Message-ID: <4AEEFEDE.2070106@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow, what a great weekend it was for the Carnival! I got my caramel apple first thing this year after missing out previously, so my sweet tooth is happy. (They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but I'm pretty sure a caramel apple a day won't keep the dentist away. I still love 'em though!) And the weather was beautiful, topped off by a big full moon for Halloween. It's looking like a great week coming up for Homecoming, too. The weather just couldn't be better. Today's featured events are Shopping Cart Jousting at 4:00 at the walking track, (makes me think of the after Christmas sales at Wal-Mart), followed by Chris Carter, Mentalist, at 7:00 in the auditorium. I can't wait to see this! Then the Goddard Building will be open for groups who have floats entered in Saturday's Homecoming Parade to work on their entries at 9:00 p.m. IMPORTANT NOTE: The grill will not be open today! Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Our menu for today includes: Chicken and dumplings Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Monterrey blend vegetables Broccoli and cheese soup Tacos Refried beans Hot rolls And for dessert, satisfy your sweet tooth with a hunk of delicious Chocolate Cake. Have a great Homecoming Week, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Although we do not have an Art program, the courses can be taken as electives. There will be adult continuing education sections for both courses. The classes will be taught at the Gallery in downtown Wilburton. Many thanks go to Mike Mooney for supporting the return of art to Eastern's curriculum by providing a space for the classes and to Les Brelsford for brokering the deal! That is an awesome number of people who brought their children to our college and our community to enjoy a safe and enjoyable Halloween. Jones Academy alone brought over two bus loads of students who didn't want to do anything else but go to Eastern for the Carnival. The list of people who made this carnival a success is so long that I will send a general "thank you" to all clubs and club sponsors who gave up their Saturday and many days before to set up food and game booths, trunks for trick or treating, two area churches that brought out their parishoners to help us out, Extreme Inflatables who set up our fun free stuff for people to play in, PTK for tearing down, picking up trash and setting up and running the inflatables, Eastern Baseball for helping to set up tables and chairs, Wilburton Chamber of Commerce, Wilburton Main Street and the City of Wilburton Mayors office for supporting us and producing the best "Boo Parade" we have ever had and many others who made our Carnival the place to be on October 31st 2009. The Haunted Dorm was again another "smashing" success just like last year. On Saturday alone they saw over 190 patrons getting their pants scared off. I want to thank my staff. I believe I have the best staff on campus. They are always willing to try any crazy idea I come up with (even the bad ones) and have the best "we can do it" attitude I have ever seen. Thank you Eastern Student Services staff for making my job easier and for ultimately making me and our college look good. Now on to another busy Homecoming week. I hope you will get an opportunity to come out and enjoy the activities at 4 pm and 7 pm every day. Nov. 3 Message-ID: <4AF04D79.8000105@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Looks like another beautiful day outside for Homecoming Week. The 4:00 event today is called Bubble Trouble, and will take place at the Clock Tower. I don't know what this event is all about, but I think I heard Sally saying something about human sized balloons, so it should be very interesting. Then at 7:00, the Mr. Eastern contest will take place in Mitchell Auditorium. This event is always hysterically funny, but not always suitable for smaller children. As Sally said yesterday evening at the mentalist program, we don't want them to have to have years of therapy, so they should probably not come to this show. Speaking of the mentalist program, it was absolutely freaky how he could come up with answers there was no way he could know! And according to Sally also, the Cheerleaders dominated the shopping cart jousting event yesterday. Imagine that, Cheerleaders being good at a shopping related event! Congratulations to April Chandler Caraway for winning the Ipod in the Bookstore Student Appreciation drawing last Friday, (on her birthday no less,) and to Michael Gipson who won the Hoodie, which I don't think he's picked up yet, so if you see him, you might let him know he was the lucky winner of this item. Be sure and check out the newest edition of the Statesman. There's a great article about our PAWS organization in it. And if it inspires any of you to want to join or just help out, or maybe adopt a dog, please let one of us know. