From rwatkins at eosc.edu Thu Oct 1 10:08:02 2009 From: rwatkins at eosc.edu (Rhoda Watkins) Date: Thu, 01 Oct 2009 10:08:02 -0500 Subject: [Eoscstudents] Menu for Thurs. Oct. 1 Message-ID: <4AC4C5D2.8030100@eosc.edu> Happy October everyone, Hard to believe it's October already, but looking out the window to the north, the threatening sky makes it look like winter. Of course, the still green trees waving in the growing breeze show that to be false. It's another busy day on campus with two more performances of The Princess and the Pea today at 10:00 and 12:30, and the Fall Concert this evening at 7:00. And I think a lot of people are still recoving from the dance last night and Midnight Madness. The Horticulture Plant Sale will be running from 1:00 to 4:00 today at the EOSC Greenhouse, and they'll take their show on the road tomorrow downtown to the Pitstop, there by the stoplight across from McDonald's. They will have pansies, violas and flowering kale available for purchase to spruce up your yard for the fall and winter months. Kiamichi Electric will be holding its annual meeting this Saturday morning in our gymnasium. KEC members can come and eat free hotdogs, enjoy free entertainment, and maybe win a great door prize if you're lucky. And last but not least, our local PAWS group will be participating in a giant two day adoptathon at PetSense in McAlester this Saturday and Sunday, so if you've been thinking about getting a new pet, be sure and come by one of those days and see all the wonderful adoptable animals who need homes badly before winter. A good dog or cat is worth their weight in nerve pills, takes the place of a burglar alarm and a garbage disposal, and you never need to sweep up crumbs or hunt up a blanket to warm your feet when you have a dog in the house. Lots of wonderful pets are out there just waiting to become part of your family! Our menu for today includes: Stuffed peppers (good stuff!) Scalloped potatoes Pinto beans Cornbread Corn Brussels sprouts Hot rolls Chicken nuggets French fries BBQ sandwiches And for dessert have some Peach Cobbler or Bread Pudding. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... (I think sometimes it's in my office, too! Most of the time I'd like to donate some poor needy soul part of the air conditioning that gets pumped in here. I'm almost looking forward to hot flashes!) Today's your last chance to see The Princess and the Pea performed here at Eastern. There will be one performance at 10:00 and an evening performance at 7:00 today, so take an hour or so to come and see this wonderful performance. The Horticulture Sale is down on Main Street by the Pitstop today. I hope they don't get frosted on! But I believe the plants they are offering, (if not the student workers) are cold tolerant. I know the flowering kale and pansies are. (Don't know why they call someone who's wimpy a "pansy". Those cute little flowers can take the cold better than I can!) Don't forget if you're in McAlester this weekend to stop by PetSense and find a new pet to love. Our PAWS group, (along with several other groups), will be up there both days rather than in Roy's parking lot this weekend. (It's a good thing too, since this is the weekend of his big anniversary sale and we'd probably be run over as crazy busy as it gets there for this sale!) Our menu for today includes: Chicken enchiladas Refried beans Spanish rice Green beans Fish sandwich French fries And for dessert have a helping of wonderful Banana Pudding. Oct. 5 Message-ID: <4ACA05B5.6020107@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you had a great weekend too. Mine was quite enjoyable. The weather was much better on Saturday, and I got a lot of running around done locally, but Sunday I went with some of our PAWS members to PetSense in McAlester for their Adoption Event and had a great time visiting with both our members and other pet lovers and hearing their stories of pets they had rescued and loved dearly. Since we were indoors for this day, the weather didn't bother us too much. Chances of rain and scattered thunderstorms are predicted for the next several days, so be prepared for that. It's getting to be that time of year, I guess. While I was driving the other day, I drove through fall leaves coming down like snowflakes as the breeze picked up and caught them, sending them scattering across the highway. We have a great menu for you today featuring: Chicken a la King on a biscuit Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Monterrey blend vegetables Baked potatoes Chili dogs Chili cheese nachos And for dessert have a hunk of yummy Chocolate Cake. Oct. 6 Message-ID: <4ACB59AB.4000705@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow, if this keeps up, some of us are going to have to start coming to work by boat! I passed by lots of ditches this morning that were overflowing and not far from running onto the highway. They always say rainy weather is good sleeping weather and I believe it, because I slept soundly all night long, and