Aug. 2 Message-ID: <4C56DA74.2080309@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Can you believe it's August already?! I can't until I step outside and feel the heat. Then I'm 100% convinced that it's August, and there's Global Warming, or very definitely at least Local Warming! I heard on the weather report that we're in a heat wave like we haven't in a couple of years, and I personally could've gone a couple more without seeing it myself. Be sure and take precautions for yourself if you have to be out doing anything in this heat, and put out plenty of water for any pets that have to be out in it. I've been trying to go out when it gets "cool" in the evenings and keep my plants watered. Those in containers dry out quicker than those planted in the ground, and can get really droopy very quickly. I'm still babying those few little tomatoes I've been coddling all summer and a couple of them are about ready to turn red (and probably get eaten by a blue jay or something). We're having Resident Aide training on campus this week, so will be seeing some of our old familiar faces back on campus if we're lucky. Then next week, we'll be getting the whole new crop of incoming Freshmen to get acquainted with! That's always exciting! We'll be having a main line meal, as well as taking orders for the Grill today at lunch, so come on over and take your pick today. Then this evening at dinner, it will be Grill only. Our menu for today includes: Salisbury steak Mashed potatotes and brown gravy Normandy blend vegetables Corn Hot rolls And for dessert, have a piece of Turtle Pie or Chocolate Cake. Yum! One good thing about this heat wave, the grass is so crispy that you can mow it by walking across it. It's so dry it just kind of snaps underfoot in a lot of areas! Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Jennifer Labor of our Financial Aid office, and Tereasa Ellison who works here in the Cafeteria. I hope they both have a very enjoyable day, (and getting lots of presents probably wouldn't hurt either!) Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Black eyed peas Fried okra Hot rolls Or try one of your Grill favorites at Lunch. (The Grill will be open for Dinner, too.) And for dessert, come cool off with your own creation using our Ice Cream and Toppings. Keep cool, Rhoda 8-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I shouldn't have been surprised as I had actually gotten out the hose earlier yesterday evening and thoroughly watered all my plants, left 3 of my car windows down a crack, (it would've been all of them, but when I leave the driver's side window down, a spider comes in and sets up webkeeping in my car), and left a wooden cabinet outside that really didn't need to get wet, so what could it do but rain? You're welcome. I enjoyed getting to attend part of the first day of Faculty/Staff Conference yesterday. I finally did remember the name of my very favorite Elvis song after the fact: It's Now or Never. Love the song, but can never remember the title. I'm pretty sure it was an Elvis song, but if it wasn't it sure should have been, although John Schneider, (the original Bo Duke) did a great remake of it. Elvis just had one of those rare voices that made anything he sang sound really good. And I really enjoyed getting to see all the new faces we'll be having on our campus this semester, as well as lots of old favorites. We'll be looking forward to seeing some of our faculty friends back in the Cafeteria for lunch. Happy Birthday wishes go out on Saturday to Tracy Clark of our Computer Services Department. If you don't know him, he's recognizable as the slender guy with a shaved head coming from the 3rd floor of the Library, with a cup of coffee welded into his hand. And on Sunday our Vice President of Business Affairs, LaDonna Howell will be celebrating her big day. I hope both of you have a great time, although you may be on campus where we'll be celebrating Orientation! Be careful when getting the mail for faculty, staff and departments, from the mailboxes in the Administration Building, as due to the new faces on campus, the mail boxes have been shifted around. If you just grab where your mail used to be, you may be getting someone else's bills! Aug. 9 Message-ID: <4C601B0A.4000906@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Orientation seems to be going well, fast and furious as usual, with regular classes scheduled to start tomorrow. I am the Breakfast Cashier now, so I've gotten to see and talk to a few of the new students, and am looking forward to meeting more and seeing our old Freshmen returning as new Sophomores. I'm sure you'll notice when you come over, if you haven't yet, that we've revamped our system here in the Cafeteria. We've closed off the door that used to be the entry, and are now using the former exit door to enter through, and the little door on the other side of the Cashier's corner to exit. This is working well so far for the new students, but it'll probably confuse the heck out of our returning Sophomores, (and everyone else), for a while, who know it used to be done differently. We've changed more than our traffic flow, too. We are now serving our meat offerings at the west end of the line, and offering more variety in our vegetables, which you will serve yourself. This leaves the east end of the line available for Susie to use for Cyber Cafe purposes. As with any system, we keep trying new changes until we find what works best, so we'll see how well this suits us. I love the new, bright blue banners depicting the clock tower or our mascot, Buckskin Bob, that are on several of the light poles around campus. They add a nice splash of Eastern Blue to the scenery. Our menu for today includes: Salisbury steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Hominy Peas and carrots Carrots Long grain and wild rice And for dessert, choose from