Happy September everyone,

Amazingly, it even feels like Fall already.  And I think it's only 
supposed to get into the low 80s today, so it should be a really nice 
day.  Chances of rain, while only about 20% today,  are picking up 
during the coming week though, so be ready for that.

The "Counselors Only Fair" is going on upstairs today and I've heard 
several favorable comments about our new building.  I did hear one 
fellow say he missed the old building, but I know sarcasm when I hear 
it, (I even use it on occasion.)

Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Trisha White of the Business 
Office.  And I'm pretty sure that since she and London have different 
birthdays, that proves they're not twins.

Our menu for today includes:
          Indian tacos
          Beans
          Mexican rice
          Pizza
          Chicken nuggets
         
And for dessert have some Peach Cobbler or Strawberry Cobbler.

Hi folks,

I wasn't ready for the rain this morning, and our little schnauzer, 
Lady, wasn't ready for the thunder and lightning.  I woke up with her 
shivering on the pillow next to me and had to comfort her til she calmed 
down.  Funny how some pets are really afraid of storms for whatever 
reason, while some of them just seem not to even notice.  The rain also 
caused a neighborhood mother cat to move her kittens under my car, so I 
had to back out inches at a time this morning til I managed to get them 
to seek shelter elsewhere.  They wouldn't come to me so I could take 
them and put them somewhere safe, so they'll just have to make do on 
their own til I can get them more used to me.  Precious, the one that 
likes me was curled up in the house with Ginger, all warm, dry and fed.  
With rain and cooler weather, we need to watch for pets who do take 
shelter under our vehicles either to keep dry or get warm, and be 
careful as we rush to go to work in the mornings not to run over any of 
them.

Our menu for today includes:
          Chicken a la King
          Baked potato bar
          Green beans
          California blend vegetables
          Tacos
          French fries
          Chicken strips

And for dessert, have some scrumptious Chocolate Cake.

Don't forget our Grill is open from 11:00 to 3:30 Mon. - Thurs., and 
11:00 to 2:00 on Fri.  We fix some great hamburgers, cheeseburgers, 
grilled chicken sandwiches, patty melts, steak melts, grilled cheese, 
and bacon hamburgers or cheeseburgers, served with fries, chips or a 
small salad, drink and dessert.  This is available to students with meal 
plans or punch cards from 11:00 to 1:15, or available for $5.00 cash to 
anyone from 11:00 to 3:30, or 2:00 on Fri.

Hi folks,

The morning's rainstorm once again had the kittens under my car and the 
schnauzer shaking, but I managed to get all that taken care of without 
any major breakdowns.  I grabbed up the 2 little kittens that were under 
my car and put them in a dry box that we use for the cats to sleep in.  
I don't know where the little black one has gotten off to, but I hope it 
finds someplace dry to get in.  I know I'm certainly glad to be indoors 
looking out on days like this. 

Mildred, head of our Cafeteria,  is now officially on vacation until the 
14th, so anything you need from the Cafeteria from now til the 14th will 
need to go through either Linda Almy, Mildred's assistant supervisor, or 
myself, as we've sworn not to disturb her for anything short of a major 
disaster, and we've all voted not to have any of those.  She is to be 
allowed to have this post-traumatic breakdown time to recover from 
moving from one building to another, equipment changes, staff changes, 
fish frys, board meetings, and open house festivities without 
interruption, so that she can gather her wits, and come back rested and 
at the top of her game as usual.  (Boy, that sounds good, doesn't it?  
Now everyone will be wanting a vacation!)

I know I sent out a separate email pertaining to this, but just ot 
remind everyone, the Cafeteria will be open for Brunch and Dinner ONLY 
on Mon.,  Sept. 7, Labor Day.  Then it's business as usual again on Tues.

Our menu for today includes:
            Swedish meatballs
            Rice
            Vegetable blend
            Blackeye peas
            Baked potato bar
            French fries
            Chicken strips
             Pizza
            Hot rolls
            (And don't forget the Grill option!)