didn't even know for sure it was raining til I poked my head out this morning, but it has evidently been at it quite a while for there to be this much water standing all over. Looking at the forecast, we'd best be prepared for more to come, too. I want to remind the students that if you have a schedule that prevents you from being able to make it to the Cafeteria by the 1:15 closing time some days, we will work with you to see that you get to eat. Just bring a copy of your schedule so that we can verify that your schedule is causing a conflict and we will see to it that you get to eat on those overbooked days. You can order off the Grill and pay with your meal ticket or if there's some of the main line lunch left and you'd rather have that just ask. We're here to serve you. We got the official notice at our house the other day that our address has changed. That's something I never thought would happen, since I didn't move and never intend to move. (It's too big a pain!) I was all for us getting the 9-1-1 emergency system, but didn't realize it would literally hit me where I live, causing all my address labels, checks, and various forms of ID to become incorrect. I just figured if the emergency people were smart enough to take care of every emergency they were smart enough to figure out where your house was once you gave them your address. Evidently though, everything has to be changed to a totally numerical system, which may help emergency personnel, but it's going to confuse the heck out of me, and I suspect a whole lot of other folks who have lived around here for years and know streets and roads by their real names. The really bad part is, I know if I have an actual life and death emergency, I'm gonna be on that phone screaming for them to get to my old "real" address I've had all these years at the top of my lungs, and any part of that long numbered thing they've stuck me with will be the last thing on my mind. (I'd probably come about as close to being able to give them my GPS coordinates, and I don't have a clue what those are.) I hope they know how to cross-reference their maps. Wish all us old-timers luck with this newfangled system! It feels like when they tried to switch us all to the metric system! Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Winter blend vegetables Hot rolls Chicken strips French fries And for dessert, have some Peach Cobbler or Chocolate Cake. Keep dry, Rhoda :-) P. S. Don't forget about our coffee, cappuccino and regular and sugar-free Hot Chocolate to take the chill off on these wet and chilly days to come. rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I hope everyone's working on their acts for the Eastern's Got Talent talent show coming up next Monday. Then I realized that we only have one more day to put in here and then I can shut that old alarm clock off for a few days. That thing sure is annoying when you're sleeping really good and it starts nagging at you. And most of the time, I have to BE the alarm clock for my daughter, since she can sleep right through whatever goes off to wake her up with no problem at all, or sometimes, in her sleep, reach out and turn off her phone or clock or whatever, and keep right on snoozing. But I didn't have to worry about that this morning, since she was out of school. And we will be too, tomorrow! Hang in there! Happy birthday wishes go out today to Mr. Les Brelsford, Circuit Rider for the Oklahoma Arts Council, and for tomorrow to Mr. Keith Lewis, our Multi-Media Communications Manager (guy we call for technical stuff). They're both great and I hope they both have a great birthday. (And they both have great wives who work here on campus, too!) And this Saturday, another one of our "technical guys", Mr. Jeff Weems, will be celebrating his birthday, and Cafeteria worker, Amberly Sullivan will celebrate her 20th. I hope they have a wonderful day, also. We had quite a crowd of FCCLA students and their sponsors on campus yesterday, keeping me very busy at the register. Evidently they had a very enjoyable program in our auditorium. (Destiny even won one of the door prizes, a combination cork/white board, which she already has up in her room.) Our menu for today includes: Lasagna Garlic bread Green beans Capri blend vegetables Chicken fajitas Spanish rice Refried beans Loaded baked potatoes And our dessert for today is Boston Cream Pie (really this time.) Maybe we'll have some beautiful foliage to enjoy soon. I always love this time of year, when it finally gets cool enough to enjoy being outdoors without those annoying ticks, chiggers, etc. (Of course, in the woods this time of year, you have to worry about getting blasted by those annoying deer hunters which would be way worse than ticks, chiggers, mosquitos and poison ivy all rolled into one! Watch out!) We took the downtown shuttle out to the Fall Festival for the first time, and it really took a lot less time than it takes for me to drive out there and find a parking spot way out in the south 40, then have to