a variety of options: Cheesecake, Chocolate Cake, or Rice Krispie Treats. Then a "cold" front moves through and knocks us back down to the mid or even lower 90's. BRRRR! I hope everyone doesn't roast on the first week of classes! This extreme heat is really starting to take a toll on lots of trees and smaller plants. I've seen lots of leaves already falling whenever a breeze kicks up, and some smaller plants have begun to look like weeping willows they're so droopy from the heat and lack of moisture. Be sure and water any plants you want to keep. (If you're sick of mowing, stop watering the lawn and you'll soon be able to just walk across it and snap it off. Save your gas and energy for something more fun.) And make doubly sure you put out containers of water for any pets that have to be outside in this heat. It's recommended to put out more than one in case one gets spilled. That way there's a safety net. Some ice in it will help keep it cool longer also. Our menu for today includes: Chicken alfredo Steamed red potatoes California blend vegetables Green beans Peas Fried squash Hot rolls And for dessert, have a Chocolate Pie Square or a Pecan Pie Square. I believe the traditional "Mud Bowl" is the opening week activity for this evening, although with this mostly dry, hot weather we've been having, it's going to take some doing to make mud out of this hard packed dirt and dust. This is one activity that always generates plenty of fun memories, (and memorable photographs). Happy Birthday wishes go out to long time Biology Instructor Bill Albright. I hope he has an A+ birthday. And sorry I didn't get to wish Happy Birthday to Spanish Instructor Buddy Sandefur yesterday. I hope he had a wonderful day, also. Come to think of it, we have the perfect birthday present for him out at our PAWS pens. He's an adorable shaggy guy by the name of Cinco. I bet they can communicate very well together. If you're going to be in town this weekend, be sure and go check out the Bikes and Bands on Main Street Saturday evening. I was heartily sick of the 100+ degree temperatures. I really don't know how animals, and plants that have to live out in that can make it, or people who have to work out in it! I could seriously become nocturnal during that kind of weather, because that's the only time it's fit to be outside, and that's kind of iffy. It seems like everyone's stress level has been high lately, and I'm sure the extreme heat has been a contributing factor in this. Financial aid files continue to be reviewed daily and students with awards can expect their financial aid to be processed after the end of the drop/add period. Financial aid awards will be processed through the semester as available. Not everyone will receive their financial aid at the same time. This is normal. Pell Grants will begin to be processed as soon as possible after the drop/add period ends, pending receipt of funds from the federal government. Eastern scholarships will begin to be processed as soon as possible after the drop/add period with off-campus scholarships (including OHLAP) being processed as funds are made available. Loan disbursements will begin to be processed around October 1, pending receipt of funds from the federal government. OTAG (Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant) funds are expected be processed sometime in October, pending receipt of funds from the state. If you believe your financial aid file is not complete, you can check with the Financial Aid Office to find the status of your application. The telephone number is 918-465-1771. If you have received paperwork in the mail, but have not yet returned it to financial aid, please know that your file will remain incomplete until everything is received and verified. If you have not yet applied for financial aid, it is not too late to apply for Fall 2010. You can complete your FAFSA online at www.fafsa.gov. For most students, you will need your 2009 tax information and your parents' 2009 tax information. If you are an independent student (over 24, married, have children, etc.) you will need your 2009 tax information to complete the application but no information from parents. Student loan applications and entrance counseling can be completed online at www.studentloans.gov. (You must have a complete FAFSA first!) Please see the Financial Aid page of the Eastern website (www.eosc.edu) for more information. Your patience is appreciated while your files are reviewed and work is completed to award and disburse the various types of your financial aid funds. Remember, all student refunds will be applied to your Higher One account. As soon as you receive your card in the mail, you need to activate it, and choose whether you want the refunds loaded on the card or direct deposited into another account. You will be notified by e-mail when you have a refund. Aug. 17 Message-ID: <4C6AA856.8090508@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Thank goodness we've cut back on the heat some! I guess we were paying for all those really cold days we had last winter, (that we also didn't want). I broke down and watered my shrubs at the house again yesterday evening. They were looking so sad and droopy that I couldn't stand it anymore. I don't want to lose any of my plants. There goes your shade if that happens, and that's all that makes being outside in the summertime bearable! Very Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Carolyn Prock of our EOSC Maintenance Dept. and also to Ali Martinez, our Bookstore Manager. I'm not sure about Carolyn, but I know Ali would love anything CHOCOLATE for her birthday, so she'll probably have to come get a piece of chocolate cake at lunch. I hope all our EOSC employees are making plans to attend the upcoming EOSC Family Picnic at Robber's Cave State Park on Saturday, August 28. It's for all EOSC employees, whether they are