June 1 Message-ID: <4A23EDB1.3020300@eosc.edu> Happy June everyone, Yes, it's officially June now, and even though it's not the official first day of summer, it's sure starting to feel like it. On the up side, it sure made our electric bill go down at my house since we haven't been having to run the heater lately! Of course we'll be needing air conditioning soon, so there'll go that bit of savings. You just can't win, can you? Upward Bound Camp started today. They're here every summer like clockwork, and always seem to have a really good time. A lot of people think that the Cafeteria closes down during the summer since college is mostly out, but little do they know, this is a really busy time of year for us! We have the Dept. of Corrections students pretty much all year, summers included, and have several different camps, some of them really large, scheduled throughout the summer months. And for those of you who like to go snooping in little out of the way places, Gloria Clark, who worked here in the Cafeteria for several years has now opened a little shop east of town on Lutie Hill called "Plumb Crazy ". (It's where the catfish restaurant used to be.) She will be carrying some used furniture, new and used household items, clothing, and later on I believe she'll have antiques and arts and crafts. Drop by and see her. Our menu for today includes: Chicken strips Pizza Corn Broccoli with cheese sauce Hot rolls And for dessert, make your own concoction with our Ice Cream and a variety of tasty Toppings. And don't forget, our grill is open if you'd like a fresh hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken patty sandwich or fried ham and cheese. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... June 2 Message-ID: <4A253E70.9080900@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, the heat wave is over and the rain is back, for a couple of days anyway. I hope you got your mowing and weedeating done during that lull, since the weeds will be sprouting up once again after getting a good drink. Last night, I really didn't think I'd be able to be here this morning. I let some of our dogs out before bedtime, and when I went to the door to let them back in, our "Queen of the Hill", Ginger, the little dachsund chihuahua cross we've had the longest, didn't come back in with the rest of them. I went out to look around and wait for her to show up, when I heard a little whimper, and saw her out in the driveway holding up one of her front paws. She limped toward me a few steps, but wouldn't come much further since her arch nemesis, "The Duck", was between us, and she wasn't going to risk her dignity trying to limp past it and getting pecked on her hind quarters, adding insult to injury. I had to shoo the duck off the path before she'd even think of budging. There was no sign of blood or any visible injury, but she was clearly in pain and wouldn't let us touch her foot without grouching about it and trying to jerk it back. I was just convinced that she'd need to go to the vet this morning, but I put her in bed and babied her, and a good night's rest and staying off of it seems to have done wonders for it, as she was back to her old self this morning like nothing had ever happened. It's amazing what a little spoiling can do for your attitude, isn't it? Also, I was trying to take care of 4 baby bunnies while all this drama with Ginger was going on. My husband and some coworkers had accidentally mowed over the nest yesterday and the mama rabbit ran off leaving the 4 babies there. My husband picked up the adorable little things, put them in an old plastic flower pot that was handy and brought them home to me. I've been trying to get them to take some Kitten Milk Replacement with a little bottle but they haven't quite figured out what's going on yet. If anyone out there has any helpful tips for a situation like this, I'd welcome their input. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Pizza Green beans California blend vegetables Garlic bread And for dessert have a piece of Cookie Bar. And don't forget to visit our Salad Bar, or order something off the grill. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It looked like our driveway and path to the house had turned into a creek! All the water from last night's rain was just funneling straight toward our front door, and I had to traipse right out through it all to come to work! Then when I turned in coming up the west entrance, I thought I was surfing! Water was spraying high and wide on both sides of my wagon. I was certainly glad to be in a vehicle and not out having to walk anywhere in it. I've got to go over to Mom's after work today and wish her a Happy 92nd Birthday. I can't even imagine the things she's seen and the changes she's been through. When she was born, back in 1917, it was a whole different world! Speaking of changes, Mildred and I got to meet Rudy and a vendor at the new building a while ago and go through our kitchen area. Things are really shaping up over there. It's going to be a whole new world when we get over there, too. And it's not that far away from happening! Our menu today consists of: Pork chops Pizza Mashed potatoes and gravy Blackeyed peas Mixed vegetables Hot rolls And for dessert try a sinfully delicious piece of Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Fudge Frosting! I was trying to get to sleep last night but kept hearing that familiar irritating whine in my ear, so I turned the light back on and watched and waited until I saw the little pest and finally managed to swat it. Thinking the coast was clear, I once again turned off the light and got comfortable, only to hear the same annoying high pitched drone all over again. I had to repeat this three times before I finally got the room clear of the bloodthirsty little suckers! I knew if I just went on to sleep I'd wake up looking like I had measles or something, with red spots all over me from the bites. It looks like it's going to be a nice weekend, so get out and enjoy it. I think rain is supposed to set in again sometime next week, (to make more puddles so we can grow more mosquitos!) June 8 Message-ID: <4A2D29B0.2070009@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow, the weekend's over already! In spite of my good intentions, I never seem to get as much done as I intend to, but I did get a lot of laundry put through, so we'll all have clean clothes, at least for a while. We had a PAWS adoption day Saturday, and besides trying to adopt dogs out, we took in several very adoptable dogs from a breeder who was going out of business. My husband was there to help us tear down the tent, and we got talked into taking home one of the breeder dogs to foster, as most of our other members have their limit and then some already. The one we got is a little black schnauzer, about 5 months old, who just seemed petrified. My husband brought her home and sat her down and she just stayed right there, which could be a good thing if that's what you wanted a dog to do, but she acted like she was afraid to move. It just broke my heart to try and talk to her and connect with her and get no reaction, not even a wag. She stayed that way the rest of Saturday and up until Sunday afternoon, and then it's as if she finally decided she wasn't going to get in trouble for moving, and she finally began to act like a dog. Before that, it seemed like she didn't know how to be a pet, or how to react to TLC. By this morning, she seemed like a whole different dog, and we've about decided to call her Shadow, since she blends in with the shadows, but she also has started following me around so closely, that she steps in my shoes! I was sitting outside yesterday evening reading a book and enjoying the weather when a sudden sprinkle came up and ran me in. It felt pretty good to me, but wasn't much good for the book. We're getting closer and closer to moving into our new Student Life Center here on campus. I keep wanting to go over there and see if our offices are done, check out the view from my window, and plan how I'll set things up in my little corner of the world. (Of course, I don't look forward to actually having to pack everything in my current office up and move it, but that's the breaks.) If you've seen my current office, you'll know it has windows on 3 sides, that don't look out onto anything but the kitchen and equipment, so I'll have a whole lot more wall space than I do now. Hmmm, lots more decorating possibilities, maybe? Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Mr. John Fazekas of the Registrar's office. John is an extremely nice fellow who is also very creative, hand crafting beautiful jewelry in his spare time. Be sure and go by and wish him a great birthday if you get the chance. I know it's a couple of months away, but it'll be here before you know it. My daughter and I absolutely cracked up last night at Shadow, the little dog we're fostering. I had gone into Destiny's room and was sitting there talking to her, and Shadow had to follow me in there. She wandered around sniffing everything until she came to the full length mirror leaned up against the wall. She looked at it, with as puzzled a look as a dog can have, seeing her reflection looking back at her. Of course she didn't realize that's what it was, and thought there was a strange dog right there in her face all of a sudden. She backed up a little, and the movement of her reflection startled her so badly she tucked her tail, started yipping like crazy and tried to run out of the room, only to find she had run behind the door and into the corner instead of through it, so she had to backtrack out of that corner and slide around the door, (tile floor - no traction), heading madly down the hall for the living room. My daughter and I were laughing so hard that we probably only added insult to indignity as far as she was concerned, but she forgave us. I don't think she wants to go near that mirror again though. June 15 Message-ID: <4A366281.2080705@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It's looking like a HOT week coming up, so all that mud should be drying up soon, but this weekend was a different story in that category. The Relay for Life on Friday evening once again had to be called on account of bad weather coming in, and boy, did they get it right. My daughter and I wound up driving through one of the worst rain and lightning storms I've ever had the misfortune to be in. We had to take a crew back to Talihina, and on the way back it looked like the sky had just opened up on us! We had to pull over and wait it out since we literally