be our project for this evening. She doesn't run her air conditioner all that much, but she still needs one. You'll want to watch out for "Bad Bugs" during this heat wave, also. We've found about 3 stinging scorpions in our house lately that we did not invite in. Evidently they are looking for somewhere to escape the heat, too. Fortunately, they have all tended to be on our walls where they show up well and I can get a shoe after them. And I saw a scary story on the news last night about a victim of a spider bite. They evidently like to hide in small dark places, like your shoes... And we just thought mosquitoes, ticks and chiggers were all we had to worry about in the summertime! We're still waiting on our big move. We've been cleaning some of the equipment that will be going so it will be nice and shiny for the new building. You know how it is, some things are just impossible to clean unless you unload them and move them totally out of place to get all around them, and that's a big job! This heat has some of our newly planted little trees around the new building looking kind of sadly brown. I hope they can snap out of it and green up again, when it cools off. I'd hate for us to lose any of them before they even got started. They will make wonderful shade to help combat the sweltering heat of our Oklahoma summers, and give us beautiful foliage in the fall. That's one thing I really love about our campus; we do have some very nice trees and landscaping plants in place to add a touch of nature for us to enjoy. Our menu for today includes: Steak fingers Crispitos Mashed potatoes and gravy Capri blend vegetables Garden blend rice Black eyed peas with snaps Fried squash Hot rolls And for dessert, cool off with some luscious Cheesecake. I know, I know, that's still too hot, but if I have a choice between triple digits and the 90's, I'll take the 90's in a heartbeat. Of course, I'd prefer less than that, but big lot of good it does me. I'll just go inventory the walk-in veggie cooler if it gets too bad. This Saturday evening at 7:00 at the Red Oak school, the Red Oak Masons will be sponsoring a Pie Auction to benefit the Latimer County Arts Council in their effort to bring quality artistic and cultural programs to our 4 local schools, Wilburton, Panola, Red Oak, and Buffalo Valley. Please come support this worthwhile cause, bring a pie or item to auction, and/or come ready to buy something yummy. Chances are if your children attend one of our county schools, they've gotten to see one of the programs the Arts Council has brought in for their education and enjoyment, and probably came home and told you about it. This past school year the Tulsa Opera brought their production of Hansel and Gretel to the county courtesy of the Arts Council, and this was so well received that plans are in the works to have them come back again. If you can't come to the auction and you'd like to make a donation, please feel free to contact me at 465-1712 or 448-7494, or any other Latimer County Arts Council member. All donations are greatly appreciated and will go toward bringing more quality programs to our county schools. I woke up enough to realize that the fan had just gone off and come back on for some reason. That made me paranoid. I twisted around to look at the clock and sure enough, it was blinking 12:00, 12:00, 12:00... Somehow with my fuzzy brain and my fumbly fingers, I managed to get it back on the right time and set the alarm for a.m., not p.m. the way I usually manage to do, so I could get to work this morning. Mildred said her electricity had gone off at about 3:00 something and didn't come back on til she was leaving to go to work. She was a little worried what her makeup looked like since she had to put it on on the porch, but it was fine. I still don't know what caused the problem, but fortunately at my house, it was just a momentary lapse. Well, the latest word is that we'll be moving next week. Evidently there were some things that still needed taken care of before we could get on with it this week. Next week it's really got to happen, though. We'll have to be over there before our Singing School camp gets here the week after next. I hate to disappoint you fast food fans out there, but our grill will be closed today. We'll have it back up and running next week unless I'm informed otherwise, in which case I'll pass that along to you. Don't forget about the Pie Auction at Red Oak School at 7:00 this Saturday night to benefit the Latimer County Arts Council. The Red Oak Masons are sponsoring this event to help us raise money to bring wonderful entertaining and educational programs to our area schools. And don't forget, if you would like to support this worthy cause but can't attend the auction, you can contact me or any other Arts Council member to relay your donation. Trisha is a wonderful employee, a wonderful co-worker, and just a great all around person to know, and always strives to do her very best at whatever she does. She has become a go-to person in the Business Office area, who will happily answer all my dumb questions, or find out an answer if she doesn't know it when she's asked. She was this year's EOSC Relay for Life Team Captain, and put in lots of time and effort selling pans, T-shirts, luminaries, moons and stars, etc. to help raise money in the fight against cancer. Not to mention helping with the EOSC Campsite at the Relay, and walking the track. She must like working here, because over the years, her two sisters, London and Amanda, have both come to join her here at EOSC. Now that's togetherness! Please join the Staff Council in congratulating Trisha White on being named Employee of the Month for June 2009. Thank you Trisha for all you do for EOSC! July 22 (First day in new building) Message-ID: <4A672B92.7050607@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I'm still kind of in shock that we're actually in the new building, (even though I'm still in the old one due to the fact that our office furniture is not in place yet), but enough kitchen equipment is in place that we were able to serve breakfast in the new building and will be serving meals there from now on, so get over there and check it out. Just be patient with us as we are really still trying to get everything squared away, hooked up and working right. I felt like it was my first day on the job this morning when I walked in and had to be directed as to where everything was and all that. (I told them I was new at least the entire first year I worked here and that's been a while, but it sure feels true all over again.) We'll probably be out of pocket a lot today, so if you need to contact me, you can reach me at 448-7494. If you need any of the rest of us, try calling Ext. 890. Our menu for today includes: Enchiladas Spanish rice Refried beans And of course, the grill will be open for business in the new Cafeteria. And for dessert, have some luscious Peach Cobbler. Come see us, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... July 23 Message-ID: <4A68803B.50202@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope a lot of you got to go eat in our new building yesterday. I had a waffle this morning and it was yummy! That's going