April 1 Message-ID: <4BB4BAA4.1040007@eosc.edu> Happy April Fool's Day everyone, Looks like the March wind didn't get the memo that the calendar changed, but I think we're due some April showers tomorrow anyway. I got a 6-pack of Beefsteak tomato plants at the Horticulture Dept. sale yesterday, so maybe I can get them out and started growing some delicious tomatoes this weekend. Wish me luck! I'll have to put them somewhere where our goose can't yank them up or snap them with his vice-grip of a beak! Anyone have any sure-fire tomato growing secrets they'd like to share? I've always loved the idea of gardening, but the reality never quite turned out like I planned. I need all the help I can get. Boy, next week is going to be busy, busy, busy! We'll have hundreds of extra kids on campus Tues. the 6th for scholastic contests. (If any clubs or organizations are going to have any fund raising/recruiting booths out for them to see, you'd better get hopping!) The Staff Council is planning a food booth to raise money for the picnic, etc. We'll have a couple of days to recover from that and then we'll have Aggie scholastic contests on Friday. Don't forget, the Cafeteria will be open for Brunch and Dinner only tomorrow! No early Breakfast will be served, so go ahead and sleep in if you're still on campus. Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Chili dogs French fries Loaded baked potato bar And for dessert, have a helping of our Ice Cream with your favorite topping. Our Grill is open today, too! Have a blessed Easter weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... April 5 Message-ID: <4BB9FFE4.9040709@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, the Easter bunny made his rounds yesterday, and somehow according to the count, after thinking they were about 50 eggs short, the family egg hunt wound up with more eggs than they thought they started with! I don't know how that happened, but maybe we should've hidden money instead! (Come to think of it, I have always heard that bunnies multiply quickly!) For the record, we didn't have any math majors in the group. From here, it looks like the tulips in the pots around the clock tower bloomed out this weekend, a bright sunny yellow. They're the brightest thing I can see out there on this cloudy morning (aside from one guy's shirt). I noticed the redbuds are coming into their color, as the Bradford pears have their petals scattered by the breeze. And the new green spring leaves really show up against the grey sky. I really wasn't ready for more rain and mud, but it does make the flowers bloom. It will be a busy day on campus tomorrow for those of us affected by the Scholastic Contest. Of course, with no classes being held, lots of you will have a really easy day. The Staff Council will be having a Frito Pie booth, probably outside the Student Center, so we're really hoping any rain holds off till another day. Our menu for today includes: Goulash Broccoli and cheese Steamed red potatoes Corn on the cob Hot rolls And for dessert, have a helping of Cheesecake, either plain or with a choice of toppings. I see musicians set up under the clock tower, our Staff Council table where we will be selling Frito Pies and pops is set up on the northeast side of the Student Center, Cheerleaders? are set up on the northwest side selling chili, pop and T-shirts, and it looks like Aggie Club? is set up over by the old Student Union with their grill already fired up and sending out a tantalizing aroma. I just hope no one's stuff blows away in this breeze! I've already had to run to the Business Office for change we've been so busy here in the Cafeteria and Cyber Cafe! As you pre enroll, the following statement will be a part of your enrollment process. By completing this registration, you are agreeing to the following statement: I promise to pay Eastern Oklahoma State College all charges on my student account by the due date. Eastern Oklahoma State College may also apply up to $200.00 of federal financial aid that exceeds current year charges toward the prior years balance on my account with the college. If I should default on my account, I agree to pay all finance charges and costs, including collection agency costs, attorney fees, and litigation costs, incurred by EOSC in efforts to collect. I understand that all unpaid charges may be subject to credit bureau reporting and/or state income tax attachment. If I am unable to attend EOSC for any reason, I understand that I must officially drop within the published drop/add period to avoid financial obligation or a grade liability. I understand that transcript and registration holds are placed on unpaid accounts. The reason for this statement is to make you aware that by enrolling you are creating a financial obligation. If you do not pay your bill, your account will be turned over to a collection agency and you will incur additional charges. It also gives the college the right to apply your