Hi folks,

I know it's been less than a month since classes have started back, but 
isn't it nice to have an extra day off to look forward to?  I'm sure a 
lot of you will be attending the annual Choctaw Labor Day Festival at 
Tuskahoma.  That's always a fun time, with good food, great FREE 
entertainment, plenty of FREE rides, carnival attractions to test your 
skill, and arts and crafts booths to browse through and shop in.  EOSC's 
Anne Hester, our nursing grant coordinator, will be stationed in the 
Health Tent for a good part of the weekend, so stop by and see her, and 
pick up some free goodies and info on a great career in the nursing 
profession that can start right here at Eastern.  And the weather is 
expected to be several degrees lower than the blistering hot 
temperatures we usually have at this time of year.  (Of course, that 
could be because it might be raining, too.)

Boy, we can tell Baseball and Softball season has kicked into high 
gear.  We've been getting lots of orders for sack lunches from the 
teams.  I always thought that when it rained games were cancelled, but 
they've found a way around that.  They just go where the sun is shining 
to play!  That's one way to do it, huh? 

And don't forget, Mildred is on vacation, so if you have Cafeteria 
needs, please call Ext. 712, and Linda Almy or myself will take care of 
you .

Our lunch menu for today includes:
          Fish
          Scalloped potatoes
          Field peas
          Green beans
          Cornbread
          BBQ wieners
          French fries
          Chicken strips

take it easy on him today.  He's not as young as he was yesterday.

Biggest Loser had another weigh-in yesterday and it looks like there's a 
good number of participants off and losing once again.  Keep your eyes 
on the prize; that's your health and fitness as well as the money!

The Staff Council will be hosting a Jewelry Sale next Monday in the 
President's Dining Room, so come and browse.  It's not too early to be 
gathering up stocking stuffers you know!

Hi folks,

It's looking like a somewhat cloudy day, predicted to be followed by 
several more cloudy, or even rainy ones.  Great for indoor activities, 
or pulling weeds while they're loosened, and maybe before some of them 
pour more pollen into the air and make everyone even more sneezy and 
miserable.  It's not just people all that pollen affects either.  We 
have a chihuahua who's been sneezing like crazy for days now.   

This weekend is the annual Latimer County Free Fair in the 
Goddard/Collins Building across the highway from campus, so be sure and 
get over there this evening or tomorrow morning and see all the 
beautiful, useful and tasty items that local people have made or grown 
and entered to show off their skills.  I always marvel at the wonderful 
things that are entered by young and old alike.  Our area 4H groups can 
always be counted on to have some very interesting exhibits entered.  
There's even a pet show scheduled for 6:00 this evening in the show area 
of the building.  And if you're hungry when you get there, there's 
generally something good in the concession stand.  (Lots of times 
they'll have homemade goodies for sale that are absolutely delicious!)  
And don't forget to check out the livestock  all groomed and pampered.  
You'll never see a sheep, cow or pig in a field looking that good!

The Grill will be closing at 1:00 today and will reopen Monday at 11:00, 
so try to get here early if you're wanting something from our grill.

Also, we have no more waffles today.   We should be back up and running 
with those next week, maybe Tuesday or so.

             Fried shrimp
             Green beans
             Corn
             Mixed vegetables
             Cornbread
             French fries
             BBQ Little Smokies

And for dessert, have some Ice Cream and Toppings.

Hi folks,

Wow, what a wet weekend we had!  That's 2 years in a  row that our 
family reunion has required umbrellas!  It was really nice though to get 
to see some cousins I hadn't seen in years, even if we were all wet 
around the edges.  And it's looking like there are chances of rain 
predicted for the foreseeable future, so you might as well break down 
and get your rain gear out if you haven't  already, or maybe go to the 
Bookstore and buy a poncho or one of those cool EOSC umbrellas.

Don't forget about the big Jewelry Sale today in the President's Dining 
Room!  There are lots of purses and all manner of "BLING" to choose from 
for you or someone else.  It's a little off the beaten path, but 
definitely worth finding!  Just look for the big purple JEWELRY SALE 
sign n the Cafeteria, and you're almost there!  All the merchandise is 
provided by Cecil and Co. Crafts, with June (Kim Ott Pick's mom) manning 
the show, and a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the Staff 
Council, to help pay for the Employee Picnic, and other worthwhile 
things.  Your business will be greatly appreciated!

