Hi folks,

I hope you all had a happy and safe 4th of July weekend and holiday.  
Went to the fireworks display at the Choctaw Indian Hospital at Talihina 
Friday evening and was afraid it was going to be rained out, but the 
rain let up and they went ahead with the show.  Then Sunday night my 
husband's family had their cookout and fireworks and we went to that.  I 
am always amazed by my brother and sister in law's dog  who LOVES 
fireworks.  Most dogs run from the loud pops and hide under the bed or 
somewhere, but this one would chase those things to the moon if she 
could fly.  She leaps into smoke bombs, chases rockets, and tries to 
chase and grab up any thrown thing.  It's just all a big wonderful game 
to her.  Evidently she's never actually caught one, but she acts like 
the whole display is done just so she can chase the sparkles and pops. 

It looks like we've got a chance of rain for the next several days, so 
if you leave your windows cracked so your vehicle won't get too hot, be 
ready to run and roll them up!  You never can tell what'll happen with 
our Oklahoma weather!

Our menu for today includes:
            Baked ham
            Baby red mashed potatoes
            Gravy
            Fried squash
            Green beans
            Hot rolls
And for dessert, have a Brownie.

For dinner we'll be serving:
          Fajitas
          Nachos

Hi folks,

Looks like we've got a 30-50% chance of rain today, and with all the 
cloud cover we've got, I wouldn't be surprised if it came through.  At 
least it'll keep the temperature down to the mid 80s or so, (which will 
probably feel like the mid 90s), but it won't actually be as bad as it 
seems like our July temperatures usually are. 

This is the last week for Upward Bound this summer, so after that it'll 
be pretty quiet around here for about a week, and then Singing School 
Camp will hit bringing people of all ages from all over the United 
States for their annual summer pilgrimage to our part of the world.  
Then before we know it, it'll be time for Orientation and classes 
starting back.  Better make good use of your last few Summer Hours 
Fridays while you can! 

Our menu for today includes:
             Pork chops
             Navy beans
             Seasoned potato wedges
             Cabbage
             Hot rolls

And for dessert, we have Apricot Cobbler.

For dinner this evening we'll be serving:
          Pizza

available.  This is a $1000 per semester scholarship. To qualify a

Hi folks,

Well, our cloudy streak continues, with chances for more rain for the 
next several days.  I was just leaving the PAWS pens yesterday evening 
when it started pouring rain so hard I had to turn my windshield wipers 
on high.  I'm glad I was at least in the car!  I'd've been drowned if 
I'd still been out there cleaning, although I probably could've used 
having some of the mud and wet grass washed off me!

For those of you who didn't see my previous notice, the north Student 
Union doors will be locked tomorrow morning after breakfast so that we 
may begin stripping and waxing our floors.  If you need to enter the 
building, please go around to the south/front door between the Bookstore 
and the Post Office.

Next week the main Cafeteria serving line will be closed but the Cyber 
Cafe will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Mon. thru Thurs.  Come on 
over and try our new Southwest Quesadilla for breakfast, and for lunch 
try the new Mountaineer Burger, a taste tempting homemade, hand-pressed, 
charbroiled old fashioned hamburger, sure to please any real burger 
fan.   We'll also be offering a tasty new panini sandwich in your choice 
of ham, chicken or turkey, so break out of your rut and wake up those 
taste buds!  You might just find a new favorite sandwich over here!  See 
the attached menus for options and pricing.

Happy Birthday wishes go out tomorrow to math instructor Terry Haynes.  
I hope he's enjoying his summer and really enjoys his birthday!

Well, Upward Bound is over for this summer.  All those kids have gone 
back home to enjoy the rest of their summer, and we're waiting on 
Singing School to start this weekend.  That's usually the last big 
hurrah for summer break, but I see this year we have a Basketball Camp 
scheduled the week after that with new EOSC Head Basketball Coach Scott 
Edgar.   And the week after that we start in with Resident Aide training 
and then Orientation and the Fall semester starts and here we go again!    

The Cyber Cafe will be in full swing this week, with a different special 
to watch for each day.

I think maybe our full fledged hot summer weather has arrived (again).  
There are still some clouds around, but I think they're just there to 
tease us.  It rained a few drops at the house yesterday evening, and 
thundered enough to make you think a rainstorm was coming, but that's 
it.  It was all bark.  And according to the Weather Channel, there's a 
steady string of 90's coming at us over the next several days, and at 
most a 20% chance of rain, so get out those shorts and tank tops, you'll 
be needing them!

It looks like there are several birthdays among our EOSC family today.  
Custodial Supervisor, Betty Eason, celebrates her big day today, along 
with instructors Debbie Layton, and  Kristen Turner.  I hope they all 
have a great day.

The week of July 26 - 29, Student Support Services (SSS) will conduct a 
summer workshop for new students to get them ready for college.

