Feb. 1 Message-ID: <4B66F9D9.3050601@eosc.edu> Happy February everyone, Can you believe it's February already? And even though we got enough scary weather to have to close campus a few hours early Friday, we didn't get the major ice storm that a large portion of the state got. Thank goodness! I always hate it when that happens. Besides the immediate danger and inconvenience, we wind up losing lots of our beautiful trees to either the ice itself, or the tree trimmers that come afterward. As it is, almost all of our snow is gone already and temperatures for the week are supposed to be in the 40's, so the rest of it should disappear soon. Get ready! Eastern's Biggest Loser contest kicks off tomorrow giving all participants a chance to lose those extra pounds, get healthier and maybe get into those clothes that have mysteriously shrunk in the closet, not to mention win some money! Happy Losing! Don't forget Team Impact will be in Mitchell Auditorium tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. for a performance that will knock your socks off as part of Campus Ministries Week. Go see these guys! They are AWESOME!!! Our menu for today includes: Enchiladas Mexican rice Refried beans Corn Baked potato bar And for dessert, have some delicious Peach Cobbler. Wasn't it Will Rogers who said if you don't like Oklahoma weather just stick around five minutes? I think maybe in western Oklahoma they substitute a prairie dog for a ground hog, but this early in the year, I figure we're going to have some more winter weather whether we want it or not, (and I'd vote for NOT). Looks like our baseball team will be travelling to Grayson TX? today to represent Eastern. Have a safe trip guys, and bring home a win! I've spent time in a part of New Mexico where it was extremely dry and I would wake up feeling like I was absolutely drying out! We don't usually have that problem around here and you can really tell is when all this fog rolls in. The Cafeteria has a Sweetheart of a Deal for you coming up next week. In honor of Valentine's Day, we'll be having steak, shrimp poppers, choice of french fries or baked potato, and salad bar, with banana splits for dessert. This will be at dinner on Wed. Feb. 10, so plan to be here! Looks like our Baseball team won yesterday against Grayson College. Way to go guys! Good job! Campus Ministries Week continues today with the drawing for the Blu-Ray disc player taking place. The scripture at the bottom of the flyer is very inspirational and a wonderful example of the way we should treat each other. From 1 Thessalonians 5:11, it states, "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up." Try and make an effort to do that each day, in class, at work or at home, and you'll see the difference in those around you, as well as yourself. (It makes me think of Thumper's quote in Bambi, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.") I vote no. Send it back We don't want it. Surely there's somewhere in the world where people are living in conditions that are way too hot and too dry that could use all this wet and cold. We could definitely send them a care package with a big portion of this kind of stuff in it. Anyone with me on that? Be looking around to see if you can spot the Employee of the Year! It could be you! Or you could be the one to recognize Employee of the Year qualities in someone and nominate them for the honor. The hunt is underway right now for the best qualified classified staff employee and the best qualified professional staff employee to receive the J. C. Hunt Employee of the Year award at the upcoming Black and White Gala (Sapphire Ball) in March. If you know an employee who is exemplary at their job, committed to Eastern, and is one of those people who goes above and beyond what they are required to do, they could be the next Employee of the Year earning themselves a certificate and engraved plaque, as well as a free parking spot in close proximity to their place of work. The top three nominees in each category will also receive two free tickets to the Black and White Gale where the winners will be announced. Any member of the Eastern community, including staff, student or faculty, may nominate someone for this award. To find out more about this contest & get a copy of the rules, contact any Staff Council member, but hurry, time is running out for nominations to be turned in. Time is also running out for the Student Support Services food drive Trio Day Project, so if you've intended to donate some non-perishable food item, hurry and bring it in. They'll be loading up soon to turn their donations in. I hope Tia Kelley had a wonderful birthday yesterday, and wasn't forgotten in favor of the Super Bowl. That would be almost as bad as having a birthday on Christmas! I have to correct some misinformation I put out last week about the J. C. Hunt Employee of the Year Award. Evidently I was looking on the wrong copy of something, (and did I mention I still could use new glasses?) There will only be one Employee of the Year Award for an Eastern staff employee, rather than having the employees split into classified and professional categories. At any rate, you still need to be looking around for likely candidates for this prestigious award as nomination time is running short, and a good portion of time will need to be devoted to the selection process once the nominees are decided. Feb. 9 Message-ID: <4B718A12.9050605@eosc.edu> Hi