Also, you can get your bling today and wear it to have your mug shot 
between 9:00 and 3:00 tomorrow or Wednesday here in the Cafeteria for 
the next EOSC yearbook.  (Those of you in the witness protection program 
or featured on America's Most Wanted may want to skip this event.)  But 
seriously, come have your picture taken for the yearbook.  When you go 
on and do great things in the world, we want proof that you got your 
start at Eastern!  Or when you have kids who are at that age when they 
think their parents are SO STUPID, you can pull out the old yearbook and 
show them you really did get a college education!

she performs all these tasks in a very professional, and conscientious 
manner.  In spite of having such serious duties to take care of, she's a

Hi folks,

I hope none of you have floated away yet.  This rain has our shrubs 
sagging down over our walkway at the house, till I feel like I need a 
machete just to get to the car, and then a can of cat food to get the 
kittens out from under it who obviously don't have sense enough to come 
out of the rain, and think the car is the best place to hide from it.  
(Why they won't stay in their dry bed box, I don't understand.)  I'll be 
glad when this lets up some.  Has it been 40 days and nights yet?  
Remember the good old days when the weatherman kept talking about the 
drought?  I know it didn't seem good then, but it's starting to look 
better, the wetter everything gets.  It might be a good time to schedule 
another Mud Bowl, but I bet that's the only sport that can be played in 
it to do any good..

This is the last day for you procrastinators who put it off yesterday to 
get your picture taken for the Mountaineer yearbook.  Last call, rain or 
shine, bad hair day or not, this is it.  Come on in today between 9:00 
and 3:00 here in the Cafeteria right outside the President's Dining Room 
and say CHEESE!

Hi folks,

I can't believe I'm looking out and not seeing rain falling.  It seems 
we've been in the middle of monsoon season recently, so much so that it 
seems odd when it's not raining.  I kinda like it.  I know the frogs 
have been enjoying the rain though.   They were all over the highway 
last night, (along with one crazy raccoon that had developed a taste for 
frog legs.)  And last night I thought I heard one of our cats scratching 
on the side of the house wanting in, (not surprising), but when I looked 
out, I saw a couple of deer standing nearby instead.  Rainy as it's 
been, they probably wanted in too!

The Biggest Loser contest seems to be coming along well, with 32 
official participants this time, and several pounds being lost so far, 
(and a few put back on, but hey, there are days like that.)  Keep 
trying, there are still about 3 months til the fat lady sings.  And by 
then she could be quite a bit slimmer!

             Pizza
             Breadsticks

             Monterrey blend vegetables
            
And for dessert, make your sweet tooth happy with some of our Ice Cream

The first disbursement of the PELL Grant refunds has arrived in the Business
Office at the Wilburton campus. This will not be every student that has a
PELL grant, it is just the first disbursement. We will be printing checks
every Wednesday. You will not be able to pick them up until after 10:00 a.m.

If you are receiving a loan check the refund should be in our office 7-10
days after your disbursement date. The Business Office will send out an
e-mail when we get a disbursement of loans, OTAG, and OHLAP. Please be sure
to bring a student ID. We can also mail the check at your request to the
address on file. You will need to contact the Business Office to have the
check mailed to you at (918) 465-1831.

And Happy Gear Up Day!  I noticed in the Wilburton paper and on our web 
site that Mayor Brinlee had signed a proclamation naming today as Gear 
Up Day in Wilburton in honor of our great Gear Up group here on campus 
and all the hard work and PR they do for the college, and for area 
school children, in trying to get them "geared up" for college in a few 
years.  I don't know why today was the particular date picked for this, 
unless it has something to do with Linda Morgan's birthday being 
tomorrow, and this was as close as they could come during the work 
week.  I hope Linda has a great day, too, but as much of a character as 
she is, I know she will.

