June 1 Message-ID: <4C0522AA.5050603@eosc.edu> Hi folks, The Cafeteria crew is back and fully operational today. We're having a regular line menu plus the grill, so if you've been missing the regular meals or just gotten your fill of grill for a while, you're in luck. A few recent birthdays to note are Drexel Browne, our pastry cook, who just retired after celebrating her birthday last Monday May 24, Dean of Students, Sally Davis, who celebrated her birthday last Tues. May 25, and Physical Education instructor Loma Messex, who celebrated her birthday Sun. May 30. I hope they all enjoyed their special day. Camp season is kicking off here on campus, so get ready to be seeing lots of new, young faces around. Let's all do our part to make them feel welcome, and help see that they have a good experience while here with us. It won't be too long before they'll be college shopping, and we want them to think of Eastern first. Our menu for today includes: Chicken strips Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli and cheese Corn Biscuits And for dessert, have a helping of delicious Blackberry Cobbler! June 2 Message-ID: <4C066D22.4070702@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Even though summer is officially close to 3 weeks away, going by the thermometer, I think we've skipped right to it, with temperatures in the 90s predicted for the next several days, (except for Saturday which shows 100! Man I didn't want to see that!) We've got Gear Up, Upward Bound and Ag Camp going on this week, so we're keeping pretty busy feeding everyone, plus several employees who eat with us regularly, and a few summer students. The newest incarnation of the Eastern sign is underway out front, being fashioned from brick in the style of the new Student Center Building. I'm glad to see this getting underway. It seemed strange to drive by and not see a sign identifying Eastern's campus. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Scalloped potatoes California blend vegetables Black eyed peas Pizza Hot rolls And for dessert, shake up your taste buds with a piece of Earthquake Cake. June 3 Message-ID: <4C07C567.3090703@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, our short week is almost over, and according to the weather forecast and the clouds outside, we may get some rain today. Maybe that will keep the temperatures from soaring up around 3 digits worth. And it should water my little tabletop garden, also. I have my small excuse for a garden on our picnic table since the goose couldn't wait on tomatoes, and just began eating the plants. After he demolished the first one, I decided to remove temptation from his reach, and set all my containers of plants up on the table. So far, so good. I couldn't do anything about him eating the new little peaches I had just found off our little peach tree, but I hope this will save the tomatoes, and the new little cucumber plants I set out, along with my new rosemary and lavender plants. Today is my mother's 93rd birthday, so we'll probably go eat with her this evening and bake her a birthday cake. For some reason her meal of choice is chicken chow mein, (no, she's not Chinese), but at that age, you pretty much get what you want. It's odd how out of my mother and her set of siblings, the oldest and the youngest are still alive, and no, mom's not the oldest. She's the baby! Aunt Alma is the oldest at 108! Our menu for today includes: Chicken tetrazini BBQ on a bun Winter blend vegetables Corn Baked potato bar Garlic bread And for dessert, have a piece of Poke Cake. June 7 Message-ID: <4C0D0023.8030101@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I am very pleasantly surprised that we have cloud cover today rather than the blazing heat we've been having. What a relief! I'm worse than a squirrel. I not only want to hibernate in the winter when it's cold, I want to hibernate in the summer when it's hot, too! Nights are really pleasant, though, except for the mosquitos, (and the doggone dark!) This was really yard sale weekend, with yard sales in every direction! Plus there seemed to be a big turnout at the Chuck Wagon Races. That's the first I've heard of an event of that type. Who knew there would be so many chuck wagons around, and people wanting to race them? This could possibly become an annual event, bringing in lots of new people to our area. I took my daughter to church camp yesterday which is always interesting because it's way out in the boonies and I get turned around easily. As long as I have plenty of gas and room to turn around though I'm good. At least the next time I'll recognize what road NOT to go down! To get to this camp, first you have to find Honobia, (home of the legendary Bigfoot), then it gets really interesting. We somehow managed to find all the right little trails to turn down and got her there. That was the easy part. The hard part was coming back out the right way on my own. I only took a wrong turn a couple of times, but eventually made it back to civilization without actually running into Bigfoot. Wish me luck when I have to go get here again on Thursday! We have both Gear Up and Upward Bound camps going on this week, so we've got a lot of new faces on campus. Please do what you can to see that they have an enjoyable time with us, and they'll remember