We're promised a good dose of it along with much cooler temperatures for this weekend, though. Sounds like it'll be a good time to stay in with a good book and catch up on your reading, or maybe do some housework (yuck). How about a good movie and some popcorn? Today at 10:30 or tonight at 7:30 will be the last performances of Little Shop of Horrors so make sure and plan to attend whichever time you can. I hope to attend this evening myself since I'll be at work during the matinee. Our menu for today includes: Enchiladas Refried beans Corn Chicken nuggets French fries And for dessert have a yummy piece of Chocolate Cake topped with Chocolate Frosting. May 4 Message-ID: <49FEFF7C.60703@eosc.edu> Hi folks, What a wet weekend we had! I think our April showers are running overtime. I'm ready for sunny days and 73 degree weather. Of course, around here, the sunny thing usually gets overdone, too, and we don't see 73 until sometime in the middle of the night, but we can hope. At least the sod around our new building ought to be taking root nicely what with all this rain, (if it hasn't washed away). It's hard to believe it's graduation week once again here at Eastern. Seems like the two years that the students spend here goes by so fast! Those of you who missed the play last week really missed a great show! We have really got some very talented kids here in our theater department and I wouldn't be at all surprised in years to come for some of them to become very famous. Congratulations to everyone involved with making this latest EOSC Theater offering the wonderful success that it was! Don't forget to check your bookshelves for children's books you don't need anymore suitable for 6th grade and under, to donate to the PTK Project Graduation Book Drive going on the rest of this week. It's a great way to clear out some space in your house and share the joy of books with someone else. (Think of it as book recycling. It's a very green thing to do.) Don't forget to bring your checkbook or maybe your mad money tomorrow for the big Staff Council Jewelry Sale in the East Cafeteria. The proceeds of this sale will be donated to the Relay for Life fight against cancer, so dig deep and buy some bling for yourself or maybe for your Mom. Mother's Day is this Sunday, you know. And I'll bet there are plenty of about-to-be-graduates out there who would appreciate something shiny to show off to mark their special achievements. It looks like the sun is out and it seems like forever since we've had that happen! I was awake last night when another round of rain came through, and it made me think of one of those oscillating sprinklers. The rain would come down really hard, then stop, then start again, then stop, like a hose or sprinkler that was turned on my house and then turned somewhere else, over and over. Then this morning when I woke up (early) to come to work, I was really having second thoughts after seeing how dark and rainy, (complete with lightning), it was outside. It sure started to seem like a good idea to stay home at least til daylight, if not altogether! It seems to be over all that now, though, so maybe everything will have a chance to start drying out before the next round of storms hits. Don't forget to shop the Jewelry Sale in the East Cafeteria today. Part of the proceeds will go to benefit the Relay for Life in their fight against cancer. Graduations and Mother's Day are both right around the corner and you know you'll need gifts for these. Besides you might find something you can't live without! Graduation day is finally here, (or already here, depending on your perspective). Congratulations on another successful year here at EOSC, and best wishes to those of you who will be leaving us after this semester. I hope you remember your days at Eastern fondly and come back and see us sometime. You know you'll want to come and see the new building when it's complete, and visit the friends you'll be leaving behind. Sorry for being MIA yesterday, but I was feeling achy and icky and figured the best place for me was home in bed. When I feel bad, just sleeping til it goes away is usually my best remedy. I'm back in commission again today, though, and feeling much better. I missed the Biggest Loser weigh-in yesterday, even though I was feeling pretty light after feeling too icky to eat much. Don't forget to check out the Silent SWEET Auction over by the Business Office. I just came by there and there are all kinds of wonderful looking goodies that have my sweet tooth throwing fits and my stomach telling me it doesn't care if I don't lose a pound this week, it just wants some goodies! There are several delicious looking cakes, and some wonderful looking pies and cookies that could really put you in a better frame of mind. The bidding starts at 10:00 so get over there and stake your claim. All the proceeds go to the Relay for Life so bid as generously as you can, especially if you find a favorite dessert of yours over there on the table! Our Graduation Day Lunch menu consists of: Soft tacos Pinto beans Turnip greens Sauerkraut Crispy cube potatoes Cornbread Pigs in a blanket French fries with chili and cheese And for dessert have some luscious Ice Cream and Toppings. Can't guarantee how long, though, since it seems like we've been in one of those almost Biblical rainy seasons. Has it been 40 days and 40 nights yet? It seems like it to me. I think even our duck is getting tired of all this water. I got to attend the 100th graduation at EOSC Friday evening and listen to former Oklahoma governor George Nigh speak. He gave a very encouraging and humorous talk letting the students and everyone else know that you can be somebody and do great things even if you come from a small place and humble beginnings. He himself is from around McAlester, attended college here at Eastern, and knew from a young age that he wanted to be governor. And the rest is history, as they say. He didn't let anything stop him