Hi folks,

Wasn't it a great weekend?  No rain at all that I know of!  Kind of gave 
us all a chance to dry out, but they're saying there's a pretty good 
chance of it returning in the next 2 or 3 days to bless us again.  I was 
really glad it didn't rain Saturday as we were having a PAWS adoption 
day and if it starts raining, we run for it.  (Dogs are wonderful, but 
the smell of wet dog usually isn't conducive to getting them new 
homes.)  We did pretty well with several smaller dogs we had up for 
adoption, but I've learned now that there are a couple of blue tick 
hounds and a couple of Great Pyrenees in the pound whose time is almost 
up, so if anyone is looking for a great big new companion, there's your 
opportunity.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Jane Harding of our Idabel campus on 
this last day of summer.   Maybe it won't rain on her big day.

We had a large turnout for the Choctaw Nation GED Graduation dinner 
Friday evening, and they all seemed very impressed with our new building 
and the wonderful food.  A big thank you goes out to Tim Talley, our 
campus policeman on duty that evening, for his assistance to one of our 
guests who got herself locked out of her car, along with her husband and 
several children.  I'm sure they were very relieved and grateful for his 
help.

If you are a participant in Student Support Services and are planning to 
graduate or transfer this semester, please fill out a graduate 
application.  For Eastern to continue being funded for the Student 
Support Services grant, there are certain objectives that we have to 
reach each year.   One of them is to graduate our participants with a 
degree and transfer them to 4 yr programs.  Even if you don't want to 
walk at graduation, you should apply for your degree.  This helps you 
and it helps us, too.  If you have the hours, look at it like this--you 
have worked for it, you deserve it!

In the past, we could count students who transfer without graduation, 
but the Reauthorization of the Higher Ed Act changed the objectives for 
graduation and transfer.  This time, we need your help.

Happy Fall,

Summer's last hoorah got kind of wild and woolly yesterday evening.  The 
rain wasn't so bad, but then the lightning, thunder and hail started and 
our little scared Schnauzer, Lady, was plastered to my side, shivering.  
I wasn't feeling too good about the weather myself.  My husband and I 
had been working outside before it got dark, trying to get the roof on a 
shed, and we only got part of the job done, so I'm guessing the shed 
only partly leaked.  We were just worried it would blow off completely 
if the wind picked up very much.  That sort of thing, and worse, has 
been known to happen here in beautiful, downtown "Tornado Alley".

For all you folks who are light on your feet, or would like to learn to 
be, Ballroom Dance classes start this evening here on campus in the 
North Ballroom, (how appropriate).  If you haven't pre-registered, grab 
your partner and come on down to sign up at 5:30 today.  Class will run 
from 6:00 to 8:00.  Call Barbara Gilbertson at 918-302-3642, or email 
her at bgilbertson at eosc.edu  for more information on this 8 week long 
course.

Subject: [Eoscstudents] Time is running out to travel to Europe......

The deadline to sign-up for and pay for the Eastern Photography Club 
trip to Europe will be here soon. If you are interested in traveling 
and/or joining the club fundraisers, you should consider doing that soon 
because the very last day to enroll and pay for the trip is December 3rd.

This year's trip during Spring Break will be 9 days and will include 
Ireland, Wales and England. The cost for the nearly all-inclusive trip 
is less than $2300 for students and slightly more than $2600 for adults 
ages 23 and over. That price includes round-trip air, all hotels, most 
meals, tours, transportation and etc.  Another thing to remember.....we 
will be in Ireland on St. Paddy's day!!!

Our next photo club meeting will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) in 
Mitchell Hall Room 109 (the Journalism classroom).

Hi folks,

Boy, the blue sky looks encouraging today.  Temperatures are going up 
some and chances of rain are down, and that all sounds like good news to 
me.  Sure beats the snow they've had in Denver and the flooding in 
Georgia.  They showed a picture of Six Flags Over Georgia on the news 
yesterday evening and the rollercoaster looked like a water ride!  The 
lower dips in it were totally underwater!  Wow, now that would be a 
thrill ride for sure!

You Biggest Loser contestants, don't forget to weigh in today.  Think 
light!  Eat lighter, exercise, and if you have a problem with too much 
eating in your spare time, find a constructive hobby that occupies your 
mind and your hands.  (Stitchery, woodworking, jigsaw puzzles, painting, 
gardening, find something that interesets you more than food.)  You 
can't be holding snacks if you're busy making or working with something, 
and you'll have something more to show for your time than a spare tire! 