it when looking for a college to attend. Our menu for today includes: Chicken Parmesan with angel hair pasta Catalina vegetables Baked potato bar Corn dogs Hot rolls And for dessert, have a piece of Chocolate Cake. And don't forget about our great Grill sandwiches! Have a great week, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The unexpected clouds and rain did make for a much cooler day yesterday, and that's the kind I enjoy. It filled up my rain barrels at the house and watered my plants for me, which was nice. I just hope it gets all that rain out of its system any day but Saturday when we're supposed to have our family reunion! We seem to be on a roll for having the wettest family reunions in history! I believe we could end a drought by scheduling our family reunion then. You tuna salad fans will be glad to know that we now have tuna salad sandwiches available in the Cyber Cafe for $1.50, so what used to be an occasional item on our salad bar will now be a regular item at the Cyber Cafe window. That's a great healthy option for your lunch. If you'd like to call in an order to the Cyber Cafe just call Ext. 878, or 465-1878 from an off campus line. Then your order can be ready and waiting when you get here. June 9 Message-ID: <4C0FAE27.70802@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Looks like we might luck out again and stay out of the 90s thanks to the cloud cover. Of course, it may send me and quite a few others scurrying to roll our windows all the way up before too long again, too, but that's okay. I still prefer that to the extreme heat. And evidently I'm not the only one. There seems to be a lot more activity in my yard at night than in the daytime. Our "gardener" makes regular visits at night, sending the dogs into a frenzy of barking to let me know he's out there. (No, we're not rich with a staff, we just have an armadillo that comes around every night "aerating and debugging" our lawn for us.) And I swear I think I heard a deer snort in the yard last night, which the dogs also let me know about. (I hope the gardener hasn't taken on an assistant to help prune my tomato plants! It was bad enough when the goose did it.) Gear Up Camp #2 will be ending today, and #3 will kick right off tomorrow and end on Saturday. I'm sure our Gear Up crew will breathe a BIG sigh of relief at that point, after having 6 straight days of camp, plus 3 days last week. I'm sure it's a lot of work, but it looks like a lot of fun to me, and I'm sure the kids enjoy themselves. June 15 Message-ID: <4C179532.4070606@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Anyone remember in the Peanuts cartoon, how Snoopy would start his novel with "It was a dark and stormy night..." He could've been describing last night for sure. (And yesterday evening was pretty wild, too! My daughter had been in town and saw the dark clouds coming up and said it reminded her of "the Nothing" from the Never-ending Story.) I know it got pretty wild last night because even though I can sleep through it somewhat, I got woke up by our little storm-phobic schnauzer jumping up on the side of the bed and getting on my pillow to shiver like crazy. She starts getting nervous when the first cloud comes up. And even if it just rains, she knows that's when thunder and lightning usually happen, and tries to go find a good hiding spot. We really got off light compared to a large portion of the state, where there was severe flooding. I saw on the news yesterday evening (before we lost signal) where a young woman was almost swept away in the floodwaters near Oklahoma City, and thought, "Lord, if I ever do have that 15 minutes of fame everyone is supposed to get, don't let it be like that!" She seemed pretty calm, considering the danger she was in. I'd've been a full-blown basket case! And when rescuers finally did get to her, their boat capsized and they ALL had to be rescued by another group of rescuers! Man, it's hard to believe it's the middle of June already! I've already seen fireworks stands being moved into place in preparation for 4th of July sales in a week or so. Gear Up camp is finished for the summer, SHINE camp is underway, and Upward Bound will be here for a few more weeks. After that there will be a short lull before the Singing School campers come the last week of July. I drove in to work behind a pickup pulling a pontoon boat complete with fishing rods and floatie toys, and I thought somebody's gonna have fun today. If it had looked like there was a shade over the boat I might've been tempted to stow away and join them, but the thought of being out in a boat under the broiling sun all day just didn't do a thing for me. I've had my share of sunburns and they're NO FUN! You have a lot of fun one day and pay for it for the next week or so. We had a pretty busy afternoon yesterday in the Cyber Cafe with some of the Sunbelt Classic kids and families showing up to eat. There were bright orange Tennessee shirts everywhere. It looked like an orange invasion. Fortunately, they came in peace, and were happy to be fed and have a cool place to sit down and talk and enjoy our Eastern Oklahoma hospitality. My husband finally put the air conditioner in the window at the house yesterday evening. I can't believe he was able to hold out this long, he's usually