Jan. 4, 2010 Message-ID: <4B420E5B.1070208@eosc.edu> Hi folks and Welcome Back! Hard to believe our Christmas break is already over, but it's good to be back, (now that the shock of having to get up early again has somewhat worn off). I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break, with lots of rest and good food. It's certainly turned off cold to start off the new year, (great hot chocolate weather!), and according to the weather forecast, it will be even COLDER by the end of the week, (REALLY great hot chocolate weather!) so get prepared! Sounds like we're going to have several at least 3 dog nights coming up! I got a new coat for Christmas and some new shoes, along with a hat, scarf and glove set, so I have no excuse for letting myself get out and get too cold, (as long as I take time to bundle into all that). I am seeing little bits of snow in the air out my window right now, so when you go out, you'd better bundle up. Our menu for today includes: Salisbury steak Chicken strips Mashed potatoes and gravy French fries Macaroni and cheese Green beans Baby carrots Hot rolls And for dessert, have a delicious Brownie! Have a great day and keep warm, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Dec. 5 No Grill Message-ID: <4B436078.8000300@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I don't know if it's just a teensy bit warmer today, or if I just think it is because I'm not seeing any snow outside. It may just be wishful thinking on my part. I'm sure by the end of the week, I'll be wishing a lot harder, too! I had one of my little "critter adventures" over Christmas break. On Christmas Eve, a friend of mine gave me a goose, (because she knows I'm a sucker for critters and her other geese were picking on it.) We let it out in my front yard and he waddled around thinking he was in a pen for a while. Then he discovered the "pen" wasn't fenced all the way around, so he headed off to the back of the house. Fortunately, he just circled around and came right back to the front yard, but before he got quite back inside it, he figured out he had just waddled himself right back into the "pen" he had just escaped from, so he turned and went toward the road and I had to hurry and direct him back closer to home. Then he headed off toward our shed and I thought he'd be okay since there was a fence behind it, and I figured he wouldn't wander off into the woods, but would stay closer to the house. Never underestimate a determined goose. I had to go in the house for a minute for something and when I came back out, the goose was gone! I called for him, and could hear him way off in the distance. Who'd've thought a goose could travel that fast without flying! I headed off through the woods, and would stop and call him every so often, and could still hear him off in the distance, but he seemed to be getting farther away. I wasn't sure if this meant he was waddling faster than I was, or if I was going the wrong direction. I finally decided to head back up closer to our pond, cause if I was a goose, that's where I'd want to go, but still no goose. Fortunately, though, he did sound closer when I got up there, so I headed off in the direction of the honking, and starting hearing people. I thought this was a good thing, until I heard someone yell, "Catch him and we'll eat him!" Then I started yelling (and waddling faster myself) until I came to our fence and could see the lost goose who had just been captured by a neighbor boy, with another neighbor standing there eying my goose like he was already stuffed. They gave him back once I told them I had been looking for him, that he had wandered away when I had gone in the house, so I carried him back to the yard and decided I'd better put him in a pen for a while at least. He showed his grateful appreciation of my valiant rescue efforts by pinching the stuffings out of my arm with his beak (Yes, I was a victim of goose abuse.) After almost 2 weeks, I think he's finally decided I'm not so bad, since I'm the one who brings him food and water every day, so the biting had lessened (some). If he only knew how close he had come to being a "Christmas goose" before I rescued him, he'd be nicer to me. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Gear Up's George Larson. Have a great day, George, just don't freeze up! Our menu for today includes: Soft shell tacos Chicken fry steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Fried okra Broccoli Bread sticks And for dessert, have some Chocolate Cake or Peach Cobbler. Jan. 7, 2010 Message-ID: <4B460461.5000705@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I bet you all thought I wasn't here yesterday when I didn't send out a menu, but we were rearranging the furniture in my office, trying to get the best arrangement with the unusual space I've got, and after moving things one way and the other, (with my desk and short file cabinet winding up right back where they started), we just stuck the new file cabinets in an empty space and started filling them up. At last I feel like I'm moving in! I've sort of been living out of boxes since we've been over here, but now I can take care of that problem. According to my computer we've reached a balmy 18 degrees outside, and it looks like the sky has cleared and the flakes of snow I was seeing a while ago have stopped, at least for a while. It misted enough last night to freeze my car door shut this morning, so I had to get something to pry it open with, but driving wasn't as hazardous as I was afraid it would be. Please don't forget to look after your pets, plants and pipes in this dangerously cold weather. I have to take water that I bring from in the house out to my goose every day and as cold as the weather is, he still wants to duck his head under it and wash in it as I pour it. Of course it doesn't take it long to freeze up, making it impossible to drink or play in, so I know he's glad to see me coming with it every time. I guess we've made peace after his Christmas Eve rescue. He's finally realized that I'm where his food and water comes from now, so he'd better be nice to me! Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak Homemade cheese enchiladas Refried beans Spanish rice Corn Baked potatoes Hot rolls And for dessert, have some luscious Banana Pudding. All the activity will probably make it seem like a madhouse around here after this relatively peaceful, quiet week, but it'll be good to have the students and faculty back with us. FYI: The Cafeteria and Cyber Cafe are now set up to accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover credit cards, so if you're on campus with no cash, but you do have your credit card, we've now got you covered for lunch. We've now made it up to a whopping 12 degrees according to my computer. And there's a breeze blowing, so subtract some off of that and you'll get what it feels like it is outside. Don't go outside unless you're really prepared for it. I saw on the news the other day where a guy had just dashed out to get cigarettes, with no shoes, socks or shirt on and got himself locked out in the snow. Five hours later his neighbor spotted him and called an ambulance. They were able to revive him but he had frostbite and is going to lose a toe. Now, to me, that's a really great reason to quit smoking! Think of that if you're having a tough time with a New Year's resolution to kick the habit! If you are brave enough to bundle up and get out this weekend, come by our PAWS adoption day at Alco on Saturday! We'll actually get to set up inside the alcove right in front with lots of little (and big) cuties that need good homes with loving families. I hope no one is still frozen up out there, but wouldn't be too surprised if they were. I noticed the creek down the hill from our house and our pond were frozen over solid, and that very seldom happens. There's usually at least some thawed space in the middle, but not this year! We hadn't had cold weather like this last spell in years, and I hope we don't again for several more years. Where's that Global Warming when you need it? Up there thawing out the Polar Ice Cap? Us Okies are not used to this extreme freeze stuff, and don't want to get used to it! FYI: For those of you who like to use "plastic" for your purchases, the Cafeteria and the Cyber Cafe now accept Visa, Discover and MasterCard credit cards for your convenience, so if that's your preferred method of spending, we're now ready to do business with you on your terms. We also have a new extension in the Cyber Cafe so you can call if you need to. Just dial 878 from any campus phone, or 465-1878 from any outside line. The extension for the cashier's desk in the Cafeteria is 890, or 465-1890 from an off campus line. To help kick off the new semester, a fantastic program will be presented in Mitchell Auditorium tomorrow evening.at 7:00 FREE OF CHARGE for all to enjoy! The program is open to the public as well as EOSC students and employees, and features the Sugar Free Allstars, a madcap musical duo combining jazz and blues rhythms with their witty lyrics and original songs. If you've ever wondered what the Latimer County Arts Council is all about, this program is a sample of the kinds of entertaining and educational programs we try to bring to this area for the local schools and citizens to enjoy. We are grateful to Eastern Oklahoma State College for their help in bringing this program to the area. Jan. 12 Message-ID: <4B4C98A9.9090502@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Things are looking up! We're almost up to freezing already and the sun is shining. We may actually thaw out a little bit today! Sometimes though, I guess the thaw can be worse than the freeze. (Kind of like the cure being worse than the disease, ya know?) Yesterday evening right after I got home from work and my daughter and I were getting ready to take the dogs for a walk, she looked out into the front yard and pointed out a geyser that had just erupted from our outdoor hydrant. Wonderful! We'd had water during the whole deep freeze episode, but now that things were starting to thaw, things went sour. My husband came out, turned the water off, and tried to undo the piece with the fitting that had ruptured only to break something off down lower. Then he had to get a shovel, and do some digging to see just how bad the damage was. He decided we needed to run to a store and get some parts to do the repair with, and of course, I automatically said, "Why don't you go in and clean up and we'll go?" Duh. Cleaning up is a little harder when you've just shut your water off. But it's kind of like when your lights go out and you automatically want to flip the switch on and see what the problem is. We just don't realize how much we take these modern conveniences (or necessities) for granted til they quit working on us. Be sure and make plans to see the SugarFree Allstars in Mitchell Auditorium at 7:00 this evening FREE OF CHARGE, courtesy of the Latimer Arts Council and Eastern Oklahoma State College! It's a guaranteed fun and entertaining event for all ages! Belated birthday wishes go out to Brenda Kennedy who celebrated her big day this past Sunday, Jan. 10, in spite of the freezing weather. And for today, please help me wish a very Happy Birthday to Gear Up's Helen Scott, who is also head of the Staff Council, and a real sweetheart to boot. Don't forget our Cyber Cafe is now open to serve you until 3:30 Mon. thru Friday unless otherwise announced. Let's