Our menu for today includes:

It's looking like another nice day outside with only a very slight 
chance of rain in the forecast, and temperatures predicted to be in the

For you music lovers, there's a gospel singing in the Goldberg and 
Joseph Heritage Park this Saturday afternoon, brought to you by the 
Latimer County Arts Council, so come on down and enjoy.  Several very 
gifted performers will be featured.  Admission is free, and a concession 
stand is planned for the event.

Subject: [Eoscstudents] Homecoming is on its way!!!

Homecoming is little over a month away and our theme this year is 
Mountaineer Spirit.  Our community carnival is scheduled for Saturday 
October 31st from 4 pm to 7 pm and it is the first event of a week long 
schedule of events for homecoming.  
1. Community Carnival Booths:  We need to organize now what clubs will 
participate by having a fund raising booth (table) during that time 
frame.  We need game booths and food booths.  Please let us know club 
presidents and sponors as soon as you have decided what game or food 
booth your club with be sponsoring and if you need electrical. 
2. Trunk or Treat:  It is also the responsibility of each club to have a 
"trunk" in the trunk or treat.  Your car or truck will be pulled in to 
the designated trunk or treat area and you will give candy to the 
children to come by for trick or treats from your truck or tailgate.  
Your truck must be decorated and manned at all times.  Please remember 
we have averaged over 1,000 visitors each year at this event and our 
trunks often report that they ran out of candy in less than an hour of 
trunk or treats.  Make certain you have enough candy for all the little 
ghouls that will come by.  The Nursing Club has won the decoration 
contest two years in a row so you have some competition out there. 
3.  Mr. Eastern contest:  Mr. Eastern is scheduled for Tuesday November 
3rd and we would like to see as many clubs represented as possible in 
Mr. Eastern sponsored this year by the Psycho club.  Please get the name 
of your designated participant to Marilyn Duncan as soon as you know who 
they are.  She has paperwork that must be filled out for them.  
Participants should be ready to participate in sportswear clothing, 
Talent (only 90 seconds please), and Evening Gown competitions.
4.  Homecoming Qeen and King:  Also be thinking about who will be your 
Homecoming Queen and King candidates and get their names to us so we can 
arrange photographs and they can campaign for votes.  They will also 
need to have a car or truck designated to them for the parade on 
Saturday November 7 at 10 am. 
5.  Parade Float:  What will your float be this year?  Our parade theme 
of Mountaineer Mania should give you a wide range of options on how you 
will exemplify your Mountaineer Spirit through having a float for the 
parade.  Our parade was reported to us by the City of Wilburton Police 
office as the largest parade in Latimer County after only two years 
running!  That's exciting and we have only just begun!  You can begin 
your float building on Sunday afternoon at 3 pm at our Pre-float Float 
party in the Goddard Building.  Bring your flat beds and goose-neck 
trailers over to find a premium spot to decorate and enjoy a Rootbeer or 
Coke Float courtesy of ESGA.

Thank you to Mr. Leland Walker for allowing us to utilize the Goddard 
Building again for float building and to the City of Wilburton for being 
so accommodating regarding our parade.  Check out the Community Carnival

The Horticulture Department will be hosting a plant sale on Thursday, 
October 1 starting at 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm in the Eastern Greenhouse 
located just west (to the left) of the Meats Lab for all Eastern 
faculty, staff, and students. 

The public sale will be Friday, October 2 from 10:00 am til close in 
front of The Pit Stop (across the street from McDonalds).

We will be selling 6-packs of annual pansies and violas and 4-inch pots 
of pansies, violas, and flowering kale.

Six packs will be $2.25 each and 4" pots will sell for $1 each.  (All 
plants purchased at the Thursday sale will be discounted $0.25 per 
six-pack or 4" pot)

Please let any of your friends and family that wishes to purchase some 
quality plants know about us.  Hope to see you at the sale!!

The fog wasn't bad at my house this morning, but in toward town it was 
so thick that the water tower across the road looked like a mirage!  
It's started burning off now, but you can still see a little haze in the

old movies with the vampires, and werewolves...

Happy birthday wishes go out today to instructor Laurence Raunikar, of 
our English Dept.  I hope he has an excellent day!