such a big air conditioning wimp. He says he was trying to keep the electric bill down, but I think he just didn't want to lift the big thing by himself. Now if I can just convince him not to leave it on full blast 24/7 we may be okay. It seems like an all or nothing kind of deal. It's either not in at all, or going full blast 24/7. It was way too hot for doing much outdoors, but was probably a great day for holding down the recliner and exercising your remote control muscles. That seems to be a couple of favorite activities for most dads. Today is actually the first official day of Summer, even though it's felt like it for several weeks now. Be sure and keep your outdoor plants watered, and have out plenty of fresh water for any outside pets as well. The extreme summer heat, accompanied by ticks, fleas, mosquitos and chiggers, along with the fireworks that I'm sure will begin popping shortly, can be extremely stressful for pets, especially if they have to stay outdoors in it. Try to bring them inside or provide them with a good shady area to stay in during the heat of the day. A big hunk of ice in their water bowl will keep it cool as it melts gradually during the day. June 22 Message-ID: <4C20CA5A.9090408@eosc.edu> Hi folks, According to Rudy's email yesterday, there will be workers with some possibly large equipment behind and to the west of the Library building hunting for a water leak that is affecting our air conditioning, so be safe and stay clear and give them plenty of room to work. We need to get our temperatures regulated. (I know I could do with less AC, and the people upstairs are crying for more.) That's one thing our cooks have really enjoyed about this new building...they have good air conditioning in the kitchen area now. You know they say if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen, but it's so much better if you don't have to take so much heat in the kitchen. I'm getting a little aggravated about my "garden". I had several blooms on my tomato plants and it seems like something is nipping them off before they can turn into tasty tomatoes. I'll go out to look and check their progress and they are just gone, leaving just a little stem there where the bloom used to be. I would blame the goose, but he can't reach them so he's off the hook on this little caper. I don't know if it's birds or bugs doing it, but my future tomato harvest is not looking too good at this point. At least my cucumber plants are growing and my rosemary plant always smells so good it makes me feel better just to go take a whiff of it. My lavender plant is even blooming. Surprisingly, it is not blooming lavender, but rather has white blooms. I wasn't expecting that. Maybe it's the variety. June 23 Message-ID: <4C22199F.4090805@eosc.edu> Hi folks, What a strange day we had here in the Cafeteria yesterday! We started out with the AC going full blast, then having to be shut off so a leak could be found. That's when everything got warm, and the condensation began. It was unbelievable how much water appeared on everything! It looked like we'd had a flood. We couldn't keep the floors dry, so had to put out "Wet Floor" signs everywhere and send out a warning to tread carefully when coming to our building. My office actually got pretty warm, but I could still open file cabinet drawers and get a face full of cold air if I needed it, and I kept having to scoot a towel around on my floor to dry it off, over and over. Fortunately, it didn't take them long to find the leak and get everything back to normal. It took somewhat longer than that to get everything dried off, but that's okay. We seem to be back to normal today with the AC working and everything dry again. If you're heading south of town anytime soon, please be careful of the construction zones. There is loose gravel on the highway making driving more challenging than usual, so you'll need to slow down and watch out for that and the construction crews. Speeding through a construction zone can get you a warning, a ticket, or if you're really unlucky a trip to the body shop or hospital, so be aware that this is going on and take it easy going through there. Reminder: To place a grill order in the Cyber Cafe, call Ext. 878, or 465-1878 from an off-campus line. Our menu for today includes: Pizza BBQ on a bun Baked beans Tater tots Fried okra Cole slaw And for dessert, have a Brownie or Cookie. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... June 24 Message-ID: <4C236D0E.404@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I believe we have a mild cool front coming in today, with temperatures only supposed to be in the mid to lower 90s, instead of up around the 3 digit range. (You know you live in the South when you can say something like that in all seriousness.) The days may be miserable, but with a little mosquito spray, the nights are not bad at all. Great for sitting outside listening to the whippoorwills and crickets, watching the light show the fireflies put on, counting the stars, and smelling the mimosa and honeysuckle. Now that's living! Our Eastern family is celebrating several birthdays today and over the next couple of days. Mr. Leland Walker, of our Agriculture Department, should be celebrating his big day today, while Joyce Bills, of Human Resources, waits her