financial aid to your student account within the federal guidelines. Secondly, we are changing the process of refunding student reimbursements. We hope to have this process in place by the fall semester and need to be sure that we have your correct mailing address and phone number. Please contact the Registrar's Office if you need to update you student record. Finally, remember that your account must be paid or covered by financial aid prior to enrolling. We have mailed statements today. If you have any questions, please contact the Business Office. Good luck in enrolling and thank you for choosing Eastern Oklahoma State College. I had a couple of nephews competing in Algebra, (they didn't get it from me), and Susie Smith's daughter, Sydney Underwood, got 1st place in World History, I believe. I was going to go check out the results that had been posted on the windows in the Student Center, but by the time I got around to doing it, they were gone. I'm sure there will be information on our Website as to the winners, etc. Our Cyber Cafe proved to be a very popular attraction with the kids, doing a brisk business for several hours solid. I know I got my exercise running back to the Business Office for change numerous times! Now we should have a couple of fairly normal days before the FFA contest hits on Friday and has us running like crazy again. Happy Birthday wishes go to our upstairs neighbor in the Student Services Office, Dana Lewis. April 8 Message-ID: <4BBDEE55.2080608@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It got chillier than I expected last night, and is still a bit cool out, but the sun is out and will warm it up pretty well before too long. It's supposed to get up into the 60s today, so it may not be as warm as yesterday, but it still looks like a gorgeous day outside! I've been noticing a bluebird in the vicinity of our bluebird house in the back yard, so I may have to go check and see if we have a nest or any eggs, or if she's just house hunting. I still haven't seen a thing around our martin house. Maybe I need to put up a "Vacancy" sign. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Amanda White, Administrative Assistant in the Financial Aid office. And for tomorrow, a little bird told me that student Chelsi White will be celebrating a birthday! I hope they both have a great day and eat lots of cake! We were discussing the price of groceries here in the Cafeteria the other day, and that got us to looking out the window, wondering just which part of the lawn we could till up for a vegetable patch. It really started seeming like a good idea when we looked at the price of fresh vegetables! I got a 6 pack of tomato plants at the Horticulture Plant Sale last week and I'm ready to try my hand at not killing them, (so far, so good). Helen Scott says her hubby, Randy, plants in 5 gallon buckets, and I've seen one of mom's neighbors just cut a slit in a bag of potting soil and plant a tomato in that, and recently the Topsy Turvy tomato planters have been hot sellers. Maybe I'll experiment with a few different ways of planting and see what works the best. (If I'm lucky, I'll at least get a big enough tomato to put on a BLT!) Remember, no classes tomorrow, and we'll have scads of Aggie kids all over the place on campus! It's going to be a busy day for the Cafeteria crew! That's good. That way it'll be nice and warm when my husband has to fix our outdoor hydrant that broke off in my hand and shot me in the face yesterday. What is it they say about no good deed going unpunished? I was trying to hook up the hose to clean up a dog carrier and kennel pen a friend had loaned me, (along with 2 dogs to foster), when the whole hydrant, all the way from the pipe in the ground to the faucet, broke off in my hand. I'd been intending to take a shower, but not in the yard fully dressed! Talk about a surprise! I never came so close to drowning on dry land! Once again, there are lots of high school kids on campus for tests, this time all Agriculture related, and our regular classes are let out, giving our students and faculty an extra day of wonderful weekend to enjoy. I understand OSU Extension Agent and 4H leader Tony Johnson will be on campus flipping burgers, (his favorite thing to do besides eating them), for the group. April 12 Message-ID: <4BC335FF.20608@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow, were we busy Friday here in the Cafeteria and Cyber Cafe! We just thought we were busy Tuesday with the Interscholastic contest, but it turned out to be just a warm-up exercise for Friday! Those FFA students really went for the great sandwiches we serve up out of the Cyber Cafe! We'll have to remember to get lots more change next year, because once again, I was keeping the trail hot between here and the Business Office for $1s and quarters. I looked at the results of the tests that were posted on our windows, and if they'd had some of these categories when I was