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the grill will be closed the rest of the week. We have people out and the rest of us are covering where we can, but it just leaves us too short handed to manage the grill too. We're sorry, we know you love it, but please be patient, we'll open it back up as soon as possible. Our menu for today includes: Ribs Chicken strips Steamed red potatoes Baked beans Baked potatoes Corn on the cob Catalina blend vegetables Hot rolls And for dessert, have some delicious Apricot Cobbler. Nov. 4 No Grill This Week Message-ID: <4AF1A56E.1020203@eosc.edu> Hi folks, We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful week for Homecoming. I'm glad we got all that rain out of the way ahead of time, to give us this absolutely gorgeous week for all our Homecoming activities! Today's 4:00 activity will be a frozen T-shirt contest at the Clock Tower. I've seen this done at the Relay for Life, and it is hysterical, with each team trying to thaw out a frozen wet T-shirt and get it on before the other teams. The participants in this will be really glad for the warmer weather! And the 7:00 event, which will be held in the Ballroom, is called the Think Fast Game Show. Sounds like there could be some brain work involved in this portion of the Homecoming activities! I thought I was going to wind up participating in yesterday's Bubble Trouble event, when I was coming from the Library building back to the Student Center. I made sure to watch where the contestants were rolling those giant inflatable "hamster balls" to, so that I wouldn't wind up becoming a speed bump on their way to victory. It was kinda like with new drivers: just stay off the sidewalk and you'll be fine. And the Mr. Eastern contest was full of surprises last night with more drama and plot twists than the soap opera network! I believe it was the Aggie club entry who claimed the title of Mr. Eastern after a very interesting competition. Today is another Biggest Loser weigh in day. Go check your progress and make corrections if your numbers are not heading in the right direction. Remember there's a first and a second place prize this time, so even if you're not in first place, you could still come up winning some bucks. Not to mention the fact that it feels so good to know you've lost some weight, and done something positive for your health. Happy Birthday wishes go out to Nursing instructor, Viki Vogt, and Cafeteria employee Mary Burt. I hope they both have a wonderful day. Due to illness, we are short-handed this week and will not be opening the Grill. Please be patient, we will reopen it as soon as we can. Mr. Sam Sibert, retired National Basketball Association athlete, and now the founder and CEO of a major utility construction corporation will become the 26th inductee since the program's inception in 1988. As if that's not impressive enough, he will be introduced at tonight's festivities by Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Tom Colbert, and Marcus Haynes of the Harlem Globetrotters. Yesterday's scheduled Bathtub Races were scrubbed (pun intended), due to mechanical problems (translation: stuff broke). I haven't heard how the Scavenger Hunt went, but as far as I know everyone is accounted for. Float building has been scheduled for 9:00 p.m. every evening this week, so I'm betting we'll have some pretty impressive entries in tomorrow's 10:00 a.m. Homecoming Parade. Be sure and make plans to be there and see them all. And after that at 11:30 we'll be having a big Tailgate Party in front of the Student Center to get everyone in the spirit for the Homecoming Games at 1:30 and 3:30 when our Mountaineers and Lady Mountaineers take on Redlands. And here's a heads up in advance so you can get the word out at local churches. There will be a Contemporary Christian Concert at the Presbyterian Church next Sat. Nov. 14 at 7:00 featuring some wonderful spirit filled and talented musicians and singers. Be sure and spread the word at church this Sunday so people can make plans to attend this uplifting event sponsored by your Latimer County Arts Council. Admission is $10, and as always, delectable refreshments will be provided. Speaking of the Arts Council, today is Arts Council President Ruth Brelsford's birthday, so if you see her, be sure to give her a hug and wish her a terrific birthday! Also celebrating a birthday this weekend is Pres. Smith's right hand gal and Board of Regents' secretary, Marci O'Donley. Have a good one, Marci. And if you know of any retired Eastern workers, remind them of our Hilltoppers Breakfast at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning in the President's Dining Room. They can come reminisce with old friends, check out our new building and get a wonderful breakfast! rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I had started feeling sneezy and sniffly Friday evening, and had strong suspicions that something was about to hit me. Boy, was I right! By Friday night I could tell I'd come in direct contact with some kind of germ or another that I didn't want anything to do with, but it was too late to do all those sanitizing, germ killing avoidance manuevers, and evidently my extra Vitamin C and Echinacea didn't do the trick. I'd already been bit! By Saturday morning I was so stuffy I couldn't stand it. I finally got in to see a doctor yesterday, and after a shot and a couple of prescriptions, I woke up feeling much better this morning. Til I got to work and started getting sniffly and sneezy again. (Do you think maybe I'm just allergic to work? Hmmmm.) Looks like I got back just in time to wish a Happy Birthday to Business Division Instructor and Chair, Kay Langham. I hope she has a great birthday, even if she is probably spending it at work. Local librarian Shirley Bambeck, has announced an appearance by classical guitarist Peter Fletcher, tomorrow evening at 7:00 at the Latimer County Public Library to present a wonderful guitar performance that is FREE and open to the public! Fletcher, who began studying guitar at the age of 7 under classical guitar instructor John Sutherland, has performed at Carnegie Hall