turn to celebrate tomorrow, and her sister, Karen Clark, in the Registrar's office, has to wait til Saturday. I hope they all have a great time! We have a great menu for you today, featuring: Roast beef Mashed potatoes and gravy California blend vegetables Corn Baked potato bar And for dessert, try some Pineapple-Zucchini Cake or some Hawaiian Dessert. Keep cool, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... June 28 Message-ID: <4C28BBA4.3070005@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Boy, summer is just flying by! Maybe that's why it's been so hot so early. It's in a hurry. The storm last night brought some welcome rain, except for our schnauzer, Lady. She never welcomes rain because she knows it usually comes with thunder and lightning, and sure enough it did last night, big time! If you were able to sleep through all that, you must've been in a coma! I was really glad this morning to find that someone, (probably my husband), had put my car windows up all the way. I usually leave them down a little bit so it doesn't get so hot inside, but I wasn't about to go out in all that last night just to put the windows up. We've got Cheer Camp going on on campus today, Tuesday and Wednesday, so you'll probably be seeing several very peppy people running around during those days. Maybe they'll share some of that energy with the rest of us. There will be a slight price increase of .50 per meal to the public eating in the Cafeteria, starting this Thursday, July 1. This will still be a bargain, providing a full meal, complete with salad bar, drink and refill, and dessert for $6.00. Our menu for today includes: Indian tacos Pinto beans Cabbage with ham Fried okra Potato wedges And for dessert, have some delicious Apple Cobbler. June 29 Message-ID: <4C2A09B4.4030407@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It's looking like we're going to be having some slightly cooler weather for the next several days. I looked on the Weather Channel site and I didn't see a single 100 for the foreseeable future! The highest temperature it showed for the next 10 days was 95 and that was late next week. I can deal with that kind of weather! We had a strange Cat-tastrophe this weekend. One of our kittens has appeared to be dying 3 times now. (I figure he's down to his sixth life.) The first time it happened, we REALLY thought he was a goner. I found him lying in the yard, unresponsive, limp and semi-conscious. I thought he'd had a heat stroke, as it had been a very hot day. I took him inside to cool him off, without noticing much change in his condition the entire night. Finally, the next morning, he sat up groggily and we got him to eat a little soft food and drink a little water. Didn't have a clue what had gone wrong with the little stinker, but he seemed fine afterwards. A second time, he just seemed to be really deeply asleep, or unconscious. We tried waking him up every way we could think of with no response. Once again, when he woke up, he was ready to eat. This third time, I decided that if he was going to keep doing this, (and really wasn't dying), we needed to find out what was wrong with him. I ran him out to Dr. Tim Forwoodson Friday morning, (again in his little kitty coma), and found out he has hypoglycemia! I never before heard of a cat with low blood sugar! Evidently we're going to have to baby him a lot and make sure he gets to eat several times a day. He's liable to wind up as fat as my daughter's chihuahua, Sadie Mae, before it's over with. Happy Birthday wishes go out to Eastern's newly published author, Mr. Roland Newby, the McAlester campus's evening librarian. Congratulations on the publication of your book and your birthday, too! Our menu for today includes: Lasagna Steamed red potatoes Broccoli Corn on the cob Hot rolls And for dessert, have a piece of delicious Cheesecake! June 30 Message-ID: <4C2B5BF3.1020402@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, June is just about water under the bridge, and we've got a long holiday weekend coming up. I always look forward to the beautiful fireworks displays, (the sight more than the sound). We usually wind up going to the one at the park, and the one at the Choctaw Hospital at Talihina, as well as getting together with my husband's family and shooting some fireworks there. If you have pets that are afraid of loud noises, like thunder, guns or fireworks, please keep them in a secure area that's as comforting as you can make it. Give them a cozy bed to snuggle in, their favorite toy, and try playing a radio or TV for them to help drown out the scary noises. They'll appreciate whatever you can do to ease their fears and let them know they're safe. Our campus Chief of Police, Mike Nowlin, will be celebrating his birthday this Saturday. I bet he took vacation at this time just so I couldn't pick on him about how old he's getting. And everyone will celebrate with Grants Manager, Debbie McIntyre, when she has her big day on the 4th of July. She's a real firecracker! Our menu for lunch today includes: Meatloaf Homemade scalloped potatoes Black eyed peas Winter blend vegetables And for dessert, make yourself a Banana Split. For dinner this evening, we'll be serving: Grilled chicken on a bun Baked potato bar Frito chili pies And we'll have Cookies for dessert.