from achieving his goal. He also cited Carl Albert, known as the Little Giant from Little Dixie, who was from Bugtussle, (yes, there really is such a place; it wasn't just made up on the Beverly Hillbillies), and went on to become the Speaker of the House in Washington D. C. If I'm not mistaken, that's about 3rd in the line of succession from the presidency, (way over my head). I especially wanted to attend the graduation to be there for Asumi Saijo, a wonderful young lady from Japan, who has been helping me at our PAWS pens for a while now, and will be going back to Japan next week. She has been a very big help to me and to PAWS and I will really miss her. If we're lucky they'll veer somewhere else and we'll get to see that mysterious bright light in the sky again today. I had a vague recollection of seeing it sometime in the past, but couldn't quite remember what to call it. If it would just come back again, I think I could remember what it is. It's Day 2 of Finals Week. I hope everyone's well prepared and feeling good about their tests. Be sure and get a good night's sleep every night so you'll be mentally alert and on top of things, and come in and get a good breakfast, too. I know college students are not generally big breakfast eaters, when it comes to getting up early and making it to the Cafeteria in the morning, but a good breakfast should improve your mood and your brain power. Quite a few of the students and employees, too, have been enjoying our open grill trial this week. You can come in and order a fresh grilled hamburger, cheeseburger, grilled chicken sandwich, fried ham and cheese sandwich or chicken strips, and get a drink and dessert with it. This is something we're trying out just this week in preparation for going to the new building, and it seems to be a big hit with some of our crowd. Those of you who miss the old Coffee Shop may want to come in and order something like you used to be able to up there. Sadly, we don't have the great view down here that Susie did upstairs, but that's the breaks. There were lots of people in attendance at Leah (Miller) McLaughlin's going away reception yesterday. May 14 Message-ID: <4A0C33C4.2030600@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, it looks like another wet day. I remember lightning flashes waking me up last night, and noticing that my clock was blinking, so evidently our electricity got knocked out for a time. It's a miracle we all woke up to come to work and go to school this morning, because I'm not at my best trying to fix the alarm when I'm already groggy. The a.m.'s turn into p.m.'s a lot of times and I usually don't find it out until it's too late. I must've gotten it right this time as we woke up on schedule pretty much. Today is the final Biggest Loser weigh-in on our campus, so think light, people. Today will determine who will walk away with the pot, bragging rights and quite a bit lighter than they started out being, and the winner will be announced next week. I know I'm not the winner, I'm not much of a dieter, but I have lost a few pounds during the course of the contest, and started consciously thinking more about my eating habits. I'm more inclined to resist sitting around nibbling on something now than I was before. Just thinking about going in there to face Loma and seeing the scales going up instead of down makes you feel really ashamed of yourself. All in all, whether you're the winner or not, anyone who participated and got even a little bit motivated to do anything to get themselves in better physical condition is a winner. Just keep in mind that we only get one body in this lifetime and it has to last as long as possible. We have enough strikes against us with all sorts of diseases, ailments, environmental factors, etc. waiting to sneak up and cause us problems, without just letting ourselves get out of shape. (And yes, I know round is a shape, but it's not the best shape for good health.) I'm hoping to have lost another pound or two when I go to weigh in today. That should put me at a weight I've been hoping to see again for a while now, (one that I thought was just horribly huge when I was 20 and skinny, but would love to see again now that I've been above and beyond it.) I know there have been people asking the Staff Council if we'll be doing the Biggest Loser again next year already, so we're going to talk about that. It seems to have been a really good thing, so if Loma is still willing to work with us, we'll probably try it again. Our menu for today includes: Chicken chunks Chicken fried steak sandwich Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Potato chips And for dessert, create your own special concoction with our Ice Cream and Toppings. Have a great day and good luck with finals, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... At least that's what I hear, (and am hoping for). Of course, tomorrow is supposed to be a totally different story. (It'll be my daughter's 16th birthday and there's an 80% chance of rain.) Next week is supposed to be pretty dry and warm and I'm planning on being off for a good portion of it. I'll be in a couple of days or parts of days to do some things, like turn in payroll, (for some reason people seem to think that's really important around here), and attend a short session on Thurs. but other than that, I'll be really scarce around here. I'll try to talk Mildred into sending out some sort of a menu. I really want to be here Tuesday morning for the Biggest Loser presentation, at 9:30 in the Administration Building. Somebody is going to be very happy, and should be very proud of themselves for working hard to win this thing. Everyone who participated should be proud that they at least tried and probably lost a few pounds along the way. Now we just need to work on keeping it off and maybe taking off a little more, or toning up what we've got. I heard on the radio this morning that this weekend is the Italian Festival at McAlester, if