staff or faculty, and their families to attend and have fun together. It seems that staff and faculty are in two different worlds here and don't have many opportunities to get together and get to know each other. This could be the perfect time to remedy that situation. There will be lots of food, fun, games and bookoos of wonderful doorprizes to be drawn for during the event. Be sure and come out and join the fun. Don't forget to attend the Meet and Greet reception with our 2010-2011 EOSC Men's Basketball team and new coach, Scott Edgar, from 4:30 to 6:30 in the Student Center Ballroom today. Refreshments will be served, so come ready to have a snack and talk basketball! Go Mountaineers! Our menu for today includes: Baked chicken breast Mashed potatoes and gravy Vegetable blend Black eyed peas Fried okra And for dessert, have a piece of Chocolate or Yellow Cake with Chocolate Frosting. Aug. 19 Message-ID: <4C6D48DE.7000506@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope your first FULL week of classes has gone well. We're working on getting a routine down here in the Cafeteria, getting to know some of the new students and what they need from us. I still want to stress to the students that they need to carry their student ID cards with them when they come in to eat. Dorm students are required to scan their card to get their meals. Students who do not live in the dorms, do not have a meal plan and must pay cash for their meals. My daughter started her first day of Senior Year today, and got to drive my station wagon to school, since her dad is using her car. (I'm sure that was a dream come true, but she preferred even having to drive my wagon to riding the bus.) It's hard to believe how quickly it seems that she's gotten to this point in life! I can totally relate to that commercial that shows the dad giving driving instructions to what he sees as about a 4 year old little, messy haired girl sitting behind the wheel of his car, before handing her the keys. The camera cuts to him and when it goes back to the daughter, she's a beautiful teenage girl, sitting there, still waiting for her dad to hand her the keys. And I'm sure there are plenty of parents of our college students sitting at home or at work now, thinking, "I can't believe he/she is gone off to college!" How time flies! Our menu for today includes: Beef tips over rice Steamed cabbage Peas with pearl onions Baby carrots Oriental blend vegetables And for dessert, have a helping of Apple or Peach Cobbler. (Don't forget to top it off with some of our yummy soft serve ice cream!) Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Big surprise there. I'm definitely ready for fall. Looking at some of the trees in higher and drier areas yesterday, you'd think fall was already in full swing. So many leaves were totally dry and brown already. I hope there are enough left when the time comes to give us some of our beautiful fall color this year. I'm wondering if it's the hot, dry weather that's caused a 'possum and a raccoon to come and eat with our cats lately. There's probably not much to munch on out in the woods right now. The cats don't really mind the 'possum that much, but they seem a little skittish around the raccoon. I'm sending in some changes to update the Cafeteria information on our EOSC website. We've made several changes, and hadn't gotten the website updated yet, so this should give a more accurate picture to prospective students, parents and others, of what we offer. I am not that up to date on all this internet usage, but I guess what convinced me that the world really is using the internet more than not, was when I couldn't find a single paper copy of the classes offered on campus. There used to always be stacks of the classes scheduled for each semester available in different areas, but I couldn't find any the last time I looked. Someone had to tell me it was on the website. (I'm sure it is, but I'm still looking for it there, too.) Steve Akins told me the other day I should look at his vacation pictures on Facebook, when I asked how his vacation went, and I had to confess that I don't have a Facebook page. (I'm more likely to have my face in a book.) Students today have grown up surrounded by all this technology, and don't seem a bit afraid of it. (Of course, part of me thinks that may be because they're probably not the ones who'll have to buy a new computer or whatever other gadget if they really mess theirs up.) Someday maybe I'll have the time and money to "get with the program". Our menu for today includes: Hot wings Potato wedges Sauerkraut and wieners Black eyed peas California blend vegetables Macaroni and cheese And for dessert, have some Banana Pudding or some Rocky Road Pudding. If you are a participant, or a student who is interested in joining the program, please look for me in the lobby area of the Wanda Bass Building in McAlester at 4:00 p.m. This schedule will meet the needs of the most of our McAlester participants this semester. If it is not convenient for you, call me to make arrangements to meet. My number is 918-465-1823, or you can e-mail me at slovett at eosc.edu. This opportunity to meet with SSS staff, in order to fulfill your activities for the SSS program this semester, is being provided by the SSS TRiO program and is a special service provided for you. We realize that you want some of our services, such as book lending, tutoring, and grant aid scholarships, and that it is hard for you to travel to Wilburton to take advantage of the services provided, so I have arranged my schedule to meet with you on Thursday afternoons this semester so that you can be an active participant and be eligible for grant aid. We are requiring that you do the 5 workshops we are required to provide for you before you can be eligible for the grant. These workshops are available on a cd and I will bring them with me so