in school way back when, I'd've probably taken FFA! Back then, it seemed like it was all about raising farm animals to show and eat. Personally, if I spent that much time, energy and care on an animal, it might be having dinner with me, but no way would it become dinner for me. I'd be all emotionally attached by then. (That's why I have dogs and cats, instead of cows and pigs. Cows are too big to be good house pets anyway.) I could really get interested in the Horticulture, Landscaping, Floriculture, and that sort of stuff though. I had an email containing 5 tips to help lessen your allergy symptoms, but it would only let me get to the first one, which was wear glasses or sunglasses when outside. (Evidently C. J.'s on to something!) This will prevent so much pollen from getting into your eyes to make them red and irritated. And man is there a LOT of it floating around out there! It's like every tree, shrub, flower and weed is just shooting out fountains of the stuff, filling the air and coating every surface with it. Every vehicle is yellow this time of year. I had to turn on my windshield wipers yesterday to get it all off the windshield so I could see where I was going. Fall is another name for Autumn, and I think Sneezing Season might be another good name for Spring. June Cecil has her Jewelry and Accessories set up for sale in the President's Dining Room today, and I believe part of the proceeds will add to Eastern's efforts to raise money for the Relay for Life fiight against cancer. It's time to get yourself some new Spring Bling, in time for prom, Mother's Day, graduation or whatever reason you want to use. Come check it out! Our menu for today includes: Beef tips and rice Steamed broccoli Baby carrots Corn on the cob Hot rolls And for dessert, try a helping of our luscious Peach Cobbler. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) P. S. April 13 Message-ID: <4BC4880F.50906@eosc.edu> Hi folks, What a gorgeous day and week it's shaping up to be! I finally got around to checking out my bluebird house and sure enough, it is occupied, and Sunday evening it contained 2 beautiful little blue eggs. Being on the vertically challenged side, I couldn't see into the nest without climbing up on something, so I cheated and stuck my cell phone up there and took a picture of the nest and eggs! I was going to send it to my email and attach it to my menu but it tells me "Insufficient memory, delete files". (Must have too much junk stored in my phone, huh?) I was lucky enough to run into Pat Turner, former Sullivan Hall Administrative Assistant, this weekend at Alco. She was there shopping with her husband, Wiley, and former EOSC student Tatsuaki Negishi. He is about to graduate from ECU at Ada now, and will go back to Japan for a while before returning to America to work. This year's theme for the Relay for Life is centered around helping people celebrate more birthdays, and instructor CherylWood-Myers is doing her part to make this happen by celebrating one herself today. She's a wonderful person and I hope she has a wonderful day. The Green Frog Festival is coming up this weekend in Wilburton, as is Trash-Off day, and the Staff Council would like to encourage any employees who can to participate in it by picking up trash bags (supplied by the Okla. Dept. of Transportation) and promotional posters from Sheryl Marmon at the Physical Plant and going out and cleaning up along a local road or highway of your choice this weekend. Do your part for the planet by putting trash where it belongs, not along our roads and highways! And all you Biggest Losers, remember it's weigh-in day! Not too many of them left so get out and exercise while the weather's so nice! Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Au gratin potatoes Peas Fried okra Hot rolls And for dessert have a piece of Chocolate or Coconut Pie. Yum! April 14 Message-ID: <4BC5DE03.6050307@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It's another gorgeous day outside, but there are chances of rain developing toward the end of the week when the Green Frog Festival is scheduled, and while frogs don't mind rain, festival goers are generally not that fond of it. Let's hope it holds off on that, at least during the peak hours of the festival. We got a call earlier from Craig Price, assistant coach of our baseball team for more sack lunches for tomorrow. They're travelling again, and from what I can make out from the numbers I've seen, they seem to be doing well this season. Way to go, guys! Keep it up! It's April 14th already, time's running out, so don't forget to mail in your tax returns if you haven't already. The government takes that sort of thing pretty seriously. And while you're at it, mail in your Census form if you're still procrastinating on that too. If you have questions about it, you can ask Malissa Evans, who will be set up in our Student Center lobby from Mon. - Fri. for another few days. Check her table