stand in line waiting on a tram, to get to where the booths are, (plus I saved my gas!) Our menu for today includes: Baked ham Tacos Nachos Scalloped potatoes Green beans Baby carrots Baked potato bar Broccoli cheese soup Hot rolls And for dessert, have a helping of Mandarin Orange Upside Down Cake. Message-ID: <002c01ca50d2$21806fa0$64814ee0$@edu> With the constant fear of H1N1 symptoms, the following measures can be practiced by one and all. This is information which is from a Consultant General Surgeon & Gastroenterologist based in India and could be beneficial to students and their families alike. Tamiflu does not kill but prevents H1N1 from further proliferation till the virus limits itself in about 1-2 weeks (its natural cycle). H1N1, like other Influenza A viruses, only infects the upper respiratory tract and proliferates (only) there. The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/ throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is. While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps - not fully highlighted in most official communications - can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu): 1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications). 2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap). 3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method. 4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population. 5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc/bioflavonoids to boost absorption. 6. Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm. All these are simple ways to prevent, within means of most households, and certainly much less painful than to wait in long queues outside public hospitals. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I don't see a single umbrella, or any of those new wild looking rubber boots all the girls have come up with. Maybe some of the mud will have a chance to dry out before we get drenched again, which looking at the Weather Channel program on my computer, looks like it might take place tomorrow. (It shows there's a 60% chance anyway.) Of course that would be on the day I go clean the PAWS pens. What a mess that can be when it's rained! If anyone ever runs across me looking like I've been rolled in the mud somewhere, odds are that's where I've come from. Don't forget to get up to the Ballroom for the Benefits Fair today, or at least sometime this week, to check out the various options available to you, and talk to the experts to make sure you're making the best choices for your insurance needs. This is a Psycho Club fundraiser, so come and place your bids and help support this wonderful campus organization. Also, today is your last chance to get your mug in the next Mountaineer Yearbook! I finally tried one of our Steak Melt Sandwiches off the grill yesterday, and I have to say, they are really good. I'm not that much of a meat eater, and I definitely had Susie hold the jalapeno ranch dressing they put on them, but I substituted regular ranch dressing for it and it was really tasty, and just about more than I could eat. I've been saying ever since we started having them, and I started smelling them, that I was going to get around to doing that "one of these days", so I finally decided that yesterday was that day. Now when someone asks me how the steak melt is, I can tell them honestly, "They're great!" Happy Birthday wishes go out for tomorrow to Student Support Services worker, Sue Lovett. Most everyone is pretty well bundled up, but sure enough, when I walked over to the Business Office a while ago, there went a guy in shorts and flip flops. I don't know if some people are just abnormally warm blooded (in which case I could use a transfusion), or if they just don't think to look outside before they get ready in the morning and by then just figure it's not worth it to turn around and change clothes. I think shorts and flip flop weather is about over for this year. Oct. 27 Message-ID: <4AE70379.1030209@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we've still got plenty of cloud cover, but it looks like the rain has moved out of the area for at least a while. Don't get too used to it though, I hear it's supposed to be back Thursday. It's just giving us a one day reprieve I guess, to remember what a nice dry, fall day is like, (if you don't think about the mud.) This weather has given us some beautiful fall color in spots though, especially some of the trees in front of and to the west side of the new building. There are a couple of seriously scary events you need to plan on attending this weekend, maybe before or after you do the Carnival here on campus Saturday evening. One is the Haunted Dorm in Salmon Hall sponsored by our Baseball Team, and the other is the Haunted Hayride in Robber's Cave State Park. Both promise to be great fun for those who like to be scared out of their skin. Our menu for today includes: Pot roast Baked potato bar Corn Baked beans Vegetable blend Mashed potatoes and gravy Meat and cheese nachos Vegetable soup (Love It!) And for dessert, have a helping of luscious Apple Cobbler. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Try again Message-ID: <4AE70B83.2010009@eosc.edu> Hi again folks, I just learned that my menu for today was somewhat garbled, (and I already knew I needed new glasses!) Sorry, but we are not having Pot Roast. We ARE having Pot Roast Vegetable Soup. And we are having Ribs, (which was written in a wet spot so that it didn't show up very well at all on the paper I was copying the menu off of earlier). Hopefully this won't cause too much disappointment, and I'll try to read a little closer and maybe ask a few more questions in the future. Thanks for your patience, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... That's been such a common occurrence lately, that it seems odd when it doesn't happen. But the blue sky is sure nice to see for a day or so before the next storm front rolls in about this evening or tomorrow. Don't lose your rubber boots just yet! Another Biggest Loser weigh-in is today. Just 6 weeks left to shed those unwanted pounds and win this thing! Not a long time, but not without obstacles either, with Halloween candy and later all that wonderful Thanksgiving home cooking coming up between you and your goal. Just remember, moderation is the key. Don't deprive yourself to the extent that you can't stand it and go off on an eating binge and ruin all your previous efforts. Our menu for today includes: Brisket Scalloped potatoes Broccoli and cheese Green beans Hot rolls Pizza Broccoli and cheese soup And for dessert, have a piece of yummy Cheesecake! Oct. 29 Message-ID: <4AE9AEB8.7010907@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Better batten down the hatches! It looks like it could get really nasty out there before it's over with. And according to the weather forecast on TV this morning, there's only a 100% chance of rain today. And now the weather program on my computer just popped up saying we're under a tornado watch until noon. Shoulda stayed in bed, huh? We've got our weather radio turned on but we're still really not sure if it will pick up anything in this building with so much metal, so if anyone hears about any scary weather headed this way, please call and let us know. As of this coming Monday, my daughter Destiny, will be an official "Would you like fries with that?" McDonald's employee. She's thrilled to have her first job, and will really enjoy getting a paycheck. And also as of Monday, my husband will be starting truck driving school, so I won't have anyone to drag along with me to all the fun Homecoming events that I want to come to! We've had literally hundreds of extra guests on campus lately, enjoying our new facility, like the FCCLA group, (and we just received a lovely note from Mrs. Smith's group thanking us for our service and food during their trip), the big College Fair group, and yesterday the Skills USA group in their red jackets. It's always good to get to show off what Eastern has to offer and make a good impression on all these potential students and their sponsors. Here's the rundown of some of it: Today is Student Appreciation Day in the EOSC Bookstore. All students need to go in and register for a drawing to win a free Hoodie or an MP3 player/radio/recorder. (Dang it, wish I was a student, I wouldn't mind having one of those myself!) They'll also be serving free punch and cookies while you shop. Today is Robert Tackett's last day with us. He's been our fleet mechanic since hiring on and he's been doing a great job. He's also been willing to help us on the Staff Council, and will be missed in that capacity, too. (That said, this will leave us an opening needing filled on the Council, so if anyone is interested in serving in this group, please let one of the members know.) Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Julie Moss who does mysterious technical things upstairs in the Library Building for a living and tries to keep Alan in line in her spare time, (good luck with that!), Leon Hanebrink who keeps the farm running smoothly, and Jerrod Toney, our KEDDO worker here in the Cafeteria. And on Sunday, PaulaOgden , Miller Hall custodian will celebrate a birthday as well. Tomorrow evening EOSC will host the big Halloween Carnival, open to not just our students, but the public as well, with lots of games and activities going on, a custume contest, food, drinks and fun galore. THE CAFETERIA WILL BE CLOSED TOMORROW EVENING SO THAT EVERYONE CAN ATTEND THE CARNIVAL. We will serve brunch at the regular time of 11:00 to 1:00, but will close afterward. We will be open our regular weekend hours on Sunday. Don't forget to set your clocks back this weekend, and get that extra hour of sleep Saturday night. (I felt like I could've used it this morning!) Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Pita bread Spanish rice Fish French fries Pinto beans Cornbread And for dessert have a Brownie! (I've been smelling them for a while and they smell yummy!)