you can complete them. All 5 take about 30 minutes to complete, so please arrange to meet with me at 4:00, when I get there, to do them. I will look forward to meeting you for the first time on Thursday, September 9. I will be preparing for a conference in San Diego this week and will be gone till after Labor Day next week, so I will see you the following Thursday. Aug. 30 Message-ID: <4C7BC85D.3060803@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Our air conditioning seems to be on now and starting to cool things back down. May have to go check on our upstairs neighbors and see if they've recovered yet. The thermostat down here showed 84.5 a while ago, and it was even hotter upstairs according to Dana Lewis! Here's hoping that the leak is found and the problem is fixed. The picnic on Saturday was a lot of fun, especially for Judy Bornheim and new employee Shannon Cowan, who each won a TV! We actually had better attendance than we had anticipated. I'm sure all the wonderful donated door prizes were a big enticement there. Many thanks to all who helped pull the event together. We couldn't have done it without such a tremendous group effort. It started out just a Staff Council project, but soon had grown to include several Picnic Committee members, and various others, and we were especially glad to have Eddie Woods volunteer to slave over that hot grill and cook all those hamburgers and hot dogs for everyone to enjoy. Many thanks to those of you who donated cash or prizes for the door prize drawings. It's always nice to have a chance to win something, and there were enough prizes donated that several employees got to win twice! On a related note, please spread the word that I now have custody of a nice Corning Ware dish that someone brought a dessert to the picnic in. I just don't know who to return it to. If you're missing this dish, please email me and identify it, and I'll wash it (eventually) and return it to you. By the way, the stuff in it was very good! I unintentionally forgot to mention the other day that Michelle Harding, the Administrative Assistant to our Librarian, would be celebrating her birthday on Sun. Aug. 29. Better late than never, I guess. I hope she had a good one. Our menu for today includes: Grilled chicken breast Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Green beans Baked potatoes Peas and pearl onions And for dessert, have a piece of Magic Cookie Bar. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <4C7BFDD6.6060602@eosc.edu> Several of you are asking about a time line for financial aid refunds. Pell will be the first to be released. That file is being processed now. Once the file is completed, we will request the funds. Upon receipt of the funds, Higher One will deposit the funds into your individual accounts and notify you by your student email that your funds are available. Please watch you email. Loans will be processing in September with other funds to follow. By using Higher One, your funds will get to you faster. You will not have to wait on a paper check to be processed. You will not have to come to the Business Office to pick up your funds or have your refund check mailed to you. Once your activate your easy refund account and make your selection to use the card or to have your funds directly deposited to a bank of your choice, just watch your email! If you look at your college account on line through Web Advisor and see that financial aid has been applied to your account, then Financial Aid have finished their work and we are requesting the funds from the FED. Once we receive the funds, they will be deposited to your Easy Refund Account and you will receive a email notification. (You can also go online to EASYREFUNDCARD.COM and request other forms of notification such as your cell phone) Please be sure to get your card by Sept. 1st. If you don't get your card, call the Business Office and we can verify the status of your card or order you a new one. After Sept. 1st, it will cost you $20 to have a card replaced. When you get your card, go on line to make your refund preference. Then wait for your email! Aug. 31 Message-ID: <4C7D18CE.1010606@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It feels much better over here today. The air conditioning is back on, but not too much, so it's just right in my office. They may not be able to get me to come out (except to eat, of course.) It was really miserable in here yesterday, but I know the guys who were having to work to get things back running right were even more miserable than we were. We're really glad they stuck with it till they got everything fixed. Our cooks are much happier today! We have lots of guests on our campus today from all over, here to attend the Counselor's Only Fair upstairs. This is an annual event and it gives our campus lots of exposure to people who may never have been here before. I spoke with one attendee this morning who was from up around North Dakota and Minnesota, now working at NSU, and he commented on how pretty our campus and our area was. That's always so nice to hear. So many people who have never actually been to this half of the state think of Oklahoma as a flat, dusty place, but I always tell them that's the other half of the state. We live in the pretty half and are proud of it. Don't forget to get your campus parking permits upstairs in Student Services today if you haven't gotten a new one yet. After that, if you don't have a current permit, you could get a ticket. The new ones are bigger than last year's, and have an image of Buckskin Bob, our Mountaineer mascot on them. Our menu for today includes: Pork loin Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Carrots Winter blend vegetables Red beans Brussels sprouts Hot rolls And for dessert, have a piece of Chocolate Pie or try our new Sunshine Pie. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