to be nice, being able to have those wonderful waffles any morning you're in the mood for one. There's really been a lot of hard work going on to get us moved in and able to feed everyone over there, and still more will need to be done before we're really all settled in. Our offices are still here in the old building, but we will eventually be making the move too if I have to use cases of canned vegetables for a desk! Creature Feature: If anyone out there would like a pet gerbil or hamster I think, yesterday I got custody of one that had been abandoned or lost in one of the college apartments that had been vacated. I'm not really up on my rodents, but it's NOT a mouse or a rat. It is blondish and white with a short tail, and I named it Mark, since Mark Hill is the one who made sure I got it. (If it turns out to be a girl, I'll call it Carolyn, since Carolyn Prock is the one who got the surprise of finding it in a drawer she was about to clean out in the apartment!) Let me know if you want to give this little critter a good home. He's a big large for the hamster cage I've got at the house. He fills the whole tunnel when he crawls through it, but he seems to enjoy doing it. Our menu for today includes: Cabbage rolls Blackeyed peas Zucchini and tomatoes Crispy cube potatoes Chicken strips French fries And for dessert have a piece of luscious Orange Sheet Cake. Of course, our grill menu is available. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... July 27 Message-ID: <4A6DC29A.4080503@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you all had a great weekend. I got up at 4:00 a.m. Saturday and went with a church group to Frontier City, and spent most of yesterday recovering from it. Even the younger folks were tired after that trip though. It was fun but exhausting! (Could've had something to do with the 4:00 a.m. part. That's cruel and unusual punishment in itself.) And of course, not being a person who can "sleep on demand", I couldn't get to sleep the night before, so was running on very little sleep on top of it all! (Don't get me wrong, I can usually go to sleep at the drop of a hat, but knowing I "have to" takes all the fun out of it, I guess.) I'm still in my old office waiting to move...unless they've decided to leave me here and just haven't figured out how to tell me yet? Hmm... I realized after I had sent out my menu last Thursday that I forgot to wish June Haynes a happy birthday. Sometimes I just get ahead of myself hitting that send button, and there's no "undo" button for that! Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Tacos (hard shell) Corn Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Green beans And for dessert have some yummy Cherry Cobbler or Apple Cobbler. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... July 28 Message-ID: <4A6F140C.1020008@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, I was wondering if I'd be able to get a menu out today or not. They've actually started moving things into my new office. I don't really know how that's going, as I'm in the old office packing up files, etc., but it looked a while ago like the office furniture was winning and the poor guys trying to figure out how to get it put together and fit that big desk in that small office were not. I'd be just as happy (maybe more so) keeping my old desk. It's got lots of drawers that already have all my stuff in them, and it's small enough that I could probably move it around the office without blocking the door. I don't think that's going to be possible with the new one. Wish us luck with this little adventure! I'm sure enjoying this cool weather, even if it has been wet. Normally this time of year is just miserable and I hate it, but I can deal with this. It feels like we've taken about a 2 or 3 month jump into the future and landed in fall weather. Get out and enjoy it while we've got it. If nothing else, it's great weed pulling weather! Our menu for today includes: Pork loin BBQ on a bun Mashed potatoes and gravy California blend vegetables Hot rolls And of course, as always, we have a great salad bar and the Grill Menu to choose from. For dessert, satisfy your sweet tooth with a helping of luscious Blackberry or Peach Cobbler. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... July 29 Message-ID: <4A706494.2040506@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Mildred and I are now officially moved into the new building. Of course you know how it is with moving, we're still trying to figure out how to arrange things and various other details, but at least we've made a start at it. I am going to have to bring a blanket, warm jacket or something as I'm not used to the new air conditioning we've got in this building and I don't have a clue how to adjust it in here without a thermostat. (I wish I could give my excess cold air to someone who needs it.) My old office always seemed to stay warm even when the air conditioning was on over there. It's much better for our cooks, though. They always really suffered from the heat and are loving this cooler environment. I got to cashier yesterday evening at dinner and meet some of our guests here with the Singing School Camp. There are a lot of very nice people here from all parts of the country enjoying our new facility. I think they've been pretty grateful we're not having our customary Oklahoma July weather this week, too. Our menu for today includes: Beef tips with rice Scandinavian blend vegetables Corn Broccoli Green beans Pizza And for dessert Drexel has made a yummy Bread Pudding. July 30 Message-ID: <4A71C9B2.6040309@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well it looks like another un-July like day, wet and much cooler than you'd normally expect for this time of year. No gripes from me. I hate the heat, it drains me, and the cold sends me into semi-hibernation. I'm a big fan of the "medium" and that's about what it is now. I'm still waiting for someone to tell me that the nasty rumor I heard is just a bad joke on all us ladies (and guys) in the new building, that we can't put anything on our walls! I know I should've warned all the ladies out there reading this to sit down before I actually put that into print, it goes so totally against our nature. I hope none of you passed out from the shock. You know that's about the first thing that gets us excited about having a new space, is thinking what we can do to decorate it and how we can arrange our necessities like clocks, and bulletin boards to be most useful and decorative at the same time. It reminds me of a piece I read by the late great Erma Bombeck, who said a woman could walk into the Louvre and see 5,000 paintings on the wall, and a man could walk in and see 5,000 nails in the wall...and weep. It's some kind of guy phobia that we ladies simply don't get, just like having dull, bare walls drives us nuts. Makes you wonder how men and women ever live together, doesn't it? Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Pinto beans Turnip greens Zucchini and tomatoes Chicken strips French fries Goulash And for dessert try a piece of our assorted Cream Pies. Keep dry and have a great day, Rhoda ;-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