numerous times, and promises to serenade the ear with various melodies happening at the same time creating the aural illusion of two instruments. This is a wonderful opportunity for the general public and especially for music lovers to come and be swept away for an evening at your local library! And another musical opportunity is coming up this weekend, with a Christian Contemporary Concert being held at the Presbyterian Church Saturday evening at 7:00. The concert, sponsored by your Latimer County Arts Council, will feature various artists performing some wonderful, uplifting Christian Contemporary pieces. Admission is $10 and wonderful refreshments will be served. Come help support these artists, your Arts Council, and enjoy the music, the company and the refreshments! Grill fans will be happy today, as we will have the Grill in operation again! Nov. 12 Message-ID: <4AFC3085.9000704@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I just checked my calendar and found it hard to believe that we're so close to Thanksgiving break and then end of semester finals and Christmas, etc. Wow! Time really does fly! I don't know what I'd do without that calendar on my computer to remind me of things, especially when we get into the end of the year "schedule changes". Anyone who's responsible for turning in bi-weekly time sheets needs to remember that they're due next Monday, not the usual Wednesday. Of course, we don't gripe if our paycheck comes early, though! Don't forget about classical guitarist Peter Fletcher's scheduled performance at the Public Library this evening at 7:00. It's open to the public, free, and will be a wonderful way to spend some time this evening. And here's a heads up for next week. Next Wednesday, Nov. 18th, we'll be serving the traditional Thanksgiving meal for lunch in the Cafeteria, so mark your calendars so you don't miss it! Also, Ali Martinez, Bookstore Manager, wanted me to let everyone know that they have "Kootie Killer" available in the bookstore to kill most of those germs out there floating around. I had to go see this for myself, and what they have is little portable tubes of fruit scented hand sanitizer on display at the register that will clip onto your belt loop, key chain, back pack, or whatever and be there handy for those situations when you feel the need to kill some germs immediately. There's a lot of stuff going around, and this could possibly save you days of misery and recuperation, not to mention missing classes and assignments having to be made up, missing income, and missing fun! And for you Grill fans who are still having unsatisfied cravings from last week, our Grill will be open again today! Most all of our crew is back on the job now and things are getting back into our regular routine. (Obviously, we didn't find out about the "Kootie Killer" fast enough or we might not have had so many people out!) And Doug Sims in our Post Office ought to really think it's great since it's his birthday! And I saw him hard at work earlier, so I know he didn't let that old superstition keep him from getting out of bed and coming in to do his duty. You know the old saying, neither rain, nor snow, nor gloom of night, nor Friday the 13th falling on your birthday will stop the postman from making his appointed rounds. Hope you have a great one, Dougo! And following hot on the heels of Doug's birthday, Mimi Kelley, Financial Aid Director of our McAlester campus will be celebrating her big day tomorrow. Hope she has a great one too! Saturday evening, if you want to get out of your rut, and support a good cause or two, there will be a Contemporary Christian Concert at the Presbyterian Church here in Wilburton at 7:00. This is a fundraiser for the Latimer County Arts Council to support our efforts to bring a variety of educational and entertaining programs to our area schools. So if you're a fan of contemporary Christian music, bring your family and friends, and your church family and enjoy the wonderful music and refreshments. Admission is $10. Or if you're a Hank Sr. fan, there will be a tribute performance of his music by City Moon with special guest star Ramona Reed at the WHS Auditorium at 7:30, to raise money for the Pick a Star program. Tickets for this performance are $15. And Sunday there will be a benefit Thanksgiving dinner for Debbie Taylor at the Masonic Lodge next to the Wilburton Elementary School starting at 11:30 and serving up turkey and dressing for whatever donation you can give to help with her medical expenses. Our menu for today includes: Hot wings BBQ on a bun Loaded baked potato Corn on the cob Baked beans French fries Chicken and sausage gumbo soup And for dessert, have some Banana Pudding or a Rice Krispie Treat. Nov. 16 Message-ID: <4B0174D8.5070607@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope everyone came prepared for chilly weather and possibly some more rain today. I was glad to be indoors last night when it was really coming down. It's time to be fixing up warm, dry places for any pets (and plants) you just can't bring indoors for the winter. Larger dogs will do okay outside with shelter and some warm bedding, but if you have smaller dogs, they don't have the body mass to stand up to the cold weather, and definitely need to be indoors when it gets so cold and wet. (They make great foot warmers!) Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Susie Smith, who has temporarily caught up with me, and to our great state of Oklahoma who's older than both of us put together! Don't forget our Thanksgiving dinner is coming up this Wednesday, then just a couple more days and we'll be off for Thanksgiving break! I don't know anyone who's not looking forward to that! Just try not to eat too much, especially if you're in the Biggest Loser contest. It'll be over in just a few weeks and you don't want to lose all the headway you've made already on a Thanksgiving binge. Our menu for today includes: Chicken and dumplings (Great for a chilly day like today!) Hot link on a bun French fries Loaded baked potatoes Broccoli cuts Succotash And for dessert, have a piece of Fruit Cocktail Cake. Have a great day! I felt sorry for those poor FFA girls running around yesterday afternoon in skirts in that cold wind! Evidently that's the dress code for their contest, but I bet if they tried putting the boys in those things, that rule would change PDQ! (They ought to think about instituting a bad weather clause.) Happy Birthday wishes go out today to EOSC Recruiter Karen Darby of our Wilburton campus, and her twin sister Kelly Bogard, Executive Assistant to the Director of our McAlester campus. I bet these two will have some kind of party planned! Enjoy yourselves! Don't forget tomorrow is our Thanksgiving meal in the Cafeteria at lunch, so come ready for some great grub! And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but due to several of our crew being out sick again (different ones this time, we're trading off), the Grill will be closed today. We hope to have it back in operation sometime this week, but we'll have to wait and see if we can get a full crew back well. Here's hoping that we'll all have enough days off (and good food) next week to rest and recover from our ailments. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Green beans Carrots Chicken strips French fries Hot rolls And for dessert, have some Ice Cream and Toppings. That's way too close to freezing for me. And the clouds look like they're finally breaking up. Maybe it won't rain today after all, as I have to go to the PAWS pens this evening and clean and when it's rained recently, the mud is horrible out there. I always say we have two seasons out there: muddy season and dusty season. And they alternate rapidly and without much notice. And neither one is that much fun. But the dogs are always happy to see anyone who goes out there to clean, to feed them or just to look at them and pet them. They love attention! And they'd love to be adopted, so if you or someone you know is ready to give one a good home, let us know! If you're ready to have a mood lifting experience, Theatre Eastern will be presenting a comedy entitled "Christmas Belles" Thurs. and Fri. evenings at 7:30 in Mitchell Auditorium, or if you can't make the evening performances, there will be a final dress rehearsal tomorrow at 1:30 for your enjoyment. Performances are free to Eastern students, faculty and staff, and the public may attend for only $3 or 3 donated food items to be distributed to needy families this holiday season. (Just one of the ways we at Eastern try to give back to the community.) Tomorrow, here in the Cafeteria, there will be a Silent Auction Bake Sale to help Chandler (April) Caraway raise money to go on the European tour to England, Ireland and Wales with the Photography Club next Spring Break. There should be a variety of wonderful goodies to bid on and a very happy woman making the plans of a lifetime with your help. Please come over and buy some goodies, or just make a donation to help her achieve her dream. Our Thanksgiving menu for today includes: Ham Turkey Dressing Mashed potatoes Gravy Corn Sweet peas Hot rolls Sweet potato casserole And we have an assortment of pies to choose from for dessert. I guess it is getting to be that time of year after all. After tomorrow we can all breathe a sigh of relief and relax for a few days, until all the mad holiday cooking begins anyway. Don't forget to come check out the items in Chandler's Silent Auction here in the Cafeteria today. So far there's an Italian Cream Cake, a red velvet cake, homemade wild plum jelly, M & M cookies, no bake cookies, Reese's cup fudge, pumpkin fudge, banana nut muffins and lemon poppyseed muffins, all donated to help Chandler raise money to go on the Photography Club trip to England, Ireland and Wales next spring break, so come on over and bid generously. I didn't want to get up, then once I was up and around and ready to leave, I found out my car was seriously frosted over! (This may have been happening before during the week off, but I had not been getting up early enough to care!) And my windshield wipers were frozen stuck! The silly thing has a button you can push to heat little wires in the back glass and warm up the side view mirrors so they'll thaw, but they didn't think that would be a handy feature in the windshield for some reason. There you're on your own with just defrost blowing cold air for the first several minutes. Oh well, enough of my grousing. I did have a great week off, with plenty to eat, (probably way more than I should've had, and here I was worried I'd starve being out of the Cafeteria for a week!) I hope everyone else had a great Thanksgiving break, and all the fun they could stand! Well, once again, we've got people out sick, so the Grill will be closed today. We'll be back in operation with it as soon as we have enough crew here to man all the stations. Just be glad that all our sick people are doing the right thing and staying at home and not coming here to share their germs with everyone else and pray they all get well soon.