The following week, August 2 - 6, SSS will present workshops from 9-11 
am.  THESE WORKSHOPS ARE REQUIRED!  If you want to get books or be 
eligible to apply for Grant Aid you must attend on one of those days.  
For Wilburton, the days are August 2nd, 4th, and 6th, and in McAlester, 
the days are August 3rd and 5th.  The time is the same for all.  If you 
have something that cannot be rescheduled, then you will need to call 
June Haynes at 918-465-1822 or Kathy Howe at 918-465-1860. Sorry folks, 
but this is necessary because of the new law. 

Also, we are expecting to hear this week about our refunding.  If we are 
refunded, it will be for 5 years, and we won't have to reapply for 4 
years.  I will keep you advised.

Hi folks,

Looks like it's going to be another hot one today.  Really hot, with the 
Weather Channel predicting temperatures getting up to around 96, and 
feeling more like it's around 111 or so, so if you didn't get your 
outside chores done early, don't try doing them until it cools off some 
this evening, unless you really need a nice long, expensive rest in a 
hospital.  Make sure and have water out for your plants and pets before 
the heat builds up, and don't leave pets, kids, (or lip gloss) in a hot 
closed up vehicle even for a minute.  I saw a story on the news last 
night about a dog who was left in his owner's car in the heat, and 
either he's a genius, or he just had the dumb luck to land on the horn 
button by accident and alert the owner to his situation.  (I'm almost 
inclined to go for the genius theory.  I know dogs can do some amazing 
things when they put their mind to it.  Plus I can't hit the horn button 
most of the time anyway.  I find myself hitting the air bag symbol on 
the steering wheel.  Of course I don't know if that says more about the 
dogs intelligence or mine...)

Today's Cyber Cafe special, while not strictly a brand new item, is one 
you may not have gotten around to trying yet.  We've had Steak Melts on 
the menu for a while, and I've tried them and really like them, and 
that's saying a lot coming from someone who eats more veggies than meat 
generally.  Today's special features a Steak Melt, Chips & Fountain 
Drink for $3.00.  If you've wanted to try one and just haven't gotten 
around to it, today's deal ought to make up your mind that today's the 
day.  It features thinly sliced steak, grilled bell peppers and onions, 
and swiss cheese with jalapeno ranch dressing. 

For Thursday, our featured special is a Quesadilla, Chips & Fountain 
Drink for $3.00.  The Quesadilla is a large tortilla spread with 
jalapeno dressing, your choice of grilled chicken, ham or turkey, pepper 
jack cheese and salsa, folded over, cut into wedges and served with your 
choice of sauce for dipping.  This ought to satisfy you folks who like 
food with a little Mexican flair.

Hi folks,

Hope you all had a great weekend.  It was definitely a hot one, so I 
hope you were all able to keep cool.  I'm not a real air conditioner 
addict, so I am able to be out in the mornings and evenings and still 
find it pretty pleasant.  (I usually get so cold when I'm in air 
conditioning for very long that I'm looking forward to hot flashes!)  My 
yard was abuzz this weekend first with June bugs, then with honey bees 
and bumble bees, along with hummingbirds and butterflies sipping from my 
mimosa tree and crape myrtle bushes.  I'm always thrilled to see 
honeybees coming to my flowers, (as long as they don't sting me, and 
they haven't so far), since those wonderful pollinators have been 
decimated by disease in the last several years.  I think we really take 
for granted the wonderful, and very necessary service, they provide just 
going about their daily bee business, pollinating many varieties of 
plants, doing their part to keep our world green and bountiful.  

Our Singing School campers are back for their week long camp once again 
this year, so be sure and make them welcome should you encounter any of 
them.  They come in all ages, and from all across our country, so let's 
show them our wonderful down home Oklahoma hospitality while they're here. 

Be sure and come over and check out our new Cyber Cafe menu items.  
We're sure to have something to tempt your taste buds, whether it be a 
Mountaineer Burger, a panini, a quesadilla, or one of our other items.

Hi folks,

I'm really glad I don't have to live off my gardening efforts, because 
so far my entire crop consists of 2 cherry tomatoes and a scrawny little 
cucumber that looks like it's already been pickled.  The plants are 
doing great, but as far as the fruiting goes, that's another story.  I 
heard something on a gardening show a while back that possibly gave me a 
clue as to why my tomatoes are so scarce.  The expert on this show said 
that tomatoes won't put on fruit if the temperature is too hot.  Maybe 
next year I'll just have to take my chances with the frost, because I 
waited to set my tomatoes out till I was pretty sure there would be no 
more chance of frost to nip them, only to find out that the heat doesn't 
do them any favors either!   Live and learn. 

I hate to disappoint you Cyber Cafe Grill fans, but in order to better 
take care of our Singing School Campers, we will not be operating the 
Grill this week.  Next week however, you will be able to come over and 
get a taste of some of the wonderful new items being offered, so just be 
patient.