for her schedule if she's not there when you come over. Our menu for today includes: Pork loin Mashed potatoes and gravy Brussells sprouts Baby carrots Hot rolls And for dessert, have a piece of yummy Poke Cake. April 16 Grill Open Message-ID: <4BC87CC7.40204@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I'm back after taking a day off to attend a cousin's funeral. The sad thing is, he was in really great shape up until a few months ago, then they found a mass in his brain, and in only a few short months we had lost him. And he was one of those wonderful people who always helped others before himself. It would be such a wonderful thing if a cure could be found for cancer before we lose another wonderful person like my cousin, Buddy. Your contribution to and participation in Relay for Life, coming up on May 21, will help make this a reality. On a brighter note, at last I'm beginning to see some color in those 3 round shaped trees on the front lawn surrounding the clock tower! I had begun to think they were dead, but I guess they are just "late bloomers". As I drove by, I noticed that our rustic Eastern Oklahoma State College sign is now history, removed to make way for a new one to match the style of the new building. I believe in one of the upstairs halls in the Student Center there's a whole line up of photos of each different sign that has marked Eastern over the years, so soon, there should be another addition marking this era in the school's history. I noticed last night that quite a few booths are already setting up for the Green Frog Festival this weekend. Given the weather report, I hope they can stay dry and open. So many towns have festivals celebrating something significant or unique to their area, and the Green Frog Festival, named after the old Green Frog Cafe that operated in the heart of downtown Wilburton for decades is Wilburton's attempt to host a Spring festival to bring people to our town. Our Fall Festival in October has become a major attraction, so if the Green Frog Festival becomes anywhere near as big as it is, we'll have two big hits on our hands! With our rich coal mining history, too, I noticed that there's going to be a "mine" set up downtown. I want to go see how they managed that! Happy Birthday wishes go out for this Sunday to our Cafeteria Director, Mildred Whisenhunt. I hope it doesn't rain on her day, so she can go play in the dirt. She loves her yard and flowers, and really enjoys her time planting and growing beautiful things. Our menu for today includes: Fish sticks Scalloped potatoes Pinto beans Turnip greens Cornbread And for dessert, have a luscious piece of Chocolate Cake. Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) P. S. I went down to listen to Falling Crossways play in the Goldberg and Joseph Heritage Park, and stayed to see and hear scenes and songs from Theatre Eastern's upcoming production of Annie. It was pretty ironic that we were standing in the rain listening to Annie singing about the sun coming out tomorrow. I think she was a day or two off on her forecast anyway, as the sun hasn't really come out yet. You can tell Todd "Daddy Warbucks" Minshall is really getting into his role. He shaved his head for the part! Now that's really sacrificing for your art! And he'll probably have to do it again before the actual performances on April 29th and 30th. Don't forget, day classes at Eastern's Wilburton campus will be cancelled tomorrow to concentrate on new student enrollment. It was interesting to see that American Sign Language I has been added to our Fall lineup. That could prove to be a very useful skill to have at times. Our menu for today includes: Chicken parmesan over angel hair pasta Catalina blend vegetables Baked potato bar Hot rolls And for dessert, we're trying something new called Striped Delight. (It's got a graham cracker crust, a cream cheese layer, and chocolate pudding; what's not to like?) And once again, the Grill will be open. Six of the 22 students on the top 10 % of the graduating class are members in Student Support Services! Also, over 80% of the students we reported on last year to the Dept. of Education had GPAs over 2.0, and most of those 80% had GPAs of 2.50 or better. Some of the students using the facilities now on a continual basis are maintaining 3.0, 3.50, and 4.0. After our one beautiful day, we seem to have gotten right back into the cloudy, rainy day pattern. I feel like I'm still trying to dry out from this weekend. There seemed to be a good turnout for New Student Enrollment yesterday. I don't know how many miles Chris Horstman and the other students who were assisting with the new enrollees put in yesterday, guiding them from the Student Center to the Administration Building, but I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't still soaking their feet and comparing blisters. I know their help was much appreciated. The Staff Council could use more volunteers on the Picnic