folks, What a morning it's been for me! First I had to pry my car door open with a screw driver due to the freezing rain we got last night having stuck all my doors shut. Then I found that someone had kicked the nozzle off my de-icer, rendering it useless, so I got my scraper and started in on my windshield and frozen windshield wipers, only to have my frozen wipers break pieces off my scraper! That's not supposed to happen! I finally gave up on clearing more than a minimal spot to look through, and started driving to work, without benefit of any soothing music, since my antenna was also frozen stuck. When I got to the bottom of the hill, and made that right hand turn, I realized the latching mechanism in my door was still somewhat frozen (when it flew open), so had to drive in steering with one hand and holding my door shut with the other. So how has your morning been? I figure it can only get better from here, right? Today is EOSC Biggest Loser weigh-in day, so get on over to the Fieldhouse between 10:00 and 12:30 and check your progress. But keep your chin up, there's never not been a spring on the way yet. It just seems to be taking the scenic route in getting here this year. You'd better get over to the Student Center today before 4:00 and check out all the great stuff the Cheerleaders have in their silent auction. They've got all kinds of gift certificates for food, merchandise, lodging, etc., along with some very nice donated items for you to bid on. You'll be surprised at the variety and might just find a bargain on something you've been wanting for a long time. But you'd better check back in after you bid because someone might just outbid you on it! They can be sneaky like that! Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Scalloped potatoes Corn on the cob Green beans Hot rolls And for dessert have some Chocolate or Coconut Pie. Or you can get your favorite Grill sandwich. That's really rare and worth appreciating. I saw Hank Mooney out taking pictures of the snowcovered trees, etc. on campus this morning before the melting started. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Leona Johnson of the Human Resources Office and political science instructor Carter Mattson. I hope they both have a great day. And on Valentine's Day, Chris Ames will be having a double celebration as he celebrates his birthday, too. Enjoy!!! Don't forget about the Sweetheart Soiree in the White House tomorrow evening at 7:00. Come prepared to enjoy delicious refreshments and delightful entertainment. I had to go by my mom's house yesterday to check on a problem with her microwave. She said it was shooting fire out. That sounded scary. I asked her what she had in it when it did this, and she replied, "Not a dang thing." I explained to her that that was probably the problem, you don't have to preheat a microwave, just put something non-metal in there and start cooking. You have to realize though, she's 92 and microwaves, computers, and color TVs, (not to mention ones with remote controls), hadn't even been invented when she was growing up. I have to help her understand some technological gadgets she is forced to deal with, and when I can't do it, we have to call in an expert, like my daughter or my husband. They can usually handle all the problems with the TV. I know how she feels though. I swear some things nowadays come without instructions. They just think you're supposed to know which buttons to push and in what order, and what to plug in where instinctively. Truth is, I usually have to call my daughter or someone to do these kinds of things for me, (someone who's not afraid to push buttons for fear she'll blow something up, since she knows she won't be the one paying for a new one if she blows the old one up.) Our menu for today includes: Pepper steak Rice Green beans Corn on the cob Angel hair pasta with alfredo sauce and grilled chicken And for dessert, have a hunk of yummy Chocolate Cake. These should go over big since students seem to prefer pepperoni to anything else you can put on a pizza. Come on over and try one! Congratulations to Leona Johnson of the Human Resources/Payroll office, who was named Employee of the Month for January. Several of us got together to surprise her this morning with the award. Unaware of the large group gathering out of sight outside her office waiting to call her out for the announcement, she worked busily to complete her appointed tasks. You could see the surprise on her face when Helen Scott, Staff Council President, asked her to step out into the hall for a minute and she saw the crowd gathered to witness the presentation and offer her their congratulations. The bad news for us is, we'll be losing her soon, as Leona will be retiring April 1st after many years of service to Eastern, but we wish her well and sincerely hope she enjoys retirement. She is a real sweetheart and will definitely be missed around here. (I don't think the next batch of clouds and storms is due to arrive till sometime tomorrow, just in time for the weekend.) Out at the PAWS pens we're still trying to dry up the mud we got from the last batch of precipitation, (snow, rain, sleet, whatever) that came through. I made the rounds out there yesterday evening, and noticed one of the dogs that just appeared completely worn out. Too tired to move and I had to step over her numerous times to do my chores. I kept thinking, "How could she be this tired? She doesn't