In the meantime, we have a great menu available to you today featuring:
            Pork chops
            Mashed potatoes and gravy
            Black eyed peas
            Fried okra
            Hot rolls
            Chili dogs
             French fries

And for dessert, come try some of Summer's Lemon Eclair Dessert.  Summer 
Ratliff is our new pastry chef and she's been producing some really 
impressive goodies.

Hi folks,

It looks like a whole string of temperatures in the mid 90s coming at us 
during the next several days, and upper 70s at night, so get prepared 
for the heat.  I was surprised last week when we started to leave after 
a quick trip into the grocery store that my car wouldn't start.  Dead.  
Turn the key and nothing.  Charlie Lyons had had the same experience 
last year, and told me that when he got his battery replaced, the 
employee at the automotive store told him they had replaced 10 batteries 
that day!  Evidently the heat is as bad on car batteries as the cold is, 
if not worse!   Either way, being stuck out in extreme temperatures with 
a vehicle that won't go is a lousy way to spend your time.  After 
repeated tries at jumping the thing, where it would start and go about 
half a block or less and die, we finally had to replace the battery, and 
then were able to get on the road again.   What a relief!  I was glad 
this all happened in the heart of civilization and not out in the middle 
of nowhere!  Makes me think it would probably be a good idea to carry a 
gallon jug of water in the car just in case.

Our menu for today includes:
       Spaghetti with meat sauce
       Broccoli and cheese
       Steamed red potatoes
       Corn
       Garlic bread
       Grilled chicken on a bun
       French fries

And for dessert, have a Raspberry Jello Square.

Hi folks,

Just wanted to let you all know that we'll be cooking off the grill this 
week in the Cafeteria, so now's your chance to come try one of our great 
new menu items, if you haven't already.  And if you had one already and 
really liked it, come have it again!  I'm definitely getting another 
panini! 

After talking bad about my little garden last week, I noticed my tomato 
crop has doubled!  I now have two more little tomatoes that have managed 
to hang on long enough to be recognizable.  They're just about pea size, 
but then oak trees were once just acorns, too.  I have high hopes. 

My daughter and I had gone to McAlester yesterday afternoon, but we 
could tell when we got back down this way that we'd missed a pretty good 
rain!  There were puddles everywhere alongside the road, and everything 
that could hold water had several inches in it, and everything else was 
just wet.   It was so nice out, though,  that I decided to walk out to 
our pond and look around.  Just my luck, even though I had sprayed pest 
repellent on me before I went, I ran into a bunch of seed ticks.  I 
think some of them looked on that repellent as a seasoning, while others 
preferred to move on to the unseasoned areas.  

Campus happenings this week include Basketball Camp with new Coach Scott 
Edgar, and a Student Support Services workshop to help new students 
prepare for college.  And I've already been seeing several new students 
and parents on campus looking around and getting all their paperwork 
done for the coming semester.

Don't forget, even though we're not serving a main line meal today, our

everywhere like toadstools after a rain, it's finally election day for 
several crucial state and local elections.  Be sure and go exercise your

Looks like we're going to have a lady governor in Oklahoma soon with 
both parties choosing a female candidate.  Jari Askins, who has spoken 
here at Eastern in the not too distant past, was selected as the 
Democratic candidate, and Mary Fallin was the Republican primary 
winner.   And Dorothy Coffey at the OSU Extension Office tells me 
there's a runoff in our District 1 County Commissioner's race between 
incumbent Dennis Deela and challenger James Robert Skimbo. 

Come on over and try out our Grill when the hungries hit you today!

Hi folks,

Come on over to the Cyber Cafe and sample something off our Grill while 
it's still a slow week.  We'll be serving lunch from 11:00 to 1:00 and 
we've got lots of great stuff you'll love!

Well, today's the last work day of the last week of our summer "break".  
Next week, Resident Aide training begins in preparation for the new 
semester which will begin the following week.  Of course, there'll be a 
weekend of Orientation first, but what it boils down to is it's about to 
kick off big time around here, so get ready!  That means tomorrow is 
your last Free Friday, so get out and make the most of it!  Next week 
it's back to a full work week schedule. 

My hours will be changing to 7:00 to 4:00 next week, as I'll be the 
cashier at breakfast, so I'll get to see the few early birds we have on 
campus.  Not many students are just knocking down our doors in the early 
morning hours.  If they show up at all for breakfast, they're usually 
dashing in at the last minute before time for class, grabbing something 
quick to scarf down and are out of here before we know it.  It'll be 
nice to get to meet some of the new Freshmen, though.  For the most 
part, my job does not include direct involvement with the students, but 
when I get to cashier, I do get to meet some of them, and that's always 
nice. 

We'll be having a PAWS (Partners for Animal Welfare Society) meeting 
this evening at the Latimer Public Library at 7:00 if anyone would like 
to join or just learn more about the group.  We welcome all guests and 
new members.