Committee, so if you're interested in helping with this fun event, come to the meeting Friday at 2:00 in the Library Conference Room, or contact a Staff Council member if you can't make the meeting but still want to be involved. I did. I took a day off and got a few things accomplished on the home front. Some things are just hard to get done when you're at work all week. Of course, the most "Earthy" thing I did was pulling some weeds and buying some topsoil on sale at Alco to plant my new little rosemary plant and the tomato plants I haven't managed to dry out or drown in. Some of them look like they may survive in spite of my brown thumbs. I do best with plants that thrive on what gardeners call "benign neglect". Ones you can just leave alone and they look after themselves. I did hear the first whippoorwill I've heard this year last night, and saw my first lightning bug, (unfortunately it flew into my windshield), so I'd better get on with it if I'm going to be brave and plant anything this year, I guess. If you have someone in your area who is doing an exceptional job for Eastern, you might want to nominate them for Employee of the Month. You can find the form on our website, or any Staff Council member can get you a copy. The deadline to nominate someone as Employee of the Month is the last business day of each month. (The President, Vice-Presidents, and Staff Council members are not eligible to receive this award, and faculty has a separate award.) There will be a Picnic Committee meeting today at 2:00 in the Library Conference Room for anyone interested in volunteering to help with the Employee Picnic. April 27 Message-ID: <4BD6F91F.10708@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I had a busy day off yesterday during which I got more stuff done for my mom and my daughter than for myself. I may need to take a day off sometime and not tell anyone else about it if I want to accomplish anything I need to get done. The Cafeteria Crew is preparing for the Lion's Club Banquet this evening here in the Student Center. The Lion's Club meets here for their luncheon meeting every Tuesday we're open and are big supporters of Eastern, with Mr. John Shero, one of our Board of Regents being a member. They're a great group and we're proud they've chosen Eastern to host their regular meetings and special events such as this evening's banquet. We're also proud to host another great group, the Kiwanis Club, for lunch every Wednesday. Anyone interested in finding out more about either of these two organizations should contact a member, or a Cafeteria staffer could put you in contact with one. Biggest Losers, don't forget to weigh in today! It's getting down to the nitty gritty, with only a couple of weeks left after today. Time to put on that extra push to take off those last few pounds. Get out and do some walking and enjoy the local scenery while you improve your health. It'll improve your mental health, too! Don't forget that Thursday or Friday evening you need to come out and see "Annie", performed by Theatre Eastern, under the direction of Melissa Lee. I think this will be the last performance at Eastern for some of the wonderful Theater students we've come to know over the last two (or three) years, so let's all come out and give them a big send off. I've seen scenes from this play by this group and you'll love it! Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Steamed red potatoes Gravy Brussells sprouts Okra Hot rolls And for dessert, have a Rice Krispie Treat or a No Bake Cookie (if I don't eat them all first!) And for you Grill fans, it will be back in operation today to make your favorite sandwich. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... April 28 Message-ID: <4BD84631.1060101@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It's looking like a beautiful day out. Really makes you want to play hooky, doesn't it? But hold that thought. Graduation will be here soon, classes and finals will be over and summer vacation will be starting. Here's hoping that when we get time off to do all those "honey-dos" we've got waiting, it won't be too hot, and force us to just sit in the shade with a glass of lemonade! Unfortunately, most of my "urgent to do" chores happen when school is still going on. My daughter and I have been busy trying to get ready for her upcoming prom until I'm about ready to relegate "prom" to the list of 4 letter words I never want to hear again! And I know we'll get to do it again next year, since she's only a Junior this year! All the pre-prom stress was getting so bad I made her stop by Braum's with me the other night for some "Peppermint Ice Cream Nerve Medicine". Hey, I don't know if it would work for everybody, but it works for me! I've been helping a little bit with the preparations for the Administrative Professionals Luncheon to be held at 11:30 in the Ballroom today. All Eastern's Administrative Professionals and their supervisors should be planning to attend this special yearly get together. It's almost the only time we get to see some of those who don't work on our Wilburton campus, and it's a great time to have a good meal together and some time to visit with others of Eastern's Administrative Professionals. Other upcoming events on campus include the Aggie Banquet tomorrow evening, as well as the Spring musical, "Annie", tomorrow evening and Friday evening in Mitchell Auditorium, (and I believe there's a dress rehearsal today if you can't make the evening shows.) Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Mashed potatoes Brown gravy Broccoli cuts Corn Hot rolls And for dessert, have a delicious, chocolatey No Bake Cookie. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) P. S. Remember our Grill is open! rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... April 29 Message-ID: <4BD99804.2040601@eosc.edu> Hi folks, The Administrative Professionals Appreciation Luncheon was wonderful yesterday, both the wonderful meal and getting to hear all the nice comments from supervisors about their employees. We really have a good team here at Eastern, and I truly believe that their first concern is what's good for the students, as it should be. I really enjoyed the great entertainment by our Sound Sensations. Loved the old Beach Boys tunes. It reminded me of the time I was watching Dave Letterman and saw a group of older fellows on stage preparing to sing. I hadn't heard the introduction so didn't know who they were, and when they began to sing, they sounded just like the Beach Boys! It took me a minute to realize...they were the Beach Boys! After all these years, they might want to rethink the Boys part of their name. I've been calling them The Old Beach Geezers ever since, but man they still sound great! After all those nice comments about our hard-working employees yesterday at the luncheon, surely there's someone out there who wants to nominate one of these worthy workers to be the next Employee of the Month. Nominations need to be turned in to a Staff Council member by the end of the day tomorrow to be eligible. You can find the form on our website or obtain one from a Staff Council member. The winning employee will be presented with an Employee of the Month appreciation certificate, a certificate good for one free meal in the Cafeteria, and a gift from the Bookstore. Don't forget "Annie" will be performed tonight and tomorrow night at 7:30 in Mitchell Auditorium courtesy of Theatre Eastern under the direction of Melissa Lee. You don't want to miss this fun musical starring some of our own Theatre Eastern students, along with quite a good group of area children and others. As always, admission is free for Eastern employees or students. Anyone interested in finding out more about PAWS, or possibly volunteering to help, should attend the meeting tonight at 7:00 at the Public Library. We're always glad to welcome new members. Our menu today includes: Pork ribs Corn on the cob Scalloped potatoes Baked beans Hot rolls And for dessert, have a Cinnamon Roll. Spring semester is rapidly winding down, with next week being graduation, and the week after that finals. (That always seems like a cart before the horse kind of thing, but whatever works, I guess.) I'm always sad to lose each group of students as they graduate, even though I don't know them all, and get some of the names confused, I have gotten to know several of them somewhat and will miss them. It's pretty special to be here and get to meet kids from all over, who have the potential to go on and do really great things with their lives, building on the education and experiences they receive here at Eastern. Speaking of things winding down, there will be a retirement party today at 1:00 in the President's Dining Room for a man who is practically an Eastern institution. Although I didn't have him as a teacher, he was already teaching here when I was in college WAAAY back when. After 32 years, Mr. Maurice Hawthorne is ready to pass the torch to someone else, and start a different phase of his life, his well deserved retirement. I hope it is every bit as interesting and rewarding as his teaching career has been, and I hope he knows he will be missed here in the halls of Eastern. The sun may come out tomorrow, but if you wait till tomorrow to see Theatre Eastern's production of "Annie", you'll have waited too long! Tonight at 7:30 will be the final performance, so make plans to attend this fun-filled show, featuring Eastern students and faculty, as well as local children and adults, dancing and singing their hearts out. Admission is free to all Eastern employees and students, and only $5 for other adults, and $3 for children. Be there! Our menu for today includes: Fish strips French fries Macaroni and cheese Fried squash Green beans Hot rolls And for dessert, have some luscious Strawberry Shortcake! Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