have to get up early, she doesn't have a job, or kids or a husband, no classes or housework or anything to wear her out this bad." But she was completely zonked and I really wanted nothing more than just to plop down and join her. People talk about working like a dog. Man, I wish! That would be the life! I believe Wilburton High School is putting on their musical tonight and tomorrow night, so if you want to get out of the house and be entertained, that would be a good place to go. (I was told it's at 7:30, but you might want to confirm that with the school.) Maybe we'll be seeing some of their stars here on Eastern's stage in a year or two. We had 20 students, 3 staff, and 2 honored guests--Dr. Harrison and Kathy Couch. It was a wonderful trip, the students were all so well behaved, and the ride was wonderful due to the nice bus and to the driving abilities of Robert Tackett. He was really the best!! He was so helpful to us all and very patient! Thank you so much Robert. It was a delight to have Dr. Harrison and Ms. Couch with us. They helped me so much just being supportive and I got many new ideas and insights from them on the trip. At the ceremonies, we heard from 3 students who were Trio participants, and for me, this was the best part of the trip. Just to hear how they overcame adversities to succeed in college with the help of a Trio program was inspiring. That's what this is all about for me and for the women I work with. I think that Dr. Harrison and Ms. Couch would also agree. Helping students who have family problems, financial problems, and disability challenges to become successful college students and productive citizens is our goal and mission. The great news is that Eastern won recognition yet again for it's efforts in the community service project! Over 1200 lbs of food was collected from all the Trio projects in the state, and Eastern's Student Support Services project was responsible for over half of the total!! Give yourselves a hand! Thanks to all who donated and to all the buildings that let us put our boxes out. We hope that next year's trip will be even bigger and better! Feb. 25 Grill Open Message-ID: <4B869B57.6070300@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I've discovered that I still can send out emails from my computer, but nothing's coming in. There's no telling how many emails I'll have coming in when Jeff gets it unclogged. The annual Science Fair is today in the Ballroom. I'm sure there will be lots of interesting and educational exhibits to see, with some of the best and brightest area young people competing to see who this year's winners will be. Cold as it's been lately, with more snow possibly coming in the next day or two, I couldn't believe my eyes yesterday at the PAWS pens when I looked at one of two shade trees planted a few years ago, and saw it budded out all over! (Unfortunately, the dogs got bored and ate the other one. I like maple too, but I prefer the syrup or a nice maple long john to eating the actual tree.) And I also noticed some daffodils blooming in the yard of the little house up between the Maintenance Building and the Meat Lab. We'll be done with this short, cold month in a few days, and I'm voting for warmer, dryer weather! Soon! Our menu for today includes: Baked chicken breast Scalloped potatoes Broccoli and cheese sauce Corn Wild rice (so much more difficult to catch than tame rice!) Hot rolls And for dessert, have some delicious Strawberry Shortcake! Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Students from various high schools are presenting some wonderful exhibits and it would be well worth a few minutes of your time to see all of their hard work on display. The projects are colorful, eye-catching, and very informative. The students are ready and available to explain the individual outcomes of their respective projects. Come, see, and enjoy! All I know is, whatever's coming down out there is just going to end up making more mud! After the snows we've had this winter, I had to laugh when I finally figured out what was wrong with our little shih-tsu, Chance. When she would go outside, she was walking so slowly and carefully that I knew something was bothering her. It finally dawned on me that in spite of being blind, she's gotten used to where everything is and what it feels like, smells like, etc., and knows how to navigate her way around her surroundings, but the snow all over everything had her totally thrown off! All of a sudden everything felt different, smelled different, and took her totally by surprise. She was walking like she was afraid the ground was just going to open up at any moment. Now that she's back to normal, it'll probably snow and freak her out again. The Student Center was a busy place yesterday with the annual Science Fair taking place in the Ballrooms, and we'll be busy once again today as they finish up and have lunch with us. Then Mr. Hawthorne and company can breathe a sigh of relief and start thinking about next year's fair. Thanks a bunch to Keith Lewis for unclogging my computer yesterday. And then the 84 emails that hadn't been able to come through popped up all at once! Our menu for today includes: Pizza BBQ on a bun Baked beans Tator tots Fried okra Cole slaw And for dessert have a Chocolate Chip Cookie. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: http://lists.onenet.net/pipermail/eoscstudents/attachments/20100226/7ca39ae4/attachment.html