it doesn't get blown down or rained out! I had big plans one year several years back to go to it and when I got there, they told me most of the tents had gotten blown down the night before and they had pretty much called it off. Bummer! It's a neat thing to go to, so try to get by there if you get the chance. Boy the parking lot behind Johnston Hall is really clearing out, and finals are almost over. Everybody have a great summer! Take some time and do something you always wanted to, maybe go someplace you've never been, or somewhere you'd like to get back to. Unwind and destress, and come back ready to learn, (or to teach). And for those of you who won't be coming back in the fall, have a great life with much success and happiness and come back and see us when you can. The original plan as far as our grill cooking goes, was to try it this week and see how it went over so we might know how it would work when we get into the new building. It has gone over so well that we're just going to keep it going, for fear of starting a riot if we try to stop. For today the menu will be your choice of our grilled items with French fries and cookies for dessert! Have a great day or summer if you won't be here then, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... May 19 Message-ID: <4A12D9FC.1000302@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I'm back in today (mostly to get out payroll and see who the Biggest Loser is) after having a very nice day at home yesterday. (I got a lot done, maybe not by anyone else's standards, but a lot for me anyway.) I will be off again tomorrow and back in at least Thurs. afternoon for a class, then off again Friday. Talk about a split up week! I hope I can keep track of whether I'm coming or going. I'm proud to announce that Susie Smith of the Cafeteria won the Biggest Loser contest, and I can tell you that she worked hard for this. (She ate less, walked laps and even ate nasty grapefruit! Ugh!) Her motivation to begin with, was the fact that her husband said that if she'd lose weight, he'd quit smoking. He'd better get ready to be a quitter because she's definitely doing her part! Of course then, the Biggest Loser contest just helped her with her goal, and gave her some added incentive to boot. Happy Belated Birthday wishes go out to Mr. Steve Akins who had a birthday on Saturday May 16. I had forgotten that he and my daughter share a birthday, along with Susie Smith's daughter, Sidney. (Of course, he had it first.) Don't forget to go check out the Bookstore's new line of Burt's Bees products, including lip gloss, and hair and body wash products, made with no chemicals and no gross animal testing. And while you're in there pick out a Bargain Book to pass some summer hours with. Don't you just love a good book? Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Mixed vegetables Hot rolls Salad bar And for dessert have a piece of Bundt Cake. May 27 Message-ID: <4A1D52DE.8010509@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I'm back from several very enjoyable days off. I got some stuff done at my house, helped with a PAWS adoption day or two, got some reading done, napped when I wanted to and just enjoyed life. Now I just have to play catch up here at work. It's time for inventory, finishing up all my monthly stuff that has to be done to complete my monthly report, and starting to pack some stuff up to get ready for the upcoming move would probably be a good idea if I could fit it into my schedule. Now I know why I haven't taken days off before! A few birthdays of note occurred while I was off: Alan Moss celebrated turning one year ornerier on Saturday, May 23, our (mainly pastry) cook, Drexel Browne, had a birthday on Sun. May 24, and our Dean of Students, Sally Davis celebrated her big day on Monday. How she got a national holiday declared on her birthday, I don't know. I hope they all enjoyed themselves very much, and if I know those three, they probably did. Congratulations to Amanda White who was selected the Emplyee of the Month for April. Since I was off some last week, I missed the presentation, but I will be getting her her certificate for a free meal in the Cafeteria shortly. Good job, Amanda! Gear Up Camp starts their first run of the summer on campus today. We'll be having them in for lunch and dinner. I bet our Gear Up crew has been and will be very busy for the forseeable future! Good luck, crew! Our menu for today includes: Chicken nuggets French fries Pizza Pasta Corn Green beans And for dessert have a hunk of German Chocolate Cake. And don't forget, the grill is still open! Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... May 28 Message-ID: <4A1EA56C.90501@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, I love these short weeks! I just realized that with our summer hours in effect, this is pretty much Friday. What a rough week I've had. A holiday, a vacation day, a couple of work days, and now a weekend. What a deal! Very happy and healthy birthday wishes go out to Loma Messex for this coming Saturday, May 30. She was such a big help with our Biggest Loser contest and she actually wants to help us do it again! We were afraid we'd have to twist her arm to get her to sign up to do all that weighing and encouraging again, not to mention the spreadsheet, but like a trooper, she's ready to help us all get healthier next time. Way to go, Loma. You're a great example for all of us. Anyone who is looking for a loving new family member, should come to our PAWS adoption day this coming Saturday in front of Roy's Grocery Store. We have lots of dogs, small and large, young and old, that would love to find a forever home with a nice family. Our menu for today includes: Brisket Mashed potatoes and gravy Fried squash Corn Chili dogs Hot rolls Our selection of hot of the grill items And for dessert try some of our delectable Punch Bowl Cake. It's wonderful stuff! Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