hope we don't see any more weather like that for a long time! Siberia can keep it! If any employees haven't yet gone up to see Bill Rhinehart with American Fidelity concerning disability insurance coverage, today's your last chance. He'll be here in the Ballroom from 9:00 to 4:00 so make some time to go talk with him. All employees need to do this! Also, if you've got a mammogram appointment scheduled with the mobile unit, it will be here tomorrow from 8:00 to 4:00, and Friday from 8:00 to 12:00 noon, in the parking lot by the Fieldhouse, so don't forget your appointment! It could save your life! And if you are enrolled in the cancer plan, I believe you can send in documentation that you had this test and get a reimbursement. That might be something to verify with Mr. Rhinehart while he's here. For those of you who are not familiar with the program, Trio Day celebrates the student assistance programs and attempts to bring awareness of our programs and our students' needs. Our programs have a responsibility in shaping the leaders of tomorrow and in helping our students reach their fullest potentials. The students who attend National TRiO Day at the capitol are benefited because: 1. They get to hear some of our most prominent state/regional (and sometimes national) leaders speak 2. They get to hear success stories from students just like themselves. 3. They get to experience the sites & sounds of the day, from sitting in the House of Representatives chambers, to seeing several hundred TRiO students from across the state converge for one common event.. 4. They get to help with the TRiO Service Project (working with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma this year.) Our programs benefit because: 1. We get exposure for TRiO programs. We make the newscasts and newspapers, allowing more people to become aware of TRiO programs and the opportunities that are provided. Among other things, this helps to ensure that we are reaching as many students in our target populations as possible. 2. While it is held at our state capitol, our elected representatives at the Federal level are invited to participate. Even when they cannot attend, they are kept up to date with information from TRiO Day. 3. Many of our Federal representatives get their start at the sate level. Therefore, if we can make them aware of us now, we may have another ally in Washington D.C. in the future. 4. TRiO Day is actually a national event. Each state does things a little differently, but we each have similar goals. TRiO Day is fast approaching, so if you are interested in attending with us, please come by the SSS offices and sign up. McAlester and Idabel students can call 918-465-1823 or 918-465-1822 to sign up. We will stop in McAlester to pick students up at the Tandy Town Shopping Center in front of McDonalds. We would like to extend an invitation to Eastern's Administration to attend with us. If you will let me know, I can make arrangements for you to be on the floor of the chambers. When I went out this morning to get in the car and come to work, it was covered in what looked like a really heavy dew, but when I turned my windshield wipers on it, it turned out to be frozen! I'm looking forward to a nice weekend, even though I'm sure mine is going to include some quality time with a couple of rolls of quarters and a good book at the laundromat, since my washing machine went on strike. It's old enough to drive, I don't know why it would quit on me now. I'm hoping my husband can fix it. He recently had to put a new motor in our heating unit, so he does have some skills, (even though he'd rather I didn't find that out). Seems like it's one of those times when as soon as you get one thing fixed, the next thing breaks down. Congratulations to EOSC Horticulture instructor Penny Raspotnik-Jones for being nominated for Ag Woman of the Year. I know she's been really nice and helpful in answering my curious "What is that plant?" questions, and that's just a drop in the bucket of her knowledge of horticulture and agriculture. Best of luck in the competition, Penny. Happy Birthday wishes go out this weekend to Cafeteria worker Rhonda McInnis on Saturday, and Office of Student Affairs worker London White on Sunday. I hope they both enjoy their big day. Our menu for today includes: Fish patties Hot wings French fries Baked beans Corn on the cob Macaroni and cheese California blend vegetables And for dessert, satisfy your sweet tooth with a Peanut Butter Brownie. In order to make this process easier on you the student and us at the business office here are a few tips for you: 1. Please check the address you have on file. You may do this by going your web advisor account. 2. Please have a photo ID, either a driver's license or a student ID when picking up your check. 3. We cannot give your check to anyone but you, so please do not have your parent or grandparent check for you. 4. You may request your check be mailed by signing up for it at one of the campus's or replying to this email. In doing so you are giving Eastern the right to apply your current financial aid to any balance owed to the college, past or present before issuing a refund. I will try to send out an email and let you know when the first disbursements will be. Brrr! Just the thought makes me want to go back home and hibernate! Although if we do get the snow they've hinted that we might, the students could probably get one heck of a snowball fight going by the end of the week! Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Cafeteria worker, Ericka Killingsworth. I hope she has a wonderful birthday with many more to follow. In these tough economic times, even one can from everyone would be such a help! There are so many people who are having a rough time and need just a small bit of help. You will see the collection boxes on the 1st floor of your building. There is a collection box at the McAlester Campus also. Thank you so much in advance for your help. The deadline for making donations is Feb. 16. We will be taking Student Support Services participants and the collected food to the Capitol in Oklahoma City on February 17. Any participant who would like to attend may contact June Haynes at 918-465-1822 or me at 1823. We will be taking the new bus, so it should be a comfortable ride! Jan. 27 Message-ID: <4B6063BA.4000608@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Better batten down the hatches! It sounds like another big ice storm may be headed our way. Just when we thought the worst was probably over... Mildred has been threatening to have the Cafeteria crew stay in a dorm to make sure someone will be here to cook for the students, and in an emergency situation like this, there's always the chance of having PSO and Kiamichi Electric crews to feed as well. I really hope it doesn't get that bad, but it's better to be ready for anything than caught unaware. I remember the last big ice storm a few years back when the electric line crews came out in force, staying on campus and wherever they could, having breakfast and I believe dinner here in the Cafeteria, and taking box after box of sack lunches with them so they'd have something to eat while they were out repairing all the lines that had been damaged by ice, falling tree limbs, and whatever else Mother Nature could throw at them. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Mark Hill of the Physical Plant. Hope he has a great day. I'm sure he'd like it even better if he had the day off! Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Mashed potatoes and gravy Pinto beans Fried okra Cornbread Corn dogs French fries And for dessert have a delicious Pecan Pie Square. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) P. S. Don't forget to bring your pets in before the cold front gets here, and take precautions to protect your pipes from freezing! rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... When you go to the grocery store (or home to Mom's) to stock up, just pick up an extra item (non-perishable) to drop in one of SSS's boxes for our food drive. Just one item per person will make a good show. We don't want Carl Albert or ECU to out do us. Do we??? Your contributions in the past two years have been greatly appreciated by us and I'm sure the beneficiaries. Once again, I want to say thanks and you are all very generous, even in hard times. June Haynes Student Support Services PS There should be a brightly decorated box on the first floor of each building. We will be glad to pick up your items. I had to run pick up a prescription and a few groceries yesterday after work, and as always, the grocery store is crazy busy any time there's a "bad weather ahead" report. Congratulations to Sheila Hunt on being named Employee of the Month for December 2009. Staff Council members surprised her Monday afternoon with the award. Along with a certificate naming her Employee of the Month, she received a certificate good for a free meal in the Cafeteria, and a gift from the Bookstore. Thanks to Jay Parks for making sure she stayed put long enough for us to catch up to her for the presentation. Be watching for info on our upcoming Valentine Dinner special. Don't forget the Cafeteria and the Cyber Cafe now accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover, (or we're always glad to take cash), and we're a very economical choice for when you want to eat out. Our menu for today includes: Turkey and dressing Mashed potatoes and gravy Candied sweet potatoes Green peas Corn Hot rolls Indian tacos And for dessert have some luscious Chocolate Delight. Any snow or ice we may get will probably develop later today or tonight as temperatures drop, so be careful if you intend to get out this weekend. And get yourself, your vehicle, your house, and your pets prepared for cold temperatures tonight and tomorrow. Remember Eastern's Biggest Loser contest kicks off next week, so get rid of all that temptation sitting around in your cupboards, (even if you have to eat it), and get ready to be a big loser! Sheryl Marmon, Physical Plant and Staff Council secretary, is challenging herself to come up with motivational techniques to make the contest more interesting and effective, so be ready for anything! It could be anything from bringing a pot of diet soup for the contestants to sample to making a plate of non-diet brownies to test their willpower! And speaking of food... Student Support Services is holding a food drive to collect non-perishable food items to be donated to those in need. If you are blessed with a good paying job, a two income household, or just have an extra can or two of something you can part with, please donate it to this worthy cause before Feb. 16. Collections boxes are in each building or you can call Student Support Services to pick up your contribution. Next week is Campus Ministries week, and they've scheduled a powerhouse event on Tues. evening, with Team Impact making an impact on campus. This wonderful group of Christian men will be using the power of their bodies and souls to present a strong message for God in Mitchell Auditorium, Tues. Feb. 2 at 6:00 p.m. I've seen them before and they present a truly impressive performance and testimony! Our menu for today includes: Buffalo popcorn chicken BBQ on a bun French fries Corn on the cob Baked beans And for dessert, have some Ice Cream and Toppings. (You know you like it just as well when it's cold out!) Have a safe weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