Don't forget to attend the Gospel Singing in the park tomorrow afternoon 
in the beautiful Goldberg and Joseph's Heritage Park downtown.  I 
inadvertantly gave all the credit to the Latimer County Arts Council for 
sponsoring this yesterday, but it is actually brought to you by our 
wonderful Main Street Program, and the Arts Council is just helping with 
the concession booth.  (I don't think this cold or whatever I'm coming 
down with is helping my brain function at all.)

Hi folks,

Hope you all had a great weekend.  The weather was great, or so I'm 
told, as I spent mine indoors nursing a cold.  Not a fun thing.  And 
yep, still had to get up and act alive today and come to work.  It's 
inventory time.  Seems like it comes around every five minutes, although 
it's only once a month going by the calendar.  Oh well, that's the 
breaks.   What is it they say, "It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta 
do it."

Don't miss seeing The Princess and the Pea this week in Mitchell 
Auditorium.  Several performances will be offered, so try to find the 
time to see it at least once.  Performances will be today at 10:00 and 
12:30, Tues. at 10:00, Wed. and Thurs. at 10:00 and 12:30, and Fri. at 
10:00 and 7:00 p.m.  Not only do we have several wonderfully talented 
college students included in these performances, there are school 
children from several area schools trying out their acting skills in 
this production.  Eastern staff, faculty and students are admitted free, 
and the general public may attend for $1.00 for adults and .75 for 
children.  Come and enjoy the royal play!

Hi folks,

A little bird told me yesterday after I had sent out my menu that I had 
missed mentioning Hank Mooney's birthday.  That's because I didn't know 
it was Hank Mooney's birthday!  I hope he had a great one.  He's one of 
our regulars on campus and in the Cafeteria and we're always glad to 
have him around.

Another performance of The Princess and the Pea will be held at 10:00 
today in Mitchell Auditorium, so if you have some time off in that time 
slot, you can go enjoy a great performance by our theater students and 
quite a good group of area school students who have enlisted to help. 

Also, coming up Thurs. evening at 7:00, we will be hosting a concert by 
Paul Enis' music students, along with the special group The Sound 
Sensations.  I believe this will be the first concert in our new 
Ballroom, and I'm sure they will start us off proudly.

And for you Facebookers, our EOSC Bookstore now has a Facebook page!  
Check it out, become a fan, and get updates on book buyback, new 
merchandise, clearance sales and more!   (And maybe someday, someone can 
show me how to do all that, when I have time, an internet connection, 
and a computer somewhere besides here at work!)

And due to student requests starting tomorrow morning, we will be 
extending our breakfast serving time for another 15 minutes.  We will 
now serve breakfast til 8:45 a.m. for you lucky ones who didn't get 
signed up for 8 o'clock classes and can sleep in until almost time for 
your 9 o'clock.

Hi folks,

Wow, I can't believe it's the 30th already!  I started to put the 29th, 
but I guess you can only be 29 so many times, right?  I did give my 
calendar a very dirty look when it confirmed that today actually is the 
30th.  I know the busier you are, the faster the days go by, and I've 
been really busy lately, so I guess that's what's happened.  And it 
still doesn't seem like I've finished a single thing I've been working on!

It's Biggest Loser weigh-in day once again.  I hope everyone is still 
encouraged and working toward their goal.  Remember to eat healthy, and 
get out and exercise while the wonderful weather holds.  Yard work is 
good exercise, and being outdoors in the fall is very enjoyable.  I saw 
a Monarch butterfly drift past my window yesterday, so I'm figuring 
their fall migration will be happening anytime. 

Go buy some plants at the Horticulture Plant Sale tomorrow and get out 
in the yard and plant them.  It's a win-win situation.  You help them by 
buying the plants, and then you get exercise digging holes to plant them 
in.  Not to mention making your hard look lovely for the fall. 

Our EOSC Fall Concert takes place tomorrow evening at 7:00 for the first 
time in the new Student Center, so be sure and come out and enjoy the 
wonderful music and the new facility.

The Princess and the Pea is being performed at 10:00 and again at 12:30 
today and tomorrow, so try and make it in to enjoy one of these 
performances, or maybe you're like me and will have better luck getting 
to the Friday evening performance.