could see nothing but water at some points. Lightning would flash and I'd be looking for tornadoes. Of course I didn't tell her that's what I was doing. Who needs to be in a car in the middle of the worst storm you've ever been in with a panicking teenage girl? I know they warn you not to be in your vehicle in this kind of weather, but looking out the window at the rain pouring down, lightning flashing all around and trees blowing like weeds, I sure didn't see anywhere else I wanted to be! We finally made it home all in one piece, but I noticed the next day that there was a HUGE tree uprooted in someone's front yard on Golf Course Road. I couldn't tell if it damaged the house or not, but if it didn't it's a miracle! Then Saturday night was about the same story, except I was NOT out in it then. I don't mind storms so much if I'm safe at home with flashlights and candles at the ready. Wish it would stay like that! My daughter was jealous when she came in to talk to me and found such a good breeze blowing in my room on the west side of the house, when none was blowing her way on the east side, but she decided she'd rather go back in her hot room and watch TV, rather than come in my cooler room and sleep. The East Cafeteria looks to be full of Cheerleaders having camp today, just one of many camps we'll be hosting this summer. I'm thinking probably the Singing School camp will be using our new building. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to the Nursing Department's Betty Wharton. Have a great one and many more! Our ice cream machine has been very unpredictable lately, up one day and down the next, (and down today), and the remaining working elevator has gone into malfunction mode, as well as a freezer and a cooler! On the up side though, my office feels cooler than it has in a while, so the AC must be working again! It seems like it's one of those Murphy's Law days, where anything that can go wrong will, and at the worst possible moment. It should be a really great week for those of you who like it really hot and dry, because that's what it looks like is coming up. I really feel for those folks who have to be out working in it. I want to fall over from just thinking about the heat! I love that little window of time in the evening when it cools off enough for you to get out and do some yardwork, etc., and before it gets too dark. Be sure and water your plants thoroughly and put out plenty of water for your outdoor pets, too. Don't do what I did and water a batch of kittens! We have a little female cat that we've taken in and she's really had a rough year. Her previous owners moved off and left her, so she just scooted across the road and moved in at our place, then she got shot with an arrow recently and had to be taken to the vet, then before too long, we found out she was pregnant! We had her and the kittens a bed made in a wooden box in front of the house, but for some reason, this became unsatisfactory to her so she moved her babies somewhere else. I had not watched her long enough to figure out where she'd put them yet, but noticed that I needed to water my plants, so I went and got my watering pot and proceeded to water in amongst the foliage in a big half barrel planter, when I started hearing mewing! That's one way to find kittens, I guess. Glad I wasn't using the hose! I think I discovered a really good cost savings yesterday in attempting to write something on a piece of paper I had placed on the hot concrete outside. My hand almost fried where it came in contact with the sunny surface. I believe we could shut off the grill and fry all our eggs and burgers outside on the sidewalk with no cost at all in gas or electricity! And I know it's hot enough to make Sun Tea! (And if it's hot enough for all that, remember to be very careful with anyone, especially small children or pets who have to or want to be outside in it! With the temperature this high and the heat index even higher, it's way too easy to have a heat stroke in no time at all.) I really did come up with a handy idea at the house for saving water, work and mess, though. My husband just put an air conditioner in our living room window this past weekend and it had started dripping onto the ground underneath like crazy, so I stuck a big water tub under it to catch all that water to be used for the outside critters and watering plants. (I know the duck will love it when he finds that tub full of water. So much for stopping the mess!) June 24 Message-ID: <4A423E2F.8070803@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It's good to hear from Rudy's email that the new building is so near completion. And definitely good to know that the elevators have been blessed. One of the ones in the building we're in has been out for months, which has really curtailed what could be done in the Ballroom, and the other one frequently throws fits and has to be looked at by an elevator repairman. I believe it's cursed. (I know I've heard it be cursed at before...) Some of our crew have finally gotten to go see the new building for the first time from the inside today. Now we can find out what the real cooking experts think about the new digs. I thought we might get a little shower yesterday evening. I was outside and it looked like just to the south the sky was clear and blue and just to the north, it was full of menacing gray clouds. I even heard thunder a time or two, but time went on, the world turned, and whatever rain I thought we would get fell somewhere else. Oh well, it would've probably just made it steamy anyway. And I'd've had to move kittens again. Happy birthday wishes go out today to Mr. Agriculture himself, Leland Walker. Hope he has a great day doing what he enjoys, especially if it involves air conditioning. Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Pinto beans Crispy cube potatoes Corn Broccoli and rice casserole Baby carrots Chicken crispitos And for dessert, have a piece of Chocolate Cake. Keep cool, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... June 25 Message-ID: <4A4394C5.4050505@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Believe it or not, I actually got sprinkled on a little bit going home yesterday. (I had to check and make sure the drops were on the outside of the windshield, because I had a slightly nervous min-pin I'd picked up to foster drooling all over everything in the car and I thought it could've been coming from her.) I've seen min-pins before but the ones I've seen were more like chihuahua size. This one actually looks like a knee-high doberman. She's bigger than our dogs and Thank God she's mellow because they tend to get grouchy when anyone new gets in their face and she wanted to sniff everyone and get acquainted, of course. I was really afraid the cats would freak out and cause a problem, but I held her back far enough they saw she was not threatening them. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to our Human Resources director, Joyce Bills. She's a really special person and I hope she has a super great day! She deserves it! And tomorrow, her equally great sister, Karen Clark, of our Registrar's office, will be celebrating her birthday, also. I hope you both have a great celebration! Music lovers should plan to attend the Curtis Howze and Friends concert, sponsored by the Latimer County Arts Council, and held at the Presbyterian Church at 7:00 this Saturday, June 26. Admission is $10 and free refreshments will be provided. Tell your friends and come enjoy the great bluegrass and gospel music. Our monthly PAWS meeting will be held this evening at the Latimer Public Library if any of you would like to attend. We can always use more caring volunteers. There are many more dogs out there than we can possibly take care of, so if you'd like to help, just come this evening at 7:00 and join up. Our menu for today includes: Chili cheese dogs Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Blackeyed peas Corn Zucchini and tomatoes Hot rolls And for dessert have a serving of Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar. Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... June 29 Message-ID: <4A48D5EB.6030806@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we're supposed to be having a "cool spell" with the temperature only getting up into the 90s today! (How ridiculous does that sound, that that's considered cool, but after last week, I understand it and am even looking forward to it!) Don't forget to stop by the EOSC Cheerleaders Fireworks Stand by the pawn shop and get ready for the 4th! It's coming at us this Saturday and you know you'll need some firecrackers, smoke bombs, Roman candles, etc. to celebrate with. Go by and support our cheerleaders! Our menu for today includes: Chicken strips Chili cheese fries Baked potato bar Gravy Corn Broccoli with cheese Hot rolls And for dessert you have a choice between Peach Cobbler or Cherry Dump Cake. June the Last Message-ID: <4A4A26D4.9080004@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, June is coming to a screeching halt today. (It's June 30th for those of you who can't quite remember that little poem.) The forecast is for it to be cooler than last week but still somewhat warmer than normal. (Of course, with Oklahoma weather, who's to say what's normal?) All I know is the days have been pretty darn hot, but the evenings and nights are not so bad, (if you have mosquito spray). Too bad most of us have to be awake in the daytime and asleep when it finally gets nice out! I could really become pretty nocturnal during the hot months like this. I noticed Sally sent out the OLS Agenda for this fall yesterday. It'll be here before we know it! And we'll be in the new building! How exciting! After all these years of planning and waiting, we're almost there! I got a cool new magazine for women in the mail the other day called N Common, dealing with lifestyle connections of southeast Oklahoma . I had never heard of it before but evidently it's out of McAlester! It has a lot of advertisements for area businesses, even The Gallery here in Wilburton, and articles about interesting places to go in southeast Oklahoma, including our own Robber's Cave! I even saw Coach Stone's picture in it! The greatest part is it's free and you can subscribe by calling 423-1700. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Deli selections: Ham, bologna and turkey Green beans Carrots Hot rolls And for dessert have a Cookie or two! Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: http://lists.onenet.net/pipermail/eoscstudents/attachments/20090630/3bfed86b/attachment.html
